Hubbali: Congress workers in Karnataka’s Hubbali are upbeat as former party chief Sonia Gandhi will reach the city in Saturday to campaign for former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and all other candidates in Dharwad district.

A heavy contingent of police is deployed at Hubbali as Sonia Gandhi is an SPG protectee. More than 3000 policemen are deployed at various points in Hubbali and the ground where she will speak is taken over by the SPG.

According to Congress leadership, Gandhi will speak at the Young Stars Sports Ground in Hubbali at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders will be present at the rally. Congress candidates in all the seven constituencies of Dharwad will also participate.

Hubbali, according to Congress camp, is the only place where Gandhi is campaigning in the state for the May 10 elections.

The seriousness Congress has given to the candidature of Shettar is clear from Sonia Gandhi herself reaching Hubbali for campaigning.

Talking to IANS, local Congress leader Ismail Sait said: “Jagadish Shettar was a secular leader even when he was in the BJP and the presence of former Congress President, Sonia Gandhi for the election campaign is an important gesture on how Congress treats Jagadish Shettar.”

He also said that the Muslim community would vote in totality for Shettar.

The Congress is expecting to wrest a few seats in Dharwad district which has been a strong bastion of the BJP.

  • Karnataka: ‘Not good to remove’, says Shettar on Modi, Shah’s photos in office

Karnataka: ‘Not good to remove’, says Shettar on Modi, Shah’s photos in office

    [ad_1]

Hubbali: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar — contesting on a Congress ticket hoping to reclaim his lost self-respect– still has photos of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah hanging on a wall in his home office and says it is not good to remove them.

The photos adorn the wall although he is hurt the BJP chose not to pick him for the May 10 assembly elections.

Having represented Hubli-Dharwad Central since 1994 on a BJP ticket, Shettar, however, claimed the saffron party had no “address” earlier there and that he built it since then, making it a “Shettar vs Congress” battle ever since.

    MS Education Academy

After severing his decades-old ties with the saffron party, Shettar now in the last leg of his political career puts a Congress flag on his car and sets out for campaigning along with the party workers.

Trying to put the past aside, Shettar is meeting supporters and party workers at his home office sitting on his regular sofa with two photos of Modi and Shah still hung on the wall behind.

In an interview with PTI while being seated on the same chair, Shettar asked, “What is so surprising about it,” when queried why he has not removed the photos after exiting BJP.

He said: “Immediately after shifting from one party to another, removing photos of earlier leaders is not a good thing. I cannot do that.”

In the past, Shettar and his wife have said several times they have respect for Modi and Shah.

Stating this would be his last assembly election, the six-time MLA said, “This election is a fight for my self-respect, not for political aspirations. As my self-respect was damaged, I joined the Congress for my own peace without putting conditions,” he added.

BJP should have given an honourable exit for him by fielding him from here for the last time. “It did not happen due to General Secretary (Organisation) B L Santhosh who pushed for a ticket for his close associate and did all this drama,” he claimed.

Shettar further said the poll ticket was denied also because there was apprehension he may claim the number one position among Lingayats after former chief minister B S Yediyurappa.

Asked if he was facing difficulty in convincing voters as a Congress candidate now, he admitted facing some “embarrassment” in the beginning. Gradually, voters are realising when told he was denied a BJP ticket without any reason.

“Nobody knows why I was denied a ticket despite having popularity, age, no criminal background and no corruption/CDs. Whereas the BJP has given tickets to 75-year-old people, family members and those who have a criminal background,” he said.
Shettar mentioned he was receiving a positive public response so far and added, “I have still maintained popularity because of pro-development works. There is no anti-incumbency. I am confident of winning with a thumping majority this time.”

He said there is a “miscommunication” that he won in the last six consecutive elections with the support of BJP workers and Marathas.

Shettar shared that he first contested on a BJP ticket in 1994 and before that, he nurtured the saffron party for three years. Then he became president of a party unit and later the state chief.

Asserting the BJP did not have an “address” here, he said prior to 1994, the saffron party did not have any existence in the region and that its candidates had lost their deposits. “I built the party and it has always been — Shettar versus Congress.”

The former chief minister also said he was not “power hungry” and if he was then he would have become a minister in the Basavaraj Bommai-led cabinet.

“Bommai is junior to me in politics. Immediately after his swearing-in as CM, I did not join the cabinet. I have been working as an MLA for the last two years.”

On JD(S) leader C M Ibrahim’s demand to probe Shettar’s properties in and around Hubbali, he said, “I have not constructed any bungalow in Bengaluru.”

“Here also, I have limited property within the legal purview. I am not a political leader worth Rs 1,000 crore. I don’t have crores of transactions. These are all vague allegations.”

Asked if his exit has affected son’s political prospects in the BJP, Shettar said, “I always believe: one family, one power is sufficient..I am not going to insist that my children become my successor. If they have leadership and interest, they can grow.”

With a week left for voting, the Congress leader said his family has taken this election as a personal challenge. “More than me, my wife is working hard in this election. She is campaigning for me door-to-door,” he added.

Bengaluru: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday held a meeting with former Karnataka chief minister Jagadish Shettar — who has switched to the grand old party from the BJP, and other senior party leaders at Dharwad in Karnataka.

The meeting, held at a hotel, was also attended by prominent leaders of the Lingayat community.

During the meeting, Priyanka Gandhi gave a call to ensure Shettar’s victory. He will contest the May 10 Assembly election from Hubli-Dharwad Central constituency.

Notably, Union Home Minister and former BJP president Amit Shah has recently held a series of meetings. The saffron party has deputed its veteran member and former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa to ensure Shettar’s defeat on his home turf “to send a strong message to the defectors”.

A source said that Congress has organised the meeting as the BJP is “trying to draw in Congress leaders to its fold in Dharwad and Hubballi”.

Thousands of people participated in the roadshow of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra later in Kundagol.

Addressing the crowd, she said “if the Congress is voted to power, the life of people would reform”.

“During the regime of BJP, the woes of people were only aggravated,” she said.

“The party has given guarantee cards to every house in Karnataka. We have assured that women heads of families would get Rs 2,000. The schemes such as Anna Bhagya and Ksheera Bhagya would be implemented. Women will get free travel facilities. We will fulfill all assurances,” she said.

The vote should be given to the future of the state. The price rise has affected people. This election will shape the future of young children, she said.

Priyanka Gandhi would address public meetings in Khanapur on Sunday. She is also scheduled to hold a public meeting at Jamakhandi in Bagalkot district as well as in north Karnataka.

The Congress on Wednesday released a list of 40 leaders who would be the party’s star campaigners for the May 10 assembly elections.

Interestingly, Shettar, who crossed over to the Congress a couple of days ago and has been given the party ticket from the Hubli-Dharwad-Central Assembly segment that he currently represents, has been included in the list.

A staunch RSS man, Shettar was part of the Jan Sangh and BJP for several decades before severing his ties with the party upon his candidature being overlooked for the May 10 election and joined Congress on Monday.

‘Forcefully thrown out..’: Ex-Karnataka CM Jagadish Shettar joins Congress

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Senior BJP leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Monday joined the Congress ahead of the May 10 Assembly elections in the state.

He joined the party in the presence of AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, General Secretaries K C Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala (Karnataka in-charge), KPCC president D K Shivakumar and Legislature Party leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, among others.

Shettar on Sunday had resigned as the Hubli-Dharwad (Central) MLA after the BJP denied him the ticket to contest the Assembly polls.

    MS Education Academy

The 67-year old six-time MLA, Shettar was asked by the BJP top brass to make way for others, but he on his part had asserted he wanted to contest one last time.

After joining the Congress, Shettar alleged that he had been humiliated by the BJP by denying him a ticket and that party is today in the control of “very few people.”

“I was forcefully thrown out of the party that I built…I’m joining the Congress by accepting its ideology and principles,” he told reporters.

On his arrival in Bengaluru from Hubballi on Sunday night, Shettar had held discussions with Congress leaders Surjewala, Shivakumar, Siddaramaiah, former minister and campaign committee chief M B Patil and veteran party leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa (Shettar’s relative).

This decision of Shettar, a prominent Lingayat leader from north Karnataka, may adversely impact the BJP’s prospects in a number of segments in the region, according to political observers.

Shettar, a veteran BJP leader whose family has been associated with the party since Jana Sangh days, is an influential leader from its bastion of Kittur Karnataka region. While in the BJP he had served as a Minister, Speaker, Leader of the Opposition and the chief minister.

‘Not decided yet’: Ex-Karnataka CM Jagadish Shettar on joining Congress

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, who resigned as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA on Sunday, said he was yet to decide whether he would join the Congress.

Shettar tendered his resignation as an MLA to Karnataka Assembly Speaker, Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, at Sirsi on Sunday.

On being asked whether he will be joining Congress, the former Karnataka chief minister said, “I have not decided yet.”

    MS Education Academy

Earlier, on Sunday, Shettar said some Karnataka BJP leaders were mishandling the party in the State.

“I am going to tender my resignation as an MLA and will also resign from the primary membership of the party. Later, I will decide my next course of action, whether I have to fight independently or with a party. The ill-treatment and humiliation by the senior leaders of the party have hurt me a lot. My decision (to resign from BJP) is final. Some state leaders are mishandling the BJP system in Karnataka,” Shettar told ANI.

Shettar, a six-time MLA from the constituency, was reportedly advised by the party to stand down and not seek a fresh term as MLA from the Hubli-Dharwad Central segment, following which his followers expressed their anguish against the party’s high command.

On Saturday after announcing his resignation Jagadish Shettar also mentioned that there is a conspiracy against him, which is why he was denied a ticket.

“There is a conspiracy against me, will tell everything after resigning,” Shettar told ANI.

After being left out from the BJP’s candidate lists, Shettar had issued an ultimatum to the party, saying he will consider his future political course if denied a ticket from his preferred segment.

Reacting to former Jagadish Shettar’s resignation as an MLA, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday said that the resignation of Shettar is unfortunate.

“It is unfortunate that he (Jagadish Shettar) is going to resign today. He was a senior leader, former CM, speaker, party president and minister also. However, when a party has decided that some seniors have to give some way to the younger generation,” CM Bommai said.

There will be a small impact on the party and BJP is capable of overcoming it, he added.

Meanwhile, former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Sunday said if Shettar comes back to BJP, the party would welcome him.

Yediyurappa said, “We made him (Jagadish Shettar) the chief minister of Karnataka and the BJP state president. The statements given by him have made us unhappy. People knew about Jagadish Shettar only because of BJP. I want to ask Jagadish Shettar why is he joining Congress. If he comes back to BJP, we will welcome him.”

He said People from Karnataka will not forgive Shettar.

“Dharmendra Pradhan had offered Jagadish Shatter, a ministerial position in the cabinet. We had offered a ticket to Jagadish Shatter’s family. But he did not respond,” he said.

The 224-seat Karnataka Assembly will go to polls on May 10, and the votes will be counted on May 13.
