New Delhi: The AAP appointed senior leader Priyanka Kakkar as its new national chief spokesperson on Saturday, party officials said.

AAP national general secretary (Organisation) Sandeep Pathak handed over a certificate of appointment to Kakkar.

Kakkar has been associated with the AAP since 2013.
She was the AAP’s Telangana observer from 2017 to 2019. She was also the legal head of the South Delhi parliamentary constituency and worked as an advisor to Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh from 2021 to 2023.
Kakkar served as the party’s legal observer of Uttar Pradesh, where she was also a member of a monitoring committee constituted for the state organisation.

Srinagar, Apr 16 (GNS): The University of Kashmir said on Sunday that it completely dissociates itself from allegations leveled by some students regarding alleged paper leak of Kashmiri subjects in the National Eligibility Test (NET).
A KU spokesperson said in a statement to GNS that the NET is conducted by the National Testing Agency, and not the University of Kashmir, and hence all the examination-related domains including confidential setting of question papers, conduct of examination and evaluation etc. fall solely within the jurisdiction of the conducting authority.
The University, the spokesperson said, strongly condemns that its name is being dragged into the alleged paper leak claim when the University, as an institution, is not even remotely connected with the process.
“We inform one and all to refrain from trying to harm the reputation of the University with baseless claims and allegations. The University reserves the right to take appropriate legal recourse in such situations since it concerns the institution’s reputation and prestige,” the spokesperson said. (GNS)

Biden eyes seasoned Dem operative to be State spokesperson

“We’re looking forward to announcing a new State Department spokesperson soon but have no personnel announcements to make at this time,” department spokesperson Vedant Patel said in a statement.
Miller did not respond to a request Monday for comment.
Miller is currently a partner at the strategic advisory firm Vianovo, where he advises boards, executives and well-known individuals on “government investigations, congressional inquiries, high-stakes litigation, activist campaigns, and social and political issues,” according to his firm’s biography. He is also an MSNBC analyst.
Miller served as director of the office of public affairs at the Justice Department in the Obama administration and has also worked as communications director for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.).

Russia and China want to disrupt the world order, NSC spokesperson says

Kirby said the United States would be watching carefully to see what emerges from the much-heralded meetings between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin this week in Russia.
“They have been increasing their cooperation and their relationship, certainly of late,” Kirby said of the two superpowers.
China recently floated a 12-point plan designed to end the Russia-Ukraine war. Kirby told host Mike Emanuel that the Biden administration remains dubious of China’s intentions when it comes to this war.
“What we have said before,” Kirby said, “and we’ll say it again today, that if coming out of this meeting, there’s some sort of call for a ceasefire, well, that’s just going to be unacceptable because all that’s going to do, Mike, is ratify Russian’s conquest to date.”
Kirby said he hoped China’s president would keep open “lines of communication” with President Joe Biden and also seek out the Ukrainian side of the story through discussions with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“We hope, and we’ve said this before, that President Xi will call and talk to President Zelenskyy because we believe that the Chinese need to get the Ukrainian perspective here,” Kirby said.

Ned Price to step down as State Department spokesperson

Washington: Ned Price would step down as the spokesperson of the State Department, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said as he credited him with resuming the department’s daily press briefings that had been sporadic during the Trump administration.
“Throughout the more than 200 briefings he has since held, he’s treated journalists – as well as colleagues and everyone else he interacts with – with respect,” Blinken said in a statement on Tuesday announcing Price’s departure as the spokesperson of the department.
Indian-American Vedant Patel, who is currently the Deputy Spokesperson, would be the interim spokesperson. Price’s replacement has not been announced yet.
“For people in America and around the world, Ned Price has often been a face and voice of US foreign policy. He’s performed with extraordinary professionalism and integrity. On behalf of the Department, I thank Ned for his remarkable service,” Blinken said.
Price previously served in the CIA and was spokesperson of the National Security Council during the Obama Administration. He resigned at the start of the Trump Administration.
Blinken said Price has helped the US government defend and promote press freedom around the globe and modelled the transparency and openness it advocates for in other countries. “His contributions will benefit the Department long after his service.” In a statement, Shaun Tandon, president of the State Department Correspondents’ Association, said the press corps at the State Department salute Price for restoring one of the pillars of American diplomacy — the Daily Press Briefing.
“From the moment he was appointed, Ned reached out to make clear that regular, substantive and thorough briefings were a priority and he has stayed true to his word. Even when he knew he would face intense scrutiny at the podium such as during the Afghanistan withdrawal,” Tandon said.
“Thanks to Ned, the Daily Press Briefing now seems routine and that is how it should be — it offers an opportunity for press from around the world to question the foreign policy of the United States, often critically, and requires the State Department to defend it. It is a tribute to the health of American democracy,” he said.

“Ned has also worked hard to ensure the rightful role of the press in covering the travels of the secretary of state. His more than two years on the job have thankfully been drama-free on travel, with Ned understanding and embracing the need for media to be present and to ask questions when Secretary Blinken represents the United States overseas,” Tandon said.

State Department spokesperson Ned Price to step down

“I started as a public servant as an analyst at the CIA, and I ended up in this job because of a series of accidents, fateful accidents,” Price told NBC News. “I have loved being in this line of work for the past several years. And one of the things I love most about it is the connection to the policy.”
Price previously worked as a CIA analyst and served as a spokesperson on for the National Security Council during the Obama administration.
In his statement, Blinken particularly thanked Price for bringing back the department’s daily press briefings, which were irregular during the Trump administration, praising Price for “giving journalists the chance to regularly ask tough questions of our policy.”
“Ned has helped the U.S. government defend and promote press freedom around the globe and modeled the transparency and openness we advocate for in other countries,” Blinken added. “His contributions will benefit the Department long after his service.”
Vedant Patel, Price’s current deputy, will serve as his temporary replacement, the State Department official said.

Yesterday, they should have watched the TV and known that the BJP has won with a thumping majority in the northeastern states where there are minorities. Many people in these places have supported BJP and the party has come into power.”
“As far as Telangana is concerned, BJP is the only alternative to all the parties in Telangana. AIMIM has friendly contested with TDP, Congress and also BRS,” he added.
“If they really have the guts and the support from the people of Telangana, they should contest at least 50 assembly seats in Telangana,” he further added.
He stated, “We challenge them that they should come to the people and the battleground and then convince the people that AIMIM is a secular party.”
“We demand that you should definitely contest and field at least 50 candidates in the upcoming 2023 assembly elections, as you have told in the public meeting so that people and also they (AIMIM) will know who is going to win,” he further stated

Delhi LG removes AAP spokesperson, ‘govt nominees’ on board of private DISCOMS

Delhi: Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has removed Aam Aadmi Party spokesperson Jasmine Shah and AAP MP ND Gupta’s son, Naveen ND Gupta from the position of ‘Government Nominees’ on the Board of Private DISCOMS.
The LG Office informed in a statement that they have been removed for “illegally” occupying the positions, and they have been replaced by senior government officers.
“Delhi LG, VK Saxena had ordered for the immediate removal of AAP Spokesperson, Jasmine Shah, Son of AAP MP, ND Gupta- Navin Gupta and other private individuals, who had been illegally appointed as Govt Nominees on the boards of privately owned DISCOMs- BYPL, BRPL (Anil Ambani) and NDPDCL (Tata),” the statement from the LG Office read.
As per the LG Office statement, the two had “collaborated” with private representatives on boards of Anil Ambani-owned DISCOMS and “benefitted” them to the tune of Rs 8000 Cr at the cost of the public exchequer.
The Finance Secretary, Power Secretary and MD, of Delhi Transco will now represent the government on these Ambani and Tata-owned DISCOMS, as per regular practice, followed since Sheila Dikshit’s time as CM, when these DISCOMS came into existence, the statement read.
“Invoking “difference of opinion” under Article 239AA of the Constitution of India, after the Arvind Kejriwal government persisted upon their continuance on these boards, despite proven misconduct and maleficence on their part, by way of benefiting the Ambani-owned DISCOMS to the tune of more than 8000 crores, at the cost of government exchequer, Saxena had referred the matter to the President of India for a decision.
He had asked for the removal of the above-mentioned political appointees on the DISCOM boards with immediate effect, pending the President’s decision, and asked for senior Govt officials to replace them on the boards of the DICOMS,” the LG Office statement read.
Senior government officials like the Finance Secretary, Power Secretary and representatives of Government-owned GENCOS and TRANSCO, had been the norm till Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP Government nominated party functionaries as ‘Government Nominees’ on the DISCOM boards.

The statement informed that the Delhi government which owns 49 per cent of the stake in the private DISCOMS used to nominate senior government officials so that the interests of the government and people of Delhi could be taken care of, in decisions taken by the DISCOM boards.
“However, these AAP nominees on the DISCOMS, in a quid pro quo arrangement involving commissions and kickbacks, instead of acting vigilant in the interest of the people and Government of Delhi, acted in cahoots with the BRPL and BYPL boards facilitated a decision by their boards to decrease the LPSC rates from 18 per cent to 12 per cent, and in the process unduly benefitted them to the tune of Rs 8468 crores- an amount that would have gone to the Delhi Government exchequer,” the statement read.

Tests ‘rule out a new stroke’ for Fetterman, spokesperson says

The senator went to the hospital on Wednesday after feeling “lightheaded,” his office said in an an earlier statement.
Fetterman, who suffered a stroke last May, left the Senate Democratic retreat on Wednesday and called his staff, who drove him to The George Washington University Hospital in Washington. Initial tests did not show signs of a new stroke, but he was kept overnight “for observation,” his office said.
“He is in good spirits and talking with his staff and family,” his office said. “We will provide more information when we have it.”
Fetterman, 53, suffered a stroke while campaigning for his Senate seat, winning the primary while still in the hospital and ultimately beating Republican candidate Mehmet Oz in the November election. The Pennsylvania Democrat’s cardiologist has said Fetterman suffers from both atrial fibrillation and cardiomyopathy.
His recovery became a major contention point during the campaign, especially after a televised debate with Oz in which Fetterman stumbled over words and struggled to string sentences together. Some Republicans questioned his ability to work as a senator, while supporters of Fetterman applauded his bravery.

Conducting fair probe, BJP spokesperson, others examined: Delhi Police to SC

New Delhi: The Delhi Police had told the Supreme Court that it is conducting a fair and unbiased investigation into the alleged hate speech made at a religious assembly in the national capital in 2021, and has examined Delhi BJP spokesperson, Sudarshan News editor-in-chief, Hindu Yuva Vahini members and others.
It added that the forensic science laboratory is scheduled to compare Sudarshan News editor’s specimen voice sample with the video from YouTube in March.
Delhi Police investigating officer, in an affidavit, said that Delhi BJP spokesperson Vikram Bidhuri, who was one of the participants has been examined, and Sudarshan News editor-in-chief Suresh Chavhanke was examined in the case on November 1, 2022 and “he was bound down u/s 41A CrPC”.
The affidavit added that the alleged hate speech video has been examined and the transcript has been prepared.
“Forensic Science Laboratory, Delhi has fixed March 17 for recording of specimen voice sample of Suresh Chavanke. Thereafter his specimen voice recording will be compared with the video/audio downloaded from YouTube…..effort is being made to obtain the details of the video of the speech made during the event and uploaded on YouTube, through the process of MLAT,” it said.
“That investigation of the case is being conducted fairly and without any bias.”
The police filed this affidavit in compliance with January 13 order passed by the apex court directing the investigating officer to place on record the steps which have been taken to pursue the investigation since the incident took place on December 19, 2021. The police have also requested Google Inc to trace the login-logout IP addresses of the video on YouTube from where the alleged video was uploaded.
“That in response to notice u/s 91 Cr.P.C., a reply dated November 18, 2022 was received on email from Google, LLC, Legal Investigations Support, informing that no records from the Google account holders, specified in the request, have been found,” added the affidavit.

The police have told the apex court that it has examined Hindu Yuva Vahini Delhi chief Rajiv Kumar, who booked the auditorium, General Secretary Sachin Vasisht, who organised the event, and Ashutosh Sharma who attended the meeting and uploaded the video on YouTube in the channel named as ‘Hishant Media’, besides several others.
“Some other participants who had attended the event have been identified and are yet to be examined,” added the affidavit
“A draft ‘final report’ has been prepared and was sent to the prosecution branch for scrutiny. However, some points have been raised by the public prosecutor and investigation on those points is being conducted.”
On January 13, the Supreme Court had pulled up the Delhi Police for registering FIR on the alleged hate speeches made at Dharam Sansad in Govindpuri in December 2021 after a lapse of five months and not making an arrest or filing a charge sheet till date. It had told the police that there was no palpable progress made in the investigation in the case.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud shot a volley of questions at Additional Solicitor General K.M. Nataraj after petitioner Tushar Gandhi said there was an explicit call for violence at the Dharam Sansad and in flagrant violation of the apex court judgment in Tehseen Poonawala directing expeditious action against hate-mongers, police have virtually not taken any action.
Gandhi’s counsel submitted that his client is not interested in contempt proceedings against the Delhi Police Commissioner but wants action to protect the secular fabric in the country.
The apex court is scheduled to hear the matter on Monday.
