Case should be heard in fast-track court, appeals Shraddha Walkar’s father

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In the interest of justice, the murder case of Shraddha Walkar should be heard in a time-bound manner in a fast-track court, her father said on Monday.

According to the chargesheet, Aaftab Amin Poonawala allegedly strangled his live-in partner Walkar on May 18 and sawed her body into several pieces, which he kept in a fridge for almost three weeks at his residence in south Delhi’s Mehrauli. He then allegedly scattered the remains across Delhi, some of which have since been recovered.

“We request for the proceedings to be conducted in a time-bound manner in a fast-track court,” Walkar’s father Vikas Walkar said.

His counsel, Advocate Seema Kushwaha, said she would shortly move a petition in Delhi High Court for time-bound proceedings in a fast-track court.

Vikas, the complainant in the case, said he was unable to perform his daughter’s last rites because the recovered body parts were kept as evidence.

“In a few months, it will be an entire year of my daughter’s death. When will I get the remains to complete her last rites?” Vikas asked while speaking to reporters outside the court.

Referring to Monday’s proceedings during which an audio clip of Walkar was played in court, Kushwaha said Vikas started trembling because of the emotional turmoil stemming from hearing his daughter’s voice.

The prosecution, during the arguments on the charges, played an audio clip from the Practo App through which the couple had booked a session with a psychologist.

In the clip, Walkar could be heard saying, “…whenever I start ranting about my anger, if he is somewhere around, anywhere in Vasai (near Mumbai), anywhere around me in this city, he will find me, he will hunt me down, he will try to kill me, that’s the problem.

“I don’t know (how) many times he tried to kill me — this is not the first time he tried to kill me… The way he grabbed my neck, I blacked out. I was unable to breathe for 30 seconds… Thankfully I was able to defend myself by pulling his hair.”

Kushwaha said Vikas felt that his daughter was still alive on hearing his daughter’s voice in the recording.

She said before DNA profile matching confirmed that the recovered remains belonged to his daughter, Vikas had hoped against all odds that she was alive.

During its arguments in court, Delhi Police said there are “incriminating circumstances revealed through reliable and clinching evidence which form a chain of events”.

PIL in SC seeks framing of rules for live-in relationships; mentions Shraddha Walkar’s killing

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A PIL was filed in the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Centre to frame rules for registration of live-in relationships as it cited increase in crimes like rape and murder allegedly committed by live-in partners.

The plea, which referred to the recent killing of Shraddha Walkar allegedly by her live-in partner Aaftab Amin Poonawala, also sought framing of rules and guidelines for registration of such relationships.

The PIL said registration of live-in relationship would lead to accurate information being available to both the live-in partners about each other and also to the government about each of them regarding their marital status, their criminal history and other relevant details.

Besides the increase in crimes like rape and murder, the plea, filed by lawyer Mamta Rani, said there has been a “huge increase in the false rape cases being filed by the women wherein the women claims to be living in live-in relationships with the accused and it is always difficult for the courts to find out from the evidence whether the fact of living in live-in relationship is proved by the backing of evidence”.

Shraddha Walkar murder: Delhi court takes cognisance of charge sheet, scrutiny on Feb 21

    [ad_1]

Delhi: A Delhi court on Tuesday took cognisance of the charge sheet filed by Delhi Police against Aaftab Amin Poonawala, accused of murdering his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar and then chopping her body into several pieces.

On January 24, the police had filed the charge sheet in the case which contains over 6,000 pages and the court had extended Poonawala’s custody for 14 days.

After taking cognisance of the charge sheet, the court posted the matter for its scrutiny on February 21.

According to sources, the charge sheet was prepared on the basis of forensic and electronic evidence, and has around 100 witnesses.

Poonawala has been accused of killing Walkar and then chopping her body into several pieces and storing them in a refrigerator before disposing of them in the Chhatarpur forest area over a period of three months.

During the last hearing when Poonawala was produced before the court through video conferencing before Metropolitan Magistrate Aviral Shukla, he had contended that he wanted to change his lawyer.

Poonawala had demanded law books to study. The court had also directed the prison authorities to provide him with warm clothes.

On January 6, Poonawala had moved an application in the court seeking release of his debit and credit cards, citing the need for funds to purchase day-to-day items, as well as warm clothes.

Poonawala’s application was moved through his advocate seeking to release funds from his bank account citing that he did not have enough warm clothes to counter the winter chill inside the prison.
