Snow Leopard Documented For The First Time Through ‘Camera Trap’ In South Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Amid the ongoing population assessment of snow leopards in Jammu & Kashmir, the elusive animal has been officially documented in Kishtwar for the first time through a “camera trap” sighting, according to an official on Tuesday.
Dr M K Kumar, the Regional Wildlife Warden Jammu, said that despite being aware of the presence of snow leopards in the area, they captured the sight of the animal for the first time on three occasions through a camera trap. He added that on the first occasion, two snow leopards were spotted in a single frame, and on the second and third occasions, one was present.
Dr Kumar explained that J&K is part of the nationwide population assessment for snow leopards, and the assessment of the population of the animal is taken up through a multi-layered approach, which includes the assessment of habitats through questionnaires and landscape patterns. He further added that the population assessment of the animal started in 2021-22, and before drawing any conclusion, they would require one full winter and summer to make any valuations.
Dr Kumar said that currently, they cannot speculate on the population of snow leopards, as they are in the mid-process of documentation, and this process involves not only camera trapping but also multiple computer-based programming and parameters.
He further mentioned that as the snow leopard was sighted on camera in Kashmir in the upper reaches of the Baltal-Zojila area last year in November, there is high potential for the presence of snow leopards in the Tatakuti landscape in Poonch-Rajouri are. However, they have not done any research in that particular area.
It is pertinent to mention that in 2021, the wildlife protection authorities in Jammu & Kashmir started a population census of snow leopards as part of the nationwide population assessment of the elusive species. The census was carried out on the directions of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC). (KNO)

Srinagar Leh Highway Shut Down By Snow Avalanche

SRINAGAR: The Srinagar Leh highway was closed for traffic on Monday afternoon after a snow avalanche blocked the road near Cafeteria Morh in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
A Beacon official informed that the SSG road is blocked due to a snow avalanche near Cafeteria Morh. Meanwhile, several vehicles are stranded in the Sonamarg area after the road got closed.
An official said that men and machinery have been pressed into service to clear the road. (KNO)

Snow avalanche hits 5 vehicles near Gumri, ‘People on board rescued: SSP Kargil

Sonmarg, Apr 16: At least five vehicles on way to Kargil from Sonamarg came under a snow avalanche on Sunday afternoon near ‘Sahiatan Nallah’ Gumri.
Shaitan Nallah Gumri area falls between Zojila and Drass. The vehicles mostly trucks that came under the snow avalanche were laden with eatables and other goods and were on way to Kargil.
SSP Kargil Inayitullah Chowdary told news agency Kashmir News Trust that all the people present in the vehicles were rescued and the operation is on to retrieve the trapped vehicles.
He said at least five vehicles were hit by the avalanche. [KNT]

Says Main Activity On April 17,18; Weather System To Affect Transport In Hilly Area, Cause Water-Logging In Low Lying Areas
Srinagar, April 16 (GNS): Weather department has forecast light to moderate rain and snowfall (over higher reaches) from April 17-20 with “main activity” on Monday and Tuesday.
“During this wet spell, thunderstorms with strong gusty wind reaching (20-30KMPH) and hailstorm is also possible at some places of Jammu and Kashmir,” a meteorological department official here said.
He said there is possibility of temporary disruption of surface transportation especially over hilly and snowbound areas during April 17-18. Besides, he said, there could be water-logging in low lying areas, damage to orchards as well as “abrupt” fall in day temperature by 7-8°C.
Regarding temperature, the official told GNS that Srinagar recorded a low of 10.9°C against 9.1°C on the previous night and it was 3.0°C below normal for the summer capital.
Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 7.8°C against 6.2°C on the previous night and it was 1.3°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.
Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 5.2°C against 4.6°C on the previous night and it was 3.4°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Kokernag recorded a low of 8.6°C against 10.6°C on the previous night and it was 2.1°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 3.8°C against 7.0°C on the previous night and it was 1.5°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.
In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 10.2°C against 5.6°C on the previous night and it was 0.1°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.
Jammu recorded a low of 26.0°C against 21.2°C on the previous night. It was 6.1°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.
Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 9.7°C (above normal by 1.3°C), Batote 14.0°C (above normal by 2.6°C), Katra 19.0°C (1.9°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 9.1°C (1.9°C below normal). Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of 1.6°C and 6.1°C respectively, he said. (GNS)

Watch: Rare snow covers Al Baha region in Saudi Arabia

Riyadh: Al Baha region in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) known for its majestic mountains and picturesque landscape, on Monday was hit by unusual hail and snowfall, local media reported.
Cumulus thunderstorms brought unusually high rainfall, closing many roads and disrupting traffic in the area.
Video clips shared on social media platforms showed an accumulation of hail causing vehicles to get stuck on the closed roads.

Emergency crews from the municipality had to remove stones and hail from the roads while the city’s parks turned white.
Despite the disruption, the unusual weather brought excitement to the area, with many motorists stopping by to enjoy the cool, mild weather.
Children and young adults were seen having fun on the mountainsides and snow-covered roadsides.

Sikkim: No tourist left under snow, search operations called off, says officials

Gangtok: A Sikkim government official Wednesday said it is now “almost certain” that no one is left strapped under the snow at 15th Mile, the site of the devastating avalanche and search operations by the Army and the Border Road teams have been called off.
But helpline numbers will remain active for the time being to help tourists get information about their kin, Gangtok district collector Tushar Nikhare told reporters here.
“We are almost certain that no more tourists are trapped under the snow near 15th Mile,” Nikhare said.

The Army, NDRF, ITBP, GREF, Sikkim Police and two personnel from Tiranga Mountain Rescue Team equipped with radars searched all possible areas near 15th Mile to find out any tourist lodged under the snow. But nobody was found there during the rescue and search operations that were carried out from 8AM to 3PM before being halted, the Gangtok DC said.
The rescue teams used digging and trenching machines and other modern equipment to find people trapped under the debris at the place, which is a few km short of Nathu La, but none was found, he said.
The road between Nathu La and Gangtok is open but no tourist vehicle will be allowed to ply till permission is granted after taking note of the weather conditions, he said.
The avalanche that took place near the high Himalayan pass between Tibet and India on Tuesday has claimed seven lives and trapped under it an estimated 25-30 people, besides six vehicles, officials said.
Nikhare said that the incident was not an avalanche but a ‘snow slide’ and it has been clarified by top authorities.
A snow slide is an avalanche of snow, while an avalanche is a large mass of snow, ice, earth, rock or other material down a mountainside or over a precipice.

Describing a snow slide as a “once in a life time incident”, he asserted that Sikkim is otherwise is a safe place for tourists and other visitors.
Lessons have been learnt from the ‘snow slide’ and precautionary measures like signages indicating dangerous areas, no parking zones and instruction about not crossing the limits of visiting areas will be put up at 15th Mile and surrounding areas, the official said.
Meanwhile, the post mortem of all seven retrieved bodies were carried out at the STNM here and five of them been handed over to their next of kin. The bodies of the remaining two persons will be taken by the relatives tomorrow, officials said.
The state government will provide all assistance to the kin of the victims and the injured will be provided treatment free of cost, they added.

53 Vehicles Rescued Amid Snow Storm On Razdan Pass

SRINAGAR: Authorities in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Tuesday rescued 53 vehicles, along with their drivers and passengers, who were trapped in the snow at Razdan Top on the Bandipora-Gurez road.
Quoting an official, KNO reported that the rescue operation was carried out on Tuesday, following information about the stranded vehicles in adverse weather conditions.
He said that the Police personnel immediately swung into action and braved the challenging weather conditions to rescue the stranded vehicles and their passengers, taking them to a safer place.
The official said that the Bandipora-Gurez road has been closed due to heavy snowfall, with the Dawar in Gurez receiving around 03 inches of snow, and the Tulail area in the region receiving more than 06 inches of snow.
Notably, the Bandipora-Gurez road typically remains closed during the winter months due to heavy snowfall in the area.
