LinkedIn lays off 716 employees, shuts China app

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Microsoft-owned LinkedIn has laid off 716 employees, as the company makes changes to its Global Business Organisation (GBO), along with shutting down its InCareer app in China.

The company’s CEO Ryan Roslansky said in an email to employees that the move was aimed at streamlining the company’s operations.

“As we guide LinkedIn through this rapidly changing landscape, we are making changes to our Global Business Organization (GBO) and our China strategy that will result in a reduction of roles for 716 employees,” he wrote late on Monday.

    MS Education Academy

“If your role is directly impacted by this decision, you will receive a calendar invitation within the next hour for a meeting with a leader from your team and a representative from our GTO,” he added.

He admitted that while the platform is making meaningful progress creating economic opportunities for its members and customers and experiencing record engagement on the platform, “we’re also seeing shifts in customer behaviour and slower revenue growth”.

“In an evolving market, we must continuously have the conviction to adapt our strategy in order to make our vision a reality,” said the CEO.

LinkedIn saw record engagement in the March quarter as more than 930 million members globally now turn to the professional social network to connect, learn, sell and get hired.

The LinkedIn revenue increased 8 per cent in the March quarter for the tech giant. In 2016, Microsoft acquired LinkedIn for more than $26 billion.

The company was also in the process of discontinuing product and engineering teams in China and the downsizing of corporate, sales, and marketing functions.

Roslansky said that they will focus China strategy on assisting companies operating in China to hire, market and train abroad.

“As we plan for FY24, we’re expecting the macro environment to remain challenging. We’re adapting as we have done this year and will continue to operate with the ambition we need to deliver on our vision and the pragmatism required to run the business well,” said the CEO.

Amazon shuts down health-focused Halo division, lays off employees

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Amazon has shuttered its health-focused Halo division and discontinued Halo Band, Halo View, and Halo Rise devices which are no longer available on its website. The company has also laid off employees from the Halo team.

The company said in a blog post late on Wednesday that beginning on August 1, Amazon Halo devices, and the Amazon Halo app, will no longer function.

“We recently made the very difficult decision to stop supporting Amazon Halo effective July 31, 2023. We notified impacted employees in the US and Canada today. In other regions, we are following local processes, which may include time for consultation with employee representative bodies and possibly result in longer timelines to communicate with impacted employees,” said Amazon.

    MS Education Academy

For employees who are impacted by this decision, Amazon is providing packages that include a separation payment, transitional health insurance benefits, and external job placement support.

In the coming weeks, Amazon will fully refund purchases made in the preceding 12 months of Amazon Halo View, Amazon Halo Band, Amazon Halo Rise, and Amazon Halo accessory bands.

“In addition, any unused prepaid Halo subscriptions fees will be refunded to your original payment method. If you have a paid subscription, as of today you will no longer be charged the monthly subscription fee. You do not need to take any additional steps,” said the e-commerce giant.

Amazon launched the original Halo Band in 2020.

The company said it encourages users to recycle Amazon Halo devices and accessories through the Amazon Recycling Programme.

  • Veterinary Centre Shuts Over ‘Non-Payment Of Rent’

    Mawar Qalamabad Inhabitants Aghast

    Murtaza Mushtaq

Handwara, Apr 19 (GNS): The inhabitants of Mawar Qalamabad and its adjacent areas are up in arms as the only veterinary centre catering several areas has gone shut since last two weeks.

A local delegation to GNS, led by District President Kupwara, JKAADP, Mohammad Ashraf Dar, said that a veterinary centre was functioning in the area for the last many years and would cater to the needs of several areas in Mawar belt. The centre, they said, was shut nearly a fortnight ago after the owner of the property, where the centre was setup, claimed to have not received any rent for almost six years now.

Aghast over the non-availability of any alternative, the locals have urged the authorities concerned to make some alternate arrangement till the issue is resolved.

“We also urge district administration Kupwara to look into the matter for an early redressal of the issue”, they further said. (GNS)

Sweden shuts down embassy in Pakistan for security reasons

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Sweden has announced closing its embassy in Pakistan “indefinitely” due to the prevailing “security situation” in the crisis-hit country’s capital.

The embassy did not elaborate on the nature of the threat, but Pakistan’s political situation is getting worse amid growing tension between the government and the Supreme Court.

Pakistan’s Supreme Court was hearing a petition to annul a bill aiming at curbing the powers of the chief justice to form panels of his choice for different cases.

    MS Education Academy

“Due to the current security situation in Islamabad, the Embassy of Sweden is closed for visitors. The Migration Section is not, at the moment, able to handle requests of any kind,” a notice on the embassy’s website reads.

“Also, we cannot send any documents to our consulates, Gerry s, or to your home address. We understand that this will cause inconvenience. However, the safety of our applicants and staff members is of the highest priority,” it said.

The notice also stated that any questions regarding the reopening of the mission cannot be answered at the moment.

Many believe the decision was linked to the recent incident of the burning of the Quran in Sweden.

A Danish-Swedish far-right extremist burned a copy of the Quran in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm on January 21 under the protection of Swedish police, drawing condemnation from Muslims worldwide.

The political leaders of Pakistan, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and ousted premier Imran Khan, had condemned the incident.

“No words are enough to adequately condemn the abhorrable act of desecration of the Holy Quran by a right-wing extremist in Sweden. The garb of the freedom of expression cannot be used to hurt the religious emotions of 1.5 billion Muslims across the world. This is unacceptable,” Sharif had tweeted.

China temporarily closed down the consular section of its embassy in Pakistan in February due to “technical issues”, days after advising Chinese citizens in this country to be cautious due to the deteriorating security situation.

  • SC shuts contempt plea against Delhi police in hate speech case

SC shuts contempt plea against Delhi police in hate speech case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday closed activist Tushar Gandhi’s contempt plea against the Delhi Police after taking note of submissions that a charge sheet in a case of hate speeches made at religious assemblies in the national capital in 2021 was filed in a court here.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice J B Pardiwala considered the submissions of Additional Solicitor General K M Nataraj, appearing for the Delhi Police, that a charge sheet after conclusion of the investigation was filed in a court of the Metropolitan Magistrate here on April 4.

“In view of the filing of the charge sheet, it is not expedient in the interest of justice to continue with the present contempt petition,” the bench said.

    MS Education Academy

The bench refused to direct Delhi police that a copy of the charge sheet be made available to Gandhi, who is not part of the proceedings before the trial court.

“Now the charge sheet is filed, our role has come to an end,” the bench said, adding that now the proceedings in the trial court will be conducted as per the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

Earlier, the Delhi Police had said the investigation into the case was at an advanced stage and a probe report will be filed shortly.

Nataraj had said that the police were expecting a Forensic Science Laboratory report on voice samples of the accused and the charge sheet will be filed after that.

The hate speech case is related to a Hindu Yuva Vahini event organised in Delhi under the leadership of Suresh Chavhanke, the editor of ‘Sudarshan News’, in December 2021.

Lawyer Shadan Farasat, appearing for activist Gandhi, had said the police did not take any concrete steps to prevent such hate speeches.

The apex court had on January 13 posed a volley of questions to the Delhi Police over the delay in registration of FIR and “no palpable progress” in the investigation of a case of hate speeches made at religious assemblies in the national capital in 2021 and sought a report from the investigating officer.

The top court was hearing a contempt petition filed by Gandhi alleging inaction by the Uttarakhand Police and Delhi Police in alleged hate speech cases.

On November 11 last year, the bench had discharged the Uttarakhand government and its police chief from a list of parties to the contempt plea.

The contempt petition was filed seeking punishment for the police chiefs of Delhi and Uttarakhand for their alleged inaction in the cases in violation of the apex court judgement in the Tehseen Poonawala case.

In the judgement, the top court had laid down guidelines as to what action needed to be taken in hate crimes, including mob lynching.

In his petition, the activist sought contempt action against senior police officers for not taking any steps in accordance with the top court’s guidelines meant to curb hate speeches and mob lynching.

The plea claimed that immediately after the events took place, the speeches were available in public domain, still the Uttarakhand Police and the Delhi Police did not act against the offenders.

The hate speeches were made at the ‘dharma sansad’ held in Haridwar from December 17 to 19, 2021 and in Delhi on December 19, 2021, the petition alleged.

McDonald’s temporarily shuts US offices, plans major layoffs

    [ad_1]

New York: Fast food giant McDonald’s has temporarily shut its offices in the US this week as it gears up to lay off several employees as part of the restructuring plan amid the global economic meltdown, the media reported.

According to Wall Street Journal, the Chicago-based burger major told US employees, and some international staff, “that they should work from home from Monday through Wednesday so it can deliver staffing decisions virtually”.

“During the week of April 3, we will communicate key decisions related to roles and staffing levels across the organization,” the company said in an internal email.

    MS Education Academy

“We want to ensure the comfort and confidentiality of our people during the notification period,” the company added.

McDonald’s was yet to comment on the development or on the number of employees being laid off.

In January, the company said it planned to make “difficult” decisions about changes to its corporate staffing levels by April.

CEO Chris Kempczinski had said at the time that he expected to save money as part of the workforce assessment.

McDonald’s employs more than 1,50,000 people globally in corporate roles and its owned restaurants with 70 percent of them located outside of the US.

The company has conducted several rounds of layoffs in recent years.

In 2018, McDonald’s said that the company was cutting its management to be “more dynamic, nimble and competitive”.

  • India: Israel embassy shuts in protest against its PM over new judicial laws

India: Israel embassy shuts in protest against its PM over new judicial laws

    [ad_1]

Soon after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sacked defence minister Yoav Gallant for opposing the former’s controversial reforms that overhaul the judicial system, Israel’s embassy in India called for a protest against their PM.

In a statement released on Monday evening, the embassy said, “The Histadrut, Israel’s largest labour union, instructed all government employees to go on strike, including Israel’s diplomatic missions around the world. The embassy of Israel will be closed today until further notice and no consular services will be provided.”

All officials of the Israeli embassy in India and around the world will participate in the protest.

Earlier, Israeli president Isaac Herzog appealed to PM Netanyahu to put an end to this, warning that the move has put the country’s security, economy and society under threat.

He also called on the government to put aside political considerations for the sake of the nation.

Netanyahu’s new ultra-religious and ultra-nationalist government voted in favour of a bill that would allow the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) to cancel Supreme Court rulings with a simple majority vote.

The country has witnessed massive protests for over two months. They accused PM Netanyahu of his far-right extremist views, including racism and trying to establish a dictatorship.

Why are Israelis protesting against judicial reforms?

Netanyahu was elected in November 2022 as the Prime Minister for the sixth time. His cabinet is considered the most extreme, nationalistic, and exclusionary government in Israel’s history.

From the beginning, the Israeli government sought to make significant changes to the Supreme Court that would remove its independence and power to control the Parliament.

Several proposed plans would limit the court’s ability to overturn laws it deems unconstitutional, allowing a simple majority of the Knesset to overturn its decisions. It also gives state lawmakers and appointees effective power over the nine-person committee that appoints judges and removes key officials from the attorney general. These and other changes undermine the power of an independent judiciary in an otherwise unchecked parliamentary system.

The issue has created significant rifts in Israeli society prompting even reservists, the backbone of the Israeli army, to threaten to withdraw from service.

  • Meta CEO fires 10K more employees, shuts 5K additional open roles

Meta CEO fires 10K more employees, shuts 5K additional open roles

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday announced to sack an additional 10,000 employees via several job cut rounds in the coming months.

In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg said overall, “we expect to reduce our team size by around 10,000 people and to close around 5,000 additional open roles that we haven’t yet hired” in the company’s “year of efficiency”.

In a separate filing with the US SEC, Meta said the new job cuts will lower the high end of its expense guidance for the year by $3 billion.

Over the next couple of months, organisation leaders will announce restructuring plans focused on flattening the organisations, cancelling lower priority projects, and reducing hiring rates.

“We will let recruiting team members know tomorrow whether they’re impacted. We expect to announce restructurings and layoffs in our tech groups in late April, and then our business groups in late May,” the Meta CEO said.

In a small number of cases, it may take through the end of the year to complete these changes, he added.

“Our timelines for international teams will also look different, and local leaders will follow up with more details,” said Zuckerberg.

The fresh cuts come just four months after he laid off 11,000 employees, or 13 per cent of the company, in November last year.

Zuckerberg said that after restructuring, Meta plans to lift hiring and transfer freezes in each group.

“Other relevant efficiency timelines include targeting this summer to complete our analysis from our hybrid work year of learning so we can further refine our distributed work model. We also aim to have a steady stream of developer productivity enhancements and process improvements throughout the year,” he added.

In its ‘Year of Efficiency’, Meta will make the organisation flatter by removing multiple layers of management.

“As part of this, we will ask many managers to become individual contributors. We’ll also have individual contributors report into almost every level — not just the bottom — so information flow between people doing the work and management will be faster,” Zuckerberg noted.

Toys ‘R’ Us shuts Hyderabad store within 24 hours

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Toys ‘R’ Us, a leading American toy and clothing retailer, shut its store at a shopping mall in Hyderabad within 24 hours of opening it due to some legal issues, sources said.

The over 4,000 square feet store was opened in Sarath City Capital mall on March 11 but closed the next day.

The mall owners reportedly pulled the plug on Toys ‘R’ Us due to a no-compete clause with another global toy retailer, which already had a store in the same mall.

Toys ‘R’ Us has been launched in India in two formats – Toys ‘R’ Us, which is the world’s leading toy store, and Babies ‘R’ Us, a one-stop destination for baby essentials.

The retailer’s India operations are run by a Bengaluru-based firm, Ace turtle, which entered into a joint venture with the Flipkart Group’s wholesale entity in India in June 2021 to acquire the licence for Toys ‘R’ Us and Babies ‘R’ Us.

This is the second entry of the American toy and clothing retailer in India in six years. In 2017, it had tied up with Tablez India, a division of Abu Dhabi-based Lulu Group International, for an exclusive master franchise agreement.

The global toy brand was launched in India in October 2017. It had plans to open over 200 stores but it could manage to open only 14 stores which wound up within three years of operations.

Twitter shuts off internal Slack, employees say didn’t pay bills

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Twitter has apparently shut off its internal communication system Slack and employees posted on anonymous workplace chat app Blind that the company had stopped paying its Slack bills.

The move left employees baffled and no one worked throughout the day on Friday as they were suddenly unable to communicate, reports Platformer.

Employees also lost access to Jira, a tracking software that allows engineers to ship code and monitor progress on new features.

While some employees communicated over email, some decided to just take the day off and others took two days off.

Jira access was later restored but Slack wasn’t down for “routine maintenance.”

“There is no such thing as routine maintenance,” a Slack employee was quoted as saying.

A Slack spokesperson confirmed that the company did not deactivate Twitter’s workspace or user accounts. Slack rarely shuts down services for maintenance.

“We didn’t pay our Slack bill. Now everyone is barely working. Penny wise, pound foolish,” wrote a Twitter employee.

Another called the disappearance of Slack the “proverbial final straw.”

Twitter did not immediately comment on the report.

Meanwhile, the platform was down for several users for a couple of minutes on Friday, and nearly 55 per cent of users reported problems accessing the platform from mobile.

The outage was brief and the services were restored after some time.
