Sherrod Brown ‘not entirely satisfied’ with Norfolk Southern response after latest derailment

Brown said he had spoken with state and local officials, including Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, who were all “pretty satisfied” with Norfolk Southern’s response to the Saturday crash. But Brown still wants more information about the latest crash, as well as the fiery derailment last month that caused residents of East Palestine to have to evacuate. Residents of that community have continued to express fears about threats to their health.
“People are still concerned. My couple trips in the last two weeks I’ve made to East Palestine, and the railroad’s still not answering all the questions,” Brown said Sunday.
Last week, Brown sponsored bipartisan legislation with newly elected Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) to tighten safety requirements on trains and increase fines on railroad companies. Brown said the chances that legislation will pass the Senate “are good,” but he’s unsure how the House will vote.
“I make no predictions in the House,” Brown said, adding later: “But you’d think a disaster that happened in East Palestine would have gotten their attention.”

Dems’ new primary calendar nabs support from Southern DNC members

“The past few elections have made it abundantly clear that the South is the new Democratic battleground, and by starting the presidential nominating process in South Carolina and incorporating Georgia into the early lineup, our party will only strengthen its commitment to these critical voters,” the statement reads in part. “The road to the White House runs through the South, and this calendar will ensure that the Democratic nominee is fortified for the general election.”
The statement is another sign of Democratic Party leaders smoothing out the path for Biden’s plan ahead of Saturday’s vote. The changes would remove Iowa and its caucuses from their longtime first-place status and challenge New Hampshire’s place as the first primary, though it would still be behind just one other state in South Carolina.
There’s still some pushback from New Hampshire Democrats about their new position in the order — splitting the second place slot with Nevada, ahead of new early states Michigan and Georgia. And a few Democrats, including Bernie Sanders’ former campaign manager Faiz Shakir, have raised concerns about putting South Carolina, a solidly red state, in first place.
In an op-ed, Shakir suggested putting North Carolina first, but North Carolina Democrats did not apply to be a part of the early window and one of North Carolina’s DNC members, John Verdejo, signed on to the statement of support for South Carolina.

Palestinian killed by Israeli soldiers in southern West Bank: Medics

Ramallah: A Palestinian was killed on Monday morning by Israeli soldiers in the southern West Bank city of Hebron, Palestinian medics and eyewitnesses said.
In a statement, the Palestinian Health Ministry said that Nsim Abu Fouda, 24, died after he was shot in the head by Israeli soldiers.
However, Palestinian eyewitnesses said Israeli soldiers stationed at one of the Israeli army checkpoints in the city centre opened fire at a Palestinian car and seriously wounded Abu Fouda. He died from his wounds in hospital.
The Israeli authorities did not comment on the incident, Xinhua news agency reported.
According to the Health Ministry, it is the third killing of Palestinians in the West Bank in the last 24 hours. Since January 1, the Israeli Army has killed 34 Palestinians, including children and women, in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
