MP: Cong takes out silent march to protest vandalisation of its Jabalpur office

Jabalpur: Congress leaders on Sunday took out a silent march in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur to protest the vandalisation of their city office. The party has blamed Bajrang Dal for the vandalism.

The Congress has been facing backlash from BJP and right-wing outfits for bracketing Bajrang Dal with the Popular Front of India (PFI) in its manifesto for the May 10 Karnataka polls.

The party leaders started from Shahid Smarak and ended their protest at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Town Hall, said a Congress functionary.

“Congressmen are Gandhians. We are not going to storm their office. We are going to do a peaceful protest till 200-odd Bajrang Dal men, some of them history-sheeters, are not arrested,” mayor and city Congress president Jagat Bahadur Singh told PTI.

The Congress has also demanded action against two inspectors from Kotwali and Lordganj police stations. These inspectors were deputed at the “Bajrang Dal’s protest site but were conspicuous by their absence”, Singh said.

After the Congress’ office in the Baldeo Bagh area was vandalised on Thursday, the Bajrang Dal had claimed that it was involved in the act.

Two days ago, police said that they had arrested 10 persons, including prime accused Sumit Singh Thakur who is the “vibhag prachar pramukh” of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). Bajrang Dal is the youth wing of the VHP.

Earlier, a police official had said that they had booked 25 people on the basis of video footage and a complaint for rampaging through the Congress city office.

Additional Superintendent of Police Priyanka Shukla could not be reached contacted despite repeated attempts to know how many people have been arrested till date.

The protesting Congress workers included Rajya Sabha member Vivek Tankha and MLAs Tarun Bhanot, Sanjay Yadav, and Lakhan Gangoria.

  • Why is PM Modi silent when his party people abuse me: Uddhav Thackeray

Why is PM Modi silent when his party people abuse me: Uddhav Thackeray

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray on Monday asked why PM Narendra Modi is silent on the abuse hurled against him and his family members.

“Modi said Congress abused him 91 times. But why are you silent when your people abuse me and my family,” Thackeray said, addressing the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi rally in Mumbai.

“Their abusive language shows their culture,” he said. “I am asking the RSS: do you accept such an offspring (BJP),” he added.

    MS Education Academy

Thackeray referred to the criticism he has faced for aligning with Congress and NCP.

“When I go with Congress and NCP, they (BJP) claim that I have forsaken Hindutva. If that is the case, then what about (RSS chief) Mohan Bhagwat’s visit to a mosque,” he said.

Thackeray said he will visit Barsu, the site of the proposed refinery in Ratnagiri district, on May 6. “I will go there and talk to the locals. How can you stop me? This is not POK,” he said.

“Yes, I suggested the site for the refinery when I was the CM, but my letter (to Modi) did not specify that police should fire on protesters,” he said.

Slamming the government for shifting mega projects from Maharashtra, Thackeray said, “we will make pieces of anyone who tries to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra.”

Thackeray also flayed the Modi government for targeting opposition leaders by using agencies like ED and CBI.

“If you have guts, send ED to the house the Chinese president, whose country has encroached upon a huge area of India,” he said.

On a sarcastic note, he suggested that industrialist Gautam Adani’s life story must be part of school curriculum so that people of India can learn how to become rich like him.

  • Why is PM Modi silent on Satya Pal Malik’s revelations, questions MVA

Why is PM Modi silent on Satya Pal Malik’s revelations, questions MVA

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party should come clear on the statements made by former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik on various issues, including the Pulwama attacks, here on Saturday.

Terming Malik’s contentions on corruption, farmers and February 2019 Pulwama strikes as ‘grave’ and directly linked with national security, the Congress state president Nana Patole, Nationalist Congress Party Chief Spokesperson Mahesh Tapase and Shiv Sena (UBT) National Spokesperson Kishore Tiwari have said they must be probed thoroughly.

“Many questions are raised in Malik’s allegations that Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked him to keep silent when the government’s fault was pointed out in the Pulwama attacks that led to the killing of 40 soldiers,” said Patole.

    MS Education Academy

He said doubts are created in public minds if this is true and why the demand to send airplanes for the jawans was rejected, where did the 300 kg RDX used came from and other glaring lapses that pointed a finger at the Modi government.

Tapase said that Malik’s statements are too ‘serious’ to be brushed aside and the PM must clarify as it owes an explanation to the nation and the families of the martyred soldiers.

Tiwari pointed out that Malik’s explosive revelations pointed fingers at the PM, the Home Ministry and Defence Ministry and could have possible ‘national security ramifications’.

“What Malik has exposed may be like the tip of the iceberg. What exactly is underneath that has not yet come to light, what does it portend for the country’s internal and external security, and why it has been kept suppressed for over 4 years,” Tiwari asked, saying this needs an independent investigation.

Referring to Malik’s allegations that RSS leader Ram Madhav had offered him a bribe of Rs 300 crore, the Congress leader said this is coming from a former governor appointed by Modi and BJP who claim that they will not spare any corrupt person. “But now, they are themselves completely silent on this.”

“All these statements made openly by a senior BJP leader deepen the suspicions on the government and so it is up to PM Modi himself to disclose the true facts in this matter,” urged Patole.

Tiwari warned that if the BJP attempts to bury Malik’s allegations under the carpet, then it will be deemed as not only true but tantamount to a deliberate fraud played on the people, the farmers and the soldiers of the country who lay their lives for the nation.

Why is PM Modi ‘silent’: Kapil Sibal on Bengal, Bihar communal violence

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In the wake of communal violence in West Bengal and Bihar, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Sunday questioned the “silence” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the matter, and said “let not 2024 general elections be the reason” for the violence.

Sibal appealed to the people of the country to put a stop to the “burning of Bengal and Bihar, and to the seeds of hatred” which, he said, can only benefit politicians and political ideologies.

The ordinary man becomes a victim of this hatred, he said in a statement.

    MS Education Academy

“I want the prime minister (Modi) to speak up, I want the home minister (Shah) to speak up and condemn the violence. It is unfortunate that in the midst of this violence neither of them have spoken, why are they quiet,” he asked.

“It is my earnest appeal to all those, and it may not be about one particular party, who are responsible for this madness. The country needs to move forward away from the environment that is being created. Let not 2024 be the reason for this,” the former Union minister said.

Sibal said let the rule of law prevail.

Sources said Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday expressed concern over incidents of communal violence in Bihar, and spoke to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to take stock of the situation.

Sibal said it was not enough to express concern.

His statement comes after communal violence rocked Sasaram and Bihar Sharif towns during Ram Navami festivities.

The police till Saturday arrested 45 people in connection with the communal violence at Sasaram and Bihar Sharif.

Vehicles, houses and shops were torched and several people injured in the communal flare-ups reported in both towns.

Howrah’s Shibpur and Kazipara area in West Bengal had also witnessed clashes during a Ram Navami procession.

Sibal, who was a Union minister during the UPA 1 and 2 regimes, quit the Congress in May last year and was elected to the Rajya Sabha as an independent member with the Samajwadi Party’s support. He recently floated a non-electoral platform ‘Insaaf’ aimed at fighting injustice.

  • BJP wants to avoid Adani questions, PM silent on him: Priyanka Gandhi

BJP wants to avoid Adani questions, PM silent on him: Priyanka Gandhi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday launched a fresh attack on the BJP over her brother and Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha, saying the move was a ploy by the ruling party to evade questions on the Adani issue in Parliament.

Taking to Twitter, Priyanka Gandhi posted, “BJP wants to avoid this (Adani) question. The entire Parliament, barring the Opposition, is silent and the Prime Minister himself has turned mute.”

“They (BJP) are levelling all kinds of charges on Rahul. However, the PM remains silent on whose money was invested in shell companies owned by Gautam Adani and why isn’t it being investigated,” Priyanka wrote.

Tagging a photograph of her brother to her post, Priyanka highlighted three key statements of Rahul during a press conference on his disqualification on Saturday.

In the first of these three statements, Rahul said, “Prime Minister was scared of my next speech that was to come on Adani. I saw it in his eyes.”

“The moot question remains: who invested Rs 20,000 crore in the Adani shell firms? I will keep raising this question,” the former Wayanad MP said, in another statement that her sister highlighted.

In the third statement that Priyanka tagged to her post, Rahul refused to tender an apology for the remark for which he was convicted and eventually disqualified from the Lower House, saying, “My name is not Savarkar, my name is Gandhi. Gandhis don’t apologise to anyone.”

Rahul claimed that he was not scared of going to prison, adding his disqualification was aimed merely at diverting public attention from the controversy over the report by US-based short-seller Hindenburg Research against the Adani Group.

He alleged that the BJP-led central government was protecting the billionaire investor, who was accused of stock manipulation by the US short-seller.

“Why is the BJP protecting Gautam Adani? Kyun ki aap hi Adani ho,” Rahul alleged.

He added, “The whole game of disqualification and allegations (against him) by ministers is aimed at distracting people from the Adani issue.”

‘Silent’ meeting between Mamata, Kumaraswamy in Kolkata sparks political speculations

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: On the day Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the membership of Lok Sabha, a “silent” meeting between the Janata Dal-Secular leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the latter’s residence here on Friday sparked off speculations about fresh equations in the sphere of opposition politics at the national level.

The meeting was as brief, lasting just 30 minutes, and neither Banerjee or Kumaraswamy made any comment on the proceedings.

However, Trinamool Congress insiders aware of the proceedings of the meeting claimed that Kumaraswamy invited the West Bengal Chief Minister to come to Karnataka and campaign against the BJP for the forthcoming Assembly elections in the southern Indian state.

“The two leaders have discussed how the regional parties can unite before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and build a formidable united opposition nationally throughout the country,” said a senior member of the West Bengal cabinet on strict condition of anonymity.

Earlier in the day after arriving at Kolkata, Kumaraswamy decried the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as a member of the Lok Sabha and said that this development was reflection of the vindictive politics pursued by BJP.

This the third regional party leader of national relevance that Banerjee had separate meetings with since last week. Last week, when the Samajwadi Party chief and Leader of Opposition in Uttar Pradesh assembly, Akhilesh Yadav came to Kolkata to attend the national council meeting of his party and called on Banerjee at her residence.

On Thursday, Banerjee had a similar one-on-one meeting with the Biju Janata Dal chief and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the latter’s residence in Bhubaneswar.

Political observers feel that these meetings are crucial in the sense that Banerjee is trying hard to have an united alliance against BJP before the Lok Sabha polls but keeping Congress out of that alliance plan. The Trinamool has officially made its stand clear of maintaining a distance with Congress on this count.

  • PDP will not remain silent about BJP’s onslaught on opposition parties: Mehbooba Mufti

PDP will not remain silent about BJP’s onslaught on opposition parties: Mehbooba Mufti

    [ad_1]

Poonch: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Monday said his party would not remain silent about the alleged onslaught of the BJP on the opposition parties in pursuit of its goal of “making India a BJP Rashtra”.

The former chief minister said the gloomy faces of the people speaks about the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, where thousands of youths have been jailed and an atmosphere of fear has been created.

“I want to ask all political parties in the country to wake up as what happened to J&K (after 2019) is finally reaching their necks.

You preferred to remain silent or speak in a half-hearted manner but we will not remain silent and will fight not only for ourselves but for you as well,” Mehbooba said addressing a public meeting in the border district of Poonch.

The PDP leader, who is currently on a three-day tour of Pir Panjal region, said she was warning that BJP has turned J&K into a laboratory to experiment its policies before their implementation in other parts of the country.

“The opposition parties in the country did not understand what was happening to us. Today when the BJP is trampling democracy by jailing opposition leaders with the help of the Enforcement Directorate and CBI, they have started feeling the heat,” she later told reporters.

She said the abrogation of Article 370 was unconstitutional but majority of the leaders stayed silent. “I am of firm belief that we will get back Article 370 with interest. They will come and ask what else you want.”

Referring to the slapping of Public Safety Act (PSA) on political leaders including her and two other former chief ministers, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba said J&K was turned into a jail and an atmosphere of fear was created to silence the people.

Mehbooba said they are not in favour of making India a “Hindu Rashtra” but their policies are aimed at making it a “BJP Rashtra” where everyone who aligns with them will be welcomed.

She also opposed the property tax and hiring of a previously black listed company by the J-K administration to fill vacancies in different government departments and said the youth are the worst sufferers of the policies of the administration.

The PDP chief said from Lt Governor to bureaucrats, everyone has been brought from outside and they (BJP) are claiming to install a chief minister from Jammu.

“Had they been serious, they would have installed a Lt Governor from Jammu or at least one of his advisors but they only believe in hoodwinking the public to get votes,” she said.

Hyderabad: Police disrupt YS Sharmila’s ‘silent protest’, detained

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The City police on Wednesday disrupted the ‘silent protest’ held by YSRTP chief YS Sharmila and her fellow party workers at Tank Bund.

YS Sharmila held the protest at the Rani Rudrama Devi statue located on the Tankbund road to commemorate International Women’s Day by wearing a mask on her mouth.

Speaking to the media she said: “The state has turned into a fill of land mines for women, planted in the form of crimes and atrocities. One never knows when they explode. For KCR only his daughter represents women and she has put the women to shame and disgrace by being caught in liquor scam,” she said.

They detained her immediately and moved YS Sharmila to her residence in Lotus Pond.

The YSRTP chief alleged that the ruling BRS leaders are engaged in crimes against women.

“KTR’s constituency witnessed rapes against minors. Hyderabad sees rapes in broad daylight. Dalit women are assaulted, killed in lockups but KCR won’t say a word. His assurances for women are fake. Where is the Bharosa app as flaunted by KTR? I checked myself and it’s defunct,” she said.

“Even the Governor was not spared and foul language on her by an MLC made way for his MLA seat,” she further remarked.

Congress Silent On Art 370, Wants Early Statehood and 6th Schedule to Ladakh

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Kashmir did figure in the just concluded 3-day All India Congress Committee (AICC) plenary session in Raipur. The resolution offered clear ideas about its Kashmir policy, apparently vindicating what was already around.

    Rahul Gandhi e1677428411766
Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka in Kheer Bhawani temple in Ganderbal after the Bharat Jodo Yatra was formally over on January 31, 2023.

There were two mentions of Kashmir. One in Rahul Gandhi’s speech after the session was over and another in the party’s resolution.

“52 years past and I still don’t have home, but when reached Kashmir felt like home,” Rahul Gandhi said. He concluded his yatra in Srinagar and made a speech amid a snowfall. Later he spent many days in Gulmarg to cool his heels. “Yatra was to make people of all castes and age groups feel at home. People were not talking about political things to me during yatra but it all changed when I reached Kashmir (sic).”

Gandhi’s Kashmir links apart, the grand old party is not interested in reinstating Article 370 or retaining encouraging Ladakh to rejoin Jammu and Kashmir. It wants early restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and protect Ladakh culture by the extension of the Sixth Schedule.

“The people of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh have always stood by the country and its sovereignty. Congress reaffirms that the whole of Jammu & Kashmir is part of India. Owing to the drastic steps taken in August 2019, the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir has been bifurcated summarily,” the draft resolution read. “Congress will strive to restore complete statehood for the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, and bring Ladakh and its people under the protection of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India.”

Gandhi in Srinagar had also asserted that his party would want early elections in Jammu and Kashmir and restoration of the statehood. He avoided Article 370.

Interestingly, Home Minister Amit Shah asserted on the floor of the house on the day he read down the special status of Jammu and Kashmir that statehood will be restored and elections will be held. However, he offered no deadline for either of the two commitments.

Congress’s silence on the special status of Jammu and Kashmir indicated that the party will avoid raking an issue that will cost it in elections. A section within Congress is not opposed to the August 5, 201decision-makingng though they insist the way it was done could have been avoided.
