    Rains lash plains in J&K, Gulmarg receives fresh snowfall

    Srinagar, Mar 25: Rains lashed plains while upper reaches including world famous skiing resort of Gulmarg received fresh snowfall, meteorological department here said on Saturday.

    According to an official of the MeT department, in last 24 hours till 0830 hours today, Srinagar received 8.7mm of rain, Qazigund 9.8mm, Pahalgam 9.4mm, Kupwara 4.8mm, Kokernag 13.6mm, Gulmarg 8.2mm, Jammu 22.3mm, Banihal 33.0mm, Batote 47.2mm, Katra 29.2mm, Bhaderwah 34.8mm and Kathua 37.8.
    Gulmarg received 3.8 cms of fresh snowfall during the time, the official told GNS.

    The Met department also forecast scattered to fairly widespread light rain/thunders in plains and snowfall over upper reaches in Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. For subsequent two days, the weather department predicted mainly dry weather with possibility of “isolated very light rain and thunders”.

    Regarding temperature, the MeT official said, Srinagar recorded a low of 5.0°C against 5.3°C on the previous night and it was 0.8°C above normal for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 4.6°C against 4.0°C on the previous night and it was 0.9°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 0.5°C against 0.6°C on the previous night and it was 0.9°C ‘below’ normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of 3.8°C against 4.7°C on the previous night and it was 0.5°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 1.0°C against 0.0°C on the previous night and it was 0.6°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 3.4°C against 4.0°C on the previous night and it was 0.2°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 13.2°C against 14.9°C on the previous night. It was 2.3°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 2.2°C (below normal by 3.1°C), Batote 3.5°C (below normal by 4.6°C), Katra 10.0°C (2.5°C below normal) and Bhadarwah 3.0°C (0.9°C below normal).(GNS)

    SRINAGAR: Weather department on Friday forecast rain and thunderstorm at scattered places in plains and snowfall over upper reaches of JK in next 24 hours.

    “Intermittent rain and thunderstorm accompanied by gusty winds at scattered places is expected whereas snowfall is likely over higher reaches from March 18-20,” a meteorological department official said, adding, “there is no forecast of any heavy rain and snow during the time.”

    He said farmers are again urged to postpone spraying of orchards during the period.

    Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 6.6°C against 5.5°C on the previous night and it was 1.9°C above normal for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 4.5°C against 4.2°C on the previous night and it was 0.9°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 1.6°C against 0.8°C on the previous night and it was 1.5°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of 4.6°C against 6.3°C on the previous night and it was 1.1°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of 0.5°C against 1.5°C on the previous night and it was 2.8°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 4.3°C against 3.2°C on the previous night and it was 1.2°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 14.3°C against 15.0°C on the previous night. It was 0.6°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 6.2°C (above normal by 1.3°C), Batote 7.3°C (above normal by 0.6°C), Katra 12.5°C (0.1°C below normal) and Bhadarwah 4.6°C (0.7°C above normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh and Drass, he said, recorded a low of minus 3.2°C and minus 3.6°C respectively. (GNS)

    Army rescues 400 tourists stranded in Sikkim after heavy snowfall

    Gangtok: Army personnel rescued around 400 tourists stranded in Sikkim following heavy snowfall and later provided emergency assistance, including medical care and food, to them, defence officials said on Sunday.

    Defence spokesman Lt. Col Mahendra Rawat said that around 400 tourists, including 142 women and 50 children travelling approximately in 100 vehicles got stranded on Saturday afternoon while returning from Natu La and Tsomgo (Changgu) Lake and soldiers of Trishakti Corps, in collaboration with police and civil administration, swung into action and launched rescue mission “Operation Himrahat”.

    “The relief and rescue operations continued through late on Saturday night. The tourists were moved to safe areas and provided shelter, warm clothing, medical aid and hot meals. The troops arranged accommodation for the stay of all the tourists,” Lt. Col Rawat said.

    He said that on Sunday morning, the road opening was taken up with assistance of the Army’s General Reserve Engineering Force bulldozers and by 9 a.m, the road was cleared to enable movement of the vehicles to Gangtok.

    The quick reaction by the troops provided relief and comfort to the stranded tourists under inclement weather conditions and ensured early clearance of road to enable movement of vehicles to Gangtok. The stranded tourists and civil administration expressed their deep gratitude for the immediate relief provided by the Army.

    Indian Army, while guarding the border in super high-altitude areas of the Himalayas, are always proactive in providing assistance to tourists and local population, the defence spokesman said.

    “The weather is expected to be partly cloudy with possibility of intermittent light rain (light snow over higher reaches) at isolated places of Kashmir Division in next 24 hours,” a meteorological department official here said.

    He said mainly clear to partly cloudy with dry weather was expected from March 6 to 12.

    In last 24 hours till 0830 hours, he said, Srinagar recorded 0.6mm of rain, Qazigund 1.8mm, Pahalgam 16mm, Kokernag 4.4mm, Gulmarg 2.4mm, Bahihal 2.8mm, Batote 3.0mm, Bhaderwah 0.3mm while Gulmarg received 0.6cm snowfall.

    A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a low of 7.4°C against 6.4°C on the previous night and it was above normal by 5.2°C for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 6.5°C against 4.2°C on the previous night and it was 5.6°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 1.2°C, same as on the previous night and it was 3.5°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of 4.7°C against 4.8°C on the previous night and it was 3.8°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 1.8°C against minus 1.0°C on the previous night and it was 2.7°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 3.6°C against 4.2°C on the previous night and it was 2.6°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 13.0°C against 13.2°C on the previous night. It was 0.7°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Quoting an official from meteorological department, news agency  GNS  reported that in last 24 hours till 0830 hours, Srinagar received 5.7mm of rain, Qazigund 12.3mm, Pahalgam 18.1mm, Kupwara 8.7mm, Kokernag 8.8, Gulmarg 14.4mm, Jammu traces, Banihal 17.6mm, Batote 26.2mm and Bhaderwah 25.4mm.
