AAP slams EC ruling on Shiv Sena factions, calls it part of BJP’s ‘Operation Lotus’

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday condemned the decision of the Election Commission of India to recognise the faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as the real Shiv Sena and said it was an extension of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s “Operation Lotus”.

“Operation Lotus” is a term used by opposition parties alleging foul play on the part of the BJP to topple governments in states by poaching legislators and bringing about splits in ruling parties.

The Election Commission (EC) on Friday allotted the name ‘Shiv Sena’ and its poll symbol ‘bow and arrow’ to the group led by CM Shinde, in the process delivering a big blow to Uddhav Thackeray, whose father Bal Thackeray founded the outfit in 1966.

Institutions like the EC are acting as though choreographed to singularly benefit the BJP, whose culture is one of naked power grab through any means, AAP Mumbai president Preeti Sharma Menon said in a statement here.

“The conduct of EC will even put the proverbial ‘caged parrot’ to shame. Under BJP rule, institution after institution has been destroyed and have been reduced to mere ‘puppets’ and ‘rubberstamps’. The Election Commission is no exception. We have regressed as a democracy,” she alleged.

“The EC order is an extension of Operation Lotus,” she said, adding the Modi government at the Centre and the (state) governor were dubious in their conduct to give an illegal defection (rebellion by Shinde) the colour of a party takeover.

These dangerous acts strike at the very foundations of federalism of our Constitution, she said, adding the BJP’s undemocratic nature is reflective of the RSS’ anti-constitutional psyche.

Meanwhile, the party’s national joint secretary and working president Ruben Mascarenhas said the lotus blooms in dirt and Operation Lotus succeeded with the Congress and Shiv Sena “because there was dirt there”.

He said it did not succeed with the AAP as it is clean and has a playbook to defeat the BJP.

Chidambaram slams George Soros over ‘revival of democracy’ remark

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress leader and former finance minister P. Chidambaram on Saturday reacted sharply to George Soros’s “revival of democracy” remark.

In a series of tweets, he said, “I did not agree with most of what George Soros had said in the past and I do not agree with most of what he says now. But to label his remarks as an “attempt to topple the democratically elected government in India” is a puerile statement”.

The former union minister further said in the tweet that the people of India will determine who will be in and who will be out of the government of India.

“I did not know that the Modi government was so feeble that it can be toppled by the stray statement of a 92-year-old rich foreign national”, he said in another tweet.

He further said to ignore George Soros and listen to Nouriel Roubini. “Roubini warned that India is increasingly driven by large private conglomerates that can potentially hamper competition and kill new entrants”.

“Liberalisation was to usher in an open, competitive economy. The Modi government’s policies have created oligopolies”, he concluded in the tweets.

  • UK MP Blackman slams BBC documentary on PM Modi as ‘propaganda’

UK MP Blackman slams BBC documentary on PM Modi as ‘propaganda’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Terming the BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a ‘propaganda video’ and a ‘disgraceful piece of shoddy journalism,’ British MP Bob Blackman has said that it should never have been released and that it didn’t look at the ‘all-important fact’ that India’s Supreme Court investigated the claims against Narendra Modi in connection with the 2002 riots and found that there is not a shred of evidence to support them.

In an interview with ANI, Blackman also talked about the issue “around the review of the British Broadcasting Coropration’s (BBC) tax affairs” in the context of Income Tax department’s survey at its offices in India and said, “this is nothing new and has been going on for quite sometime”.

He said there have been discussions between the Income tax authorities in India and the BBC and the broadcaster has to follow the relevant rules and regulations.

Blackman is a member of ruling Conservative and MP for Harrow East, said that as Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2002, Narendra Modi had done his best to try and appeal for calm during the riots.

Blackman accused the BBC documentary of casting aspersions and said it is extremely regrettable because it would seem as if there was some sort of agenda of BBC to disrupt UK-India relations. “I think that’s a great shame.”

Noting that the British government regards India as a strong friend, a strong ally and the two countries were negotiating a trade deal, he said anything that disrupts the process is extremely regrettable.

The British MP said the Indian government has done a remarkable job under PM Modi of transforming the country’s economy and it is on track to become the leading economy in the world.

Blackman said the BBC video on PM Modi was “full of innuendos” and it was produced by an external organisation and overseen by the British broadcaster.

“The so-called documentary which is more of a propaganda video, if you like in a two-part series… (was) disgraceful piece of shoddy journalism with an attack on Narendra Modi, both in his time as Chief Minister of Gujarat and then his time as Prime Minister….(was) completely full of innuendos,” the British MP said.

“It should never have been broadcast by the BBC because the BBC has a worldwide reputation. People think, oh my goodness, this must be true. But, it was produced by an external organisation, overseen by the BBC….it (documentary) is far from the truth… it actually did not look in detail into the causes for the Gujarat riots 20 years ago and it certainly didn’t look at the all important fact that the Supreme Court thoroughly investigated all the claims against Narendra Modi and found that not a shred of evidence to support them,” he added.

Bob Blackman has been the Conservative Member of Parliament for Harrow East since 2010. He was Greater London Assembly member for Brent and Harrow for four years, after ousting the Labour Leader on the GLA in June 2004.

According to his website, Blackman was also a Councillor for the Preston Ward in Brent for 24 years, serving as leader of the Brent Conservatives from 1990 to 2010, before stepping down in order to stand as the Conservative candidate for Harrow East.

The UK MP said that as Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2002, Narendra Modi had looked to additional police resources, not only within Gujarat but beyond and eventually had called in the army to help quell the riots.

“They showed a film of him making appeals for calm and encouraging people to not to riot…. (they) put a whole series of different montages together with different people… I don’t know people involved but it was clear they had an axe to grind against Narendra Modi,” Blackman said.

The central government had last month issued directions for blocking YouTube videos and Twitter posts sharing links to the controversial BBC documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’.

The Ministry of External Affairs had termed it a “propaganda piece”, saying it reflected a “colonial mindset”.

Referring to the tax survey, Blackman said BBC has to ensure “they are caught with the rules and regulations”.

“Obviously, this is a survey where the income tax authorities have looked to gather the evidence to establish if the BBC is doing anything wrong, I would say quite openly, this is the BBC’s job and operating within India, is to make sure they are caught with the rules and regulations, and I am sure it will be cleared up very quickly, but you know that’s upto the tax authorities so… (for) BBC to make sure they are caught up with the rules that operate here,” he said.

The British ruling party MP said that some sections were seeing the action as an attack on the media which according to the MP was not an accurate assessment.

“It’s a review, it is a survey….the moment there haven’t been suggestions of charges or anything like that…let the authorities operate, let the BBC act as they have done in an open and transparent way, providing access to all the records and all the information and let the tax authorities come to their conclusion. I trust that we clear up very quickly because it is for the benefit of the tax authorities and for the BBC.”
Income Tax-related surveys at BBC’s India offices started on Tuesday.

Sources had said that the Income Tax department conducted a survey at BBC’s offices in Delhi and Mumbai in view of its “deliberate non-compliance” with the “Transfer Pricing Rules and its vast diversion of profits.” The survey concluded on Thursday.

Asked if the BBC documentary could in some way be reflective of the view of the British government, Blackman dismissed any such suggestion and said the BBC is not an arm of the British government.

He said the British government regards India as a strong friend and a strong ally.

“Let’s be very clear, the BBC is not an arm of the British government. In fact, the BBC is frequently critical of the British government and, actually to be fair, critical of all the British government that has been that’s their job, their job is to ask questions, to look for evidence. But the key here is you can ask questions but when there is evidence to the contrary and it’s quite clearly not the case, then you shouldn’t be casting aspersions. I think that is the difference here, which I think it is extremely regrettable because it would seem as if there was some sort of agenda of the BBC to disrupt UK-India relations,” said Bob Blackman to ANI.

Blackman said he had asked the British government of its policy and was told that BBC is an independent organisation they must do whatever they choose to do but it is not the policy of the British government.

“The British government regards India as a strong friend and a strong ally. We signed an agreement a year ago, now an agreement on security, defence and other matters and that demonstrates the goodwill between our countries. We are two countries with a shared past and tremendous future ahead of us and we are at the moment negotiating what could be an incredible free trade deal which would benefit India and the United Kingdom. So, anything that disrupts that is extremely regrettable, particularly when it’s with our foundation,” added Blackman.

He expressed hope that the documentary episode will not impact relations between India and UK.

Answering a query, he said one thing he agreed with in “the propaganda video” is the final comments which said that Narendra Modi and the BJP government will probably be re-elected next time and the time after.

“So they deserve it because the Indian government have done a remarkable job under the Narendra Modi of transforming the economy in India, leading India to become the fifth biggest economy now in the world, on track to become the leading economy in the world, by the way it is going and the most populous country in the world. We also have to celebrate that India is the biggest democracy in the world where the government can be replaced if that’s what the people decide,” said Blackman.

“From that perspective, it’s very important that we build the friendship, we build the relationship between the two countries and we do so because obviously India has the G20 role this year.”

Blackman, who has been an MP since May 2010, said, India will be welcoming the leaders of the world this year and “it’s important that we cement our good relations”.

“If we don’t, that would be detrimental to India and also to the United Kingdom,” he said

Illinois governor slams ‘demagogues’ who attack schools, libraries

    [ad_1]

illinois governor state of the state 53377

    Pritzker didn’t mince words.

“It’s an ideological battle by the right wing, hiding behind a claim that they would protect our children — but whose real intention is to marginalize people and ideas they don’t like,” Pritzker told a joint session of the Illinois General Assembly gathered in the state Capitol for the first live address since before the pandemic. “This has been done in the past, and it doesn’t stop with just snuffing out ideas.”

Pritzker described “a virulent strain of nationalism plaguing our nation,” and he criticized “demagogues” attacking school board members and library trustees.

He also invoked historical parallels to the current climate.

“This is the Land of Lincoln. We have a responsibility to that legacy,” he said.

Then Pritzker quoted Wiesel, the Holocaust survivor and Nobel Laureate: “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”

The governor made his comments after laying out a budget agenda focused on education funding.

“It’s all meaningless,” he said, “if we become a nation that bans books from school libraries about racism suffered by Roberto Clemente and Hank Aaron, and tells kids they can’t talk about being gay. It signals to Black and brown people and Asian Americans and Jews and Muslims that our authentic stories can’t be told.”

That passage of his speech drew a standing ovation from Democrats seated on his right in the chamber and silence from Republicans at his left.

Pritzker then invoked his two college-age children.

“I don’t want them to be lied to,” he said. “I want them to learn our true history, warts and all.”

    Running feud

The speech follows Pritzker writing the College Board, which oversees Advanced Placement exams, to urge the group not to appease DeSantis by changing the African American studies course.

Earlier this week, DeSantis doubled down on the issue, threatening to withdraw state support for AP programs.

DeSantis’ threats and Pritzker’s comments in his Springfield address add fire to a feud between the two governors ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Both have been mentioned as potential candidates for their respective parties.

DeSantis is all but expected to jump into the GOP primary and face former President Donald Trump. Pritzker has repeatedly said he will be supporting President Joe Biden for president.

Pulwama anniversary: Digvijaya slams centre for ‘blatant intelligence failure’

    [ad_1]

On the fourth anniversary of the Pulwama terror attack, as the nation paid respect to the forty slain CRPF jawans, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh restated the opposition’s regularly repeated allegation that the incident was the consequence of an intelligence failure on the part of the Modi government.

“Today we pay homage to the 40 CRPF Martyrs who died because of the blatant Intelligence Failure in Pulwama. I hope all the Martyred Families have been suitably rehabilitated,” he tweeted on Tuesday.

The former Madhya Pradesh chief minister’s tweet comes about a month after he made a remark about the same attack and the 2016 surgical strikes in Jammu and Kashmir at the final leg of the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra.

“In Pulwama, forty of our CRPF personnel were martyred. CRPF officers had requested that personnel be airlifted, but Prime Minister Modi refused. How could such a blunder occur? No report on Pulwama has been presented to Parliament to date “Singh stated this at a public rally in Jammu on January 23.

The Congress veteran had stated there was ‘no proof’ of the surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army’s special forces after that month’s Uri terror attack on an army camp,’ and accused the Modi government of ‘spreading lies.’

The Grand old party had distanced itself from his remarks. Even Rahul Gandhi dismissed his remarks and said the army ‘does not need to give proof of its actions.’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and several BJP leaders on Tuesday paid tributes to the CRPF personnel who lost their lives in the attack.

PM Modi tweeted, “Remembering our valorous heroes who we lost on this day in Pulwama. We will never forget their supreme sacrifice. Their courage motivates us to build a strong and developed India.”

Shah tweeted, “I pay homage to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives in the ghastly terror attack in Pulwama on this day in the year 2019. The nation can never forget their sacrifice. Their valour and indomitable courage will always remain an inspiration in the fight against terrorism.”

BJP chief J.P. Nadda said, “I pay a heartfelt tribute to all those brave hearts martyred in Pulwama on this day and recall their supreme sacrifice and dedication to our country. Their valour and selfless service to the nation is a source of inspiration for every citizen and will always be remembered”, in his tweet.

    Pulwama attack

On 14 February 2019, a convoy of vehicles transporting Indian security personnel on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was attacked by a vehicle-borne suicide bomber in the Pulwama region of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The attack killed 40 Indian Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officers as well as the culprit, Adil Ahmad Dar, a Pulwama-based Kashmiri youth. The Pakistan-based Islamist terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed responsibility for the attack. India blamed neighbouring Pakistan for the attack, but Pakistan condemned it and denied any involvement.

VHP slams Jamiat’s Arshad Madani over his ‘Manu worshipped Allah’ remark

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The VHP on Sunday hit out at Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind chief Maulana Arshad Madani over his claim that “Om” and “Allah” were the same God worshipped by ‘Manu’, saying his remarks have exposed his “real” mindset.

The remarks by Madani at an event organised to promote amity drew objections from a prominent Jain monk who stormed off the stage along with a group of other religious leaders.

“Was it a ‘Sadbhavna Sammelan’ or a gathering of Jamiat’s poisonous group?” Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) national spokesperson Vinod Bansal said in a video statement, reacting sharply to Madani’s remarks.

The way Madani tried to assert “his supremacy and that of Islam” with his comment in the presence of “Hindu dharma gurus” at the event exposed his real “mindset and character”, Bansal charged,

“You talk about religion and indulge in sinful acts. Shame on you… The mindset of this Jamiat’s gathering will now have to be driven away from this country,” Bansal said.

In a tweet in Hindi, Bansal alleged that an attempt was made to attack the Jain monk at the “Jamiat’s forum” and demanded that Delhi Police take action in the matter.

“Attempt to murderous attack Jain Acharya Lokesh Muni Ji Maharaj at Jamiat Forum is very serious and condemnable. @DelhiPolice should immediately arrest the culprits and his associates,” the VHP leader said.

  • The College Board slams DeSantis administration comments on African American studies

The College Board slams DeSantis administration comments on African American studies

    [ad_1]

“While it has been claimed that the College Board was in frequent dialogue with Florida about the content of AP African American Studies, this is a false and politically motivated charge,” the College Board said in a lengthy statement.

“Our exchanges with them are actually transactional email about the filing of paperwork to request a pilot course code and our response to their request that the College Board explain why we believe the course is not in violation of Florida laws,” it added.

The new statement is the latest in a tense battle over who is responsible for the outcome of the new framework for the course, which will launch in the 2024-2025 school year. The College Board has been preparing the course for about a decade and included the expertise of more than 300 professors of African American Studies from more than 200 colleges nationwide as it decided which subjects would be in the curriculum.

The Florida Department of Education claims that state officials had been in contact with the College Board since January 2022 regarding the course and first questioned if it was legal under state law in July. In a July letter, the DeSantis administration claimed the pilot course would violate the state’s anti-“woke” laws that restrict how race can be taught in the classroom.

The College Board argued that its revisions were completed by Dec. 22, which the nonprofit said came “weeks before Florida’s objections were shared.”

A new course framework —which excluded the lessons on Black queer studies and Black Lives Matters that were in a pilot of the course — was released in early February and almost immediately sparked outrage from Democratic governors who accused the nonprofit of catering to DeSantis. However, those topics were listed as potential ideas for students to pursue in their 1,500-word mandatory project. Nevertheless, the nonprofit has faced severe scrutiny from Democratic governors, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and education advocates since the unveiling.

DeSantis claimed victory immediately. The College Board has been fighting ever since to prove neither Florida or any other state has influenced the curriculum for the AP African American Studies course.

Florida officials have said they are “grateful” that the College Board removed some 19 topics from the African American Studies framework, which the state said included “discriminatory and historically fictional topics.”

Florida education officials this week released a letter to show they initially raised questions in July about whether the Advanced Placement coursework was legal under the state’s laws. The a letter proves communication between the state and the nonprofit, but the College Board said they responded to a September letter from Florida officials that rejected the course.

The letter to the College Board, the nonprofit wrote, was “like all written communications we received from Florida, contained no explanation of the rejection.” The nonprofit called state state officials, which it said it would do with any state, but slammed the state education department, saying their calls were “absent of substance, despite the audacious claims of influence FDOE is now making.”

“We have made the mistake of treating FDOE with the courtesy we always accord to an education agency, but they have instead exploited this courtesy for their political agenda,” the College Board said, adding that it “politely thanked them for their feedback and contributions, although they had given none.”

The College Board contends that the state officials did not offer feedback and did not bring any experts to their calls, but sent its second January letter “as a PR stunt which repeated the same rejection but now with inflated rhetoric and posturing.”

“We deeply regret not immediately denouncing the Florida Department of Education’s slander, magnified by the DeSantis administration’s subsequent comments, that African American Studies ‘lacks educational value,’” the College Board said in a statement on Saturday. “Our failure to raise our voice betrayed Black scholars everywhere.”

The Florida Department of Education is expected to review the AP course for consideration in schools starting next fall.

Akbaruddin Owaisi slams Centre for failing to release funds to Telangana

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Extending complete support for the Telangana government’s annual budget for 2023-24, AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre for failing to release the funds and to allocate projects to Telangana.

Taking part in the discussion on the annual budget in the Assembly on Wednesday, the AIMIM floor leader said the Centre was only giving 2/3 of amount to Andhra Pradesh and 1/3 of amount to Telangana from the taxes collected from the respective States and other than this, the Centre was not extending any help for the development of Telangana State.

He alleged that the union government was not honouring the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act and it didn’t deliver a single promise mentioned under the Act.

Stating that the revenue was drastically declined to States after the introduction of GST, Akbaruddin Owaisi advised the Telangana BJP leaders to bring a mount pressure on the Union government for bringing funds to Telangana, instead of criticising the BRS government.

Reminding that the Centre has abolished the facility of pre-metric scholarships to Minority students, the AIMIM leader urged the State government to think over the introduction of a similar scheme in Telangana so that Minority students will continue to get a financial aid during their education.

He also asked the State government to release all the arrears related to the Minority community and students and fillup all teaching and non-teaching posts lying vacant in the Universities across the State.

Ramcharitmanas row: Chhattisgarh CM slams Yogi, Maurya

    [ad_1]

Raipur: Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Friday said the row over some parts of Tulsidas’ epic ‘Ramcharitmanas’ allegedly being against women and those from backward communities was being created by leaders in Uttar Pradesh as part of vote-bank politics.

The ‘Ramcharitmanas’ issue was set off in UP by Samajwadi Party leader Swami Prasad Maurya who claimed on January 22 that some portions insult a large section of society on the basis of caste and had sought that they be “banned”.

“It (controversy) suited both (UP CM) Yogi Adityanath and Maurya to garner votes. However, people face the wrath (of such tussles), while essential issues are ignored,” Baghel told reporters.

Asserting that “two or four couplets” do not make any difference to such a great epic, Baghel said one must adhere to social reformer Vinoba Bhave’s advice that the merits of any religious book or philosophy must be discussed in the present context.

He said Bhave advised that the basic elements (of the book or philosophy) must be discussed and its subtle facts must be accepted after consideration.

“This controversy is wrong. Ramcharitmanas was written 650 years ago by Tulsidas while Valmiki had written it much earlier. There is no need to accept it as it is written in the current situation. You should accept good things from Ramayana and the things you don’t like, leave it,” the senior Congress leader said.

Tulsidas had faced opposition at the time for writing Ramcharitmanas in Hindi but he must be credited for taking the epic to every household, Baghel asserted.

“By creating controversies around such small issues, you are just doing politics of votes,” Baghel said without naming anyone.

BJP slams AAP for questioning ED over excise policy case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The BJP on Friday slammed the Aam Adami party and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for questioning the Enforcement Directorate’s supplementary chargesheet filed in connection with the excise policy case.

Addressing a press conference here, BJP leader and Union minister Meenakshi Lekhi said, “Anyone trying to question the ED is trying to question the apex court. The judiciary has upheld that ED’s job is to mitigate corruption in the country. The way the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is questioning the ED, it is becoming clear that Arvind Kejriwal is with those who indulge in corruption. Kejriwal does not want corruption to end in this country.”

She also alleged that the ED chargesheet makes it clear that “AAP has an alliance with unregulated businesses”.

“The ED has proved through its investigation that AAP was indulging in corruption under the guise of liquor policy. Along with this, the agency also revealed that Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia were also involved in this,” Lekhi said.

The court on Thursday took cognisance of the supplementary charge sheet filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against five individuals and seven companies in connection with alleged irregularities in Delhi excise policy, which was withdrawn last year by the AAP government after a CBI probe was recommended into the matter.
