McCarthy returns to his home state to rally beleaguered California Republicans

McCarthy’s speech comes as California Republicans could be poised to play an important role in the March 2024 primary, which is early enough in the year that the state’s large delegate pool could influence a potential race between former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The speaker avoided presidential politics in his speech at a downtown hotel, though he did take cracks at Rep. Adam Schiff, who is running to replace retiring Sen. Dianne Feinstein, and Gov. Gavin Newsom for his support of a high-speed rail system planned to eventually cut through the state’s Central Valley.

“The only thing I think Gavin spends more time on than high speed rail is spending time on his hair,” McCarthy said.

The speaker, who is from the Central Valley city of Bakersfield, is in familiar territory in Sacramento, where he served in the Assembly as the Republican leader before he was elected to Congress. His influence is welcome to a party that has fallen on hard times in California.

“He may be the highest-ranking Republican in the nation,” said California Republican Party Chair Jessica Millan Patterson, who was picked for the job by McCarthy in 2019. “But as a California Republican, he will always be one of us.”

While the speaker and Patterson avoided talk of the presidential race, it was clearly on the minds of many at the weekend convention.

Trump was by far the dominant name at the convention, with vendors hawking bedazzled “Let’s Go Brandon” hats, MAGA flags and rhinestone-encrusted purses shaped like stilettos and guns emblazoned with “Trump.” But many spoke fondly of DeSantis.

“I know what I get with Trump,” said Susan Walsh, a delegate from Nevada County who was attending the convention with her dog, a Portuguese podengo named Trump. “I want DeSantis to stay [in Florida], just in case I need to flee.”

Marty Miller, a resident of nearby Lincoln, Calif., was the only vendor offering DeSantis merchandise on Friday, including a blue “DeSantisland” t-shirt written in Disney font.

A native of Florida, Miller said California Republicans are open to DeSantis, but many are waiting to see what Trump does.

“They like Trump,” he said. “But he’s got to keep his mouth shut.”

Iraq: 3 Islamic State militants killed in Salahudin province

    [ad_1]

Baghdad: Three Islamic State (IS) militants were killed in airstrikes while a security member was killed in a separate incident in the Salahudin province north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the Iraqi military said.

A force from the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service was sent at dawn on Wednesday to search IS hideouts that had been bombarded by Iraqi F-16 jet fighters the day before in the Balkanah Mountain in the northeast of the province, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement issued by the Security Media Cell, a media outlet affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command.

The troops found three bodies of the extremist IS militants at the bombed hideouts, along with weapons and other equipment, it said.

In a separate incident, a security member was killed and another wounded on Wednesday when IS militants attacked a security outpost near the town of Tuz Khormatu in the eastern part of Salahudin province.

Over the past months, Iraqi security forces have conducted operations against extremist militants to crack down on their intensified activities.

The security situation in Iraq has been improving since the defeat of the IS in 2017. However, IS remnants have since sneaked into urban centers, deserts and rugged areas, carrying out frequent guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians.

  • Ned Price to step down as State Department spokesperson

Ned Price to step down as State Department spokesperson

    [ad_1]

Washington: Ned Price would step down as the spokesperson of the State Department, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said as he credited him with resuming the department’s daily press briefings that had been sporadic during the Trump administration.

“Throughout the more than 200 briefings he has since held, he’s treated journalists – as well as colleagues and everyone else he interacts with – with respect,” Blinken said in a statement on Tuesday announcing Price’s departure as the spokesperson of the department.

Indian-American Vedant Patel, who is currently the Deputy Spokesperson, would be the interim spokesperson. Price’s replacement has not been announced yet.

“For people in America and around the world, Ned Price has often been a face and voice of US foreign policy. He’s performed with extraordinary professionalism and integrity. On behalf of the Department, I thank Ned for his remarkable service,” Blinken said.

Price previously served in the CIA and was spokesperson of the National Security Council during the Obama Administration. He resigned at the start of the Trump Administration.

Blinken said Price has helped the US government defend and promote press freedom around the globe and modelled the transparency and openness it advocates for in other countries. “His contributions will benefit the Department long after his service.” In a statement, Shaun Tandon, president of the State Department Correspondents’ Association, said the press corps at the State Department salute Price for restoring one of the pillars of American diplomacy — the Daily Press Briefing.

“From the moment he was appointed, Ned reached out to make clear that regular, substantive and thorough briefings were a priority and he has stayed true to his word. Even when he knew he would face intense scrutiny at the podium such as during the Afghanistan withdrawal,” Tandon said.

“Thanks to Ned, the Daily Press Briefing now seems routine and that is how it should be — it offers an opportunity for press from around the world to question the foreign policy of the United States, often critically, and requires the State Department to defend it. It is a tribute to the health of American democracy,” he said.

“Ned has also worked hard to ensure the rightful role of the press in covering the travels of the secretary of state. His more than two years on the job have thankfully been drama-free on travel, with Ned understanding and embracing the need for media to be present and to ask questions when Secretary Blinken represents the United States overseas,” Tandon said.

  • DeSantis delivers annual state of state — with an eye to 2024

DeSantis delivers annual state of state — with an eye to 2024

    [ad_1]

florida state of the state 02725

While DeSantis has brushed off questions about his political ambitions, he’s checked many of the boxes that White House hopefuls seek to accomplish as they gear up for a national campaign.

As Florida’s legislative session begins this week, DeSantis will head to Iowa and is planning trips to Nevada and New Hampshire. Those visits come after DeSantis held a series of campaign-style events to hype his new book, “Courage to be Free.”

He’s has also come under increased attacks from Donald Trump as the former president focuses on the Florida governor as the biggest obstacle to getting the 2024 Republican nomination. DeSantis has noticeably lost weight, another common feature of politicians planning high profile future runs. Trump’s insults, at times, have centered on DeSantis’ physical appearance.

DeSantis couldn’t ask for a better runway for a national Republican primary than Florida. The Republican-dominated Legislature over the past two years has handed him almost anything he wanted as he has ascended through the national conservative ecosystem and appears poised to continue the trend.

Both Florida Republican House Speaker Paul Renner and Senate President Kathleen Passidomo opened their speeches Tuesday by praising DeSantis, which has become common among the state’s Republican leaders.

“Our governor is truly America’s governor,” Passidomo said. “He has defended our conservative values, challenged the individuals and institutions who pose threats to others, and introduced innovative solutions to better our state. It is often said that states are laboratories for democracy. Under the leadership of Governor DeSantis, Florida is more than a laboratory, we are the model.”

DeSantis used his speech to highlight his policy portfolio, which is largely defined by culture war-infused fights. That includes urging lawmakers to expand Florida’s “Parental Rights in Education bill,” known by opponents as “Don’t Say Gay,” which bans instruction of sexual orientation and gender identity in classrooms up until third grade. Legislators want to broaden the ban until eighth grade.

About a half-dozen bills lawmakers are proposing are inspired by DeSantis’ hard-right agenda, including mandating that teachers use pronouns that match those assigned to their students at birth, ban gender studies in the state’s higher education system and prohibit gender-affirming care for trans minors under 18.

“It’s sad that we have to say this, but our children are not guinea pigs for science experimentation and we cannot allow people to make money off mutilating them,” DeSantis said.

Attending the State of the State speech was Chloe Cole, an 18-year-old who has referred to herself as a “former trans kid,” and who has spoken to state legislature’s across the country in support of banning gender-affirming care.

Both state and national Democrats quickly released a slate of press releases and “fact checks” blasting DeSantis, a rapid response effort that’s ramping up as Democrats prepare to do battle with DeSantis heading into the 2024 presidential election cycle.

“Ron DeSantis is set to deliver his State of the State address today — where he will unveil his extreme wish list for the upcoming Florida legislative session as he continue his desperate chase for the MAGA base,” the Democratic National Committee said in a statement.

Unexpectedly, GOP lawmakers on Tuesday also proposed a six week abortion ban just minutes before DeSantis delivered his State of the State address even as the state’s previous 15 week abortion ban is mired in legal challenges and is awaiting a Florida Supreme Court hearing. The proposed six-week ban, which has the support of legislative leaders, includes language tying its effective date to a ruling by the conservative-leaning state high court. If the court upholds the law, the six-week ban could take effect if passed, but it would not if the 15-week ban is found to be unconstitutional.

The new proposal includes exemptions up to 15 weeks for rape and incest if the victim provides documentation that they were victimized. That can include things like police reports, court records, or restraining orders.

DeSantis told reporters after his State of the State speech that he thought the exemptions were “acceptable” but kept his comments brief.

“I have not seen what is filed, but I think that in the discussion that I had heard them [lawmakers] having, they were recognizing [the challenge to the 15 week abortion ban] was pending and that whatever they do this year would be basically only in effect if that case was resolved in a favorable way,” DeSantis said.

    Pilloried by Dems

Democrats immediately railed against the proposal and cast DeSantis as extreme for supporting the measure. Democrats nationally used the same technique in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, and it was credited, in part, with helping Democrats enjoy a much more successful 2022 midterm than predicted.

“Each of us should be free to live our lives with dignity and to make the decisions that are best for our lives, families and communities,” said state Rep. Anna Eskamani, an Orlando Democrat who previously worked for Planned Parenthood. “No one wants Ron DeSantis in the exam room with us; personal medical decisions should be between me, my family, my doctor, and my faith. Not politicians.”

White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre on Tuesday also told reporters that elected officials like DeSantis “espouse quote, freedom for all, unquote, while directly attacking the freedom to make one’s own health care decisions. Their rhetoric doesn’t come without consequences here.”

But in the wake of midterm elections that saw Republicans dominate in Florida and build legislative super-majorities, Democrats have largely acknowledged there is little they can do to slow down DeSantis’ agenda.

And DeSantis does not appear poised to ease up.

“We will stand strong. We will hold the line. We won’t back down,” he said to conclude his speech, before borrowing a line made famous by former President Ronald Raegan. “And I can promise you this, you ain’t seen nothing yet.”

“I started as a public servant as an analyst at the CIA, and I ended up in this job because of a series of accidents, fateful accidents,” Price told NBC News. “I have loved being in this line of work for the past several years. And one of the things I love most about it is the connection to the policy.”

Price previously worked as a CIA analyst and served as a spokesperson on for the National Security Council during the Obama administration.

In his statement, Blinken particularly thanked Price for bringing back the department’s daily press briefings, which were irregular during the Trump administration, praising Price for “giving journalists the chance to regularly ask tough questions of our policy.”

“Ned has helped the U.S. government defend and promote press freedom around the globe and modeled the transparency and openness we advocate for in other countries,” Blinken added. “His contributions will benefit the Department long after his service.”

Vedant Patel, Price’s current deputy, will serve as his temporary replacement, the State Department official said.

  • Telangana: Ahead of Ram Navami, Hanuman Jayanti, state police on high alert

Telangana: Ahead of Ram Navami, Hanuman Jayanti, state police on high alert

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana police are gearing up for the Sree Ramanavami and Hanuman Jayanthi festivals scheduled in March and the following months.

With the surcharged political atmosphere, Ramzan, and elections for Legislative Assembly, as well as Parliament, expected in 2023 the police are not leaving any stone unturned in their planning. Sree Ramanavami is on March 27 while Hanuman Jayanthi is on April 6.

According to BJP sources, the party will utilize it as an opportunity to spread its message of Hindutva and consolidate its vote bank. The party leadership reportedly asked its cadre to utilize every opportunity to strengthen the party at the grass root level.

In this scenario, it is evident there will be more rallies and major processions observed on a grand scale in all the districts of Telangana. The police asked the local intelligence offices to keep a close watch on the programs planned for the two festivals.

Senior police officials are keeping in mind the elections ahead and the politically surcharged atmosphere in the state before planning the bandobast operations. The local police as a confidence-building measure will take up flag marches along with Rapid Action Force in the coming days in all the districts, a senior police official said.

In Hyderabad, Goshamahal MLA, T Raja Singh will try to outdo his past processions’ grandeur and consolidate his position to see the BJP party revokes his suspension. The MLA known for his hate rhetoric might spend a huge sum to make the Sree Ramanavami procession a great success and the most talked about affair.

Grand processions on these two festivals commenced from 2010 onwards more so to consolidate the vote bank of the saffron party. Huge money is spent on making arrangements and inviting guest speakers from all over India.

During the procession, communal riots occurred in sensitive pockets of the Telangana State.
