  • Gulmarg receives 5cm snowfall, light rains in plains in J&K

    Srinagar, March 1 (GNS): Upper reaches received light snowfall with Gulmarg receiving 5-cm of it while rains lashed plains in Jammu and Kashmir. The weather department has forecast intermittent snowfall and rain during the next 24 hours in J&K.

    A meteorological department official here told GNS that mainly dry weather was expected during March 3 to 7.

    He said Srinagar received 0.6mm of rain, Pahalgam 0.7mm, Kupwara 2.1mm, Jammu traces, Banihal 1.2mm and Bhaderwah 1.1mm while Gulmarg received 5cm of snowfall in 24 hours till 0830 hours.

    Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 6.4°C against 4.0°C on the previous night and it was above normal by 4.9°C for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 5.0°C against 1.8°C on the previous night and it was 4.6°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 0.6°C against minus 1.2°C on the previous night and it was 4.1°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of 3.4°C against 3.0°C on the previous night and it was 3.3°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 2.0°C against minus 3.0°C on the previous night and it was 3.3°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 4.2°C against 2.8°C on the previous night and it was 4.2°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 14.2°C against 13.1°C on the previous night. It was 2.6°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 5.6°C (above normal by 3.4°C), Batote 6.8°C (above normal by 3.3°C), Katra 12.5°C (3.0°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 5.6°C (4.8°C above normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 5.6°C and 3.6°C respectively, the official added. (GNS)

    A meteorological department official here told GNS that scattered light rain and snow was expected for subsequent two days.

    Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 1.6°C, the same as on the previous night and it was above normal by 0.1°C for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 0.2°C, also the same on the previous night and it was 0.2°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    SRINAGAR: Parts of Kashmir Valley received rains and snowfall while metereological department on Tuesday forecast mainly dry weather in Jammu and Kashmir for now.

    Quoting a meteorological department official news agency GNS reported that upper reaches including Gulmarg received fresh snowfall with the world famous skiing resort recording 10 cms (4 inches) of it since overnight till 0830 hours today.

    He said that while Srinagar had traces of rain during the time, Qazigund recorded 4.3mm, Pahalgam 4.3mm, Kupwara 7.6mm, Kokernag 4.2mm, Banihal 0.6mm, Batote 0.2mm and Bhadarwah 1.4mm.

    Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 5.0°C against the previous night’s 5.3°C . Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 4.1°C for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 4.7°C against 3.7°C on the previous night and it was 4.8°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 0.8°C against minus 1.7°C on the previous night and it was 4.8°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of 3.7°C, the same as on the previous night and it was 4.4°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of minusv3.5°C against 0.2°C on the previous night and it was 3.2°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 3.1°C against 4.5°C on the previous night and it was 3.4°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 13.7°C against 15.5°C on the previous night. It was 3.1°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 6.2°C (above normal by 5.0°C), Batote 7.6°C (above normal by 4.1°C), Katra 11.7°C (3.2°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 4.7°C (4.1°C above normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh recorded a low of minus 5.6°C, the official said.

    The MeT has forecast mainly clear weathet at most places in next 24 hours.
    From February 22-25, the official said that mainly clear to partly cloudy weather was expected at most places.

    From, February 26-27, he said generally cloudy weather with possibility of light rain/snowfall over higher reaches at scattered places.

    SRINAGAR: As the weather conditions improved in Kashmir, the weatherman on Friday predicted another two-day wet spell in the Valley Kashmir from February 19.

    Quoting Deputy Director, Meteorological department (MeT), Dr Mukhtar Ahmad the news agency KNO reported that the weather would remain mainly dry tomorrow while there is a possibility of light rain and snow at isolated higher reaches of Kashmir on February 19.

    With the possibility of light rains, snow at isolated higher reaches of Kashmir, the weather would remain generally cloudy, he said, adding that on February 20th, there is a possibility of light rain in plains and light to moderate rain and snow in middle and higher reaches during 20th late afternoon to early morning of February 21.

    He further informed that from February 21-24th, the weather would remain occasionally cloudy with mainly dry weather.

    The Meteorological department has also advised people to stay alert and away from avalanche prone areas.

    Pertinently, the night temperature has increased at most stations of the Valley with Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir recording a low of 2.8 degree Celsius.

    The data available with KNO reads that Pahalgam in South Kashmir recorded below sub-zero temperature at minus 0.9 degree Celsius. It added that Gulmarg, a famous ski-resort, recorded 0.2 degree Celsius.

    It further added that minimum temperature at Kupwara, Qazigund and Kokernag was settled at 0.6 degree Celsius, 1.8 degree Celsius and 0.6 degree Celsius respectively.

  • Air traffic resumes after flight delays amid snowfall

    Srinagar, Feb 11 (GNS): After morning hiccups due to snowfall and reduced visibility, flight operations to and fro resumed at Srinagar International airport. While there were no cancellations, the morning delays caused some congestion in the afternoon, officials said.   

    “Our peak hour passenger capacity is 950. That is 450 arriving and 500 departing passengers,” Director airport Srinagar Kuldeep Singh Rishi said in a tweet, adding, “A slight weather disruption with a few delays results in bunching of several flights and consequent congestion.”

    Earlier, he said, visibility at the airport increased from 500M to 1000 M, allowing resumption of the air traffic at the airport.

    The operations resumed with the arrival of Vistara (UK643) and SpiceJet (SEJ8963) at the airport, he added.

    In the morning, as per GNS, the authorities had to divert a few flights due to reduced visibility amid light snowfall this morning.  (GNS)

    SRINAGAR: Snow is continuing to fall in Kashmir Valley including Srinagar and hilly areas of Jammu region on Saturday morning, officials said. Also minimum temperature recorded a drop across J&K with Gulmarg recording a low of minus 8.3°C.

    “Widespread light to moderate snowfall and rain was expected in Kashmir and hilly areas of Jammu with chances of heavy snowfall over higher reaches during next 24 hours,” news agency GNS quoted a meteorological department official as having GNS. The snow started this morning and when this report was filed, it was continuing.

    Meanwhile, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 0.5°C against 0.7°C on the previous night. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 0.3°C for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 0.0°C against 1.8°C on the previous night and it was 1.0°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 1.8°C (above normal by 0.6°C), Batote 2.4°C (below normal by 0.2°C), Katra 8.8°C (0.7°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 1.1°C (0.9°C above normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 10.4°C and minus 6.7°C respectively, the official said.

    While Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 has ended, Kashmir is under the grip of a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’. It will be followed by a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1.

  • No flight operation amid snowfall, low visibility in Kashmir

    Srinagar, Feb 11 (GNS): Air travel to and fro Srinagar International Airport was hit due to snowfall this morning as authorities diverted a few flights owing to reduced visibility on Saturday.

    A senior airport officer told GNS that visibility has reduced to 500 M while it was continuously snowing. “No flight operations have taken place since morning,” he said, adding, “We are waiting for weather to improve.”

    Already a few flights expected to arrive at the airport had to be diverted to New Delhi or Amritsar, he said. (GNS)
