  • Punjab Cong chief comes down heavily on AAP govt over Amritpal Singh issue

Punjab Cong chief comes down heavily on AAP govt over Amritpal Singh issue

    [ad_1]

In a statement, he said people’s trust and confidence in the state government was at its lowest ebb ever in history.

“It won’t be any exaggeration that Bhagwant Mann is spearheading the most inept state government in the country which hurtles towards a new embarrassment every new day,” Warring said, adding that the absence of governance in Punjab is a matter of concern for every Punjabi.

He said there are tell tale signs that the state government’s intelligence failed miserably in catching the Khalistan sympathiser even after such ‘meticulous’ planning as is being claimed by the state government.

Notably, the Punjab Police on Wednesday reiterated that they are making all-out efforts to trace Amritpal against whom a lookout circular and a non-bailable warrant had been issued.

“Our efforts are on to arrest him,” he said.

After the police crackdown against elements of ‘Waris Punjab De’ on Saturday, the Khalistan sympathiser switched from Mercedes car to Brezza SUV and later went to a gurdwara in Nangal Ambian village in Jalandhar from where he escaped along with three others on two bikes.

Warring also wrote to Punjab’s Director General of Police, saying he had earlier too written two letters drawing attention to the “growing concern of Punjabis regarding the Amritpal Singh issue and about him getting emboldened with every passing day”.

“I am very sure if you would have cautioned the Punjab government on the urgency of the matter and had the government been serious about the damage he was inflicting on the law and order situation by misguiding the youth of Punjab, the present-day situation could have been avoided.

“..I have always been appreciative of the capabilities of Punjab Police under your able leadership as Director General, but I am dumb struck and aghast at the failure of the Punjab Police.

“I am sure that Amritpal must have been under police surveillance for his anti national activities for quite some time. As per the information in public domain, he is said to have escaped by switching vehicles and changing dresses..,” the letter stated.

Warring mentioned that to allegedly cover up this failure of Punjab Police to nab Amritpal Singh, the police is rounding up a large number of youths who are branded as associates of Waris Punjab De chief.

“No doubt some young boys must have been misguided by his religious sermons, yet I feel that branding them as hardcore anti-national elements will further alienate these young people from mainstream and may push them to become hardliners, which Punjab can ill afford at this juncture.

“We do not support any leniency towards anti-national elements or criminals, but a soft approach is needed to bring these misguided youth back into the mainstream and rehabilitate them,” he added.

Pro-Amritpal Singh rally taken out in Raipur; police serve notice to organisers

    [ad_1]

Raipur: A rally was taken out on Wednesday in Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur by a group of people in support of absconding pro-Khalistan activist Amritpal Singh, leading the police to serve a notice to the organisers of the event which had no prior permission from authorities.

The rally, a foot march which started from Telibandha and comprised a small group of people visibly belonging to the Sikh community, culminated in front of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) office located in nearby Panchsheel Nagar, police said.
The demonstrators also burnt an effigy of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, a senior leader of the AAP, which rules the northern state.

After the police learnt about the rally, which was taken out without prior permission from authorities, a notice was issued to the persons who had organised the event, Raipur Senior Superintendent of Police Prashant Agrawal told PTI.
He did not provide further details.

Talking to the media, a protester, who identified himself as Diler Singh, said Amritpal Singh was innocent and accused the Punjab government and security agencies of falsely implicating him.

Amritpal Singh was fighting against addiction and keeping youth away from it and also uniting them with religion, he said.
Asked about the rally, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel told reporters in Assembly premises that the local administration has been keeping an eye on the issue.

Talking to mediapersons, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Brijmohan Agrawal termed the incident as very unfortunate and said the rally was taken out at a time when the Assembly is in session in the state capital.

The Khalistani separatist, who heads the Waris Punjab De, is on the run since the Punjab police launched a massive manhunt for the outfit’s members. Amritpal Singh was on the radar of the Punjab police after he and his armed followers stormed a police station in Ajnala last month to release one of his aides.

Explainer: The story behind fugitive Amritpal Singh

    [ad_1]

While Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh continues to elude the Punjab police, hundreds are behind bars ever since the crackdown started on March 18.

The National Security Act (NSA) has been imposed on four of his aides – Daljeet Singh Kalsi, Bhagwant Singh, Gurmeet Singh, and ‘Pradhanmantri’ Bajeka. They are currently being lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail, while Amritpal Singh’s uncle Harjit Singh was arrested on Monday.

    Amritpal Singh vs Punjab police

Amritpal Singh came into the national public eye when viral videos surfaced when his followers clashed with officials of Ajnala police station where one of his close aid Lovepreet Singh Toofan was lodged.

They broke the police barricades and attacked with sharp objects while using Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book for the Sikh community, as a shield.

Following a court’s order, Lovepreet Toofan was finally released on February 24. Pictures of him with Amritpal Singh along with other members visiting the Golden Temple in Amritsar were shared on social media platforms.

The sudden meteoric rise of the Khalistani leader, now declared a fugitive by the Punjab Police is as interesting as how he evaded police arrest on Saturday.

    ‘Waris Punjab De’

    Deep Sidhu
    Deep Sidhu

Translated as ‘heirs of Punjab’, the organisation was founded by the late lawyer actor-turned-activist Deep Sidhu on September 30, 2021.

Sidhu described the organisation as one that would protect and fight for the rights of the people of Punjab.

“This is for those who are not satisfied with the social reality of current Punjab. It is a social platform, not a poll gimmick. We are not supporting any political party. Hindu, Muslim, Sikh or Christian, it is for all those who will fight with us for the rights of Punjab. Before 1947, we lived together in harmony, but the British snatched that brotherhood from us. Our Gurus fought against casteism,” Sidhu had said at the launch.

The Punjabi actor, who was arrested in connection with the violence at Red Fort during the 2020-2021 protest against the now-repealed controversial farm laws, died in a road crash near the Delhi border.

    Who is Amritpal Singh

Born in Amritsar’s Jallupur Khera village in 1993, Amritpal Singh is a Dubai returnee hailing from a business family.

He describes himself as a Khalistani and influenced by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who was killed during the Indian Army’s Operation Bluestar in 1984, finally leading to the assassination of India’s then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and ultimately the massacre of Sikhs.

    Amritpal Singhs
Amritpal Singh before his transition as a radical leader

The once metrosexual Amritpal Singh now spots a heavy beard with a blue turban and is escorted by armed men.

Many say he copies Bhindranwale. However, in an interview, Amritpal Singh denied this but confessed he is inspired by him.

“Bhindranwale is my inspiration. I will walk the path shown by him. I want to be like him because that’s what every Sikh wants, but I am not copying him. I am not even equal to dust on his feet,” said Amritpal.

After Sidhu’s death, Amritpal Singh took over the reins. The ‘Dastaar bandi’ ceremony (a formal Sikh baptism) in Bhindranwale’s ancestral village Rode of Moga district was held on September 29 last year.

    full

Amritpal Singh transformed Waris Punjab De’s ideology to an open call for a separate state and urged young Sikhs to take up arms to fight for their rights, dissimilar to Sidhu’s ideology. According to Amritpal Singh, a separate state is the ‘only’ solution for Punjab’s issues mainly drug abuse.

This is not Sidhu’s Waris Punjab De: Family

Deep Sidhu’s family has cautiously distanced themselves from Amritpal Singh and his organisation. According to them, they were unaware of his ascent.

Sidhu’s elder brother Mandeep Singh Sidhu told The Indian Express, “We never met him before. Deep too never met him. He was in touch with Deep over the phone for some time but later Deep blocked him. We do not know how he declared himself as head of my brother’s organisation. He is misusing our name to propagate anti-social activities. He somehow got access to my brother’s social media accounts and started posting on them.”

“My brother made this organisation for a social cause, to raise issues of Punjab and to provide legal aid to the needy, not to propagate Khalistan. Amritpal is talking about creating unrest in Punjab. He is befooling people using my brother’s and Khalistan’s name. My brother was not a separatist,” Mandeep was quoted by Indian Express.

Perpetrators of terrorism finally consumed by terrorism itself: Jitendra Singh

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Union minister Jitendra Singh on Wednesday said perpetrators of terrorism are ultimately “consumed” by terrorism itself.

Singh said hailing from a terror affected region, he has been witness to terrorism in all its ramifications and can say with certain amount of confidence that the perpetrator of terror rides the tiger and is finally consumed by the same tiger, according to a Personnel Ministry statement.

Singh is a Lok Sabha member from Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur constituency.

Speaking at ‘Basanti Chola Diwas’ to pay homage to Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev here, the Union minister of state for personnel said the British reign of terror had come to an end as the internal contradictions forced the ‘Raj’ to finally wind up from India.

Paying glowing tributes to Bhagat Singh, a day ahead of Shaheed Diwas’ to mark the death anniversary of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, the revolutionary leaders who were hanged at the Lahore Central Jail in Lahore on March 23, 1931, Singh said, the revolutionary zeal of Bhagat Singh shook the British empire and only 16-17 years later the British were forced to quit India in 1947.

He said Bhagat Singh was the first Human Rights Activist of the 20th Century, much ahead of when the concept of Human Rights came into existence, the statement said.

Singh said apart from a martyr and freedom fighter, Bhagat Singh was a great thinker and philosopher and there was amalgamation of both Gandhi and Karl Marx in his writings and thoughts.

The minister also lauded the social work of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal, also known as SBS Foundation, and underlined that during the Covid pandemic, SBS was the only visible organisation working on ground.

Founded by Padma Shri Awardee Jitender Singh Shunty, since 1995, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal has been extending emergency services to people in Delhi-NCR, specifically for the management of funeral vans for ferrying dead bodies to cremation/burial grounds, for cremation of underprivileged, unclaimed and abandoned bodies, and organising voluntary blood donation camps, among other such services, the statement said.

The Sewa Dal has transported and cremated more than 4,500 Covid positive bodies, that were unclaimed or where the families were quarantined or under deep fear and could not perform cremation, it added.

Lookout circular, non-bailable warrant issued against Amritpal Singh

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: Punjab Police issued a lookout circular (LOC) and non-bailable warrant (NBW) against ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh, the fugitive Khalistani sympathiser.

Addressing a press conference, Inspector General of Police (Headquarters), Punjab Sukhchain Singh Gill said that Amritpal Singh, a Khalistani sympathiser, has not been arrested yet.

“We are making all efforts to arrest him. We’re hopeful that we’ll arrest him soon…It is difficult to say that. Punjab Police is receiving full cooperation from other states and central agencies,” the IGP said.

“A lookout circular (LOC) and non-bailable warrant (NBW) have been issued against Amritpal Singh, who remains a fugitive and efforts are being made to arrest him,” said the Information and Public Relations Department Punjab government.

As part of its efforts to arrest Amritpal Singh, Punjab Police released his pictures on Tuesday.

IGP Gill requested people to help them in Amritpal’s arrest.

“There are several pictures of Amritpal Singh in different attires. We are releasing all of these pictures. I request you display them so that people can help us to arrest him in this case,” said Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sukhchain Singh Gill.

One of the pictures shows Amritpal Singh as clean-shaven.

According to a preliminary probe, police said he visited a Gurdwara in Jalandhar district while on the run and escaped on a motorcycle after changing clothes.

According to CCTV visuals, Amritpal Singh was seen escaping in an SUV in Jalandhar on March 18. He is still on the run.

He was asked if Amritpal Singh had fled to any other state.

“In the preliminary investigation, it was found that they went to Gurdwara Sahib in Nangal Ambian where Amritpal changed his clothes and they escaped on two motorcycles. Teams are working, further investigation is underway,” the senior police official told ANI.

He said a total of 154 people have been arrested and taken into custody so far.

“Around 12 weapons, including rifles and revolver, recovered”.

A local villager in Jalandhar said they got know on Tuesday that Amritpal Singh and his accomplices came to the village on March 18.

“We got to know today morning when the police came that Amritpal along with his associates was here in the village on March 18. He changed clothes at local gurudwara, had food and then went away on motorcycle. Babaji who’s being questioned by police now had admitted that Amritpal came here,” the villager said.

Locals of the Jalandhar village claimed Amritpal Singh’s presence in their village on March 18. A CCTV video has emerged sourced from the local villagers. Punjab police have not officially confirmed this.

The video shows a car and men waiting on a bike near a field. Another bike is parked nearby and as the first bike moves with three riders, the other also readies to leave.

Police have recovered the car in which ‘Waris Punjab De’ leader Amritpal Singh fled.

Gill said that they have arrested four people who helped the fugitive pro-Khalistani leader. He said weapons from recovered from the vehicle in which Amritpal Singh was travelling.

“We have arrested four more people in this case – Manpreet, Gurdeep, Harpreet, and Gurpej. These four people had helped Amritpal Singh escape in a Brezza vehicle from the Naka point. We recovered the vehicle, one rifle, and other equipment. Arms Act has been invoked,” he said.

Gill said the four have been arrested under the Arms Act.

Arms Act has been invoked against the four people who helped him. An important fact has come to light that Amritpal Singh, after fleeing, visited the Gurudwara in Nangal Ambian village (in Jalandhar district) and changed his clothes before fleeing again. This came to be known in the questioning of the four people who have been nabbed,” Gill said at the press conference.

He said National Security Act (NSA) has been invoked against Amritpal Singh.

“A non-bailable warrant has been issued against him on March 18. Police are working as per law. People have suspicions, but the prime accused (Amritpal Singh) has not been arrested yet. As soon as the arrest is made, we will inform you,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the Punjab government told the Punjab and Haryana high court that the National Security Act (NSA) has been invoked against Amritpal Singh.

Punjab Advocate General Vinod Ghai told the High Court in a hearing that a search for the Waris Punjab De leader is on.

“We were armed but we refrained from using force. Some matters are so sensitive, that can’t be explained in court. We are doing a good job in action against Amritpal. NSA has been imposed on him,” the AG told the court.

Amritpal’s lawyer told the court that Amritpal Singh’s father Tarsem Singh was present in court. To this, the court said that since Singh’s father was not a party before it he cannot be heard and if he wanted to submit something, he should file an application.

The court was adjourned till the next hearing slated after four days. It also sought a fresh affidavit from the government.

Punjab Police on Saturday launched an operation against Amritpal Singh and his aides.

The police said that a total of 114 arrests have been made in the case so far, and there is a strong suspicion of ISI angle and foreign funding.

  • NSA invoked against Amritpal Singh, Punjab govt tells HC

NSA invoked against Amritpal Singh, Punjab govt tells HC

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: The stringent National Security Act has been invoked against Amritpal Singh, the Punjab government on Tuesday told the high court which rapped it over the “intelligence failure” that led to the pro-Khalistan preacher giving police the slip.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court was hearing the habeas corpus petition filed by advocate Imaan Singh Khara, seeking the “release” of Amritpal Singh from alleged police custody.

Justice N S Shekhawat asked Punjab Advocate General Vinod Ghai how Amritpal Singh gave police the slip when the whole operation was meticulously planned and called it an intelligence failure, a lawyer said.

Police on Saturday had launched a major crackdown against Amritpal Singh and members of his outfit ‘Waris Punjab De.’ The elusive preacher himself, however, gave the police a slip and escaped their dragnet when his cavalcade was intercepted in the Jalandhar district.

In his petition, Khara sought the production of Amritpal Singh from alleged police custody. Khara is the legal advisor of Amritpal Singh and his outfit ‘Waris Punjab De.’

The Punjab Police say the Khalistan sympathizer is still on the run after escaping their dragnet.

Speaking to reporters after the court hearing, Khara said the Punjab advocate general filed its record pertaining to Amritpal Singh in the high court.

Khara said Ghai told the court that five to six FIRs have been registered in the matter. The petitioner further said that the AG told the court that NSA has been invoked against Amritpal Singh.

The step was taken after the senior superintendent of police Amritsar recommended it to the district magistrate. However, according to the reply filed by the state, Amritpal Singh has not been detained by police, said Khara.

Armed with weapons, the entire state machinery swung into action yet Amritpal Singh managed to escape while all his associates were arrested, Justice Shekhawat observed and said it was hard for him to believe this.

Replying to the court queries, the Punjab AG said the state police was fully armed but exercised restraint due to security issues as the operation occurred at a public place.

Some matters are so sensitive that they cannot be explained in open court, Ghai said, adding that the Punjab Police was doing its best to arrest Amritpal Singh.

Meanwhile, Amritpal Singh’s father Tarsem Singh also reached the court but Justice Shekhawat stated that he cannot be heard as he is not a party in the case.

The HC appointed advocate Tanu Bedi as amicus curiae to assist the court.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali says NO to work with Ranveer Singh, why?

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: From Devdas to Bajirao Mastani, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has directed various hit movies which are still the all-time favourites of most Indians. SLB’s movies have a great message and usually rock at the box office. He is one of the successful directors of Hindi cinema.

Bhansali was admired for his recent film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ everywhere and it was reported that he is planning to direct the remake of the 1952 film ‘Baiju Bawra’. The director, according to latest rumours has now dropped the idea of going ahead with the remake of Meena Kumari’s classic ‘Baiju Bawra’ in which Ranveer Singh was all set to play the role.

Rumours mills suggest that SLB is planning to work with Shah Rukh Khan on a new project or he will make ‘Inshallah’ with Salman Khan. As Ranveer Singh’s latest film proved to be a disaster at the box office, SLB might be thinking of bringing the actor on board for his next project. Now, speculations are rife that either Salman or SRK will be seen in the renowned director’s next venture.

A report in ETimes also suggests that the remake of ‘Baiju Bawra’ needed a lot of finance which was not viable for any producer or studio to back it at this point of time when Bollywood is in a state of transition and crisis both.

On the professional front, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is currently gearing up for the release of his OTT debut series Heeramandi on Netflix.
