Bengaluru: Former Karnataka chief minister Jagadish Shettar is in talks with senior Congress leaders after resigning from the Karnataka Assembly over his candidature not being reconsidered by the BJP for the May 10 election, Congress sources said.

The sources told PTI that Shettar flew from Hubballi to Bengaluru on Sunday in a special helicopter and held discussions with Congress general secretary (Karnataka in-charge) Randeep Singh Surjewala, Congress state chief D K Shivakumar, former minister M B Patil and veteran Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa.

Shettar may join Congress on Monday, the sources added.

The six-time Hubballi-Dharwad Central MLA resigned from the Assembly on Sunday after his talks with Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and two Union ministers Pralhad Joshi and Dharmendra Pradhan the previous night failed.

Shettar alleged that he has been humiliated by denying him a BJP ticket and added that there was a systematic conspiracy against him in the ruling party.

Bhagwant Mann, Delhi ministers to accompany Kejriwal to CBI office on Sunday: Sources

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is scheduled to appear before the CBI on Sunday in connection with the excise policy case, will be accompanied to the federal agency’s office by his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann and cabinet colleagues, sources said.

They said besides Mann, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MPs and Delhi ministers will accompany the party supremo to the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) headquarters here.

Earlier in the day, Kejriwal said he will appear before the CBI in connection with the excise policy case and asserted that if he is “corrupt”, then no one in the world is “honest”.

    MS Education Academy

Addressing a press conference here over the CBI summons against him, the Delhi chief minister claimed that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders are demanding his arrest and said if the saffron party has “ordered” the agency to arrest him, it cannot refuse to do so.

The CBI has summoned Kejriwal in connection with the excise policy case. He has been asked to be present at the agency’s headquarters at 11 am on Sunday to answer queries of the investigating team, officials said.

The central agency has already arrested former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia in connection with the case.

It is alleged that the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22 to grant licences to liquor traders favoured certain dealers who had paid bribes for it, a charge strongly refuted by the AAP. The policy was subsequently scrapped.

Kejriwal is likely to visit Rajghat before reaching the CBI headquarters, the sources said. The AAP is planning to stage a protest against the CBI summons to Kejriwal on Sunday.

Sachin Pilot to go ahead with fast; it’s not targeted at anyone but graft, say sources

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress leader Sachin Pilot will go ahead with his daylong fast on Tuesday to press for his demand for action against corruption during the previous BJP rule in Rajasthan, with sources close to him saying his fight is against graft under the Vasundhara Raje regime and not targeted at anyone else.

The sources close to the former Rajasthan deputy chief minister also said that while Rahul Gandhi was fighting Adani over alleged corruption, likewise Pilot was taking up the issue to hold the previous Raje dispensation accountable.

The Congress has been strongly raising its voice against corruption in the country, be it on the Adani matter or by the Karnataka government. If action is not taken against those responsible for graft under the Raje government, then why would people take us seriously, a source close to Pilot said.

    MS Education Academy

The source said Pilot’s fast was not targeted at anyone in the Congress but was a “fight against corruption”.

The assertion by sources close to Pilot came after many saw the former deputy chief minister’s move of going on a fast as an attempt to pressure the high command to resolve the leadership issue ahead of the polls this year-end.

Another person in the know of things said Pilot had not been approached by anyone in the Congress to not hold the fast.

Pilot on Sunday alleged that the Ashok Gehlot-led government failed to investigate cases of alleged corruption during the BJP rule in Rajasthan and announced a day-long fast to press for action.

Without referring to Pilot’s demand, the Congress issued a statement in Delhi that its government with Ashok Gehlot as chief minister has implemented schemes that have benefited people and the party will seek a renewed mandate later this year “on the strength of these landmark achievements and the collective efforts of our organisation”.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of state Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said it was “not appropriate” for Pilot to hold a press conference in this manner and that he should have raised the issue with him first.

Pilot has said he will observe a day-long fast at Shaheed Smarak in Jaipur on April 11, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule who was from the Saini community to which Gehlot belongs.

At a press conference at his residence in Jaipuron Sunday, Pilot had said, “No action was taken (by the Gehlot government) on the corruption by the previous Vasundhara Raje government. While in the Opposition, we promised an inquiry into the mines scam of Rs 45,000 crore.”

He said he wrote to Gehlot last year on March 28 and November 2 on the issue but did not get any answer to his letters.

“With six seven months left for the elections, the opponents can spread an illusion that there is some collusion. Therefore, action will have to be taken soon so that the Congress workers feel that there is no difference between our words and actions,” he had said.

9 percent of India’s electricity to come from nuclear sources by 2047: Jitendra Singh

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: India will get 9 percent of its electricity from nuclear sources by 2047, the centenary year of the country’s independence, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said on Sunday.

The Science and Technology minister made these remarks after reviewing the functioning of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai.

Singh said the rising share of nuclear power in India’s energy basket would help it get closer to the commitment of achieving the net zero target by 2070.

    MS Education Academy

He said the Department of Atomic Energy has been given the target of achieving 20 gigawatts (GW) capacity of nuclear power generation by 2030, which will make India the third-largest producer of atomic energy in the world after the US and France.

Singh said the credit for this rapid stride goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi who took the decision of approving 10 reactors in a fleet mode in a single order and also allowed nuclear installations to be developed under joint ventures with PSUs.

India has the sixth-highest number of functional nuclear reactors in the world and the second-highest number of reactors, including those under construction.

During 2021-22, nuclear power reactors generated 47,112 million units of electricity, about 3.15 per cent of the total electricity generated in the country, Singh had told Lok Sabha last week.

The present installed nuclear power capacity is set to increase from 6,780 megawatts (MW) to 22,480 MW by 2031 on progressive completion of projects under construction and accorded sanction, Singh had said.

Close aide of Amritpal detained from Delhi, say police sources

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Special Cell of Delhi Police along with the Punjab Police has detained a close associate of fugitive radical preacher Amritpal Singh from West Delhi’s Tilak Vihar area, police sources said here on Thursday.

According to the sources, the man identified as Amit Singh was detained on Tuesday from Tilak Vihar after the police received specific inputs about his whereabouts. Delhi Police assisted the Punjab Police in this operation.

Singh works as an insurance agent.

In another development earlier in the day, the Haryana Police arrested a 28-year-old MBA degree holder unemployed woman for allegedly giving shelter to Amritpal Singh and his accomplice Pappal Preet Singh at her house in Shahabad town in Kurukshetra district. The woman has been handed over to the Punjab Police.

The accused, Baljeet Kaur, lives with her brother and father. Her brother works at the SDM office, while her father runs a milk business.

Kurukshetra Superintendent of Police Surinder Singh Bhoria said that Baljeet Kaur was in touch with Pappal Preet Singh.

“It is suspected that Pappal Preet and Amritpal stayed at Baljeet’s house on Sunday night. After some questioning, Punjab Police were intimated and the woman was handed over to them for further investigation,” Bhoria said.

Amritpal, against whom the National Security Act (NSA) has been invoked, has been on the run since March 18 despite a massive manhunt launched to nab him.

Families of Sisodia, Jain yet to vacate official bungalows: Sources

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The families of former Delhi ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain were yet to vacate their official bungalows, sources said on Tuesday.

Sisodia and Jain had been asked to vacate the bungalows on or before March 21, according to a letter by the Public Works Department dated March 14.

Weeks after their resignation from the Delhi Cabinet, their bungalows were allotted to newly inducted ministers Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj.

The PWD also asked Atishi and Bharadwaj to give their acceptance within eight days of the issuance of the letter. There was no official word on the matter from the government.

Sisodia had been staying at the AB-17 bungalow on Mathura Road, which was earlier with former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit.

The bungalow was allotted to Sisodia in 2015 when the AAP came to power in Delhi.

Jain was staying at the 2, Raj Niwas Marg, Civil Lines bungalow, which has now been allotted to Bharadwaj.

Following the resignations of Sisodia and Jain, currently in Tihar jail in cases corruption and money laundering respectively, two Cabinet berths had fallen vacant.

Their resignations were accepted by the President on March 7.

Atishi and Bharadwaj were later inducted into the Cabinet.

Sisodia was arrested by the CBI on February 26 in connection with alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy for 2021-22. Jain was arrested the Enforcement Directorate last year in a money laundering case.

Sources suggest Amritpal’s case may be handed over to NIA

    [ad_1]

New Delhi/Chandigarh: A source in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has suggested that the case of Amritpal Singh, the self-styled radical Sikh preacher and head of ‘Waris Punjab De’, may be transferred to the Central probe agency.

“There are possibilities that we might take over the matter. There is a terror link connected to Pakistan’s ISI and therefore the Home Ministry can decide to transfer the case to the NIA,” the source said.

As of now, Punjab Police are looking into the matter. Amritpal is currently on the run and there are speculations that he might have fled abroad.

Punjab Police are planning to book Amritpal under the provisions of National Security Act (NSA), sources privy to the development told IANS.

In the interest of public safety, the Punjab government has extended the suspension of SMS and mobile internet services, except voice call, till Monday noon.

Amritsar Deputy Commissioner of Police, Parminder Singh Bhandal, told the media that the police have set up 100 checkpoints in Amritsar and its outskirts to physically check vehicles. CRPF jawans are accompanying the policemen at the checkpoints.

Anticipating disturbance of peace, a large contingent of paramilitary force has been deployed outside Amritpal Singh’s native village, Jallupur Khaira in Amritsar district.

A special team of police, comprising personnel from seven districts, had followed the separatist leader’s convoy while he was on his way to Jalandhar’s Shahkot tehsil on Saturday.

“Amritpal’s vehicle was chased for 20-25 km. His vehicle was at the front. However, he managed to escape by changing his vehicle,” Police Commissioner Kuldeep Singh Chahal said.

Section 144 has been imposed in many districts of the state. The police have also increased security across Punjab. In addition, all vehicles are being checked on the Punjab-Haryana border.

Meanwhile, Amritpal’s father, Tarsem Singh, has told the media that the police should have arrested him before he left the house.

“We don’t have any information about his whereabouts. They carried out a search at our residence for 3-4 hours, but did not find anything illegal,” he said.

He also termed the police action as “unjustified”, claiming that his son was weaning the youth off drugs.

“Why are the police not acting against criminals and those involved in drugs trade,” he asked.

  • Amritpal Singh maintaining close links with ISI, terror groups: Sources

Amritpal Singh maintaining close links with ISI, terror groups: Sources

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Radical preacher Amritpal Singh, who is on the run following a police crackdown, has been maintaining close links with Pakistani intelligence agency ISI and some terrorist groups based abroad, official sources said on Saturday.

Amritpal Singh, who had even issued a veiled threat to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has been trying to destabilise the situation in Punjab by indoctrinating and attracting the Sikh youth into the fold of his outfit “Waris Punjab De”.

The radical preacher is believed to be a close associate of UK-based Khalistani terrorist Avtar Singh Khanda. Khanda is believed to behind Amritpal Singh’s meteoric rise, sources said.

Khanda is a trusted lieutenant of leader of the banned Babbar Khalsa International Paramjit Singh Pamma, who often holds theoretical training classes for the Sikh youth to radicalise them.

The trio have been aiming to destabilise Punjab by ideological indoctrination of the Sikh youth with extremist views, they said.

Khanda gives online demonstrations from Birmingham and Glasgow on how to make improvised explosive devices by using commonly available chemicals.

Amritpal Singh also has links with chief of the International Sikh Youth Federation Lakhbir Singh Rode, who is wanted in India in cases of smuggling of arms and explosives, including RDX, conspiracy to attack government leaders in New Delhi and spreading hatred in Punjab.

When Amritpal Singh was in Dubai, he was in close touch with Rode’s brother Jaswant.

The radical preacher was known for asking his comrades to stay armed and he formed a new group called Anandpur Khalsa Army (AKF). This group is always around him with dangerous weapons, they said.

Amritpal Singh, who was a transport operator in Dubai, came in contact with the ISI there, sources said.

The agents of the ISI believed to have told him to motivate the innocent young Sikhs in the name of religion.

After coming to Punjab, at the behest of the ISI, Amritpal Singh tried to spread the influence of his group ‘Waris Punjab De’.

Later, he launched a campaign called ‘Khalsa Waheer’ and strengthened his organisation by going to villages.

He stirred up the issues of Punjab and started inciting the Sikhs against the Government of India.

He has been successful in getting people to do what he wanted under the guise of religion and this helped the ISI to carry out its design in Punjab, they said.

Amritpal Singh was anointed the head of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ following the death of its founder – actor and activist Deep Sidhu – in a road accident in February last year. The event was held at Moga’s Rode, the native village of slain militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

A major police crackdown was underway in Punjab against radical preacher Amritpal Singh and his supporters over charges of spreading communal tension in the state.

Swiggy takes down ‘egg ad’ billboard for Holi after backlash: Sources

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Swiggy’s egg ad billboard for Holi has been taken down after a section of people expressed “outrage” on social media.

The advertisement said, “Omelette – Sunny side-up – Kisi ke sarr par. #BuraMatKhelo. Get Holi essentials on Instamart.”

Though there is no official statement from Swiggy on the matter, a source told PTI, “The billboard ads were only in Delhi-NCR and have been taken down now.”

Soon after the ad was put up, several people tweeted with the hashtag “HinduphobicSwiggy”, urging people to boycott the food and grocery delivery service provider.

All India Sadhu Samaj member and former president of the Kutch Sant Samaj wrote, “Hey @swiggy, it’s not okay to give selective gyan on Hindu festivals. Your Holi reel and Billboard is creating a wrong perception about Holi. You must apologize and take steps to promote cultural inclusivity.”

VHP leader Sadhvi Prachi also objected as she wrote, “Hey Swiggy, why don’t you give similar gyan on Eid/Christmas? Afraid of Sar Tan Se Juda gang? Since you serve diverse communities, it’s important for you to learn to respect all religions. Remove your Holi ads.”

While former president of Gujarat’s Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, Hardik Bhavsar said, “Immediately Uninstalled”, former BJP MLA from Uttar Pradesh Arun Kumar Yadav wrote, “By promoting controversial billboards and posting reel, #HinduPhobicSwiggy has hurt the sentiments of millions of people. Swiggy must apologize to Hindu community and remove them immediately, or face consequences. Why is their lack of similar Ads during non Hindu festivals?”
