Biden renews push to ban assault weapons in wake of Nashville shooting

“I came down because I heard there was chocolate chip ice cream,” Biden said. His speech quickly shifted to calling on Congress to ban assault weapons in the wake of the shooting.

Three adults and three children were confirmed dead following a mass shooting Monday morning at The Covenant School, a private Christian school in Nashville.

The 28-year-old female suspect, who has not been identified, was killed in an altercation with police. The woman had at least two semi-automatic rifles and a handgun, police said.

Biden called the shooting “heartbreaking” and a “family’s worst nightmare.”

“We have to do more to stop gun violence; it’s ripping our communities apart — ripping the soul of this nation,” Biden said. “And we have to do more to protect our schools, so they aren’t turned into prisons.”

Biden has focused on reinstating the assault weapons ban that he helped pass in 1994 as senator, but which lapsed in 2004. The president doesn’t appear to have the votes for an assault weapons ban in Congress.

“How many more children have to be murdered before Republicans in Congress will step up and act to pass the assault weapons ban,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday.

At an event in Washington on Monday, first lady Jill Biden also spoke about the shooting.

“I am truly without words. Our children deserve better. We stand, all of us, we stand with Nashville in prayer,” Jill Biden said.

2 Israeli soldiers wounded in West Bank drive-by shooting

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: Two Israeli soldiers were injured in a drive-by shooting attack in the West Bank, the Israeli military announced.

The shooting attack occurred on Saturday evening in the village of Huwara, which in recent weeks has become a flashpoint of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

According to a statement from the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), one of the soldiers was severely injured and the other suffered moderate wounds. Both were evacuated to a hospital in central Israel, Xinhua news agency reported.

The statement said roadblocks have been set up in the northern West Bank to find the perpetrators. There was no claim of responsibility from any Palestinian militant organisation.

The latest incident comes amid continued tensions between Israelis and Palestinians. According to official figures from both sides, about 90 Palestinians have been killed since the beginning of the year and 15 Israelis have been killed.

In response to attacks, the Israeli military has increased its incursions into the West Bank in recent months, increasing the friction.

Israeli media reported that Defence Minister Yoav Gallant will be holding security consultations on Saturday night with senior military commanders in order to discuss the ramifications of the continued tensions.

The shooting comes during the Muslim month of Ramadan and ahead of the Jewish holiday of Passover, a time in which there are growing fears of further escalation.

Israeli American wounded in West Bank shooting, gunman caught

    [ad_1]

Tel Aviv: In yet another terror attack in the West Bank town of Huwara, an Israeli, former US Marine was shot and seriously wounded, Times of Israel reported.

According to the Times of Israel, the gunman was detained after a brief chase.

The victim, 40s, was named David Stern from the settlement of Itamar, a former US Marine who works as a weapons instructor. US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides confirmed that Stern is also an American citizen.

As per the Times of Israel, the gunman was earlier shot by the victim as well as by the officers but he somehow fled away from the scene.

The makeshift “Carlo” submachine gun used in the attack, which the terrorist apparently dropped while fleeing, was also seized.

The gunman was taken by military medics for treatment at a hospital before he was to be handed over to the Shin Bet for questioning, reported Times of Israel.

Palestinian media named him as Laith Nadim Nassar, from the nearby village of Madama, south of Nablus.

The west bank is slowly and gradually becoming the hub of the terror attack. A similar incident took place on Thursday in West Bank where 4 Palestinians were killed and 23 others were wounded in Jenin, CNN reported.

The Health Ministry stated that five of those injured are in critical condition.

However, the Israeli security forces said that those neutralized were suspected of terrorist activity.

In a statement, the Israeli security forces said they “neutralized two operatives of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist organization who are suspected of significant terrorist activity.” A third person “was neutralized after he tried to attack the fighters with an iron crowbar,” the statement added, CNN reported.

During the operation, armed persons fired at the forces, and casualties were seen as a result.

Hamas announced in a statement that two of the Palestinians killed in Jenin were its members, according to CNN.

“The cowardly assassination of two leaders of the resistance will not go unpunished. The occupation has tried us before, knows for sure that our response is coming and that the march of the resistance continues until liberation,” the Hamas statement read.

Hamas, a Palestinian Sunni-Islamic fundamentalist, militant, and nationalist organization, which took control of the Gaza Strip by removing the Fattah officials. It resulted in the change in powers and the de facto division of the Palestinian territories into two entities, the West Bank governed by the Palestinian National Authority, and Gaza governed by Hamas.

  • Biden mourns with families of California shooting victims and moves to close gun loophole

Biden mourns with families of California shooting victims and moves to close gun loophole

    [ad_1]

    biden guns 46756

His remarks framed what the White House portrayed as a significant advance in gun safety, an executive order intended to move the U.S. as close to universal background checks as possible without additional legislation.

The executive action directs Attorney General Merrick Garland to close a gray area in existing gun sales laws that have allowed some vendors to operate without conducting background checks. The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which Biden signed into law last summer, requires anyone who sells firearms for profit to run background checks. Garland will be tasked with defining who qualifies as a gun dealer.

“It’s just common sense to check whether someone is a felon, a domestic abuser before they buy a gun,” Biden said.

Among other directives, the executive order asked Biden’s Cabinet to focus on public awareness campaigns around red flag laws and safe gun storage and encouraged the Federal Trade Commission to publish a report on how manufacturers market firearms to adults and minors. The action also calls for his administration to speed up the implementation of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

The president’s move comes as state leaders renewed calls for federal action amid a violent start to 2023, which has already witnessed 164 victims in 110 mass shootings — incidents where at least four people are shot.

“I know what it’s like to get that call,” Biden told the crowd on Tuesday. “… I know what it’s like to lose a loved one so suddenly. It’s like losing a piece of your soul.”

While the White House has made historic strides on gun policy, the flurry of mass shootings this year has spurred a renewed pressure campaign from gun safety advocates. Now with a split Congress, gun safety groups have said Biden has a responsibility to roll out further reform. Advocates have pushed administration officials on Tuesday’s executive order for months.

Biden used his speech to re-up his calls for lawmakers to take further action on gun violence.

“Let’s be clear: None of this absolves Congress from the responsibility of acting,” he said. “Pass universal background checks. Eliminate gun manufacturer immunity and liability. And I’m determined, once again, to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines.”

Two of the three deadliest mass shootings this year have taken place in California, according to the Gun Violence Archive, despite the state having some of the country’s strictest firearm policies and a gun death rate 37 percent below the national average. Just days after the Monterey Park shooting, a disgruntled worker killed seven people at a mushroom farm in rural Half Moon Bay.

In the case of the Monterey Park shooting, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna has said the semi-automatic handgun used by the 72-year-old gunman was most likely acquired illegally.

State leaders nationally have also said more needs to be done at the federal level in light of a Supreme Court ruling in June that struck down New York’s concealed carry law. That has given rise to subsequent challenges to state gun laws, including California’s longstanding ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and a provision barring 18-to-20-year-olds from buying semi automatic weapons.

After Tuesday’s speech, Biden was scheduled to meet with first responders and victims’ families as he has done so many times before in the wake of a mass tragedy. He’ll once again be surrounded by immense grief, just as he was in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, N.Y., less than a year ago.

But he ended Tuesday’s remarks with a line of hope. It’s a piece of advice he’s shared with other survivors and family members along the way — something he draws from his own experiences with grief.

“It takes time, but I promise you,” Biden said. “I promise you, the day will come when the memory of your loved one will bring a smile to your lips before it brings a tear to your eye.”

Several killed in Hamburg shooting at Jehovah’s Witness hall

    [ad_1]

Multiple people were killed and others seriously injured in a shooting at a Jehovah’s Witness hall Thursday night in Hamburg, according to police.

“We assume that there is one perpetrator,” the police said in a statement Friday morning.

Police said they received reports of the shooting at about 9 p.m. local time in the northern harbor city, where Chancellor Olaf Scholz previously served as mayor and his predecessor Angela Merkel was born. Local media reported that either six or seven people were killed during an event for Jehovah’s Witnesses. A shot was fired after officers arrived on the scene and a fatally injured person was found on an upper floor of the building who may have been the shooter, though this is still not certain, according to reports.

Police said on Twitter that the motivation for the attack is still under investigation and urged people not to spread rumors online.

Authorities initially sent a warning advising locals to avoid the area and remain indoors temporarily.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote on Twitter Friday morning, “Bad news from Hamburg. Several members of a Jehovah congregation fell victim to a brutal act of violence last night. My thoughts are with them and their loved ones. And with the security forces who have had a tough assignment.”

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said an investigation into the attack was going “at full speed.”

Hamburg Mayor Peter Tschentscher called the news “shocking,” saying: “My deepest sympathies are with the relatives of the victims,” Tschentscher tweeted. “Emergency services are working intensively to trace the perpetrator(s) and clarify the background.”
