Sukhbir slams AAP for ‘undeclared emergency’, ‘reign of repression’ in Punjab

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Badal on Monday came down heavily against “the puppet AAP regime in Punjab for the undeclared emergency and reign of repression and terror let loose in the state”.

He also warned against “dangerous conspiracies to defame the most patriotic Sikh community for communal polarisation and electoral gains”. “The same conspiracies were hatched and implemented by the Congress in the past and now the present regime is following in their footsteps to set Punjab on fire,” he claimed.

The Akali President said the government-led by Parkash Singh Badal had pulled the state out of the bloody cycle of terror and repression and started an era of peace and progress. “But the governments that followed have pushed the state back into the jaws of insecurity and repression reminiscent of the dark and tragic era of the eighties,” he said in a statement.

Sikhs are the most patriotic people and have made the greatest sacrifices for securing and safeguarding the independence, the unity and integrity of India and “we will do so again whenever the country needs it”, he stressed.

“This is our country and the Sikhs need no certificate from anyone on their patriotism,” said Badal after an emergent meeting of senior leaders of the party.

He assured the people of Punjab that the SAD “will fight all forces out to disturb peace and harmony here”. He said SAD is the champion of the rights and a guarantor of peace and “Sarbat da bhala”.

Coming down strongly against the AAP government, Badal strongly condemned the indiscriminate arrests of innocent Sikh youth, especially the Amritdhari youth on mere suspicion through resort to extra-constitutional methods.

He demanded the immediate release of all innocents arrested in the ongoing crackdown.

Badal said SAD stands for justice and for the protection of the rights of the Punjabis in general and the Sikhs in particular within the federal framework, with more powers to the states, a demand echoed now by other political parties too.

  • Congress slams BJP for ‘cooking up’ new history over Tipu’s death

Congress slams BJP for ‘cooking up’ new history over Tipu’s death

    [ad_1]

Belagavi: Karnataka Congress on Monday came down heavily on ruling BJP leaders for “creating new historical characters Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda ” and allegedly propagating that they killed erstwhile Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan.

“This is a distortion of history for elections. This is an insult to the Vokkaliga community,” stated Congress state president D.K. Shivakumar here.

Addressing reporters, he slammed Union Minister for State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shobha Karandlaje, BJP MLA, National General Secretary C.T. Ravi and Minister for Higher Education, IT and BT, Dr C.N. Ashwath Narayan. “These leaders are cooking up new history,” he allleged.

“Characters of Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda are newly created and caste colour is given. They are distorting history which is incorrect. I condemn it. I urge Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji (Vokkaliga pontiff) to take up lead to protest and call for a meeting. He should not allow people to sow the seeds of poison in society,” Shivakumar explained.

The act of writing history in “Whats App university” by BJP should be condemned. The attempts of the saffron party to bring discord in the society should be stopped. In this direction Nirmalandanatha Swamiji should call a meeting, he urged.

Shivakumar further pointed out that the meeting should not be held for compromise. There should be a protest in this regard, he said. “The incidents had taken place 200 years ago. By creation of Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda characters, the Vokkaliga community has been insulted. There should be a case on those who are trying to stir peace,” he demanded.

BJP leaders are maintaining that Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan was not killed by Britishers, but by Vokkaliga soldiers — Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda. The issue has stirred a controversy in the state. There was an attempt to make a movie on Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda, later the announcement was withdrawn.

The BJP is trying to impress the Vokkaliga community ahead of Assembly polls in the state by propagating Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda. However, BJP leaders maintain that everything related to Tipu Sultan is glorified by historians as a part of Muslim appeasement and real history was never told.

BJP slams Jitan Ram Manjhi for remarks on Lord Ram

    [ad_1]

Patna: BJP leaders jumped on the gun to target Bihar’s former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, who marred controversy with his comments that demon king Ravana was superior to Lord Ram.

“These days it has become a fashion to abuse Hindu religion, Hindu religious texts as well Hindu gods and goddesses. It is really condemnable the way RJD leader, Samajwadi Party leader and now Jitan Ram Manjhi is on and off making statements against Hindu gods which hurts the sentiments of common Hindu masses,” said Nikhil Anand, national general secretary of BJP OBC wing.

“They should better check their tongue. If they make a statement against Islam or any other religion, they will be honoured with ‘fatwa’. They are doing it in the name of liberalism, progressivism and to express the sentiment in favour of subalterns and to appease Muslims and their vote bank. In the name of secularism, they should not do anything to hurt the sentiments of Hindu masses. The BJP strongly condemns Manjhi’s statement,” Anand said.

Akhilesh slams Centre for misusing central agencies, to meet Mamata this evening

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday slammed the BJP-led government at the Centre for misusing central agencies to “harass leaders and public representatives of opposition parties”, who pose a threat to the saffron camp.

Yadav, who is in the city to chair his party’s two-day national executive, is scheduled to meet West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee on Friday evening.

“The ED, CBI, and Income Tax are political weapons of the BJP. Here in Bengal, the instances are less. In Uttar Pradesh, several of our (SP) leaders, including MLAs, are in jail in false and fabricated cases,” he told reporters after reaching Kolkata airport.

“The BJP sends the ED and CBI to harass those opposition parties which threaten it,” he said.

Samajwadi Party is holding its two-day national executive in Kolkata from March 18 to discuss policies and strategies for the assembly election in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh later this year and the Lok Sabha poll in 2024, sources in SP said.

Yadav is also scheduled to address the workers meeting at Moulali Yuva Kendra this afternoon.
He will then go to Banerjee’s residence to meet her, the sources said.

The two leaders share a very cordial relationship.

Yadav had lent his party’s support to TMC during the 2021 Bengal assembly poll, which was reciprocated by Banerjee when she campaigned for the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister during the 2022 election in that state.

  • Schumer slams House GOP’s energy permitting bid

Schumer slams House GOP’s energy permitting bid

    [ad_1]

    senate democrats 03876

The bill combines measures to streamline permitting reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act for energy projects and mines, which Republicans hope will form a basis to negotiate with Senate Democrats, with longtime partisan priorities like prohibiting a ban on fracking, mandating oil and gas lease sales and disapproving of President Joe Biden’s decision to kill the Keystone XL pipeline. But these provisions are unlikely to gain traction in the upper chamber given Democratic opposition.

The bill, which is expected to receive a vote on the floor the last week of March, would also repeal major programs in the Inflation Reduction Act such as the $27 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund and the methane tax.

Schumer criticized the GOP’s opening bid on easing the permitting review process, saying it includes “none of the important permitting reforms that would help bring transmission and clean energy online faster.”

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) introduced a permitting proposal last Congress — backed by Schumer and the White House — that was rejected by most Republicans and failed to pass that would have set targets on the length of environmental reviews under NEPA. It also would have granted more authority to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to site transmission lines needed to connect wind and solar generation to far away demand centers.

Despite that failure, House Republicans have insisted they’re serious about negotiating with Democrats on a permitting bill.

While their “all of the above” energy bill is designed to unite the GOP’s fractious conference around combating high oil and gasoline prices, Speaker Kevin McCarthy told POLITICO Tuesday in a statement that he aims to work with Democrats to pass a permitting bill into law once the partisan phase is over.

“It’s no secret that permitting reform is a top priority for House Republicans,” McCarthy said. “I’m pleased to see more Democrats join us in working to address this issue. We’re long overdue in addressing this challenge, and House Republicans will start by passing H.R. 1.”

Schumer, despite his criticism of the GOP’s effort, held out the potential for bipartisan talks.

“I’m glad that there are good-faith talks underway right now between both parties in both houses to figure out what sort of permitting deal is possible,” Schumer said.

  • Karnataka BJP MLA slams party for ‘anti-Muslim’ stance

Karnataka BJP MLA slams party for ‘anti-Muslim’ stance

    [ad_1]

Video of Umanatha Kotian, a BJP MLA from Karnataka, criticising his party’s purported ‘anti-Muslim’ stance went viral online.

Addressing a meeting of Minorities in Kinnigoli village near Mangaluru a few days ago, Kotian, a first-time MLA from Moodbidri, remarked, “Our BJP leaders think that Muslims and Christians will not vote for the party and so they should not work for them. Nobody else will talk about it but me since I am honest. Our party members are conceited. But, I am working against this mentality,” Kotian stated.

He also stated that he has helped numerous mosques, madrasas, and churches in obtaining development financing. “Even recently, I requested the chief minister to donate Rs 5 crore for mosques and churches and he agreed to give Rs 2.5 crore. But, regardless of religion, you should support someone who delivers,” he remarked, according to a report by The New Indian Express.

Furthermore, he said that his district had not witnessed any community violence or hate speech in the previous five years. “Did you hear anything about how a Muslim or a Christian should not work? I make no distinctions. Come to me if you need anything. I’m not asking you to vote. But all I ask is that you vote for those that deliver,” he remarked.

“Forget the party. I’ve done work for you. As a result, I’m asking for a salary, which is my right,” he explained.

While many have welcomed the BJP legislator, certain Hindutva organisations have attacked him for ‘appeasing Muslims’. “The video was chopped and pasted to suit someone’s requirements,” Umanath Kotian stated when asked, the report said. You must watch the entire video. Then you will understand. I did not mean what the viral video depicts,” he remarked.

Kharge slams Modi govt, says those ‘destroying’ democracy are talking of saving it

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday hit back at the government for raising Rahul Gandhi’s democracy remarks in Parliament, saying those “crushing” democracy are talking of saving it.

He also dubbed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “dictator”.

Kharge took out a protest march from Parliament House complex to Vijay Chowk along with MPs of other opposition parties, including those of the BRS, Left parties and AAP, after the BJP launched an offensive against Gandhi for allegedly defaming India by his remarks on democracy and demanded an apology from him.

Gandhi had recently alleged in London that the structures of Indian democracy are under “brutal attack” and there is a full-scale assault on the institutions of the country.

Talking to reporters at Vijay Chowk, Kharge said, “They (BJP) are crushing and destroying democracy and are talking of saving democracy and the country’s pride.”

He charged that there was no rule of law and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was running the country like a “dictator”.

“They are ‘suppressing’ opposition parties through ‘misuse’ of agencies. This is like ‘ulta chor kotwal ko daante’ (pot calling the kettle black),” the Congress chief alleged.

Kharge alleged that PM Modi has “ridiculed” India abroad several times and cited examples of his speeches in China, South Korea, Canada, UAE.

If the prime minister can say all kinds of things against India, why is it a crime if Rahul Gandhi does so, he said.

Kharge alleged that all this is being done by the government to divert attention from the Adani-Hindenburg issue.

“We are demanding a JPC on the Adani issue. The government is trying to divert attention from this…We are together and will continue to demand JPC on the Adani issue,” he said.

The Leader of Opposition also alleged that he was being discriminated against in the Rajya Sabha as the Leader of the House was allowed to speak for 10 minutes and when he rose the House was adjourned after two minutes.

Opposition parties earlier met in the chamber of Leader of Opposition to coordinate their strategy in Parliament.

This is the first day of the second part of the Budget session of Parliament.

Modi slams Rahul Gandhi for remarks on democracy in poll-bound Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Dharwad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday targeted Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on democracy in the country at an international forum and said no power in the world can harm India’s democratic traditions.

Without naming Gandhi and referring to the Congress leader’s remarks made in London — that structures of Indian democracy are under “brutal attack”, Modi termed it an insult to 12th century social reformer Basaveshwara, the people of Karnataka, India’s great traditions and its citizens.

The PM’s statement is being seen with political significance, as Basaveshwara is highly revered in Karnataka, especially by the dominant Lingayat community who form the major vote base of the ruling BJP.

Modi was on his sixth visit this year to Karnataka, where Assembly elections are due by May.

“I have come to the land of Bhagwan Basaveshwar and I’m feeling blessed. Among the contributions of Basaveshwara, most important is the establishment of Anubhava Mantapa, this democratic system is researched across the world, and there are several such things because of which we say India is not just the largest democracy, it is also the mother of democracy,” he said.

Addressing a large gathering after inaugurating the permanent campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad here, he said, he has had the good fortune of unveiling the statue of Basaveshwara in London a few years ago.

“Statue of lord Basaveshwar is in London, but it is unfortunate that in the same London questions were raised on India’s democracy; the roots of India’s democracy have been nurtured by centuries of our history. No power in this world can harm India’s democratic traditions. Despite this some are constantly making it stand in the dock,” Modi said in a veiled swipe at Gandhi.

Such people are insulting Bagawan Basaveshwara, the people of Karnataka, India’s great traditions, country’s 130 crore aware citizens, he further said, adding “people of Karnataka should be cautious about such people.”

Earlier, in a veiled attack on Gandhi over his recent remarks in the UK, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said when India’s dominance on global platforms is growing, some people are criticising the country on foreign land.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi among others were present at the Dharwad event.

Karnataka is the engine of “high tech India”, Modi said. “It is important this engine gets the power of double engine government.”

  • BJP MP Pragya Thakur slams Rahul for remarks in UK, questions his patriotism

BJP MP Pragya Thakur slams Rahul for remarks in UK, questions his patriotism

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: Bharatiya Janata Party Lok Sabha MP Pragya Thakur on Saturday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi must be thrown out of the country for some of his statements made on foreign soil.

Gandhi had, on Monday, told British parliamentarians in London that functioning microphones in the Lok Sabha are often silenced against the Opposition. He made the comment during an event organised by veteran Indian-origin Opposition Labour Party MP Virendra Sharma in the Grand Committee Room within the House of Commons complex.

Thakur, who is Lok Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh capital Bhopal, also claimed Chanakya had said a “son born to a foreign woman can never be a patriot” and that “Rahul Gandhi had “proved” the saying was true.

“We have assumed you are not from India because your mother is from Italy,” Thakur further said.

She was replying to a query on Gandhi’s allegations during an event in the UK that his party colleagues were not being allowed to speak in Parliament.

Hitting back, the BJP MP claimed it was the Congress which was not allowing Parliament to function.

“More work will be done if Parliament functions smoothly. (But) If there is more work, then they (Congress) will not survive. Their (Congress) existence is on the verge of ending. Now their mind is also getting corrupted,” she said.

“You (Rahul Gandhi) are a leader of this country, have been elected by the people (here) and are now insulting the public. While sitting abroad, you (Rahul Gandhi) are saying you are not getting an opportunity to speak in Parliament. Nothing can be more shameful than this. He should not be given a chance in politics and should be thrown out of the country,” Thakur said.

Reacting to her statement, MP Congress media department chairperson KK Mishra said Thakur was an accused in the Malegaon blast case.

Six people were killed and over 100 injured when an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle went off near a mosque in Malegaon, a communally sensitive town in north Maharashtra, on September 29, 2008.

Thakur is out on bail in the case since 2017.

185 Fridays Behind Bars: Anjuman Slams Govt Over Mirwaiz Detention

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid Srinagar on Friday criticized the government for the three and a half years of ‘illegal and arbitrary detention’ of its President Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Molvi Muhammad Umar Farooq who was barred from offering 185th consecutive Friday prayers today.

The Anjuman in a statement said that due to the illegal detention, Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir is prevented from delivering the Friday sermons and Friday prayers from the pulpit of the Jama Masjid which is a direct interference with the religious rights of the Muslims of the valley by the Authorities

The continuous detention of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is a serious concern for Anjuman Auqaf as well as the people, the statement read, adding that public anxiety against his unjustified detention is increasing with each passing day. Severe disappointment is seen among the worshipers at the historic Jama Masjid Srinagar who come from cities and towns to benefit from the wise sermons of Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir, the statement added.

The Anjuman urged the authorities to ensure the unconditional release of Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir on the arrival of the month of Ramadan so that he can fulfill his religious obligations in this blessed month.
