Cong will win Karnataka; BJP’s south gateway will be closed: Moily

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Asserting that “winds of change” are blowing in Karnataka, senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily on Sunday claimed that his party will win at least 130 seats in the upcoming assembly polls and the gateway to South India for the BJP will be “totally closed”.

He also asserted that Karnataka has always played a crucial role in the formation of the government at the Centre and a victory in the upcoming assembly polls there will pave the way for the formation of a Congress-led government in 2024.

In an interview with PTI, former Karnataka chief minister Moily predicted that the Congress would not get any less than 130 seats in the 224-member assembly while the BJP would not cross the 60-mark in the May 10 assembly polls.

He also accused the Janata Dal (Secular) of colluding with the BJP and said that the people will reject the H D Deve Gowda-led outfit’s “politics of opportunism”.

“The winds of change are blowing in favour of the Congress. The BJP is totally in tatters. There is no unity and solidarity in the rank and file of the BJP and many of them are quitting after being denied tickets and seeking shelter under the Congress or some other party,” Moily said.

Alleging a total failure of governance under the Basavaraj Bommai government of Karnataka, the former Union minister claimed “corruption is rampant” in the state with the BJP dispensation “classified as a 40 per cent commission” one.

The BJP talked about a double engine government but could not get a single project cleared, he claimed.

“Not even a single big industry has come up (under BJP rule), no jobs have been created and many of the vacancies are still pending including that of teachers. Corruption is the talk of every street in Karnataka,” Moily alleged.

He said that even after the judgment in a tribunal giving Karnataka more share of water from the Krishna river, the BJP government has not issued a notification as a result of which the state has been denied its legitimate share of water.

Asked about the BJP banking on the ‘Modi factor’ and how the Congress would overcome a campaign blitz by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Moily said, “I don’t think in Karnataka that will happen. They tried it in Tamil Nadu but could not succeed. They came with the same factor and Amit Shah and Modi ran a high voltage campaign in Kerala but could not succeed. It also did not click in Himachal Pradesh and West Bengal.”

“With the Karnataka elections, the gateway to South India for the BJP will be totally closed,” he asserted.

Asked about the reported infighting in the Congress and both former CM Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar vying for chief ministership, Moily said the BJP has been talking about this but there is no substance in such talk.

“They (Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar) are going together for campaigning, there is no evidence of any fight between them,” he said.

Moily said both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar are claimants to the post of CM but it is for the newly-elected MLAs to decide before the AICC observers as to who would get the top job in the state.

While ruling himself out as being an aspirant of the CM post, Moily asserted that he was working to ensure that a Congress government is formed.

Moily, who is a member of the party’s central election committee, also rejected suggestions that there were major disagreements over ticket distribution.

“By and large there was no problem apart from one or two cases,” he said.

His remarks come amid reports that Siddaramaiah and Shivkumar drew a hard bargain for their respective supporters to get tickets and also there was much back and forth over whether Siddaramaiah should contest from two seats – Varuna and Kolar.

However, it was eventually decided that Siddaramaiah would contest from one seat and settled for Varuna.

Moily also stressed that the polls would be fought on local issues.

Accusing the Centre of seeking a merger between Amul and Karnataka Milk Federation brand Nandini, the Congress leader also said it became a controversy because Union Home Minister Amit Shah “indicated a merger”.

“People suspect that if the BJP comes back to power, they will allow Amit Shah’s wish to come true. Nandini in Karnataka is the best, there is no need for a merger,” he said.

Hitting out at JD(S) leader and former CM HD Kumaraswamy, Moily said even when the JD(S) was the junior partner, the Congress made him the chief minister but he failed to manage the government which was given to him on a “platter”.

The people will reject their politics of opportunism, he claimed.

“The behaviour particularly of Deve Gowda is to favour the BJP to safeguard the interests of his family. No raids have been conducted on the properties of his family that itself shows they are favouring the BJP,” Moily alleged.

Asked what message would the Karnataka polls send out for 2024, Moily said, “If you look at the history, Karnataka has always played a crucial role in the formation of the government at the Centre.

“The victory in Karnataka will pave the way for the formation of a Congress-led government at the Centre in 2024,” he claimed.

In the outgoing 224-member assembly, the BJP currently has 119 seats, followed by the Congress with 75 and the JD (S) with 28 seats. Two seats are vacant.

The Congress is seeking to wrest power from the BJP in Karnataka, the only southern state where the saffron party is in power.

While polling for the Karnataka assembly polls would take place on May 10, the counting of votes would take place on May 13.

After calls from south, Centre to hold CAPF exam in regional languages

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: After calls from Southern India to conduct the CAPF exams in regional languages and not just in Hindi and English, the Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the conduct of constable (general duty) examination for Central Armed Police Forces in 13 regional languages, in addition to Hindi and English.

The historic decision has been taken at the initiative of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to give impetus to the participation of local youths in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and encourage regional languages, an official statement said.

The CAPFs are the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the National Security Guard (NSG).

“In a landmark decision under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, (the) Ministry of Home Affairs has approved conducting constable (general duty) examination for CAPFs in 13 regional languages, in addition to Hindi and English,” it said.

In addition to Hindi and English, the question paper will be set in 13 regional languages — Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Odia, Urdu, Punjabi, Manipuri and Konkani.

The announcement comes days after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin wrote to Shah, calling him to include Tamil as a language for the written exam in the recruitment for CRPF personnel. Telangana minister KT Rama Rao had urged Amit Shah regarding the same.

In his letter, Stalin said that in the notification for the CRPF recruitment written exam, it was mentioned that the test could be taken in English and Hindi.

  • Gupta brothers are still South African citizens: Motsoaledi

Gupta brothers are still South African citizens: Motsoaledi

    [ad_1]

Johannesburg: The South African government said on Friday that fugitive businessmen Rajesh and Atul Gupta are still its citizens using the country’s passports amid reports that Indian-origin brothers have acquired Vanuatu’s citizenship.

South Africa said last week said that the UAE has turned down its request to extradite the two to face trial in the country on fraud and corruption charges.

The three Gupta brothers, Ajay, Atul and Rajesh are wanted in South Africa for their alleged roles in the looting of billions of rands from state enterprises. They are alleged to have used their closeness to former President Jacob Zuma to do this.

    MS Education Academy

The family fled to Dubai five years ago as the net closed in on them following Zuma’s ousting by his own African National Congress when he refused to step down.

“The Guptas are using South African passports, I just can’t tell when, because when you are a South African passport (holder) away from us, we won’t know. Our movement control system doesn’t show if you crossed into China (or anywhere else). It doesn’t show,” Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said.

The minister was reacting to media reports that the Guptas were now citizens of Vanuatu, a small island nation in the South Pacific Ocean east of Australia.

Last week South African Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said his government was “shocked and dismayed” after the UAE declined the request to extradite the Gupta brothers to face trial in South Africa on fraud and corruption charges.

Motsoaledi said the Guptas had acquired their passports irregularly from a corrupt home affairs official against whom action had been taken.

But the Department has no plans yet to cancel their passports or revoke the citizenship of the Guptas as an appeal to the UAE on the extradition request would then be meaningless, Motsoaledi said,

“We can’t take back the passport before we take away the citizenship. We have to start there. We are chasing them because we believe they belong to us. So, if we take away that citizenship, do we still have any rights?” the minister said.

A report in the Vanuatu Daily Post said Vanuatu’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) had advised Vanuatu’s Citizenship Office on the hostile information against the corruption-accused fugitive brothers on two separate occasions in 2018.

The Daily said the Vanuatu Citizenship Office and the Department of Immigration have declined to confirm or deny whether the Guptas are currently residing in Vanuatu.

Previous reports indicated that the Guptas were seeking asylum in the African nations of Cameroon and the Central African Republic.

Originally from Saharanpur in India, the Guptas built an empire in the IT, media and mining industries after first arriving in the country to start a shoe shop soon after Nelson Mandela was released from 27 years as a political prisoner to become the first democratically-elected president.

Seven percent of respondents support a presidential nomination for Scott. The South Carolina senator has not announced that he’s running for the GOP ticket in 2024, but he officially launched his presidential exploratory committee Wednesday.

The ruling was appealed by the Biden administration as lawmakers, including Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), called on President Joe Biden to use his executive powers to protect the drugs’ availability even sooner. Hundreds of thousands of patients in the United States use the medication both for abortions and treating miscarriages.

Mace sided with the outspoken Democrats, the first Republican to publicly do so.

“This is an issue that Republicans have been largely on the wrong side of,” she said. “We have, over the last nine months, not shown compassion toward women, and this is one of those issues that I’ve tried to lead on as someone who’s pro-life and just have some common sense.”

Mace said there’s “no basis” for the ruling, explaining that the Texas judge cited a Supreme Court decision, which was later overturned, for his decision.

Over the weekend, Rep. Tony Gonzalez (R-Texas) floated the idea of defunding FDA programs if the ruling is ignored. When asked about those comments, Mace emphasized that most Americans aren’t radically opposed to abortion access and would likely agree with the FDA’s authority to allow the drug’s sale.

“We are getting it wrong on this issue,” she said. “We’ve got to show some compassion to women, especially women who’ve been raped. We’ve got to show compassion on the abortion issue because by and large most Americans aren’t with us on this issue.”
