Haj 2023: Saudi announces start of issuing permits for domestic pilgrims

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Haj and Umrah announced the start of issuing Haj permits to domestic pilgrims, starting  today, Friday, 15th of Shawwal.

In a statement, the ministry confirmed that completing the necessary immunizations is a prerequisite for issuing permits.

It indicated that the immunizations required to be taken are: the COVID-19 vaccine, the meningitis vaccine, and the seasonal influenza vaccine.

The Ministry of Haj indicated that the last time to complete the immunizations is ten days before the start of the Haj season.

It is noteworthy that the Pilgrims Housing Committee had announced the start of receiving applications for permits for buildings designed to accommodate pilgrims since September 2022, and it is still continuing until now.

On January 5, Kingdom announced the start of the registration period for the Haj pilgrimage 2023 for citizens and residents in the Kingdom.

On January 10, Kingdom announced that it will no longer impose limits on the number of pilgrims for this year’s Haj after three years of restrictions to curb the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Kingdom expects to receive two million pilgrims during this season.

The number of pilgrims during the 2022 season reached 899,353, including 779,919 from outside the Kingdom, while the 2021 season was limited to 60,000, compared to only 10,000 in 2020.

Saudi Arabia had received 2.5 million pilgrims in 2019, in the last season before the pandemic.

Lewis Hamilton hopes car upgrades will be ‘start of a new path’ for Mercedes

    [ad_1]

Lewis Hamilton has expressed cautious optimism that his Mercedes team are on the right track in terms of improving their car after a miserable start to the 2023 Formula One season.

Mercedes have already admitted they are to abandon their current car concept to adopt a new approach in an attempt to catch the championship leaders Red Bull and Hamilton believed his team were at least on the road to recovery.

Speaking before this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Mercedes have brought the first of what is expected to be a swathe of small developments to the car, Hamilton was encouraged by the direction the team were taking and hopeful that the car might demonstrate it in Baku.

“I think it will be an upgrade, naturally, but I think it will be kind of the start of a new path for us,” he said. “It will be at the core still the same car, but part of the path of getting where we want to be.

“We’re not going to hit the ground and be where we wanted to be at the start of the season, we’re not making up that crazy ground that there is but I think it’s really positive, that so much great work has been done back in the factory to make time to progress in the right direction.”

Hamilton scored Mercedes’ first podium of the season at the last round in Australia but the team did not read too much into the result, believing it was likely track specific. They are third in the constructors’ championship, nine points behind Aston Martin and already 67 behind Red Bull who have a dominant car, with Max Verstappen leading the drivers’ championship. Mercedes are expected to bring their first major development of their car’s new concept to Imola in May.

F1 is adopting its new sprint race weekend format in Baku, with qualifying for the GP on Friday and then a standalone qualifying and sprint on Saturday, limiting practice to only one session. Hamilton remained hopeful Mercedes could at least get among the front runners, while welcoming the introduction of four competitive sessions over a weekend.

“The last race was really great for us, we worked hard to get that sort of result,” he said. “It won’t be easy to do that again, the Ferraris will be quick, the Red Bulls, the Astons. I just hope we are in the mix and with the shake up of the whole weekend, it’s probably the most exciting weekend so far.”

  • Start with the font: Jay Rayner’s guide to choosing a good restaurant anywhere

Start with the font: Jay Rayner’s guide to choosing a good restaurant anywhere

    [ad_1]

All unfamiliar restaurants are terrible until proven otherwise. I’m not proud of this blunt statement. I have written about restaurants for so long because I love them, often in that heated adult way. Yes, there are the occasional skewerings, of the grossly overpriced and the grimly underperforming. But generally, I regard myself as a cheerleader. I want good places to prosper.

First, though, I have to identify them, and eating out is rarely a cheap gamble. Which means it’s not something anyone can treat casually. For me, it’s often relatively straightforward. I recognise the name of a chef or a restaurateur. I like what they’ve done before and can be reasonably confident about what they’re doing now. But sometimes, like everyone else, I have to take a punt. Perhaps I am visiting a town I don’t know well. Perhaps the new place is run by a team I’ve never come across before.

It’s time for detective work. It all starts with the menu, whether viewed online or in the window. Begin with the basics, by which I mean the typeface. Dismiss anywhere that uses comic sans or the like. If they have so little taste in typography, what hope is there when it comes to the food? Equally, be suspicious of somewhere that uses a grandiose italic. Aside from the fact that they’re so bloody hard to read, it’s also a clear signifier: it says “we take food Seriously” with a capital S. Is that your idea of fun? No? Move on. A menu should be physically readable.

Now we come to the words. Are they using redundant adjectives? If the menu feels the need to tell you that the squid is tender, find somewhere else. No restaurant intentionally serves rubbery squid. So why the hell are you telling me that yours is tender? Look out for other terrifying words. Are ingredients “nestled”? Is the dish “sumptuous”? Are there “medleys” or “symphonies”? If anything is described as “mouth-watering”, close down the browser. Back away from the window. Whoever wrote that menu is desperately overcompensating for deficiencies in the kitchen. A good menu should also be simply written.

Next up, how long is it? Half a dozen or so starters and mains? Fine. Any competent kitchen can manage that. But a dozen dishes a course? More? At that point I become suspicious that a freezer cabinet and a food service company are involved. The menus of restaurants cooking the food of China’s various provinces or the Indian subcontinent are an exception to this rule. Their menus can be much longer courtesy of permutations of ingredients. And yes, on those menus, photographs are fine.

If the menu writing has passed muster, check the prices. Add up a mid-range starter, main and dessert. How much is it going to be a head? Is that reasonable compared to bills you’ve settled recently? Now look at the wine list. Everyone forgets to check the wine list, which can be a source of both joy and of unhappiness. The food may seem reasonably priced, but if the cheapest bottle of wine is, say, £35, the bill is quickly going to mount up. How many bottles are there under £40? And have they arranged them in ascending order of price? Or have they done them by grape and region? If you love wine and your pockets are deep, go for it. Otherwise, stay away.

At this point, Google becomes your friend. Study the photographs that are available online. Does the look of the restaurant seem to match the cost? We are deeply into the subjective here, but there is now so much online you have significant evidence to go on. Does anybody in those pictures look as if they’re having a nice time? Which brings us to the last source of information: the online review. For God’s sake, don’t read them. There’s enough trauma in the world without volunteering to witness the brutalisation of the English language. But there can still be wisdom in crowds. You just have to locate the crowd. If there are fewer than 200 user reviews, there’s nothing of value here. Beyond that number you can usually pay attention to the scores, because at that volume few places are capable of influencing the overall result. Do the four- and five-star reviews vastly outnumber the one and two stars? If yes, then it may be cause for optimism.

In the end, of course, you do have to make a choice. You have to decide whether or not to book a table. And if, based upon all of these tests, you choose to do so and the place is terrible, if the cooking amounts to the victimisation of innocent ingredients, and the service would be banned under the Geneva convention, then you have one last option. Don’t eat there ever again.

Aurangabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Gaurav Yatra’ in support of late Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad district will start from April 2, BJP’s local leadership announced on Wednesday.

The Savarkar Gaurav Yatra in Aurangabad will commence on April 2 from Nirala Bazar where the statue of Savarkar is located, said BJP’s city president Shirish Boralkar. The Yatra will go on in one constituency for two days, he said.

Kolkata: Etihad Airways will resume flight services between Kolkata and Abu Dhabi on Sunday, the airlines said.

The flights, to be available every day, will be operated with an Airbus A320 aircraft, offering eight seats in business class and 150 in economy class, it said.

With the recommencement of services to Kolkata, Etihad will now fly to 14 destinations across the region — India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Maldives, it added.

The aircraft will depart Abu Dhabi at 9.10 pm local time, and land in Kolkata at 3.30 am. It will take off from Kolkata at 4.35 am, and reach the UAE capital at 8.15 am local time.

“Our return to Kolkata will come at the same time as we go double daily to New York, providing better access between India and the United States via Abu Dhabi, where our guests can take advantage of our US preclearance facility for a seamless arrival into the States,” said Martin Drew, the senior vice-president of global sales and cargo at Etihad.

Last week, low-cost carrier Air Arabia launched its services between Kolkata and Abu Dhabi, flying three days a week. It is also operating an Airbus A320.

Karnataka HC disallows bus transport strike scheduled to start tomorrow

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has put temporary brakes on the proposed transport strike called by a state transport corporation employees union known as the ‘Sarige Nigamagala Noukarara Samana Manskara Vedike’.

The strike in demand of wage revision, allowances and reinstatement of employees was to commence on March 24.

A Division Bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice Prasanna B Varale and Justice Ashok S Kinagi, which heard a public interest litigation (PIL) against the strike call on Thursday, opined that since there are public exams going on for students across Karnataka, any strike would put their future in jeopardy. Therefore, any strike should not be allowed during this period.

Directing that no strike should be undertaken till the next date of hearing, the court adjourned the case by three weeks. Notices were ordered to be issued to the transport union in the PIL.

The indefinite strike was earlier announced by the union which represents employees from the BMTC, KSRTC, NWKRTC and KKRTC.

The PIL against the strike said it would cause unwanted suffering to the public, especially students and those in need of medical help. Since various exams are being conducted at this point of time, students will be put to trouble jeopardising their education.

The government counsel apprised the court that the state is holding meetings with the transport employees and another round is scheduled with the representatives on April 6 at 11.30 am. The court then directed that no strike should be held for the next three weeks and adjourned the hearing.
