    SRINAGAR: The authorities on Tuesday said that May 10 and 11 will be “Traffic Dry Days” on Srinagar-Leh in view of the road widening work along the Sonamarg-Minimarg stretch.

    According to a communique,  SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir advised Ladakh-bound motorists to avoid travel on these days.

    “In view of widening work along the Sonamarg-Minimarg stretch of SSG road, owing to fresh snow fall in upper reaches of Baltal and Zojila, May 10 and 11 would be Traffic Dry Days on Srinagar-Ladakh road,” reads the communique.

    “As such all Ladakh bound motorists are informed through the medium of this advisory that they shall avoid travel towards Ladakh on the dates designated as Traffic Dry Days,” it reads—(KNO)

  • Srinagar-Leh Highway Shut Down As Avalanche Strikes Zojila Pass

    SRINAGAR: On Tuesday, due to an avalanche near Zojila Pass in Ganderbal district of central Kashmir, the Srinagar-Leh highway had to be closed for traffic.

    As per an official statement, following recent snowfall in the area, avalanches struck near Panimatha and Kai-Pathri on Zojila Pass. The official added that efforts are underway to clear the road with the help of men and machinery.

    In light of the snowfall and avalanches in several locations on Zojila axis, upward traffic was not permitted on the day in question, the official confirmed .(KNO)

    Srinagar-Leh Highway Thrown Open For Traffic In Record 68 Days

    SRINAGAR: The strategic 434 km long Srinagar-Leh highway was thrown open by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in a record 68 days, officials said Thursday.

    Talking to reporters after throwing the highway open for traffic officially, Director General Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Lt General Rajeev Choudhary said that it is always a toughest challenge to throw open Zojila pass. “It was due to the hard work of BRO officials and men that we were able to throw the pass open in a record number of 68 days. For the past three years, we have been breaking our own records,” he said, adding that first the road was thrown open in 110 days, then in 78 days and now in just 68 days.

    “Our efforts will be make the road through in just 60 days (two months),” he said. “BRO officials and men are fully acclimatized and familiar with the area. No equipment was damaged during the road opening process.”

    He said the locals who work with the BRO are being provided with adequate wages, shelter and food besides warm clothes. “Some people are with us since 25 years. We are like a family,” the DG BRO said.

    He said that early opening of this road helps save RS 7 Crore a day for the government. “This road helps to send defense equipment including guns, bullets and tanks besides troops to Ladakh. Similarly, the early road opening helps give an economic push to the Ladakh region who remain cut-off from the rest of the world for six months,” the DG said, adding that “people of Ladakh can come to Srinagar through this road and carry out their economic activities.     J-K: Landslide damages 9 houses on Srinagar-Leh highway

    Srinagar: Landslide damaged nine houses and a cowshed on the Srinagar-Leh highway, said officials on Monday, adding that there was no loss of life.

    Officials said that the landslide occurred in Rezin village of Sonamarg area in Ganderbal district on the Srinagar-Leh highway.

    “Landslides triggered by heavy rain in the area caused damage to 9 houses and a cowshed. There was no loss of life. The residents of damaged houses have been shifted to safer places.

    “Traffic on Srinagar-Sonamarg road has been restored,” officials said.
