Google to shut Jacquard smart fabric app in April

San Francisco: Google has confirmed that it will be shutting down the app responsible for the Jacquard accessories made by the company’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group in April.

Jacquard, a full-scale digital technology platform created for smart apparel, footwear, and other everyday essentials, was unveiled by Google in 2015 and debuted two years later on special jackets from Levi’s, reports 9to5Google.

Google’s Jacquard technology can embed touch sensors and haptic feedback into clothing, which can then be paired with a smartphone.

In effect, these smart jackets — and later smart Yves Saint Laurent backpacks — allowed users to perform specific (customisable) tasks on their phones without ever touching them.

A double-tap, for example, could play/pause music, brushing the smart fabric could change tracks, and briefly covering the sensor would mute/unmute notifications, the report said.

Several companies have released products that incorporate Google Jacquard since its initial release.

Last year, Google shut down Duplex on the Web, a technology that enables Google Assistant to automate certain user tasks for site visitors.

The company introduced Duplex on the Web during its 2019 Google I/O developer conference.

Duplex on the Web enables Google Assistant to perform different actions on the sites.

Electricity Snapped In Srinagar Areas As Residents Object To Smart Meter Installation

SRINAGAR: Scores of protestors, mainly women, chanted slogans against PDD, asking the latter to stop the installation of smart-meters in the area and restore the electricity, which according to them was snapped on Wednesday.

The protesters blocked the main road near JLNM Hospital, causing a standstill for few hours.

“We had protested against the move yesterday also, following which the authorities snapped the electricity to the area,” a protesting woman said.

“We request the government not to install any more meters in our area and remove those already installed here”, they said adding “We will pay as per our consumption but only want these smart meters be removed from here.”

“We have been protesting for a long time now, but no one is listening to us”, they said.

Few people from administration later on visited the site to pacify the protesters following which they dispersed peacefully.

When contacted, Chief Engineer KPDCL said that the electricity will be restored once the inhabitants allow them to install smart meters. “The way these smart meters are to be installed across Kashmir, likewise will be installed in Rainawari also”, he said.

Meanwhile, SHO Rainawari Syed Junaid said that the protestors dispersed peacefully after a police team visited the site. (GNS)

India’s smart home security camera market grows 44 pc

New Delhi: India’s smart home security camera market shipments experienced 44 per cent (on-year) growth in 2022, a report has said.

Xiaomi led the market in 2022 with a 33 per cent share. Tapo registered 88 per cent growth and maintained its second position in 2022 with a 17 per cent share, according to Counterpoint Research.

The market remains dominated by Chinese players, with the Indian brands accounting for 23 per cent of total shipments last year.

EZVIZ jumped to the third spot with a 16 per cent share as its shipments almost tripled.

Shipments in the Rs 1,500-Rs 2,500 price band remained the highest in 2022, capturing 64 per cent share.

“In a price-sensitive market such as India, the entry-level price point of smart cameras (Rs 1,500) also creates a big demand pull,” said research analyst Varun Gupta.

“Smart cameras are gaining more popularity among small and medium retailers as they are less expensive and easy to install,” Gupta added.

In terms of features, the 2MP camera remains popular among users, but we expect the 3MP camera to gain more traction as it is becoming more affordable.

Senior research analyst Anshika Jain said that indoor smart security cameras accounted for more than 80 per cent of the total shipments.

“It was mainly driven by increased awareness and importance of indoor home security. Even residential developers are increasingly installing smart camera devices due to the hybrid work model,” she added.

CP Plus is a well-known Indian brand in the surveillance industry and is taking big strides in the smart camera market as well. It ended 2022 with a top-10 position and 2 per cent market share.
