Mumbai Shocker: Cop forces rape victim to walk 2 km for medical test

Mumbai: In a shocking incident, a Dalit woman lawyer – who had complained of rape, black magic practices and domestic violence by her in-laws and others – was allegedly made to walk around 2 km by a lady constable for her medical examination at a government hospital, her lawyer said here on Tuesday.

The victim had lodged complaint of rape against her NRI husband, a tantrik, her brothers-in-law and other relatives for allegedly subjecting her to repeated rape, torture and other forms of abuse since her marriage, said Advocate Nitin Satpute.

Even her complaint was registered by the Bhoiwada Police a few days ago, but only after making a lot of efforts, and she was scheduled for a medical examination at the KEM Hospital in Parel on Tuesday, he said.

“A lady constable asked her for the taxi fare, which the victim woman, a lawyer practising at the Bombay High Court, did not have. So the lady constable made her walk for 2 km from there to the BMC’s KEM Hospital for her medical,” Satpute said.

He wanted to know “where are the Nirbhaya vehicles for such rape victims”, and how could the accused be made to walk for the medical test while the accused are being taken around in police vehicles.

Satpute has brought the matter to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV), Pravin Mundhe, and is awaiting the police response.

Karnataka shocker: Couple fined Rs 6 lakh for inter-caste marriage, face boycott

    [ad_1]

Chamarajanagar: In a shocking development in Karanataka’s Chamarajanagar district, a couple was fined and faced a boycott in their village for their inter-caste marriage.

The incident had taken place at Kunagalli village in Kollegal taluk in the district. According to police, the couple got married five years ago but the villagers came to know about their different castes only recently.

The villagers had fined the couple Rs 6 lakh and boycotted them in the village. The couple were not able to take the humiliation and filed a complaint with police in Kollegal on March 1.

Govindaraju, belonging to the Uppara Setty community, had fallen in love with Shwetha, from Mandya, belonging to the Scheduled Castes. When they decided to get married, the families of the boy and the girl agreed without opposition and their marriage was solemnised in the sub-registrar’s office.

Govindaraju settled in Malavalli, but often came to visit his parents, along with his wife, in Kunagalli. When the couple came there last month, Shwetha, talking to her neighbour, had disclosed that she is a Dalit.

The matter reached the elders of the village and they held a meeting on February 23. They called the parents of the couple and imposed a Rs 3 lakh fine on them and asked them to pay the fine by March 1.

After the couple had lodged a complaint with police against 12 persons of the village in this connection, the elders, after coming to know about the complaint, increased the fine amount to Rs 6 lakh and boycotted Govindaraju’s family from the village.

The villagers have sent the family out of the village and passed a diktat that they should not purchase rations, vegetables, milk, and water from the village.

The authorities have taken up the investigation.

Karnataka Shocker: Unable to pay for iPhone, man kills delivery agent

    [ad_1]

A 20-year-old man in Karnataka has been arrested for allegedly killing and burning the body of a delivery boy from an e-commerce portal. The accused, identified as Hemanth Datta, had ordered an iPhone from Flipkart but was unable to pay for it upon delivery, which led to the horrific incident.

According to police sources, when the delivery boy, identified as Hemanth Naik, arrived at Datta’s residence on February 7, the accused asked him to open the box. However, Naik refused to do so and told him that if he opened it, he would not be able to take it back and asked Datta to pay for the phone. This led to an altercation, and Datta allegedly stabbed Naik to death.

Datta then kept the body at his house for four days before taking it near a railway bridge, pouring kerosene over it, and burning it at an isolated place. Naik’s brother filed a missing complaint on February 8, and after a friend informed him of a body found near a railway bridge on February 16, he approached the police again and filed another complaint.

The police registered a murder case and started tracking Naik’s mobile phone, which was last located at Datta’s residence. Upon raiding Datta’s house, they found Naik’s mobile phone and other articles, leading to the arrest of the accused.

    Flipkart’s reaction to the murder

Flipkart has issued a statement expressing their shock and sadness at the incident and has assured that they will provide full cooperation to the authorities in the investigation. The company has also urged its customers to treat delivery personnel with respect and ensure their safety.

  • Retail inflation at 6.5 percent in January, worrisome, shocker: Economists

Retail inflation at 6.5 percent in January, worrisome, shocker: Economists

    [ad_1]

Chennai: In a shocker, consumer price index (CPI) inflation touched 6.5 per cent in January, the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation said on Monday, after being 5.72 per cent in December and 5.88 per cent in November last year, and economists termed it “worrisome”.

“CPI inflation moved to 6.5 per cent in January is higher than our expectations and is worrisome. Sequentially, inflation has snapped a two-month contractionary streak as food inflation and core inflation remained firm,” Rajani Sinha, Chief Economist, CARE Ratings told IANS.

“Today’s inflation shocker led by food as well as consistently higher core inflation momentum has depicted we are far from the ‘durable disinflation’ process,” said Madhavi Arora, Lead Economist, Emkay Global Financial Services.

Sinha said while vegetable prices contracted for the third straight month, the momentum was not strong enough to counter the sharp rise in essentials such as cereals, meat, fish, milk, and eggs.

“The contribution of food inflation to overall inflation rose to 44 per cent in January from 37 per cent in December. Meanwhile, core inflation has remained sticky at 6.3 per cent as inflation for housing, personal care and healthcare moved higher,” she added.

According to Sinha, going forward, the sticky core inflation will remain a concern though the average CPI inflation is expected to moderate to 5.1 per cent in FY24 on the back of softening prices of cereals and pulses.

The monetary policy tightening so far, and some fizzling of pent-up demand should also help ease CPI inflation.

“This upside inflation surprise comes after RBI revised down its 4QFY23 CPI forecast by 20bps in the last MPC policy. This shows how uncertain the inflation trajectory can get, for even near-term estimates and possibly explains why they maintained the current stance of withdrawal of accommodation to keep policy flexibility ahead,” Arora said.

According to her, 4QFY23 inflation may now be possibly 50 bps higher than the RBI’s revised estimate and could also force the RBI to further tighten their stance ahead.

“From the policy perspective, we believe that further rate hikes are unlikely. However, we need to be cautious as RBI (Reserve Bank of India) has left the window open for possibility of another rate hike in case of a sustained rise in inflation,” Sinha said.
