Appalling response to ‘genuine appeal’: Cong slams Jaishankar for accusing Siddaramaiah

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday slammed External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for accusing former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of politicising the issue of Indians stranded in Sudan, saying it was an “appalling response” to a “genuine appeal” for assistance.

The Opposition party lashed out at the Modi government over the issue, saying the problem with most of ministers is that they are so eager to prove their loyalty to “their master and be his voice” that they have forgotten that they are sworn to certain responsibilities.

The issue began with Siddaramaiah posting a series of tweets saying “it is reported that 31 people from Karnataka belonging to Hakki Pikki tribe, are stranded in Sudan which is troubled by civil war” and the government is yet to initiate action to bring them back.

    MS Education Academy

The former Karnataka chief minister urged the prime minister’s office, the union home minister’s office and the ministry of external affairs to “immediately intervene” and ensure the safe return of the Indians.

Siddaramaiah also said the ‘Hakki Pikkis’ in Sudan are left stranded without food since the last few days.

He said the BJP government should immediately open diplomatic discussions and reach out to international agencies to ensure the well-being of Hakki Pikkis.

Jaishankar then came down hard on Siddaramaiah and tweeted, “Simply appalled at your tweet! There are lives at stake; don’t do politics.”

“Since the fighting started on April 14th, the Embassy of India in Khartoum has been continuously in touch with most Indian Nationals and PIOs in Sudan,” Jaishankar tweeted.

“Their details and locations cannot be made public for security reasons. Their movement is constrained by fierce fighting that is ongoing,” he added.

Jaishankar said plans regarding them have to take into account a “very complicated” security scenario and that the Indian embassy in Sudan is in constant touch with the Ministry of External Affairs over the situation in that country.

“It is grossly irresponsible of you to politicise their situation. No electoral goal justifies endangering Indians abroad,” he said.

Assembly elections in Karnataka are due next month.

Hitting back at Jaishankar, Siddaramaiah said, “Since you are the External Affairs Minister @DrSJaishankar I have appealed you for help. If you are busy getting appalled please point us to the person who can help us bring our people back.”

Tagging Jaishankar’s tweet accusing Siddaramaiah of politicising the issue, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh tweeted, “A most appalling response from the External Affairs minister to a former CM with a genuine appeal. This level of nastiness from a man I have known so very well… who has developed new loyalties and who wants to show that in whatever he says and does.”

Ramesh added that he will not say anything on Jaishankar’s past.

Asked about the sharp Twitter exchange between Jaishankar and Siddaramaiah, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said, “I am very shocked at the reaction that came. Our leader Siddaramaiah gave him an apt reply when he said that “if he is done with appalling, he needs to start assisting citizens’.”

The problem with people in this government is that for every little thing they get so riled up, she said.

“He (Siddaramaiah) put out a message seeking the assistance of India’s foreign minister to safely ensure the passage of citizens from Karnataka struck in Sudan, what was so riling about it. The problem with most of these ministers, who are so eager to prove their loyalty to their master and be his voice, is that they have forgotten that they are sworn to certain responsibilities, they are sworn to accountability,” Shrinate said.

“This was nothing about politicising this was about seeking help. You (Jaishankar) may be helpless, you may be good for nothing and that is who you are. You have decided to turn a two-rupee troll, good for you, do all you want to do, ensure the safe passage of citizens back in India,” she said.

Tagging a tweet on the Siddaramaiah-Jaishankar Twitter exchange, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said, “On this issue Dr S Jaishankar’s response surprises me. He knows that public representatives frequently convey to Govt appeals from constituents in distress. He has helped me with several during Covid. Why was Siddaramaiah ji’s request ‘appalling’?”

Sudan has been witnessing deadly fighting between the country’s army and a paramilitary group for the last five days that has reportedly left around 100 people dead.

Meanwhile, government sources said on Wednesday said India is coordinating closely with various countries to ensure the safety and security of Indian nationals in violence-hit Sudan.

“There are military members serving today from Georgia and other places who are less safe because of what this airman did,” Graham said on ABC’s “This Week.” “There is no justification for this, and for any member of Congress to suggest it’s OK to leak classified information because you agree with the cause is terribly irresponsible and puts America in serious danger.”

Teixiera, a member of the Massachusetts National Guard, is accused of uploading dozens of secret documents detailing sensitive intelligence and defense information on the social media website Discord. He was arraigned in a Boston court on Friday, charged with unauthorized retention and transmission of classified national defense information.

The leak is seen as potentially having serious implications for Ukrainians on the battlefield and has frustrated several U.S. allies.

Graham, who was speaking from Israel after wrapping up a trip to Saudi Arabia, said the leak has been “very damaging” in the region.

“There’s information about the air defense capability of the Ukraine and everybody in the region [is] really worried because who wants to share information with the United States if you’re gonna read about it in the paper or find it on the internet? This has done a lot of damage to us in the region,” Graham said.

Cong slams govt over Antigua and Barbuda court’s Choksi ruling

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Sunday attacked the Centre after a court in Antigua and Barbuda reportedly ordered that fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi cannot be removed from the Caribbean country, alleging that this happened due to the government’s “negligence”.

The opposition party also alleged that “repeated negligence” shows that this is being done “intentionally”.

According to media reports, a court in Antigua and Barbuda has ruled in favour of Choksi, wanted in a Rs 13,000-crore scam in the Punjab National Bank, ordering that he cannot be removed from that country.

    MS Education Academy

In a tweet in Hindi, Congress general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh said, “Modi ji’s ‘Mehul Bhai’ has been enjoying abroad for many years with the money looted from our banks. Earlier his red corner notice was cancelled, now this decision of the court has come.”

“All this has happened because of the negligence of the Modi government. It is clear from the repeated negligence that this is being done intentionally,” Ramesh alleged.

The name of fugitive businessman Choksi was removed from the Interpol database of Red Notices on the basis of his plea to the Lyon-headquartered agency.

Red Notice is the highest level of alert by the 195-member strong International Police cooperation organisation Interpol to locate and provisionally arrest a fugitive pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.

Tharoor slams govt over removal of Maulana Azad references from NCERT textbook

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday slammed the government over the removal of references to India’s first education minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in the new NCERT class 11 political science textbook, calling it a “disgrace”.

References to freedom fighter and India’s first education minister Azad have been removed from the new class 11 political science textbook by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

Tagging a media report on it, Tharoor, a former minister of state for human resource development, tweeted, “What a disgrace. I have no objection to adding neglected figures to the historical narrative, but deleting people, especially for the wrong reasons, is unworthy of our diverse democracy and its storied history.”

    MS Education Academy

As part of its “syllabus rationalisation” exercise last year, the NCERT, citing “overlapping” and “irrelevant” as reasons, dropped certain portions from the course including lessons on Gujarat riots, Mughal courts, Emergency, Cold War, Naxalite movement, among others from its textbooks.

The rationalisation note had no mention of any changes in class 11 political science textbook.

The NCERT has, however, claimed that no curriculum trimming has taken place this year and the syllabus was rationalised in June last year.

“Certain changes not finding mention of in the rationalised content book could be an ‘oversight’,” NCERT Director Dinesh Saklani reiterated.

In the class 11 political science textbook’s first chapter, titled ‘Constitution – Why and How’, a line has been revised to omit Azad’s name from the constituent assembly committee meetings.

The revised line now reads, “Usually, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajendra Prasad, Sardar Patel or BR Ambedkar chaired these Committees.”

SC slams Karnataka govt’s call to scrap 4% Muslim quota

    [ad_1]

The Supreme Court slammed the Karnataka government’s decision to scrap the 4% Other Backward Classes (OBC) Muslim quota on Thursday, stating the action is based on “absolutely fallacious assumptions.”

“The Karnataka government’s decision to increase 2% quotas for Vokkaliga and Lingayat each while eliminating the 4% OBC quota for Muslims appears to be shaky and flawed,” the Supreme Court remarked.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the state government, told the Supreme Court that no admission or appointment will be made on the basis of the notification till the next date of hearing on April 18.

    MS Education Academy

Last month, the Karnataka government abolished the 4% OBC reservation for Muslims and reallocated it evenly among the strong Vokkaliga and Lingayat populations. Muslims who qualify for quotas are now classified under the economically weaker sections (EWS).

Dont know Conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar, says Kavitha; slams BJP

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: On conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar’s allegation that there is a nexus between Aam Aadmi Party, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and BRS MLC Kavitha Kalvakuntla, the MLC denied the allegations and said that Sukesh is being used as a ‘ploy’ being used to defame the Telangana government, chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and his family members.

“A financial culprit, who released a nameless letter and BJP MLA Raghunanandan Rao writing a letter to the Election Commission based on it and Nizamabad BJP MP D Arvind, as part of the BJP’s tool kit is using it to defame me on social media,” she wrote in an open letter.

Alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar has made public his alleged WhatsApp chats with jailed AAP leader Satyendar Jain and K. Kavitha, BRS leader and daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao.

    MS Education Academy

Presently lodged at the Mandoli Jail in the national capital, Chandrashekhar is accused of extorting Rs 200 crore from a businessman’s wife.

In the purported conversations released on Wednesday, Chandrashekhar alleges that there is a connection between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and the BRS leader with regard to the Delhi excise policy scam.

In a letter directed to Delhi Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena, Chandrashekhar has accused AAP and Kejriwal of having multiple contracts and business deals with him.

He wrote, “This very application and attached chats expose the link between the Aam Aadmi party, Arvind Kejriwal and BRS leader K. Kavitha, who are involved in the Delhi liquor scam.”

The allegations levelled by Chandrashekhar have raised concerns about the role of political leaders in the liquor policy scam. Further inquiries will likely provide additional insights into the matter.

Chandrashekhar in his letter stated that the very application and chats attached show the nexus between the Aam Aadmi party, Arvind Kejriwal and Kavitha, who are allegedly involved in the Delhi liquor policy scam.

According to Chandrashekhar, the chats submitted to the L-G will aid the ongoing investigation into the liquor scam.

“The said chats are with regard to Rs 15 crore given by me to Arvind kejriwal and Satyendar Jain which was asked to be delivered to K. Kavitha of the BRS in Hyderabad,” said the letter released through his legal counsel Anant Malik.

According to the screenshots of the alleged chats, it is evident that Chandrashekhar had a coded conversation with a person whose number was saved as ‘Kavita Akka TRS’.

In one of the messages, the sender wrote, “AK bro package has to be given. It’s ready with me.”

Chandrashekhar alleged that this package refers to an amount of Rs 15 crore.

In another chat with a mobile number not saved on his phone, and claimed to be of Satyendar Jain, one of the messages read, “Bro Ghee tin ready. Yes bro 15 Kg.”

Chandrashekhar claimed that in their code words, ‘ghee’ refers to money and 15 kg meant Rs 15 crore.

He also wrote “inform big bro” in the same chat, to which the receiver replied, “AK Bhai knows”.

  • Telangana: Uttam slams BRS & BJP govts for ‘neglecting’ farmers’ plight

Telangana: Uttam slams BRS & BJP govts for ‘neglecting’ farmers’ plight

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Nalgonda MP and senior Congress leader N Uttam Kumar Reddy expressed strong concerns about the ‘unfulfilled’ promises made by the BRS government and the BJP-led Central government towards Telangana’s farmers.

He was speaking to media persons after inaugurating the Paddy Procurement Centre of Singaram Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society in the Huzurnagar constituency on Wednesday.

Uttam Kumar Reddy took both governments to task for failing to deliver on assurances such as a Rs 1 lakh loan waiver and a crop insurance scheme for Telangana farmers. He voiced his disappointment over the unpaid Rythu Bandhu dues for farmers with holdings above 10 acres and Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s (KCR) ‘forgotten promise’ of free fertilisers.

    MS Education Academy

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2016 promise to double farmers’ income by 2022 has fallen significantly short of expectations. Not only has the income failed to double, but when taking inflation into account, farmers’ income has actually decreased,” he said.

The Congress MP alleged that the Modi government has further burdened farmers by imposing GST on agricultural equipment and input materials. Additionally, despite falling international crude prices, the price of diesel has increased by over 60%, adding to farmers’ woes, he said.

“Initially, the goal was to increase farmers’ household incomes from an average of Rs 8,050 per month in 2015-16 to Rs 21,146 by 2022. Unfortunately, the country is far from reaching this target, and many farmers claim that farming has become unprofitable in the current situation,” he said.

Uttam Kumar Reddy argued that the BRS government’s inability to waive off crop loans up to Rs. 1 lakh has left most farmers unable to secure fresh loans from banks. He pointed out that, despite knowing from 2014-2018 that crop loan waiver schemes do not benefit farmers if divided into different phases, the BRS government repeated the act, splitting it into six to eight phases. So far, Reddy said, crop loans up to Rs. 35,000 have been waived.

“At this pace, it would take the BRS government another five years to completely waive off the remaining loans,” he added.

The MP added that more than 8,000 farmers have committed suicide since 2014, with fewer than 80 receiving compensation under GO 421. Reddy dismissed the Rythu Bandhu scheme as ‘mere hype’, asserting that the Rs. 5,000 per acre support provided does not genuinely aid farmers.

Uttam Kumar Reddy lambasted both the BRS government in Telangana and the BJP government at the Centre for ‘neglecting’ over one lakh farmers affected by recent unseasonal rains.

“While chief minister KCR announced a compensation of Rs. 10,000 per acre, he contested that the relief package lacked a scientific basis, as it was declared without official teams surveying the damaged areas and providing a final report on crop losses,” he said.

He emphasized that compensation should account for cultivation costs, yield per acre, and income for different crops, such as paddy, maize, and mango. “It has been more than three weeks since rains and floods damaged crops spread over lakhs of acres of land. Where is the report about the enumeration of losses?” he asked.

The MP accused KCR of using the compensation to mask the absence of a crop insurance scheme in Telangana, which would have offered affected farmers a more substantial relief package. He divulged that a majority of affected farmers are still awaiting their Rs 10,000 compensation. He also claimed that the BRS government has not requested compensation from the Centre for the thousands of crores in crop losses suffered by farmers over the past nine years.

Uttam challenged the chief minister to disclose the reports of crop losses submitted to the Centre in the last nine years.

Uttam Kumar Reddy alleged that both BRS and BJP leaders are engaging in the game of allegations and counter-allegations only to keep the people’s attention ‘diverted from their failures’. However, he said that the Congress party would continue to raise the voice of common people under all circumstances.

‘Politics of convenience’: Sibal slams PM Modi’s ‘dynasty’ remarks in Telangana

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Sunday accused the BJP of indulging in “politics of convenience”, as he hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks on dynasty in Telangana and cited past instances of the party aligning with dynastic political families in various states.

Addressing a public meeting in Hyderabad, Prime Minister Modi took a swipe at Bharat Rashtra Samithi chief and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and urged the state government to not allow any hindrance in the works related to the development.

In a tweet, Sibal said, “PM Takes swipe at KCR: Says corruption and dynasty go hand in hand. Why did BJP join: 1) Punjab (Akalis) 2) Andhra (Jagan) 3) Haryana (Chautalas) 4) J&K (Muftis) 5) Maharashtra (Thackerays)…Not dynasties when BJP joined them!”

    MS Education Academy

“It’s called politics of convenience!” the former Union minister said.

In another tweet, Sibal said, “PM: Takes a swipe at KCR, says dynasty and corruption go hand in hand. BJP makes allegations of corruption against AAP.
No dynasty there. Need not be dynasty to allege corruption.”

“You say BJP not dynasty. Is BJP corrupt?” he said.

In his remarks in Telangana, Modi said his government has attacked the real root of corruption of dynastic forces who want to keep their control over every system.

“Should we fight against corruption or not? Should we fight against the corrupt or not? Should the country be liberated from corruption or not? Should legal steps be taken against the corrupt however big or not. Should the law be allowed to work against the corrupt or not,” he asked the gathering.

That’s why “these people” are upset and they are doing anything out of anger, Modi said.

Modi, who said corruption and ‘parivarvaad’ (dynasty) are not different from each other, maintained that every type of corruption begins to grow where there is ‘parivarvaad’.

Modi came to spill poison: BRS slams PM’s claims that Telangana is non-cooperative

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader and state finance minister T Harish Rao said that PM Narendra Modi came to Telangana not to lay the foundation stone for development projects but to spill poison.

Reacting to Modi’s statements about the state’s non-cooperation with Central projects, Harish said “Every word is far from the truth. Playing so many lies as the Prime Minister is worth it to him.”

“It is ridiculous for Modi to say that the state government is not cooperating with the Centre. Actually, the situation is reversed. Centre is not giving any support to Telangana by not sanctioning a tribal university, railway coach factory, Bayyaram steel industry, medical colleges, and nursing colleges,” Harish Rao said.

    MS Education Academy

The minister said that Modi’s ‘Parivarvaad’ claims were to divert people’s attention from the Adani issue.

“Since the formation of Telangana, Aasara pension and Rythu Bandhu has been directly deposited in the beneficiary’s account. It is a big lie to say that Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) started because of him,” said the finance minister.

He said that the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme is a copy of Rythu Bandhu. “It is a shame to claim that farmers benefited for the first time because of the PM Kisan scheme. How much of a help is the scheme compared to Rythu Bandhu?” added Harish Rao.

“Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR) has been moved to Bangalore, an arbitration centre was set up in Gujarat immediately after Telangana did it and farmers were troubled while rice grains were not purchased from Telangana. Is it not your government that has done all this?” Harish Rao asked Modi.

Bhiwani killings: Owaisi slams Haryana CM over lack of progress

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday slammed Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar for the lack of progress in the Bhiwani killings case in which two Muslim men from Rajasthan Junaid and Nasir, were kidnapped, lynched, and charred to death in a car in Haryana’s Bhiwani.

“Haryana CM is more worried about a boy’s election in a London college than he is about Junaid and Nasir being burnt to death in his state. The terrorists who did this had state patronage. It’s been over a month, only one accused has been arrested,” he tweeted, as a response to a video in which the Haryana CM was demanding a probe into the episode of Karan Kataria, a law student studying in UK who was disqualified from running for the general secretary post of the London School of Economics Student Union citing ‘election rule violation’.

A court in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district sent one of the accused, Rinku Saini, to police remand on February 18 in connection with the death of two Muslim men from the state whose charred bodies were found in a car in Haryana after they were allegedly abducted by cow vigilantes.

    MS Education Academy

Station House Office, Gopalgarh, Ramnaresh Meena said no fresh arrest has been made in the case so far.

“The arrested accused Rinku Saini was produced before the court today from where he was sent to five days police remand. The accused will be further interrogated,” the SHO said.

The family members of the deceased had named five men linked to the Bajrang Dal in their complaint to the police.

Saini, 32, a resident of Firozpur Jhirka in Haryana’s Nuh district, was arrested on the basis of interrogation and technical analysis on Friday night.

He works as a taxi diver and was involved with a cow vigilante group, the police said.

The last rites of the two, who were related to each other, were conducted on February 17 after authorities announced a financial aid of Rs 20.5 lakh to each of the affected families.

One of the key accused in the case is Mohit Yadav alias Monu Manesar, the Gurugram district president of Bajrang Dal.

He was earlier named in an attempt to murder case registered at Pataudi police station in Gurugram on February 7.

While on the run, Manu Manesar released a video message claiming his innocence in the Rajasthan case.
