Syria opens 275 shelters to host earthquake victims: Ministry

Damascus: A total of 275 shelters have been opened across Syria, hosting victims of the earthquake that hit the country on February 6, the Ministry of Local Administration and Environment said.
In a short statement, the Ministry on Sunday said that 235 shelters were opened in the northern Aleppo province, 32 in the northwestern province of Latakia, five in Hama province, and two in Tartous province.
The statement spelled no details about the situation in the rebel-held areas in Idlib province and the northern countryside of Aleppo, Xinhua news agency reported.
According to the Syrian Health ministry, the death toll has risen to 1,414 and the wounded to 2,349 as of Sunday evening. The UN said on Friday that the earthquake in Syria had displaced 5.3 million people.
Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said the death toll could be more than 5,300 in Syria, and the number could rise to as many as 7,000 as many people are still buried under the rubble.

Houses develop cracks in J-K’s Doda, 19 families shifted to temporary shelters

Doda/Jammu: Nineteen families were evacuated after their homes developed cracks at a village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district, officials said on Friday.
The authorities also declared unsafe a mosque and a religious school for girls at Nai Basti village in Thathri, 35 kilometres from Doda town along the Kishtwar-Batote National Highway.
A few structures in the village started developing cracks a couple of days ago but the situation was exacerbated by a landslide on Thursday with the number of buildings damaged reaching 21.
“We have shifted 19 affected families to a safer location after their houses were rendered unsafe. We are observing the situation and taking steps as per need to ensure their safety,” Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Thathri) Athar Amin Zargar told PTI.
The deputy commissioner and the senior superintendent of police visited the spot and assured all help to the affected families, he said.
Zargar, however, refused to compare the situation to that in Uttarakhand’s Joshimath — the gateway to famous pilgrimage sites like Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib — that is facing a major challenge due to land subsidence.
“Comparing the situation in Nai Basti with the sinking town of Joshimath will be an exaggeration. We are faced with a problem of landslide and geologists from Chenab Valley power projects and National Highways Authority of India have already inspected the site,” Zargar said.
While some families have shifted to a temporary shelter set up by the district administration, many others have returned to their ancestral homes.

“We are making all necessary arrangements, including food and electricity, at the campsite,” Zargar said.
Zahida Begum, whose family was shifted to a temporary site, said they lived in the village for 15 years and were surprised to notice cracks in concrete houses.
“There is panic among 50-plus households in the village. Majority of the structures developed cracks after Thursday’s landslide,” she said, demanding proper rehabilitation for the affected families.
Farooq Ahmad, another local resident, said 117 members of 19 families of policemen, ex-servicemen, defence personnel and labourers were relocated.
Nai Basti was developed about two decades ago and there was no such problem, he said.
“We request the NGOs and philanthropists to come forward and provide assistance to the affected people,” Ahmad added.

Russia-Ukraine war: 86 pc of schools in Kyiv now have bomb shelters

Kyiv: The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has resulted in almost 86 per cent of schools having bomb shelters, CNN reported citing the head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Oleksiy Kuleba on Monday.
Taking to his Telegram, Kuleba said that a total of 1,085 shelters have already been set up in educational facilities in the Kyiv region, owing to the circumstances.

With every passing day, the situation in Ukraine is becoming grave. Recently, Ukraine’s interior minister Denys Monastyrskyy was among at least 14 people killed after a helicopter crashed in a Kyiv suburb Wednesday, officials said.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the crash a “tragedy” and authorities have launched an investigation, reported CNN.
One child was among the dead and 25 others were wounded in Wednesday’s incident in the town of Brovary, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine said.
Monastyrskyy, 42, was in charge of the Ukrainian police and other emergency services. He is the highest-profile Ukrainian casualty since Russia launched its invasion last February.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin attended an event with veterans to mark the 80th anniversary of the lifting of the World War II siege of St Petersburg, then known as Leningrad, which Nazi German forces blockaded for nearly 900 days, reported Al Jazeera. He told the war veterans Russia was fighting in Ukraine to defend ethnic Russians and Russian speakers, who Moscow alleges are subject to systematic discrimination in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Kyiv rejects that allegation and says the Kremlin has used it as a pretext for what is simply an aggressive land grab.
However, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow saw no prospects for peace talks and reiterated the Kremlin’s position that there can be no negotiations with Zelenskyy’s government.
Russia has said talks are possible only if Ukraine recognises Moscow’s claims to Ukrainian territory in the country’s east and south. Kyiv says it will fight until Russia withdraws all of its troops from the country, reported Al Jazeera.
