Punjab BJP targets AAP govt over law and order situation

    [ad_1]

Ludhiana: The BJP on Sunday targeted the AAP government over the law and order situation, saying it has “failed” to take action against self-styled Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh and his supporters in the recent Ajnala incident.

“Till today, no action has been taken by the Punjab government against the violators,” said BJP leader Kewal Singh Dhillon here while referring to the Ajnala incident.

Last month, radical preacher Amritpal and his supporters, some of them brandishing swords and guns, broke through barricades and barged into the Ajnala police station on the outskirts of the Amritsar city, clashed with police for the release of one of Amritpal’s aide.

During the incident, six policemen, including a Superintendent of Police rank officer, suffered injuries.

BJP leader Dhillon further said, “The law and order is a state subject and responsibility of its maintenance cannot be shifted upon anyone else.”

He claimed that as a result of “deteriorating” law and order, industrialists of the state are feeling insecure and are contemplating to shift their businesses to other parts of the country.

Punjab BJP general secretary Jeewan Gupta accused the Bhagwant Mann government of not taking any step to boost industry in the state.

Ukraine war: situation in Donbass critical

The Ukrainian General Staff confirmed intensified Russian attacks on the frontline cities in Donbass. In addition to Bakhmut, attacks on Kupyansk, Liman, Avdiivka and Wuhledar in the east of the country were also mentioned in the General Staff situation report on Monday evening. The attacks near Avdiivka, which is close to Donetsk, and near Wuhledar were repelled. The Russian Ministry of Defense had previously reported an increase in the offensive in the Donetsk area with artillery and airstrikes.

Ukraine War: Battles for Bakhmut “Increasingly Complicated”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described the fighting for the city of Bakhmut in the east of the country as “increasingly complicated”. “The enemy is destroying anything that can help hold our positions,” he said Monday in his evening video address. The Ukrainian soldiers who defended Bakhmut against the Russian attackers are “true heroes”.

Russia has been trying for months to bring Bakhmut under its control. The fighting for the city is the longest-running battle to date in the more than year-long Russian war of aggression.

According to analysts, Bakhmut is of little strategic importance – a revenue would therefore have primarily symbolic value for Moscow. Zelenskyy recently announced that the Ukrainian army would try to hold the city for as long as possible. (editorial with agencies)

Consumers | Every third Finn estimates that their financial situation has deteriorated in a year

    [ad_1]

Consumer confidence remained weak in February, although confidence improved.

Consumers confidence in the economy improved in February. Consumers confidence was still very low in February, but the reading rose compared to the level of January and December, says Statistics Finland.

The confidence indicator was -11.9 in February, while January’s figure was -12.7 and December’s -18.5. In February of last year, the indicator got a value of -0.5, which is better than the long-term average.

Expectations for our own economy, and especially for Finland’s economy, are still very weak.

A third of consumers estimate that their own financial situation is worse than a year ago. 22 percent of consumers felt that their finances were at a better level than a year ago.

Consumers according to the timing is very bad for acquisitions. Interest in buying an apartment or a car was less than usual in February. Only nine percent considered the time to be suitable for expensive acquisitions.

Chief Economist of the Savings Bank Group Henna Mikkonen stated in a tweet that the direction is for improvement.

“Of course, there is still a long way to go to the long-term average, so you can’t be terribly happy about this now. But I guess that the bottom has now been seen,” Mikkonen wrote.

Consumers the estimate of inflation at the time of the survey rose to a record level, but the expectation was that inflation would have slowed down a year later. In February, consumers estimated that consumer prices have risen by 8.6 percent since February of last year and will rise by 5.2 percent in the coming year.

Despite the gloomy confidence figures, one’s financial situation was perceived to be good again, and the threat of unemployment was perceived to be at the usual level.

Regionally, confidence rose exceptionally to its strongest in Eastern Finland, where the confidence indicator reading was -3.1. Northern Finland saw the country’s darkest moods and the reading was -17.8.

“Even big changes in the consumer confidence indicator do not always reflect the development of consumption, not to mention smaller short-term fluctuations. The confidence survey provides a lot of interesting information, but one should be careful about the conclusions drawn from it. Imaginations do not always correspond to economic facts, and the real situation does not change as quickly as imaginations”, writes OP Group’s chief economist Reijo Heiskanen on the blog.

Heiskanen estimates that the drop in energy prices and wage increases will ease the economy in the near future. Despite this, the economic situation is not improving quickly.

“As for private consumption, the pace is only slowing down, as the savings accumulated during the corona period will no longer support consumption in the future as before,” Heiskanen writes.

Danish The Bank’s Chief Economist Pasi Kuoppamäki estimates in the release that consumer spending will not fall sharply, even though consumers are postponing many of their purchases.

Kuoppamäki estimates that consumer confidence is still quite stable despite the rise in interest rates and inflation.

According to him, the good employment situation supports stability and the reduction in heating needs reduces the risks related to the price of electricity.

Kuoppamäki tweeted that business confidence is stable, but below the historical average in all main industries.

On the business side trust is EK’s business cycle barometer remained unchanged for the last three months. Confidence in industry fell, but readings improved in construction, service companies and retail trade. Director of EK Sami Pakarinen estimates that the companies are now on a wait-and-see basis.

“It is rarely worth emphasizing individual observations, but in terms of the economic cycle, the following couple of observations are decisive in many ways. Will the positive signals from the economy strengthen and increase confidence, or will confidence begin to decline again?”

According to Pakarinen, the economies of the euro area and Finland have managed with very little damage given the circumstances so far.

“However, it is clear that the growth rate cannot significantly accelerate in the coming months either, because the central bank is tightening its monetary policy to curb inflation. For the next few months, we will be in a swamp there, drift here situation, but we will move forward”, Pakarinen predicts.

  • PM Modi lauds UP govt for state’s law and order situation

PM Modi lauds UP govt for state’s law and order situation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded the Uttar Pradesh government, saying the state is today recognised for its law and order situation as well as development-oriented stance — a far cry from the previous image of the mafia and crushed law and order situation.

He said this while virtually addressing the Uttar Pradesh employment mela.

PM Modi said that the “double engine” government in the state had led “to new opportunities for employment, business and investment”.

In the mela, appointment letters were provided to direct recruits for sub-inspectors in Uttar Pradesh Police and equivalent posts in Nagrik Police, Platoon Commanders and Fire Department Second Officers.

“When you come to this service, you get a ‘Danda’ from the police, but God has given you a heart too. That’s why you have to be sensitive and make the system sensitive,” the Prime Minister told the new recruits.

PM Modi’s comments incidentally come just days after a 46-year-old woman and her 22-year-old daughter were killed during an anti-encroachment drive at Madauli village in Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh.

Subsequently, the police registered an FIR against 39 people, including a sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), lekhpal (revenue officer) and the station house officer of the local police station.

Meanwhile, PM Modi during the occasion, also underlined the training aspect, emphasizing that it will improve sensitivity while modern areas like cyber crimes and forensic science will promote smart policing.

The Prime Minister stressed that new recruits will have the responsibility of both security and giving direction to society.

“You can be a reflection of both service and strength for the people,” Modi said.

Hyderabad: Tension gripped Kalapather in the Old City here on Thursday after Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) workers staged a dharna demanding action against an All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) corporator for preventing them from holding a meeting. Following a complaint, the Kalapather police booked a case against AIMIM corporator under various sections.

The BJP’s local unit was holding a street corner meeting at Mochi Colony under the Kalapather police station limits. On coming to know about it, Ramnaspura corporator Mohd Qader, who is from the AIMIM, along with workers allegedly came and stopped the programme.

  • ‘Extreme situation’: Antarctic sea ice hits record low

‘Extreme situation’: Antarctic sea ice hits record low

    [ad_1]

The area of sea ice around Antarctica has hit a record low, with scientists reporting “never having seen such an extreme situation before”. The ice extent is expected to shrink even further before this year’s summer melting season ends.

The impact of the climate crisis in melting sea ice in the Arctic is clear in the records that stretch back to 1979. Antarctic sea ice varies much more from year to year, which has made it harder to see an effect from global heating.

However, “remarkable” losses of Antarctic sea ice in the last six years indicate that the record levels of heat now in the ocean and related changes in weather patterns may mean that the climate crisis is finally manifesting in the observations.

Scientists were already very concerned about Antarctic ice. Climate models suggested as far back as 2014 that the giant West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), which sits on the continent, was doomed to collapse due to the levels of global heating already seen then.

The increasing loss of sea ice exposes ice sheets and their glaciers to waves that accelerate their disintegration and melting, researchers warned. A recent study estimated that the WAIS would be tipped into gradual collapse – and four metres of sea level rise – with a global temperature rise as low as 1C, a point already passed.

“I have never seen such an extreme, ice-free situation here before,” said Prof Karsten Gohl, from the Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research in the Alfred Wegener Institute, Germany, and who first visited the region in 1994.

Gohl, on board the research vessel Polarstern in Antarctica, said: “The continental shelf, an area the size of Germany, is now completely ice-free. It is troubling to consider how quickly this change has taken place.”

Prof Christian Haas, also at the Helmholtz Centre, said: “The rapid decline in sea ice over the past six years is quite remarkable, since the ice cover hardly changed at all in the 35 years before.”

Scientists at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in the US have also said a new record low has been set. They said Antarctic sea ice extent fell to 1.91m square kilometres on 13 February, below the previous record set on 25 February 2022.

    skip past newsletter promotion

Map of Antarctic sea ice extent

Sea ice melts away in the Antarctic summer before starting to grow again as autumn arrives. “In past years, the annual minimum has occurred between 18 February and 3 March, so further decline is expected,” the NSIDC researchers said. “Much of the Antarctic coast is ice free. Earlier studies have linked low sea ice cover with wave-induced stresses on the floating ice shelves that hem the continent, leading to break up of weaker areas.”

The German scientists said the “intense melting” could be due to unusually high air temperatures to the west and east of the Antarctic peninsula, which were about 1.5C above the long-term average. Furthermore, there have been strong westerly winds, which increase sea ice retreat. The result is “intensified melting of ice shelves, an essential aspect of future global sea-level rise”, the researchers said.

Historical records also show dramatic changes in Antarctica, they said. The Belgian research vessel Belgica was trapped in massive pack ice for more than a year in the Antarctic summer 125 years ago, in exactly the same region where the Polarstern vessel is now sailing in completely ice-free waters.

Prof Carlos Moffat, at the University of Delaware, US, and recently returned from a research cruise in the Southern Ocean, told Inside Climate News: “The extraordinary change we’ve seen this year is dramatic. Even as somebody who’s been looking at these changing systems for a few decades, I was taken aback by what I saw.”

Kashmir Situation ‘Progressively Improving’: Army Commander

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The Army on Tuesday said that the overall situation in Kashmir was “progressively improving”.

Addressing the Northern Command Investiture Ceremony here, General officer Commanding in Chief Lt General Upendra Dwivedi also said that the army was ready to give a befitting response to any Chinese aggression in Ladakh and that Kashmir has witnessed a “concerning rise” in narco-militancy with “Pakistan now using this as a new tool in its proxy war.”

“Northern Command is in a high state of readiness and morale, to face constantly evolving threats and challenges,” news agency GNS quoted General officer Commanding in Chief Lt General Upendra Dwivedi as having said. “The security situation in Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh poses many challenges in terrain and operational dynamics, especially from different adversaries along the Northern and Western Borders,” he said, adding, “We are committed to defending India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while upholding the democratic traditions of the Nation.” He said the army was maintaining a constant vigil, monitoring all developments and “will take all necessary steps to protect our National Interests.”

“Indian Army is prepared to meet any challenges in the future and will always work for the betterment of the people of the Region,” he said, adding, “The last two years have brought to the fore newer challenges in the wake of abrogation of Article 370, the Galwan conflict and multiple waves of COVID-19. These challenges have only served to strengthen our resolve to be steadfast and determined in our commitment.”

He said the situation along the Line of Control has remained stable and the ceasefire understanding with Pakistan continues to sustain. “A very strict vigil and a robust technology enabled multi-tiered counter infiltration grid is being maintained, to thwart any attempts at infiltration,” he said, adding, “ceasefire violations, infiltration bids or any other misadventure attempted by the adversary will be dealt with firmly.” He said numerous infiltration bids have been foiled in the last year. “The highest standards of professionalism and jointness displayed by the troops in all dimensions of Counter (militancy) Operations has nullified/ limited the kinetic threat.”

He said Kashmir has witnessed a concerning rise in narco-militancy “as Pakistan is now using this as a new tool in its proxy war.”

“Of late, a dual strategy of sending across drugs as well as weapons through drones is being employed to keep the fire burning in an attempt to disrupt the social fabric,” he said, adding, “The cross-border smuggling of narcotics provides a succor to (militancy). The Security Forces are alive to this trend and have already initiated counter drone measures to curb the menace.”

He said army’s focus continues to reinforce intelligence setup by synergising with all stakeholders and sister agencies, to usher in peace and undertake developmental activities. “The overall situation is progressively improving and a positive and conducive environment for accelerating the developmental initiatives of the government has been created,” he said, adding, “ The dividends of peace and stability are reaching people in far flung areas and they are participating wholeheartedly to preserve and sustain this peace.”

On the LAC, he said, army’s response to Chinese attempts to “unilaterally change the status quo” was a swift, undaunted and synergised action. “Any adverse aggressive designs or attempts will definitely be met with appropriate posturing of Forces and a strong intent with complete synergy amongst the three services,” he said, adding, “Measures to resolve the LAC situation at diplomatic and operational levels are also simultaneously underway. I assure you that the LAC in Eastern Ladakh is being dominated by physical patrolling and through technical means and our territorial integrity is being ensured”.

Besides the operational challenges on the LAC, line of control and hinterland, he said, army remain committed to providing succor in times of natural disasters such as landslides, COVID and other natural calamities. “I also take this opportunity to laud the efforts of the COVID warriors whose relentless efforts have kept us protected in these testing times,” he said, adding, “Needless to say, that “there is nothing nobler than reaching out and alleviating the lives of people”. On an annual basis, he said, over 250 medical and 100 veterinary camps are conducted in the remotest areas of the UTs, which benefit thousands of lives and livestock. “We are encouraging and facilitating graziers to move to their traditional grazing areas in Eastern Ladakh including those located close to the LAC.”
