San Francisco: Google has confirmed that it will be shutting down the app responsible for the Jacquard accessories made by the company’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group in April.

Jacquard, a full-scale digital technology platform created for smart apparel, footwear, and other everyday essentials, was unveiled by Google in 2015 and debuted two years later on special jackets from Levi’s, reports 9to5Google.

Google’s Jacquard technology can embed touch sensors and haptic feedback into clothing, which can then be paired with a smartphone.

In effect, these smart jackets — and later smart Yves Saint Laurent backpacks — allowed users to perform specific (customisable) tasks on their phones without ever touching them.

A double-tap, for example, could play/pause music, brushing the smart fabric could change tracks, and briefly covering the sensor would mute/unmute notifications, the report said.

Several companies have released products that incorporate Google Jacquard since its initial release.

Last year, Google shut down Duplex on the Web, a technology that enables Google Assistant to automate certain user tasks for site visitors.

The company introduced Duplex on the Web during its 2019 Google I/O developer conference.

Duplex on the Web enables Google Assistant to perform different actions on the sites.

The decision was made as a preventive step to ensure that the celebrations are calm and that no adverse occurrences occur in Hyderabad.

  • Trump’s CDC director says Fauci shut down debate on Covid’s origin

Trump’s CDC director says Fauci shut down debate on Covid’s origin

    [ad_1]

Redfield said Fauci, who led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the time, and Collins left him out because Redfield suspected the coronavirus had leaked from the Chinese lab.

Fauci, who was not at the hearing, dismissed Redfield’s accusation as “completely untrue.”

“No one excluded anyone,” he told POLITICO after the hearing.

“And the idea of saying that he was not wanted there because he had a different opinion … there were several people on the call who had the opinion that it might have been an engineered virus,” said Fauci, who retired from his government post at the end of last year.

Collins, who is now a science adviser to President Joe Biden, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. He has previously said he shares Fauci’s view that the virus likely came from nature, but that a lab leak was possible.

Redfield thought the highly infectious nature of the virus distinguished it from other coronaviruses and made it unlikely to have evolved naturally, he told representatives.

Fauci and others said it most likely came from a natural spillover from animals, as was the case with other coronaviruses, such as SARS and MERS, Redfield said.

The former CDC director said he later found out he was excluded from a Feb. 1, 2020, conference call with Fauci and Jeremy Farrar, a U.K. scientist who at the time led the Wellcome Trust, and other conversations that resulted in the publication of an article in Nature in March 2020 dismissing the possibility of the virus originating in a lab. Farrar is now the World Health Organization’s top scientist.

Fauci told POLITICO he was not involved in the drafting of the article.

But Republican representatives at the hearing accused Fauci of having orchestrated it to deflect attention from U.S. funding research at the Wuhan lab.

“I think Dr. Fauci and Dr. Collins got caught with their hands in the cookie jar. They got caught supercharging viruses in an unsecured Chinese lab,” said James Comer (R-Ky.), chairman of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee.

Fauci has repeatedly denied that the NIH financed so-called gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab. That research aims to make viruses either more lethal or more transmissible or both to find ways to combat them.

Some Democratic representatives at the hearing warned that accusing Fauci of ill motives would further erode trust in government health officials, threatening public health.

“I want the facts, but I hope and say to my colleagues on the other side: We cannot go down a dangerous path by pushing unfounded conspiracies about Dr. Fauci and other long-serving career public health officials,” said Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.).

Amazon to shut 8 Go stores to cut costs

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: As part of its cost-cutting effort, Amazon plans to shut eight of its Go convenience stores in the US.

According to CNBC, the tech giant will close two Go stores in New York City, two locations in Seattle, and four stores in San Francisco on April 1.

In addition, the company said it will work to help affected employees secure other roles at the company.

“Like any physical retailer, we periodically assess our portfolio of stores and make optimisation decisions along the way,” Amazon spokesperson Jessica Martin, was quoted as saying.

“In this case, we’ve decided to close a small number of Amazon Go stores in Seattle, New York City, and San Francisco. We remain committed to the Amazon Go format, operate more than 20 Amazon Go stores across the US, and will continue to learn which locations and features resonate most with customers as we keep evolving our Amazon Go stores,” she added.

Moreover, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said that the company is also temporarily pausing expansion of the Fresh grocery chain until it can find a format that resonates with customers and “where we like the economics”, the report mentioned.

In 2018, the first Amazon Go store opened to the public at the company’s headquarters in Seattle.

  • Sisodia held in open and shut case of corruption: Congress

Sisodia held in open and shut case of corruption: Congress

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday said AAP leader Manish Sisodia has been arrested in an “open and shut case of corruption” and that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal should also be arrested for his alleged involvement in the excise policy case.

The two leaders are “deeply involved in corruption” and should be dealt with accordingly, Congress leader Ajay Maken said.

Sisodia was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday in connection with alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy for 2021-22.

“This is an open and shut case of corruption and a big scam has taken place in Delhi, and it should be viewed accordingly,” Maken said.

He said Kejriwal should also be arrested in the case.

“It has now been established in one of the charge sheets and one of the accused liquor barons has said he was made to speak to Kejriwal on Facetime,” he added.

The Kejriwal government had set up a committee to recommend changes in the excise policy but just the opposite of what the panel recommended was done “so that corruption could be done”, Maken charged.

The Congress leader claimed Sisodia and Kejriwal are “deeply involved in corruption” and asserted that they should be dealt with accordingly.

“Those who are sympathising with Manish Sisodia should know that this is a matter of corruption and it should be viewed accordingly,” Maken told PTI.

The AAP, which is projecting the action against Sisodia as “injustice”, should answer as to why changes were made against the recommendations of the committee, he said.

Maken further said, “I would also like to ask the central government not to misuse central agencies even in a genuine case like this and make it seem like political vendetta. They should use them sparingly.”

Some Congress leaders including Abhishek Singhvi and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot have spoken in support of Sisodia and accused the government of misusing agencies against opposition leaders. Singhvi, who is also Sisodia’s lawyer in court, later clarified that his remarks did not represent the Congress’ stand.

34 US Companies likely to get shut down as they struggle to find Indian Origin CEOs

    [ad_1]

Neal Mohan has become the latest person to join the list of Indian-origin CEOs globally. The development comes after Susan Wojcicki has stepped down as the CEO of the video-streaming platform YouTube. Google is being led by Sundar Pichai while Microsoft and IBM are led by Satya Nadella and Arvind Krishna who are also Indians. A long list Indian origin CEOs heading global MNCs has been doing rounds on social media.

Reportedly, US companies are not only preferring but choosing only Indian origin CEOs and this had led to massive short fall of Indian Origin CEOs in United States. US running short of Indian Origin CEOs has led to more than 34 companies shutting down in next one month.

Speaking to The Fauxy Business, a US tech-giant’s board of director said “We only want Indian origin CEO, if we can’t get one we are firing all the employees, because we can’t afford both, the employees and a non-Indian origin CEO, we will have to shut our shops“.

Another company’s director said “We failed to get an Indian-origin CEO and once we made our office boy the CEO since he’s an Indian origin but after India introduced CAA, he also went back. Unfortunately, we are shutting down“.
