Temperature Continues To Hover Far Below Normal
Srinagar, May 8 (GNS): Rains continue to lash Jammu and Kashmir even as the weather department forecast more precipitation in next 24 hours before “significant” improvement from May 9.
“Today is going to be rainy, cloudy and cold in J&K. A significant improvement is very likely from May 9,” a meteorological department official here told GNS.
However he said while “mainly clear weather” was expected on May 9 but rain/thunderstorm in the late afternoon or evening can’t be ruled out at some places.”
From May 10-15, he said weather was expected to be “mainly dry” along with a rise in temperature. “Expect warmer days,” he said.
The MeT department reiterated advisory to farmers to postpone spraying of orchards and harvesting of crops till May 8.
Tourists have been also advised to keep warm clothes and eatables ready as weather.
He said in the last 24 hours till 0830 hours, Srinagar received 1.6mm of rainfall, Qazigund 49.8mm, Pahalgam 15.1mm, Kupwara 8.2mm, Kukernag 62.2mm, Gulmarg 10.8mm, Jammu 2.7mm, Banihal 40.2mm, Batote 20.3mmKatra 6.4mm, and Bhaderwah 9.0mm.

Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 6.7°C against 6.5°C on the previous night and it was 4.0°C above normal for the summer capital.
Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 4.0°C against 5.2°C on the previous night and it was below normal by 5.2°C for the gateway town of Kashmir.
Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 2.6°C against 2.1°C on previous night and it was 2.9°C below normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Kokernag recorded a low of 2.2°C against 4.2°C on the previous night and it was 7.0°C below normal for the place, the officials said.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 0.4°C against 0.4°C on previous night and it was 5.6°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.
In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 5.2°C against 6.3°C as on the previous night and it was 4.1°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.
Jammu recorded a low of 16.3°C against 16.1°C on the previous night and it was 6.7°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.
Banihal recorded a low of 5.7°C (below normal by 5.2°C), Batote 6.2°C (6.6°C below normal), Katra 12.8°C (6.9°C below normal) and Bhaderwah 6.4°C (below normal by 3.2°C). Ladakh’s Leh recorded a low of 1.1°C, he added. (GNS)

MeT Forecast ‘Significant’ Decrease In Rainfall After Downpour

Srinagar, April 19 (GNS): Rains continued to lash Jammu and Kashmir even as the weather department here on Wednesday predicted intermittent rainfall to continue till April 21.
A meteorological department official here told GNS that intermittent light to moderate rain was likely to continue at most places of Kashmir and at scattered places of Jammu. However, he said, a significant decrease in rainfall was expected from this evening.
From April 22nd-29^th, he said, the weather is expected to be dry weather with occasional cloudiness.
Regarding rainfall in last 48 hours till 0830 hours today, Anantnag received 31mm, Kulgam 15mm, Pulwama 29mm Shopian 35mm, Qazigund 50mm, Pahalgam 63.4mm, Kokernag 37.8mm, Srinagar 22.9mm, Gulmarg 51.7mm, Banihal 66.4mm, Batote 29mm, Udhampur 15.8mm, Jammu 17.1mm, Katra 22.2mm, and Kathua 3.4mm.
Regarding temperature, the official said that Srinagar recorded a low of 10.3°C against 11.0°C on the previous night and it was 2.4°C below normal for the summer capital.
Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 9.2°C against 9.8°C on the previous night and it was 2.7°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.
Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 5.4°C against 5.6°C on the previous night and it was 2.0°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Kokernag recorded a low of 8.3°C against 9.3°C on the previous night and it was 1.8°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 2.0°C against 3.6°C on the previous night and it was 0.3°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.
In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 7.1°C against 8.6°C on the previous night and it was 0.3°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.
Jammu recorded a low of 17.4°C against 20.0°C on the previous night. It was 2.5°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.
Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 10.2°C (above normal by 1.8°C), Batote 10.1°C (below normal by 1.3°C), Katra 16.0°C (1.1°C below normal) and Bhadarwah 11.9°C (4.7°C above normal). Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of 1.6°C and 3.3°C respectively, he said. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, in this month’s “Awaam ki Awaaz” programme shared the inspiring stories of the Change-makers and highlighted the efforts of the UT Government to realize the true growth potential of Jammu Kashmir.
The Lt Governor said the JK administration with citizens’ participation is steering the change in the socio-economic landscape of the Union Territory. Our collective effort is to create a more progressive, growth-oriented and aspirational society and laying a strong foundation for journey of the next 25 years, he added.
“Kashmir division is witnessing ‘Yellow Revolution’ with oilseed crops registering significant growth. There will be additional opportunities for oil extraction and value addition and therefore more entrepreneurial opportunities for people,” said the Lt Governor.
According to an estimate, mustard oil worth Rs 800 crore will be produced this year only in the Kashmir Valley and Jammu and Kashmir will move towards self-sufficiency in the production of the mustard oil, he noted.
Congratulating people of Jammu Kashmir for GI-Tagging of the Basholi Painting, he said it is a significant landmark in preserving and promoting the artistic and cultural heritage of J&K UT.
“Basohli Painting has become the first independent GI-tagged product from Jammu region. It will provide access to customers to authentic product and a huge boost to local economy,” observed the Lt Governor.
The Lt Governor shared the inspiring journey of Self-made women entrepreneurs, Shalini Khokhar from Rajouri and Pattan’s Shamshada Begum. With commitment, conviction and courage, they are making significant contribution to a modern, strong and self-reliant J&K, he added.
The Lt Governor lauded the efforts of progressive farmers like Seva Ram of Galhar, Kishtwar in improving agricultural productivity and encouraging the adoption of new agriculture techniques.

The Lt Governor commended the “Give Plastic and Take Gold” campaign launched by Farooq Ahmad Ganie, Sarpanch of Sadiwara, Anantnag to transform the Swachh Abhiyan into Janbhagidari and fulfill the dream of Swachh Bharat.
He called upon the PRI representatives to replicate the noble initiative and ensure community participation in cleanliness drives. Youth clubs also have an important role to play in promoting swachh abhiyan, he added.
The Lt Governor congratulated Sarpanch, Panch and District Administration of Sira-A Gram Panchayat of Udhampur, Phalmerg of Kupwara Fatehpora of Baramulla for receiving awards in different categories at the National Panchayat Awards 2023.
The Lt Governor made a special mention of Prof Jagbir Singh Sudan of Poonch for his selfless service and inspiring others to actively participate in the service of humanity. The service activities of his organization ‘Pritam Spiritual Foundation’ are truly commendable, added the Lt Governor.
The Lt Governor appreciated the work of Sonia Verma of Gurah Brahmana village in Akhnoor who has planted more than 60 thousand saplings in the areas of Akhnoor and Khour. He asked the citizens to follow this inspiring example of environmental consciousness.

Karnataka poll: KCR eyes 40 Assembly seats with significant Telugu voters

Hyderabad: In a bid to expand the activities of the BRS in Karnataka and Maharashtra, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has started the work of identifying assembly constituencies dominated by Telugu voters in the two states. After the announcement of the Karnataka Assembly elections, KCR sent teams of leaders to Karnataka and sought a separate report from some experts.
There are reportedly 40 assembly constituencies in 12 districts of Karnataka where Telugu voters have a decisive position. The success of any candidate will depend on their support. After the release of the notification for the Karnataka Assembly elections, KCR has given the responsibility of various areas of Karnataka to ministers, MLAs and MPs and will campaign in favour of JD(S) candidates in these 40 assembly constituencies.
The districts identified are Bellary, Kolar, Bangalore (Rural), Bangalore (Urban), Rachaur, Kapala Tumkur, Chitradurga, Chikalapura, Yadgiri, Bidar and Kalaburagi. These districts have a significant number of Telugu people migrating from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Most of the sections that influence the elections in Karnataka include Lingayats, Vokkaligas and SC/ST communities, but a significant number of Telugu voters are present in 12 districts. In view of the triangular contest between BJP, Congress and Janata Dal Secular in Karnataka, KCR has decided to support his ally Janta Dal Secular to prevent division of votes. BRS leaders will campaign in favour of Janata Dal-Secular candidates.
The number of assembly seats in Karnataka is 224 and in the 2018 elections, the candidates got the victory on 52 assembly constituencies with a majority of less than 5,000 votes. The state threw up a fractured mandate in 2018 elections with BJP emerging as the single largest party with 104 and the Congress won 87 seats while the JD(S) won 30. It is said that the Janata Dal-Secular’s tally will increase if Telugu voters support it.
The Election Commission announced that single-phase polls wil be held in Karnataka on May 10. The results will be declare 13 May.

JK’s Oil Industry To Witness Significant Transformation with ₹ 1290 Cr Outlay: Govt

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir’s oil industry would be witnessing a significant transformation with implementation of multifarious initiatives under Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP) by the Agriculture Production Department.
The recent release of final report by the Apex Committee, headed by Dr Mangla Rai, Former DG ICAR, has charted out the roadmap for implementation of 29 projects under HADP, a government spokerperson said in a statement.
Significantly, among the approved projects, promotion of oilseed cultivation has been given due consideration. The Oil seed project included several interventions aimed at increasing oilseed production and productivity, with an estimated annual output worth ₹ 1290 crore, the statement reads.
Additional Chief Secretary, Agriculture Production Department, Atal Dulloo, reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir’s oil industry is about to receive a significant boost. The department will be implementing a multifaceted initiative aimed at promoting oilseed cultivation in the region with a project outlay of ₹ 31.00 crore. This three year project is expected to create more job opportunities and contribute towards overall economic growth of the region.
Jammu and Kashmir is known for its diverse agro-climatic conditions that provide a suitable environment for cultivation of various crops, including oilseeds, the spokesperson said.
To promote oilseed cultivation in the region, the JK government has taken several initiatives under the Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP).
The government intends to bring 210 Th Ha under oilseed cultivation from the current 140 Th Ha over the next three years. About 202.50 Th Ha shall be covered under rapeseed and mustard cultivation and 7.50 Th Ha shall be covered under sesame seed cultivation.
Besides, 70,000 Ha of additional areas shall be covered in potential oilseed districts like Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Udhampur, Rajouri, Reasi, Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama, Budgam, and Ganderbal and districts like Shopian, Bandipora, Ramban, and Doda, by utilizing fallow lands, culturable waste lands and leveraging increased cropping intensity apart from promoting intercropping systems.
More than 50% of the net sown area in Jammu division is rain-fed. Therefore, this project aims to promote crop diversification by cultivating sesame seed as a Kharif crop in Kandi and rain-fed areas of Jammu division. The total requirement of edible oils in the UT is ₹ 14.20 lakh quintal, whereas the UT produces only 3.36 lakh quintal. Hence, this initiative is crucial for region’s food security and economic growth.
The Union Territory (UT) is all set to witness a massive transformation in the agriculture sector with implementation of a ground-breaking project that promises to increase oil seed production and create employment opportunities. The interventions, which included providing subsidized seeds and fertilizers, increasing the seed replacement rate and adopting innovative technologies like INM/IPM and micro irrigation, are aimed at boosting oil seed production from 11.20 lakh quintal to 25.20 lakh quintal annually, and productivity from 8 quintal per Ha to 12 quintal per Ha. This will also result in a significant increase in production of edible oils from 3.36 lakh quintal to 9.07 lakh quintal. The project is expected to reduce the deficit in oil seed production by 35% and substantially decrease the outflow of foreign exchange due to oilseed imports.
As part of the project, farmers will receive 50% assistance with a subsidy ceiling of ₹4000/- per quintal for purchasing high-yielding varieties of mustard and rapeseed. Similarly, 50% subsidy with a ceiling of ₹8000/- per quintal will be provided to beneficiaries for procuring hybrid rapeseed, mustard, and improved varieties of sesame seed.
Additionally, to improve the seed replacement rate of oil seeds, 50% subsidy with a ceiling of ₹2500/- per quintal will be provided for producing foundation and certified seeds to boost productivity and promote area expansion. To further increase cultivation, 11,200 Ha will be brought under cluster cultivation of oil seeds, with 50% incentives extended up to ₹5000/- per Ha under cluster demonstrations and up to ₹7000/- per Ha under front-line demonstrations to meet all input costs for the cultivation of mustard, rapeseed, sesame, and linseed.
The project also included the provision of essential production inputs like gypsum, pyrite, lime, supply of azobacter, rhizobium, etc., PP chemicals, bio pesticides, insecticides and bio agents at 50% subsidy, up to a maximum ceiling of ₹750/- per Ha. As a significant boost to automation, 300 power-operated spray pumps will be distributed at 50% subsidy with a maximum subsidy ceiling of ₹10000/- per unit and 180 power weeder/seed drill/multi-crop planter/multi-crop thresher, etc., will be distributed at 50% subsidy with a maximum ceiling of ₹75000/- per unit. The project also envisages establishment of 150 borewells and 150 sprinkler systems to upgrade the irrigation system.
Additionally, under post-harvest management, 50% incentive will be provided on the establishment of 70 oil mills with filter press, 30 oilseed extractors, and two branding and marketing units.
The project is expected to lead to a net increase in the return to farmers by 10 to 12% and a reduction in input costs by 15 to 20%, besides creating 7800 jobs and 300 enterprises.
This ambitious project is a significant step towards transforming the agriculture sector in the UT, and its success will contribute towards overall economic growth of the region.

U.S. closer to approving ‘significant number’ of Abrams tanks to Ukraine

The transfer of U.S. and German tanks would mark a major development in the West’s effort to arm Ukraine. Top Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have spent weeks pleading for tanks as Kyiv prepares for fresh Russian offensives in the country’s east.
One of the two U.S. officials said the Biden administration is considering sending around 30 Abrams tanks.
The vehicles would likely come through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, according to a third person familiar with the issue. The program allows Washington to finance the purchase of weapons and equipment for Ukraine, as opposed to pulling them from existing U.S. stockpiles.
The Pentagon never took tanks off the table, stressed a fourth U.S. official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter ahead of an announcement. But in recent weeks U.S. officials have publicly cited the difficulties of providing the M1s, the Army’s main battle tank. They have said the Abrams made little operational sense for Ukraine at this moment because they guzzle jet fuel and require long supply lines to maintain.
“The Abrams tank is a very complicated piece of equipment. It’s expensive, it’s hard to train on. It has a jet engine, I think it’s about three gallons to the mile of jet fuel. It is not the easiest system to maintain,” Colin Kahl, the Pentagon’s top policy official, told reporters last week after a trip to Kyiv. “It may or may not be the right system.”
The developments come after weeks of tense discussions between Washington, Berlin and their European allies. Since Scholz met with U.S. lawmakers last week, the German government has shifted its stance, at one point denying it had linked the transfers of the Abrams and Leopards.
A parade of Democrats and Republicans has pressured the Biden administration to grant Berlin’s request to send U.S. tanks first.
“If the Germans continue to say we will only send or release Leopards on the condition that Americans send Abrams, we should send Abrams,” Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), a close Biden ally, told POLITICO moments before Sky News Arabia first broke news of the decision on Tuesday.

The M1 Abrams tanks currently in the U.S. Army’s motor pools would first need to be stripped of sensitive communications and other equipment before being sent to Ukraine, making it an expensive and time-consuming process.
A handful of countries operate less modern versions of the Abrams, including Australia, Iraq, Egypt, Kuwait and Morocco, while Poland has 250 on order slated to begin arriving in 2024.
Egypt by far has the most Abrams tanks in service, with over 1,000 older M1A1 models as the result of a decades-long co-production deal with the United States.
