Matka sales spike as Hyderabad starts to bake early this Summer

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Sales of earthen pots, popularly known as ‘Matkas’ have witnessed a spike with the city sensing the start of an early summer.

These earthen pots are used traditionally all over the Indian subcontinent, as a home ‘water storage cooler’ since ancient times and can be found in houses of every class.

Speaking to Siasat daily, a seller from Shamsheer Gunj, Balraj says that the rate of the pots has increased owing to inflation.

With an increase in heat waves each passing day, the demand for them instantly has increased and the demand will keep increasing till the Summer reaches its peak.

“The roadside stallers have geared up to meet the demand with multiple options, shapes and sizes of earthen pots,” he said.

Apart from the traditional Matka, the stall owners offer a range of other earthen pottery items like water bottles and cookware used exclusively in the making and storage of curd.

Modern pots are installed with a tap at their bottom in view of sanitation and ease of usage.

  • Congress starts ‘flower on ear’ campaign against ruling BJP in Karnataka

Congress starts ‘flower on ear’ campaign against ruling BJP in Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Intensifying its election campaign in poll-bound Karnataka, the Congress on Saturday launched a ‘poster war’ against the BJP by pasting ‘Kivi Mele Hoova’ (flower on the ear) on BJP posters in Bengaluru and Dakshina Kannada districts.

The campaign was pursued aggressively a day after Congress MLAs tucked flowers on their ears inside the Assembly to show their protest against the unfulfilled promises made by the ruling BJP.

Flower on ears is a symbolic statement in Kannada, which means making someone a fool.

The Congress stepped up the ‘Kivi Mele Hoova’ campaign by taking it to the streets now, the party said in a statement.

“Posters of ‘Kivi Mele Hoova’ are seen on the top of the BJP ‘Achievement Wall’ paintings and posters in many parts of the Bengaluru city and Mangalore this morning,” it added.

The Congress’ Karnataka unit on Friday had attacked the BJP government for failing to fulfil 90 per cent of its 2018 manifesto promises and also for utilising only 56 per cent of allocated funds of the 2022-2023 budget, the statement said.

Former chief minister and Congress Legislative Party leader Siddaramaiah, Congress state president D K Shivakumar and other Congress MLAs sported flowers on their ears to highlight that BJP was making people ‘phool’ out of people, it added.

The ‘Kivi Mele Hoova’ is a pamphlet showing flowers tucked on the ear pasted on BJP posters.

The Congress poster appeared on BJP posters showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP national president J P Nadda, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, his predecessor B S Yediyurappa and BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel.

These posters were seen on Jayamahal Road in Bengaluru and Kankanadi in Dakshina Kannada district, a Congress activist said.

Reacting to it, Union Minister for Coal and Mines Pralhad Joshi said the Congress has realised that people will put flower on their ears.

“Congress leaders went to Assembly putting flowers on their ears. They have the realisation that people are going to put flowers on their ears. Already people have done the same to the Congress across the nation,” Joshi said.

Karnataka Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar said the Congress MLAs entering the Assembly with flowers on their ears shows that they had been in the habit of ‘putting flowers on the ears of the people’.

The BJP in response, started a Twitter campaign “Thatt Antha Heli” (Reply Quickly) to portray the Congress as a corrupt party.

The Congress had in the past conducted the ‘PayCM’ campaign alleging that the BJP government charges 40 per cent commission on all public works.

A wordplay on digital payments firm PayTM, the PayCM campaign had a QR code showing Bommai’s face in the middle.

  • Hyderabad starts to feel summer heat as temperature rises

Hyderabad starts to feel summer heat as temperature rises

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: After experiencing a chilly winter season, Hyderabad has started to feel summer heat as the temperature crosses 35 degrees Celsius in the city. This year, the summer season is likely to be harsher due to the expected El Nino event.

The last three years were La Nina years whereas, the upcoming year is likely to be El Nino which not only makes summer harsher but also results in monsoon failure.

Hyderabad sees four degrees’ Celsius departure from normal temperature

As per the data released by India Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad on Monday, Hyderabad witnessed a maximum temperature of 35.6 degrees Celsius which is a four-degree departure from the normal temperature.

The maximum temperature i.e., 34 degrees Celsius recorded at Hayath Nagar station was also three degrees Celsius more than the normal temperature.

Similarly, at Patancheru and Rajendra Nagar stations too, the maximum temperatures i.e., 35 and 34.5 degrees Celsius were higher than the normal temperature.

Hyderabad may see harsh summer after chilly winter

During the past few weeks, Hyderabad saw a chilly winter season with colder mornings and warmer days. The minimum temperature in some areas has even dropped to 6.5 degrees Celsius.

However, in the next few months, Hyderabad is likely to witness a harsher summer season due to the expected El Nino event.

El Nino event can not only increase the temperature in Hyderabad during the summer but also affected rainfall and crop output.

What are El Nino and La Nina?

El Nino and La Nina are two climate patterns. While El Nino is known for the abnormal warming of surface water in the eastern tropical pacific ocean whereas, La Nina results in the unusual cooling of the tropical eastern pacific.

In the El Nino effect, the sea surface temperature becomes much higher than normal. This temperature can be 4 to 5 degree Celsius higher than normal. El Nino is a part of the climate system. It has a profound effect on the weather. Due to its arrival, there is an effect on the weather all over the world.

In the La Nina effect, the sea surface temperature drops significantly. It has a direct effect on the temperature around the world and the temperature becomes colder than average. During this period in India, it is very cold and the rains are also moderate.

The duration of the La Nina event is between one to three years whereas, El Nino continues for less than a year.

  • Conservatives gloat as Congress starts off with little to show

Conservatives gloat as Congress starts off with little to show

    [ad_1]

    us iran 81268

It’s a preview of the long slog that Washington expects during divided government. But the limping pace is also a textbook example of the strategy some Republicans hope to execute for the next two years, running out the clock on Biden’s presidency and betting on beating him in 2024.

Summing up the view of many conservatives, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said: “Every day Senate Democrats are not destroying America is a good day.”’

House conservatives extracted myriad concessions from Speaker Kevin McCarthy, winning historic sway over key levers of Congress — including the panel that sets the chamber’s floor votes. Even in the Senate, the GOP’s right flank is celebrating the sleepy six weeks since being sworn in on Jan. 3 and mounting its first-ever challenge to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Congress will assuredly have to clear legislation this year to raise the debt ceiling and fund the government. Yet there are few signs of anything else making its way to Biden’s desk. The Senate spent its first three weeks in recess, and then a long GOP internal fight over committee assignments delayed Senate organization for another two weeks.

“I actually appreciate this go-slow approach,” said Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), who said the country needs a “breather” after the past two years. “It’s time to slow down.”

Over in the House, McCarthy’s bruising fight for the speakership gave way to a “honeymoon” period, as Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) cheekily put it. While the party then moved quickly to pass a series of bills — including two on abortion and one that aimed to rescind new IRS funding — those proposals will serve little purpose beyond political messaging, since they won’t survive the Democrat-controlled Senate or the president’s veto.

It’s not all sunshine for Republican leaders, who had to pull other pieces of legislation favored by conservatives. That included two police bills, one that aimed to “hold prosecutors accountable” and another that expressed support for law enforcement.

Yet their swift passage of legislation that has little chance of becoming law is allowing the narrow House majority to divide Democrats on issues like autonomy from Congress for the D.C. government, as well as to ding Senate Democrats — who one month ago watched McCarthy fight for his political life and are just now ramping up their pace.

“We’re crashing through. We’ve passed a lot of our priorities. We split the Democrats on many of these votes,” said Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.), head of the House GOP campaign arm. “What matters is: Are we going to be able to get our spending bills done? And I’m hopeful that we’ll see some activity over there on their side.”

The tables could always quickly turn, particularly when the debt-ceiling negotiations ramp up this summer, given the possibility that centrist Republicans could team with Democrats to ice out the right.

For now, though, both Senate and House conservatives are emboldened. That looks different depending on the chamber you look at: 10 Republican senators opposed McConnell’s election as GOP leader, and challenger Rick Scott (R-Fla.) is among those still battling with the Kentuckian, accusing him of using panel assignments as retribution (“Of course, he tossed me off the committee, because I ran against him,” Scott said of the Commerce Committee).

In the House, McCarthy won over much of his opposition after a bruising speaker fight, leading to praise from unusual corners like Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), who said that “Kevin has kept his promises” to the right.

The House’s comparatively rapid pace, for now, is no surprise given the procedural constraints in the Senate. But at some point, roughly 18 months from now, upper-chamber Democrats will run out of floor time before the election and perhaps regret that they didn’t jump in more quickly.

That’s in part due to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s decision to start the year on a three-week recess. Following that break, the chamber’s Democrats contend that Republicans intentionally slowed committee organization during an internal fight over where senators like Rick Scott and a new crop of GOP freshmen would end up.

Schumer says at least having a 51-49 majority will allow them to evade some GOP roadblocks.

“Republicans want to slow-walk because they can’t stand that the Democrats are in the majority,” said Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), the Senate Banking Committee chair. “It’s always a slow start. But this has been worse.”

McCarthy seemed to enjoy watching Democrats across the building, remarking last month: “Is the Senate even in this week? What did they do this week? Oh, yeah, they haven’t been in.”

The last Senate started at a similarly glacial pace, with McConnell delaying an organizing resolution and the chamber forced to immediately take up an impeachment trial for former President Donald Trump after Democrats took slim control of the chamber. But Schumer pivoted quickly to a Covid aid package, kicking off a historical period of legislating between an evenly divided Senate and a small House Democratic majority.

In a split government, any legislative goals will have to be more circumspect. Schumer is looking to bring a modest tax treaty with Chile to the Senate floor soon, along with repeal of the authorization for use of military force that cleared the way for the George W. Bush-era invasion of Iraq.

And while House Republicans joked that gridlock is good when there is a Democratic president in office, some were also optimistic about bipartisan goals, even with the 2024 presidential election looming.

“You can get big things done when you can share the blame,” said Hudson, pointing to the debt ceiling.

In the immediate term, Democrats are shifting their focus to what can be done unilaterally.

Senate Democrats just confirmed their first judge of this Congress, and Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), who chairs the chamber’s Judiciary Committee, said the party is “ready to roll” on dozens more.

“We want to get moving,” said Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), the No. 3 Democrat.

But even then, a single Republican can slow down Circuit Court nominees for up to 30 hours — a gambit that adds up over time. It’s just one more example of why the right isn’t exactly upset about the halting start.

“From their perspective, yes,” it’s a problem, said Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst, the No. 4 GOP leader and a more conservative member of party leadership. “From our perspective, it’s been great.”

India also sent relief materials on board a C-130J aircraft of the Indian Air Force to Syria on Tuesday.

Asked about sending aid to Syria when the country has been under US sanctions, Secretary (West) in the MEA Sanjay Verma had said that India is following the G20 mantra of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’.

“Sanctions don’t cover such humanitarian assistance,” he said.

Meanwhile, Syrian Embassy in India issued an appeal seeking help.

“Syria has been struck by a massive earthquake with 7.7 magnitude on Richter scale, which led to hundreds of death and thousands of injuries. Many buildings collapsed and people are still trapped under the debris. The Syrian government mobilised all its forces to meet the challenges and reach to the affected victims, providing them with shelter and essential supplies,” it said in its appeal issued in a statement.

“We are appealing to our Indian friends from all strata of society to come forward and help,” it said.

Politics starts over Saran violence, BJP says Jungle Raj is back in Bihar

    [ad_1]

Patna: After the violence in Mubarakpur village in Saran, the BJP targeted the Mahagathbandhan government of Nitish Kumar for the return of Jungle Raj.

BJP leader Neeraj Kumar Bablu went to Rubal hospital in Patna and met the injured persons.

“The way three persons were brutally assaulted in Chapra, it indicates that Jungle Raj has returned to Bihar and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is responsible for it. People of one particular caste are showing aggression. The local police failed to arrest the accused. All these things are being done by the people protected by the ruling parties,” Bablu said.

“Lalu Prasad Yadav had given the slogan of “Bhura Baal Saaf Karo” to target the Bhumihar caste. Now, it looks like the RJD has started the implementation of the slogan of Lalu Ji in Bihar. We condemn the brutal incident and demand from CM Nitish Kumar to ensure justice for the family members of the victims,” Bablu said.

Neeraj Kumar, JD-U MLC and chief spokesperson said: “The incident that happened in Chapra was extremely brutal and painful. It has challenged law and order. Some of the accused have been arrested and the police are carrying out raids to nab the other accused. The way the victims were held hostage in one room and brutally assaulted by the husband of the village head (Mukhiya), it looks like they want to spread poison in the society.”

“We will strongly act against the accused whoever they are. The local police have registered three FIRs so far and the statements of the injured persons have been recorded,” said Sunil Khopre, ADG (Law and Order) of the Bihar police.

“We have arrested 6 persons so far. Some people are trying to disturb peace in the region. Hence, we have imposed a ban on Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media till 11 p.m. on February 8. If anyone uploads provocative posts on social media, they will face action,” said Jitendra Singh Gangwar, ADG (Headquarter).

The incident happenned after three youths were held captive in a room on February 2 and assaulted by the men of Vijay Yadav, husband of the village head of Mubarakpur. One of the victims named Amitesh Kumar succumbed to his injuries on Monday.

Following his death, the relatives and a section of the villagers attacked the houses of Vijay Yadav and his supporters and set them on fire. They went on the rampage and set ablaze every vehicle including bikes, tractors, cars and others.

Following the violence and arson, the district police blocked off a four km radius area around Mubarakpur and deployed a large number of police personnel to bring the situation under control.
