Cinemas will show King Charles’s coronation. Is this their crowning glory, or a servile sop?

    [ad_1]

For some, the cinema will be a sanctuary from the onslaught of the coronation. It will be a dark, warm, safe space to visit for anyone who wants to seal themselves away from the flag-waving inanity of the rest of the country next Saturday lunchtime. It sounds incredibly inviting. I haven’t ruled out doing it myself.

That said, anyone who plans to use their local cinema as a coronation escape hatch might want to check ahead a little bit first. If, for example, their plan was to visit the Showcase Cinema de Lux in the Bluewater shopping centre, then I am afraid they are doomed to be thwarted. This is because, according to a press release, the cinema will be showing the coronation free of charge.

More than that, in fact. The cinema has chosen to rename its bar area The King’s Gallery. The drinks it serves have been renamed things like Corgi Cosmo and Monarch Mojito. A new portrait of King Charles will be hung there, painted by the cinema’s vice president of global marketing. Showcase even hired a King Charles lookalike to sort of wander around for a photoshoot. “King Charles seemed extremely impressed with the refurbishment”, said the press release of a man they hired specifically to look extremely impressed with the refurbishment.

Now, the big question is whether this is a good idea or not. Should cinemas be showing the coronation? I have to admit, I’m a little on the fence about it. My first instinct was that it instantly devalues the concept of cinema. To go and see a film is to witness a vast, expensive vision of imagination that has been specifically designed to be seen in that precise environment. The image will have been calibrated for maximum spectacle. The sound will burst forth overwhelmingly. Cinemas are engineered to be full-body – sometimes even out-of-body – experiences.

It isn’t something you necessarily equate with live BBC television footage of a carriage slowly trundling past a branch of Pret. Indeed, had the film pioneers of a century ago realised that one day their defining contribution to global culture would be used to show Huw Edwards listlessly filling for time while thousands of elderly dignitaries edge their way into Westminster Abbey, there’s a good chance they might not have bothered with it.

That said, this is far too precious an attitude to take. Cinemas, as we all know, are in trouble. People are only too happy to avoid seeing new releases theatrically now, because they know that they’ll just turn up for free on Disney+ in a few weeks. When a film does even reasonably well these days, it’s an anomaly. The death of the theatrical experience is real, and cinemas need to change or die.

Viewed through this lens, showing the coronation seems like a no-brainer. People will turn up. Seats will be filled. They might cry, like you did during Titanic. They might laugh, like they did during Home Alone. They might drunkenly vomit, like one guy did at the end of The Dark Knight when I went to see it 15 years ago. The actual content of the coronation might be dull and staid, but the feeling it will engender inside the cinema has the potential to be absolutely joyous.

And who knows, simply being in a cinema might remind the coronation-watchers why they used to love cinemas. They might become flooded with nostalgia. They might clutch each other’s hands over the armrests like they did when they were teenagers. They might see a poster for a new release, and decide to take a chance on it, and fall in love and start going to the cinema regularly again. There is a chance – a small one, but a chance – that putting the coronation on in cinemas will save cinema as we know it.

So, on reflection, I think I am all for this turn of events. The coronation should be shown in cinemas. In fact it should only be shown in cinemas, because that way all the people who actually like that rubbish will all be in one place and I’ll be able to go about my day unimpeded.

    capitol riot sentencings 78294

Now, Pelham is facing a felony charge that could result in years of jail time for allegedly firing a 9mm pistol in the direction of deputies.

The sheriff’s deputies indicated that when they arrived at his house, Pelham sent his young daughter outside before he began firing gunshots.

“After putting the child in the patrol car, Deputy J.W. heard gunshots coming from inside the residence,” according to the newly revealed charging documents. “Deputy J.W. reported that the gunshots were spread out in time and that they were not towards the HCSO personnel. Deputy J.W. moved his patrol car away from the front of the residence for additional safety.”

The deputy who first said he shielded Pelham’s daughter arrived at about 8:40 p.m. An hour later, according to the filings, Pelham’s father arrived on the scene and another shot was fired.

“[T]he bullet from this gunshot came in so close proximity to myself that I could hear the distinct whistling sound as the bullet traveled by me and then strike a metal object to my right side,” one of the deputies, identified only as J.W., reported.

An FBI agent arrived on the scene at about 10:40 p.m. to help put Pelham under arrest. He said he heard another six to seven gunshots fired.

The court documents indicate that Pelham has a 2003 Texas felony conviction, which barred him from being in possession of a firearm.

  • The Bidens made $579K last year, and paid a 23.8 percent tax rate, their returns show

The Bidens made $579K last year, and paid a 23.8 percent tax rate, their returns show

    [ad_1]

    biden 46157

The numbers closely mirrored those from last year, when the Bidens reported paying $150,439 in federal income taxes on $610,702 for an effective tax rate of 24.6 percent.

White House officials again released copies of the first family’s tax returns on Tax Day as a demonstration of transparency. Former President Donald Trump had refused to do so while in office and during the 2016 presidential campaign, claiming repeatedly that he was under government audit. With the release of their 2022 taxes, Biden has shared 25 years worth of tax returns that include his years as vice president and an earlier presidential run, according to the White House.

Much of the couple’s income was via the president’s $400,000 salary. Jill Biden was paid $82,335 for her teaching position at Northern Virginia Community College.

The Bidens, who filed their returns jointly, also reported paying $29,023 in state income tax in Delaware, where they have two homes. The first lady reported paying $3,139 in Virginia income tax.

The Bidens hit the $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions, called SALT, a product of Trump’s tax law and derided by Democrats in high-cost states. They also paid more than $2,000 in additional federal taxes imposed by the Affordable Care Act.

Other charitable donations include $4,000 to Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors; $2,000 to the Fraternal Order of Police Foundation; $1,680 to St. Joseph on the Brandywine (the Bidens’ home parish); $1,125 to Westminster Presbyterian Church; $1,000 each to Cranston Heights Fire Company and Ministry of Caring.

Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, second gentleman Doug Emhoff, paid $93,570 in federal income taxes last year, with an effective tax rate of 20.5 percent.

Their combined federal earnings were $456,918, including Harris’ vice presidential salary and a reported $169,665 from Georgetown University, where Emhoff, an intellectual property and business lawyer, joined the Law Center’s teaching ranks in January 2021.

The couple paid $17,612 in California income taxes, and Emhoff paid $9,697 in District of Columbia income tax.

The couple contributed $23,000 to charity during the year. They owed $611 to the IRS.

The income figures for Harris and Emhoff were far below what they reported in prior years when Emhoff was still practicing law. When Harris campaigned for president in 2019, they released 15 years of tax returns, including earning about $2 million in 2018.

  • BJP leaders fail to show guts to speak truth over Mhadei issue: Goa Congress

BJP leaders fail to show guts to speak truth over Mhadei issue: Goa Congress

    [ad_1]

Panaji: Hitting out at the BJP, the Goa Congress on Sunday said that leaders of the saffron party, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, “failed to show the guts to speak truth over Mhadei issue” in front of people of the coastal state.

“Today none of the BJP leaders dared to speak over the Mhadei issue during Amit Shah’s public meeting (in South Goa). However, Shah tried to divert the issue by boasting of state schemes, which always remains unfulfilled,” said Chairman of Goa Congress Media Cell Amarnath Panjikar.

Referring to Shah’s remarks, during a public rally in Karnataka’s Belagavi in January, that the Centre “has resolved the long dispute between Goa and Karnataka over Mhadei and allowed the diversion of Mhadei to Karnataka to satisfy the thirst of farmers of many districts”, Panjikar said: “Pramod Sawant and other leaders of the BJP had got a good opportunity to clarify this issue, in the presence of Amit Shah.”

    MS Education Academy

Recently, Goa BJP President Sadanand Shet Tanavade has said that BJP leaders have “guts to tell even the media in Karnataka that the Goa government will not compromise on the Mhadei river issue”. On this, Panjikar said, “Forget about speaking in front of the media in Karnataka, the state BJP leaders even failed to make a statement in Goa itself.”

“BJP has today proved that it is ‘masters of U-turn’ and doesn’t have guts to face the public on Mhadei issue. They only know how to suppress voice of people who seek justice against their dictatorship. Today all Goans have come to know the real fake face of BJP leaders,” he said.

  • IMF stands its ground, refuses to show any flexibility towards Pakistan

IMF stands its ground, refuses to show any flexibility towards Pakistan

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: The International Monetary Fund (IMF), Pakistan’s only hope for a bailout from its crippling economic conditions and looming threats of a meltdown, does not seem to be ready to show any restraint in its demands and expectations from the current Shehbaz Sharif government, as it snubbed Islamabad’s recent request to show flexibility and go ahead with the signing of the staff-level agreement.

In the most recent development, Pakistan’s Finance Minister Ishaq Dar had a virtual meeting with the IMF’s Director for the Middle East and Central Asia Jihad Azour, where he requested the IMF Director to show flexibility and consideration towards Pakistan and sign the staff-level agreement.

However, Dar’s desire could not be fulfilled as he failed to convince the IMF Director to give him a date of the agreement, despite the existing dangerous and constantly worsening economic crisis in the country.

    MS Education Academy

As per details, the IMF Director re-emphasised the issue of petrol subsidy and possible fiscal shortcomings that may trigger because of the implementation of the subsidy plan.

“The minister (Dar) urged the IMF not to raise the issue of petrol subsidy, and objected to the IMF’s approach of seeking clarification about the schemes announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif,” a government source said.

“The Finance Minister also requested the IMF to lower the needed foreign loan requirements by another $1 billion to $5 billion after improvement of the current account deficit,” the source added reminding that the IMF has already cut the requirement by $1 billion to $6 billion last month.

Dar highlighted the steps undertaken by the current government to satisfy and implement the pre-conditions of the IMF, insisting that the delay in the approval of the 9th review of the IMF Extended Funding Facility (EFF) programme to Pakistan, other connected funding from global lenders like the World Bank and other multilateral institutions, have also been withheld, causing major damages to the country’s economic condition.

“The minister informed that all prior actions for 9th review under the Extended Fund Facility have already been completed and government of Pakistan is fully committed to fulfill its obligations as agreed with the IMF,” stated a press release of the Finance Ministry.

But to put Dar’s case to rest, the IMF maintained that all the issues remained unsettled until the deal was ratified by its executive board, irrespective of the fact whether a country met the prior actions before the staff-level agreement or after that.

The IMF hoped that the staff-level agreement would be signed soon, highlighting the need for Pakistan to ensure visible progress on the reforms in the various sectors and complete the IMF programme in time.
