Yarl was released from the hospital Sunday and has since been recovering at home.

The White House said Biden “shared his hope for a swift recovery.”

Attorneys for Yarl’s family, Ben Crump and Lee Merritt, said Biden called Yarl and his family shortly before they learned of the charges being brought against Lester. The president “offered his prayers for Ralph’s health and for justice,” they said in a statement Monday evening.

“Gun violence against unarmed Black individuals must stop,” the lawyers said. “Our children should feel safe, not as though they are being hunted. While this is certainly a step in the right direction, we will continue to fight for Ralph while he works toward a full recovery.”

Vice President Kamala Harris voiced outrage over the shooting.

“Doug and I are praying for Ralph Yarl and his family as he fights for his life,” Harris wrote on Twitter on Monday. “Let’s be clear: No child should ever live in fear of being shot for ringing the wrong doorbell. Every child deserves to be safe. That’s the America we are fighting for.”

In the aftermath of the incident, UP Police also conducted a flag march in Lucknow’s Husainabad.

    MS Education Academy

Police were also seen patrolling in Mathura.

According to UP police officials, security has been beefed up in various districts after the incident.
Police also conducted a patrol in Ayodhya, officials informed.

Uttar Pradesh Government on Sunday imposed Section 144 of CrPC in all the districts, in the aftermath of Atiq Ahmed, Ashraf Ahmed being shot dead in Prayagraj, officials informed.

“After the simultaneous killing of mafia Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf, police will be deployed in Prayagraj, especially the old areas of the city,” police officials informed.

UP Police officials also mentioned that a Rapid Action force is being deployed in the Prayagraj to maintain high security.

In view of the tension, we have increased vigilance,” the official said.

“Rapid Action Force has been called. Police are arranging security by dividing Prayagraj city into several zones,” he added.

Days after Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad was killed in an encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi, the mafia-turned-politician and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were killed on Saturday while being taken for a medical in Prayagraj.

Atiq Ahmed was accused in the 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case and also in the Umesh Pal murder case which happened in February this year.

UP Police so far has arrested a total of 3 shooters in this incident.

In the aftermath of the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter.

“CM Yogi immediately called a high-level meeting and ordered a high-level inquiry into the whole matter. Chief Minister also gave instructions for the formation of a three-member Judicial Commission (Judicial Inquiry Commission) in the matter,” officials said.

Reacting sharply to the incident, AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that this incident is a perfect example of the Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi’s failure on law and order system in the state.

Asaduddin Owaisi took to Twitter and said,” Atiq and his brother were in police custody. He was handcuffed. JSR slogans were also raised. The killing of both is the failure of Yogi’s law and order system. Those celebrating encounter Raj are also responsible for this murder”.

Oppn leaders target UP govt after Atiq Ahmad, brother shot dead

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Opposition leaders on Saturday questioned the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh and demanded that the state government be dismissed after gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were shot dead in Prayagraj.

The “cold-blooded” killings are the “height of anarchy” in Uttar Pradesh, BSP MP Danish Ali claimed.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said crime has reached its peak in Uttar Pradesh and criminals are unfazed.

    MS Education Academy

Ahmad (60) and Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college here for a checkup.

The brothers, both jailed in Prayagraj, were in handcuffs when they were killed in full view of camera crews around 10 pm. The horrifying visuals were circulated widely on social media platforms and television channels.

Reacting to the incident, SP president Akhilesh Yadav said in a tweet in Hindi: “Crime has reached its peak in Uttar Pradesh and the criminals are unfazed. When someone can be shot dead amidst a police cordon, then what about the safety of the general public? An atmosphere of fear is being created among the public due to this and it seems that some people are deliberately creating such an atmosphere.”

Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary asked if ‘jungle raj’ prevails in the state.

“Nobody is sympathising with Atiq Ahmad because a criminal should be punished. But anyone who will see this video will question if we are a democracy. Every criminal has the right to be heard in court and be convicted there. But you can see they were killed in police custody in the open,” he said.

He further said, “The chief minister should answer what kind of law and order he has established in the state. Is this not jungle raj and a ground to call for emergency rule in UP?”

Video footage showed a man thrusting a gun at Ahmad’s head as he talks to reporters and the former SP MP collapsing. The footage also showed the three assailants firing at Ahmad and Ashraf even after they had fallen.

The bullet-riddled bodies of Ahmad and Ashraf were taken away from the spot as tension gripped the area after the sensational killings.

In a tweet, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal said, “Two murders in UP: 1) Atiq Ahmed and brother Ashraf 2) Rule of law.”

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP from Amroha Danish Ali said the “cold-blooded” murder of Ahmad and his brother is the “height of anarchy” in Uttar Pradesh.

“This can’t happen without a go-ahead from the top. In any other democracy the state government must have been dismissed for such a heinous crime against the rule of law,” he said in a tweet.

The three assailants who fired at Ahmad and Ashraf were arrested immediately after the incident.

In a tweet in Hindi, Uttar Pradesh minister Swatantra Dev Singh said, “Sins and virtue are accounted for in this birth…”

The tragic end of Ahmad and his brother came on a day the ex-MP’s son Asad, who was killed in a police encounter in Jhansi on April 13, was buried in Prayagraj.

Ahmad and his brother were brought to Prayagraj for a court hearing in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case and were remanded in police custody.

Umesh Pal, a key witness in the murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal, and his two police security guards were shot dead outside his Dhoomanganj residence here on February 24.

Based on a complaint lodged by Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered on February 25 against Ahmad, Ashraf, Ahmad’s wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, and nine others.

  • Tennessee Democrats see a ‘once in a lifetime’ shot at relevance

Tennessee Democrats see a ‘once in a lifetime’ shot at relevance

    [ad_1]

    tennessee lawmakers expulsion 34627

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that we have to take advantage of,” state Sen. London Lamar, a Democrat who represents parts of Memphis, said in an interview.

A blue turnaround in Tennessee seemed like a pipe dream just a few weeks ago — and maybe still does. Democrats are outnumbered, out-resourced and hamstrung by a legislative map drawn to favor Republicans. It’s also a state that suffers from one of the lowest voter turnouts in the country.

Party insiders and organizers are the first to concede just how bad they have it.

“Nothing changes the fact that these districts are highly gerrymandered,” said Lisa Quigley, a former chief of staff to Rep. Jim Cooper, a Tennessee Democrat who didn’t seek reelection after his district was effectively eliminated in redistricting last year. “It’s going to take some really smart organizing all over the state, because none of us vote very well.”

But if there was ever a moment when the party stood a chance, it’s now. The state Democratic Party has been flooded with donations and interest since the GOP started moving against three Democrats for participating in a gun safety protest on the state House floor, and ultimately expelling two of them last week for violating decorum rules. Their stunt angered Republicans who wanted to see them promptly punished, invoking a rare removal process marked by its partisanship and accusations of racism.

Former Gov. Phil Bredesen, the last Democrat to hold statewide office in Tennessee, called the GOP vote “a great overreaction.”

“I always thought one of the principles of leadership is to be careful. You can have fights, but don’t make martyrs,” Bredesen, who served until 2011, said in an interview. “Apparently Republicans missed that concept.”

Most Republicans have avoided commenting on the spectacle outside of last week’s removal proceedings, where they admonished the Democrats for disrupting the process. House Speaker Cameron Sexton, during a radio interview, called the floor protest to an “insurrection” akin to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“Their actions are and will always be unacceptable, and they break several rules of decorum and procedure on the House floor,” Sexton said on Twitter early last week. “Their actions and beliefs that they could be arrested on the House floor were an effort, unfortunately, to make themselves the victims.”

Sexton, a longtime lawmaker believed to have aspirations for governor, has not tweeted since.

On the day that state Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, two Black millennial freshmen, were kicked out of the Legislature, 33,000 people called into the state party office looking to get involved, Democratic Party Chair Hendrell Remus said. So far, nearly 10,000 have signed up to volunteer, he said in an interview, and hundreds of people have expressed interest in running for office — many in districts where Republican lawmakers ran unopposed in the midterms. More than half of Republican lawmakers serving in the statehouse today were uncontested in November.

Democrats are targeting a handful of competitive districts where they believe strong candidates can pick off Republican incumbents. Those include the newly drawn 5th Congressional District encompassing parts of Nashville, which Rep. Andy Ogles won last year.

They have their eye on state legislative districts outside Memphis, Knoxville and Clarksville. Long term, the party sees opportunities around the southern suburbs of Nashville in Rutherford County.

Democrats are also placing their hopes on winning a lawsuit challenging the new redistricting maps, where they say a victory would create much-needed political openings.

“Had we not been gerrymandered to shreds, then this supermajority couldn’t have existed to be able to expel our members,” Remus said.

Jones triumphantly returned to the Legislature on Tuesday, leading a march of more than 1,000 people to the Capitol steps after being reinstated by the Nashville city council. Pearson is expected to be reinstated to his seat on Wednesday and return to work the following day.

Jones, Pearson and Rep. Gloria Johnson, the third Democratic lawmaker who participated in the same floor protest but escaped expulsion by a single vote, together represent a new class of elected officials in Tennessee. They’ve come from activist circles and push progressive causes like criminal justice reform, gun safety and climate change. Organizers are aiming to recruit more candidates in that model.

“They are the least favorable Democrats in the House and they have created the most change and impact for being themselves,” said Tequila Johnson, executive director for the Equity Alliance, a grassroots group focused on increasing civic engagement in Black communities.

After his return to the Legislature on Tuesday, Jones thanked Republicans for “awakening the people of this state,” particularly young people.

“No expulsion, no attempt to silence us will stop us but only galvanize and strengthen our movement,” Jones said to loud cheers from his supporters packing the galleries.

  • UP: 2 houses set on fire after 24-year-old shot dead in Meerut

UP: 2 houses set on fire after 24-year-old shot dead in Meerut

    [ad_1]

Meerut: Two houses were set on fire a day after a 24-year-old man was shot dead in Palda village in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut.

The incident has led to communal tension in the area.

In view of the situation, a heavy police force has been deployed in and around the village to control the situation.

    MS Education Academy

SP (Rural) Kamlesh Bahadur said that four people have been arrested for their involvement in killing one Vishu on Sunday evening. Raids are being conducted to nab the other accused.

The senior cop is camping in the village along with the police team. He said that timely intervention of police prevented situation from deteriorating.

“A case has been lodged against five people. The situation is under control,” said the SP.

Earlier, two unidentified motorcycle-borne criminals shot dead Vishu on Sunday evening. His murder created an uproar in the village and the family members accused members of the minority community behind the murder.

The victim’s kin accused that Vishu had a confrontation with some Muslim youths during Holi and his killing was a fallout of that altercation.

The tension escalated further when his body was brought in the village on Monday after a post-mortem.

A group of angry villagers attacked the houses of two of the accused and set them on fire.

Subsequently, SSP Meerut Rohit Kumar Sajwan and SP (rural) Kamlesh Bahadur rushed to the village along with a heavy force and pacified the situation.

  • When Moscow Shot Americans Out of the Sky

When Moscow Shot Americans Out of the Sky

    [ad_1]

    r1a0957

These difficult, hair-raising flights, manned entirely by volunteers, were not for the faint-hearted. “Crews were jammed into cramped compartments where they huddled over radar screens and electronic monitoring devices,” wrote air force historian Paul Glenshaw in a 2017 Air & Space Magazine article. The purpose of these dangerous missions was to trigger enemy radar installations so as to confirm their location.

Moscow was also lying. The Kremlin knew — or had to know — that the plane its pilots shot down was not a B-29 as it claimed, but had been converted from the much smaller B-24. The massive silhouette of the B-29 Superfortress, the same heavy bomber that had dropped the first atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was completely different from the medium-sized B-24 Liberator upon which the Privateer was based. Moreover, the Soviets themselves actually possessed a number of B-29s that had been forced to land on their territory.

Even more ridiculous was the charge that the “Turtle” had fired at the Soviets: Like all spy planes, the Privateer had deliberately been stripped of ordnance. The only weapon on board, according to Glenshaw, was the .38 caliber belonging to the pilot, Lieutenant Commander John Fette.

Another point of disagreement was the exact location of the aerial confrontation, which Washington insisted took place in international waters. Back and forth went the dueling statements, much like the ones that the two sides recently exchanged after the crash of the U.S. drone over the Black Sea, with Washington declaring that the downed drone was in international air space, which Moscow denied.

The only thing that was and is still clear, is that something went badly wrong — at least from the U.S. Air Force’s point of view. For his part, Stalin was so pleased by the performance of both the radar men who detected the U.S. spy plane and the pilots who blew it out of the skies that he awarded them medals — just as their successors who crashed the U.S. drone last month were.

And so the increasingly frustrating search for the U.S. craft continued. On April 15, a week after the incident, searchers spotted a lifeboat from the Privateer, pointing to the probability that the aircraft had not broken up, but had made a soft landing. Ten days later, on April 25, the captain of a Swedish fishing vessel found an airplane wheel in its net. The wheel, identified as the nose wheel of a Privateer, had been pierced by a machine gun bullet.

Still no sign of the captain, John Fette, and his crew.

By then Fette and his nine men had been declared missing in action, and their shocked and puzzled families, who had been in the dark about the missing flight, had been notified.

That same day, Navy Secretary Francis Matthews, at the joint behest of President Harry Truman and Congress, awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross to Fette and his men “for performing assigned tasks with courage and skills on a peacetime mission,” while maintaining discreet silence about the actual nature of that mission.

The Kremlin, anxious to make maximum propaganda use of the episode, certainly wasn’t discreet — possibly on the basis of new evidence it had uncovered during its parallel search — asserting that the Privateer’s objective had been “photographing [Soviet] defense installations.” Which could be true.

Which might not have been far off the mark. Had the Soviets recovered some incriminating flotsam from the fallen plane?

And, incidentally, what happened to the men themselves? Had the Russians captured some of the crew, as rumors and reports by persons formerly detained in the Soviet gulags suggested? The State Department reportedly sent a pointed demarche to Moscow about the matter in 1956, as a 1992 report by the Department of Defense POW/MIA department notes. There is no reliable evidence that any of the men survived the crash or were taken prisoner. Nevertheless, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency has not closed its books on the incident.

Whatever happened out there in the skies over the Baltic near Liepāja, a dangerous line had been crossed. A new war — a “cold war,” including a low-key but very real shooting war, was on, as Navy Secretary Matthews told a meeting of the Manhattan chapter of the Reserve Officers Association on April 24, the night before the men of the Turbulent Turtle were posthumously decorated, according to the New York Times. Soon the press would stop using the quotes around “cold war” and begin capitalizing it.

The Cold War would continue for 50 years. And there would be more casualties. U.S. spy planes would continue to be shot down. The most famous incident, of course, was the May 1960 shootdown by Soviet anti-aircraft missiles of the high altitude U2 spy plane piloted by Gary Powers.

Powers was fortunate. He survived his shootdown and was eventually repatriated. But most of the American airmen who were shot down by increasingly effective Soviet air defenses were not so fortunate — nor were their families. All in all, an estimated 200 men, including the men of the Turbulent Turtle, went down with their spy craft in this all-but-forgotten theater of the Cold War, which ended with the break-up of the USSR in 1991, when the former so-called Latvian Socialist Social Republic regained its independence.

Hyderabad: 26-year-old man shot dead at Tappachabutra

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Sensation prevailed in the Tappachabutra area late Tuesday night after a person was shot dead by his rivals. Police suspect that old enmity was behind the gruesome crime.

The incident took place at Topkhana near Shabab Hotel in Karwan after a group of assailants identified as Kranti and others suddenly started firing at 26-year-old Akash Singh, also known as Chotu, resulting in instant death.

During the incident, the attackers fired multiple shots at Akash Singh and fled from the crime scene. On receiving information, a team of police, along with the CLUES team, reached the spot. It is suspected that homemade weapons might have been used in the crime.

    MS Education Academy

As per the preliminary investigation by the police, Akash Singh, aka Chotu, had earlier attacked his relative Kranti, upon which an attempt to murder was registered against him, and the same is pending for trial before the court.

On Tuesday night, Kranti contacted a common friend, Imran, a resident of the Topekhana area in Karwan, to facilitate a compromise with Akash Singh. Later, Imran called Akash to his residence, and meanwhile, Kranti and his associates also reached there.

Under the pretext of compromise, Kranti suddenly took out a weapon and fired multiple rounds at Akash Singh, and during this, he died on the spot. Later, the assailants fled from the scene.

“We have gathered information that there were multiple shots fired at the deceased, and we are investigating from all angles,” said DCP South West Zone, Kiran Khare. He said the dead body has been shifted to Osmania General Hospital mortuary for conducting postmortem.

Later, additional forces reached the spot, and the mob was dispersed.
