    SRINAGAR: Scores of protestors, mainly women, chanted slogans against PDD, asking the latter to stop the installation of smart-meters in the area and restore the electricity, which according to them was snapped on Wednesday.

    The protesters blocked the main road near JLNM Hospital, causing a standstill for few hours.

    “We had protested against the move yesterday also, following which the authorities snapped the electricity to the area,” a protesting woman said.

    “We request the government not to install any more meters in our area and remove those already installed here”, they said adding “We will pay as per our consumption but only want these smart meters be removed from here.”

    “We have been protesting for a long time now, but no one is listening to us”, they said.

    Few people from administration later on visited the site to pacify the protesters following which they dispersed peacefully.

    When contacted, Chief Engineer KPDCL said that the electricity will be restored once the inhabitants allow them to install smart meters. “The way these smart meters are to be installed across Kashmir, likewise will be installed in Rainawari also”, he said.

    Meanwhile, SHO Rainawari Syed Junaid said that the protestors dispersed peacefully after a police team visited the site. (GNS)

    Jammu, Mar, 12: The Jammu and Kashmir administration disconnected electricity connections of many people in Jammu, including former CM and Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) chief Ghulam Nabi Azad, BJP State president Ravinder Raina and former BJP MLA Neelam Langeh, for non-payment of arrears, reported Daily Excelsior.

    Azad has not paid the bill of four lakh rupees. Similarly, Langeh has not paid the bill of Rs 1 lakh. Taking action on this, the Electricity Corporation has disconnected the connections.

    At present, Ravinder Raina is living in Gandhi Nagar 14A, Neelam Langeh in Gandhi Nagar, while Azad is living in Bungalow No.1 Gandhi Nagar. According to the Electricity Corporation, action has been taken on the instructions of higher officials. Earlier, notices were issued to all these leaders and three days’ time was given to clear dues but nothing happened during this period.

    Taking action on Saturday, the team disconnected the connections. Issuing the order, the Corporation said, now action will be taken against other influential people as well. In the past too, many times the Electricity Corporation has been giving opportunities to the people to pay the bills. Initiatives have also been taken to pay the bills in easy installments under the Amnesty scheme.

    The officials of the Electricity Corporation have disconnected more than 400 connections in Valmiki Colony. Along with this, power has also been cut from two transformers of 400 KV. Apart from this, the connection of Estate Department and Floriculture Department has also been disconnected.

    BJP State President Ravinder Raina said that he is on a tour of Rajouri-Poonch and came to know that the electricity in the security guard room has been cut off.

    DPAP chief Ghulam Nabi Azad’s PA Dil Nawaz said that the Electricity Corporation had mistakenly cut off the electricity at Azad’s official residence, which was later restored. The electricity bill is being paid by the Estate Department.

    SRINAGAR: Jammu Power Distribution Corporation (JPDCL) is reported to have snapped the power supply lines to the residences of Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ravinder Raina. They have not paid their bills.

    A Delhi newspaper said they confirmed from one of the relatives of Azad and the power line has been snapped on Saturday.

    Other politicians whose power supply lines have been snapped for non payment of tariff include BJP’s Neelam Langeh, a Ramban lawmaker.

    All the three like-minded politicians are living in government owned accommodation Gandhi Nagar.

    Off late, authorities have started resorting to denial of service in two cases. In Srinagar, a locality saw the power supply being snapped for the resident’s campaign against the installation of power meters. A report from Jammu said residents of Balmaki Colony have also had their power supplies snapped as they had not paid their bills for a long time.

    Reports said a restaurant chain is also going to face music for not paying the power arrears.

    The power supply halt came after a poor response to the amnesty scheme announced y the government asking 550 thousand consumers across Jammu and Kashmir to clear an outstanding of Rs 937 crore in easy instalments.

    SRINAGAR: The government on Wednesday said that around ten percent of smart meters have been  installed so far and the rest of the installation process will be completed by the next two years.

    Chief Engineer, Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL), Javed Yousuf Dar said that the electricity will be snapped from the areas where the people will object and halt the smart meter installation.

    He urged people to not halt the process of smart meter installation, adding that the government has already created awareness in this regard.

    The Chief Engineer further said that a total of 80,000 smart meters have been installed so far and the rest are being installed. “The process to complete the smart meters installation will be completed by the next two years,” he said.

    Pertinently, a few areas of Habba Kadal are reeling under darkness as authorities have snapped the electricity after the people staged protest over the installation of smart meters in the locality. (KNO)
