Nitish reaches Delhi to meet opposition leaders, starts with Lalu Prasad

    [ad_1]

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who reached New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss the current political situation with opposition leaders, met RJD national President Lalu Prasad Yadav at the official residence of his daughter and Rajya Sabha member Misa Bharti.

JD-U national President Lalan Singh and Bihar Minister Sanjay Jha were also present at the meeting.

Nitish Kumar is on a three-day tour to New Delhi to meet opposition leaders of the country including Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, party President Mallikarjun Kharge and other leaders and prepare a plan for the Lok Sabha election.

    MS Education Academy

After the formation of Mahagathbandhan government in Bihar, he had urged Congress top leadership to take initiative in this matter as quickly as possible.

Nitish Kumar himself claimed last week that he had a telephonic conversation with Kharge, who had reportedly invited Nitish Kumar for a meeting to discuss the future plan of action in Bihar.

Bihar is crucial for the Narendra Modi government as it has 40 Lok Sabha seats. As the BJP is not ruling in the state, it would not be easy for it to succeed here.

The Bihar Chief Minister had also said that he will go to Delhi after the state Assembly’s Budget session, which concluded last week.

Nitish Kumar has been advocating opposition unity ever since he formed the government in Bihar with the Mahagathbandhan. During his visit to the national capital in September last year, he had met Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Arvind Kejriwal, D. Raja, Sitaram Yechuri and Akhilesh Yadav, a majority of whom he is likely to meet this time as well.

  • Election officials have ideas for stopping a 2024 crisis before it even starts

Election officials have ideas for stopping a 2024 crisis before it even starts

    [ad_1]

    election 2022 misinformation 79397

“Election officials do want elections to become boring again,” said Rachel Orey, the associate director of the BPC’s Elections Project and an author of the report. “We need to think more realistically about what it is that we actually need to do to improve elections.”

They might have their work cut out for them.

The explosion of election denialism, Orey says, has distracted “from the actual challenges that are undermining elections. If legislators’ attention is so focused on appeasing critics, they end up doing things that aren’t actually solving problems.”

One longtime recommendation they reup is to urge states to join or remain in the Electronic Registration Information Center — an interstate organization that helps states maintain their voter rolls — in an effort to make roll maintenance “a regular and uncontroversial part of the elections process.”

But what’s happening on the ground is the opposite. Several Republican-led states have left the organization over the last year after it was attacked by former President Donald Trump and his allies. Some affiliated with the organization fear more departures are coming.

BPC recommends improving funding for elections, a bugaboo for some in the field. The report’s first set of recommendations call for the state and federal government to supply more reliable funding for election officials.

The report argues that it is needed because “an increasingly interconnected, complicated, and contentious political environment means that vulnerabilities in one jurisdiction could cast doubt on the election and, ultimately, on American democracy as a whole.”

The report says states should “consider requiring that all ballots be in hand [of election officials] by the close of polls to be counted,” in an effort to expedite the amount of time it takes results to be tabulated. Election officials have become increasingly concerned about the window between when polls close and when a winner is clear, a time they say is ripe for bad actors to spread disinformation.

The idea would likely be unpopular with some Democrats who advocate letting ballots that are postmarked by Election Day and are received by officials days later to count.

That recommendation is part of one of the report’s other major goals, which is looking to have election results that are “trusted by candidates and the general public.”

That and other recommendations look to speed up ballot counting timelines, an effort to counteract “today’s rapid-information culture [that] perceives longer waits as inherently suspect.”

There is also a recognition that post-election work is just as important as what happens on Election Day.

BPC believes holding “cross-partisan” election audits could curb the misinformation that stemmed from states like Arizona, where the Republican-led state Senate ran a post-election review of Maricopa County that was widely panned by election experts as amateurish and fueling conspiracy theories.

“Getting some sort of agreed-upon, trusted approach to audit the process can really then enhance [elections],” said Scott Jarrett, who is co-elections director in Maricopa and a BPC elections task force member. “Not only for the near-term, but then for decades and decades of elections to come.”

The election certification process has been revealed as a weak point in American democracy. In the immediate aftermath of the 2020 election, allies of Trump targeted election certification in Michigan and elsewhere. And a handful of counties across the country had to be ordered by courts to certify some results during the midterms. Certification challenges might increase in the days after the 2024 presidential election,” the report warns.

Among other things, the report urges lawmakers to allow state election officials to step in if a local jurisdiction does not certify, and allowing for “courts [to] expediently intervene” if officials refuse to certify.

The ultimate goal of the entire report, officials say, is to have elections run smoothly. The thinking there is that if voters have a positive individual experience, they will be more trusting of the system overall.

But they acknowledge that the heat on election officials likely isn’t going away anytime soon.

“I would love for it to be boring again, and people aren’t paying attention, and they just show up, vote and are confident that their vote has been counted,” said Monica Holman Evans, another BPC task force member and the executive director of the D.C. board of elections. “But I don’t know if that’s likely to happen.”

Adani Power Limited starts supplying thermal power to Bangladesh

    [ad_1]

Godda: Adani Power Limited (APL), which is a part of the Adani Group, informed on Sunday about the start of its first 800 MW ultra-super-critical thermal power generation unit at Godda district in Jharkhand, and has also started supplying Bangladesh with 748 MW of power.

The APL stated in a release, “The electricity supplied from Godda will significantly improve the situation in the neighbouring country as it will replace expensive power generated from liquid fuel, bringing down the average cost of power purchased”.

The CEO of Adani Power Limited, SB Khyalia, said in a release, that the Godda Power Plant is a “strategic asset” in India-Bangladesh’s long-standing relationship.

    MS Education Academy

“It will ease the power supply in Bangladesh, making its industries and ecosystem more competitive. It is going to be the most efficient and environment-friendly thermal power plant installed in India and the entire South-East region and also one of the best in class in the world. It is the first power plant in the country, which has started its operations from Day One with 100% Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD), SCR and Zero Water Discharge,” the release added.

Adani Power further stated in the release that, in November 2017, Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) executed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with APL’s wholly-owned subsidiary Adani Power Jharkhand Limited (APJL) to procure 1,496 MW net capacity power from 2X800 MW ultra-supercritical power project at Godda.

“India’s largest power producer in the private sector is expected to commission its second 800 MW unit soon,” the release stated.

According to the release, Bangladesh has one of the largest liquid fuel-based power generation plants in the Indian sub-continent region. The installed capacity of heavy fuel oil (HFO)-based plants is about 6,329 MW and high-speed diesel (HSD)-based plants is about 1,290 MW, totalling to over 7,600 MW.

As per BPDB’s annual report for the financial year 2021-22, the total tariff of HFO-based plants is around BDT 22.10/kWh (USC 21/KWh) and the total tariff of HSD-based power plants is around BDT 154.11/kWh (USC 149/KWh), which is far higher than the tariff of Godda Power Plant (Energy cost estimated to be around 9 cents/KWh). Though at present, Bangladesh has long-term PPA ties with three other imported coal-based generators, the total tariff of Godda TPP is competitive compared to peers, the release further stated.

Notably, APL’s announcement on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Friday, read, “This is to inform that Unit 1 of 800 MW capacity of the 2×800 MW ultra-supercritical power project of Adani Power (Jharkhand) Limited (APJL), situated in Godda district in Jharkhand, has achieved commercial operations. APJL, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Power Limited, will supply power under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a corresponding net capacity of 748 MW from Unit 1 to the Bangladesh Power Development Board. Pursuant to the above, APJL has started processing its claims under the PPA with effect from April 6, 2023”.

APL stated in the release, that despite “several challenges”, including unprecedented waves of COVID-19, APJL had successfully synchronised the first unit with the power grid of Bangladesh on 29 November 2022 through a dedicated transmission line from Godda to Bangladesh in the presence of representatives from the government of Bangladesh.

Subsequently, the requisite transmission evacuation system on the Bangladesh side was commissioned in March 2023.

Accordingly, APJL again synchronised the unit 1 on 20 March 2023. The Reliability Run Test, including Commercial Operation Tests, was completed on 5 April 2023 in the presence of competent authority from BPDB and Power Grid Corporation of Bangladesh (PGCB) officials, the release added.

“The Godda Power Plant comprises two units of the latest technology available in the world, which is ‘Ultra Super Critical Technology’ with latest techniques for controlling emissions and consumption of coal and water. The Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) have been installed in the plant to minimise the emission and meet the latest environment norms of the ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEF). This plant is going to be one its kind in India and in Bangladesh, operating on the latest environment emission norms,” the APL further stated in the release.

Situation in Howrah’s Kazipara peaceful; CID starts probe into clashes

    [ad_1]

Howrah: The situation in Howrah town, which witnessed clashes between two groups during a Ram Navami procession, is peaceful and under control on Saturday, even as prohibitory order was still in force in the affected area, a police officer said.

Shops and markets opened as traffic movement started from the morning amid heavy deployment of police in Kazipara area.
Taking over investigations into the clashes, CID sleuths collected samples and spoke to local people as well as police personnel who were deployed there during Thursday’s clash, the officer said.

Prohibitory order under Section 144 of CrPC was still in force in Kazipara and Shibpur Police Station limits while Internet connections remained suspended.

“Situation is under control and peaceful. Life is leaping back to normalcy. We are, however, continuing with the police deployment there to keep a check on the situation,” the officer told PTI.

A CID officer said officers of the agency have started investigations into the case.

“At the moment, we cannot reveal much about the probe as it is in a preliminary stage,” the CID officer said.

Meanwhile, police continued with raids throughout the intervening Friday-Saturday night and nabbed a few more people for their alleged involvement in the vandalism.

Nearly 50 people were arrested in connection with the clashes.

“We will be verifying their involvement with video footage we have from the spot on that day. If found guilty they will be treated as per the law,” he added.

On Thursday evening, clashes broke out between two groups when a Ram Navami procession was passing through Kazipara in Howrah town.

Several shops were ransacked during the violence while a number of cars including a few belonging to the police were set on fire.
In renewed unrest, police personnel deployed in the area were pelted with stones on Friday afternoon following which prohibitory orders were imposed in the area and internet services were suspended.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday alleged that the BJP and other right-wing organisations were behind the violence.

The saffron party denied the allegations and demanded an NIA probe into the matter.

Governor C V Ananda Bose and the chief minister discussed the issue.

A press statement from Raj Bhavan said Governor Bose asked the state government to “ensure foolproof arrangements to maintain law and order effectively” besides action to be taken “against miscreants.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday spoke to Bose on the violence in Howrah and took stock of the situation.
Shah also spoke to BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar in this connection.

Google starts testing generative AI features in Gmail, Docc

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: After announcing the upcoming generative artificial intelligence (AI) features to Workspace apps two weeks ago, Google has now started public testing them in Gmail and Docs.

The current trusted test programme includes consumer, enterprise and education users (over 18 years) in the US, reports 9To5Google.

This “small group” is invited by the tech giant to join and they must sign up and opt-in.

The testers can also leave the programme at any time.

Users in the programme can use generative AI in Gmail to draft everything from a birthday invitation to a job cover letter.

“Users can also have Google take what they’ve written and make it more elaborate or shorten it, including down to bullet points,” the report said.

On the other hand, AI in Google Docs will make the text more detailed or rewrite it.

Also, it will help users to draft blog posts or even write song lyrics.

Participants in the test programme will be able to send feedback through Gmail and Docs.

The company will expand the availability of the generative AI features “over time”, the report said.
