Big changes needed to power sharing in Northern Ireland, says 70% of population

    [ad_1]

More than two-thirds of people in Northern Ireland believe big changes are required to the power-sharing institutions created by the Good Friday agreement, research commissioned by a parliamentary committee has found.

The same proportion of the population, 70%, think the peace accord of 1998 has failed to deliver stable governance with the Stormont assembly not sitting for nine of the 25 years that have elapsed since the Belfast agreement was struck.

The research was conducted by YouGov and Ohio State University for the House of Commons Northern Ireland affairs committee.

That level of scepticism about the deal’s success in delivering stability remained consistent across age, religion and political affiliation.

The committee chair, Simon Hoare, said the poll provided an “important snapshot” of current thinking in the region.

The devolved government sitting in Stormont was created under strand one of the Belfast Good Friday agreement, which was considered an ingenious way of getting previously warring sides, republicans and loyalists to run the country together.

Under the power-sharing system, elected politicians are required to self-designate as unionists, nationals or “other” to ensure laws could only be passed that worked for all communities.

A quarter of a century on, and three-quarters of the respondents in the survey consider the requirement that key decisions have to have support from both nationalist and unionist sides gives the DUP and Sinn Féin an effective veto, with growing parties such as Alliance locked out.

Stormont was collapsed for three years after a Sinn Féin walkout in 2017 and has been suspended for more than a year after the DUP pulled the plug in a protest over Brexit.

Support for reform is widespread but Bertie Ahern, one of the architects of the peace deal, has said it could only happen once the DUP was back in Stormont. The party, led by Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, said it would not be “browbeaten” into a return and few are expecting it to resume power-sharing until September.

Donaldson faced a cacophony of calls to return to Stormont in Belfast last week with leading figures involved in the peace deal, including Bill Clinton, urging politicians to face down “ugly” moments and “get the show on the road”.

“I ask you not to be discouraged, this is human affairs, there are very few permanent victories or defeats in human affairs. All these old ugly problems are always rearing their heads. You just have to suck it up and beat it back and deal with it,” Clinton told a conference at Queen’s University.

Netflix to finally crack down on password sharing, upgrades ad-supported plans

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Streaming giant Netflix is finally set to crack down on password sharing in the US this summer.

Netflix originally planned to roll out “paid sharing” in the US during the first quarter this year. The company will now introduce the feature on or before June 30.

“We are planning on a broad rollout, including in the US, in Q2,” the company said in its first-quarter 2023 earnings.

    MS Education Academy

“Paid sharing is another important initiative as widespread account sharing (over 100 million households) undermines our ability to invest in and improve Netflix for our paying members, as well as build our business,” the company added.

Netflix first launched paid sharing in Canada, New Zealand, Spain, and Portugal.

The company said it is also upgrading its ad-supported plan in terms of streaming quality and concurrent streams.

Netflix users subscribed to this plan will be able to see content in 1080p resolution (up from 720p) with support for two concurrent streams.

The feature is being rolled out to users in Canada and Spain now and people using the ad-supported plans in other 10 markets will receive these features later this month.

“We believe these enhancements will make our offering even more attractive to a broader set of consumers and further strengthen engagement for existing and new subscribers to the ads plan,” Netflix said.

Netflix says it will allow up to two extra members per account, and its fee per extra user varies by country.

The sharing plans are available to members using Standard ($15.49 a month) and Premium ($19.99 a month) subscriptions.

New START, which was reupped at the beginning of the Biden administration, caps the number of deployed nuclear warheads at 1,550 and places other limits on the number of nuclear-capable bombers and launchers.

But after Russia recently declared it would no longer abide by the treaty, and stopped sharing information with the U.S. on its stockpiles, the Biden administration had continued following the pact, until now.

“We have not received any daily notifications from them since that time,” Plumb said.

In Monday’s meeting between diplomats from both countries, “Russia responded that they will not be providing that information,” he continued. “And so as a diplomatic countermeasure, the United States will not be providing that information back.

“We are going to continue to examine what other diplomatic countermeasures are appropriate,” he added, “and what we’re trying to do is balance both responding to Russia’s irresponsible behavior but continuing to demonstrate what we believe [what] a responsible nuclear power’s action should be.”

‘Balatkaar Justification Party’: KTR on BJP MP sharing stage with Bilkis Bano rapist

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders K. Kavitha and her brother K.T. Rama Rao have lashed out at BJP after one of the convicts in Bilkis Bano gang-rape case shared stage with a BJP MP and MLA in Gujarat.

BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao also launched an attack on BJP describing it as Balatkaar Justification Party. “Welcome to Amritkaal,” taunted KTR. “Balatkaar Justification Party and its brazen embrace of these rapists is a true reflection of their mindset,” tweeted KTR.

    Kavitha’s reaction:

Kavitha, daughter of BRS president and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, took to Twitter to express her outrage.

“Bilkis Bano rapist openly shares stage with BJP’s MPs and MLAs. What have we become as a community that perpetrators of heinous crimes against women are being celebrated and given a platform while the victims plead for justice. India is watching!,” tweeted Kavitha, a member of Telangana Legislative Council, while reacting to a news and picture of the convict sharing the stage with BJP MP and MLA.

Shailesh Bhatt, one of the 11 convicted in the Bilkis Bano gang-rape case and murder of her kin during Gujarat riots of 2022, shared the stage with a BJP MP and MLA in Gujarat at a government function in Dahod district on March 25.

The convict was seen sharing the stage with Dahod MP Jasvantsinh Bhabhor and Limkheda MLA Sailesh Bhabor.

Bhatt was among 11 convicts released on Independence Day last year after remission of their sentence. Bilkis Bano has already moved the Supreme Court challenging the premature release of the convicts.

The eleven persons were convicted for the gang-rape of Bilkis Bano, who was then five months pregnant, and for killing seven members of her family, including her three-year-old daughter.

Bihar: YouTuber sharing fake videos of attacks on migrants in Tamil Nadu surrenders

    [ad_1]

Patna: Manish Kashyap, a YouTuber wanted by the Bihar Police for allegedly sharing fake videos of “attacks on migrant workers in Tamil Nadu”, surrendered before the law enforcers in West Champaran district on Saturday, a statement said.

The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Bihar Police has registered three cases against Kashyap and others on the charges of “indulging in spreading fake videos of migrants being killed and beaten up in Tamil Nadu on social media”.

The EOU has also frozen four bank accounts belonging to Kashyap.

“Kashyap, wanted by Bihar Police and Tamil Nadu Police in fake news matter of labourers issue in the southern state, surrendered before the police on Saturday fearing arrest and attachment of his belongings,” a statement issued by the EOU said.

“Six teams constituted by the EOU along with Patna and Champaran Police were continuously conducting raids on his locations at various places and hideouts since yesterday (Friday). He surrendered at Jagdishpur police station of Bettiah on Saturday fearing arrest and other legal action,” it added.

The EOU had on March 6 registered its first FIR in connection with the case and booked four persons, including Kashyap.

EOU sleuths have already also arrested Aman Kumar from Jamui in connection with its investigation into the first FIR. Those named in that FIR included Aman Kumar, Rakesh Tiwary, Yuvraj Singh Rajput and Manish Kashyap.

J S Gangwar, Additional Director General of Bihar Police (Headquarters), had told reporters last week that the EOU probe has found that 30 fake videos of migrants getting beaten up and killed in Tamil Nadu were widely shared on social media, spreading panic among the labourers and forcing them to flee the southern state.

The Tamil Nadu Police has also registered 13 cases to probe the matter.

Earlier, the Bihar government had also sent a four-member team of top officials to Tamil Nadu to coordinate with officers who were investigating the matter in the southern state.

Kerala: Male nurse arrested for raping female doctor, sharing nude photos

    [ad_1]

Kozhikode: Police on Thursday arrested a 24-year old male nurse for allegedly raping a female doctor and sharing her nude photos on social media.

The incident occurred in December last year when both were working at a hospital in Karnataka, police said.

According to the police, Nisham Babu hailing from Thrissur district allegedly raped the 28-year old doctor by giving her a false promise that a new job would be arranged for her at a hospital in Coimbatore.

The doctor was allegedly raped at a hotel here and her nude photos were taken after being lured into the trap.

The nurse, thereafter, allegedly sexually assaulted the doctor by threatening that her nude photos would be shared through social media platforms.

Sensing the danger, the victim reportedly blocked his number. The accused, thereafter, allegedly shared the victim’s nude photos on social media.

Police said Babu has been booked under IPC section 376 (Rape) and Section 67A in The Information Technology Act, 2000 (Punishment for publishing or transmitting of material containing sexually explicit act, etc, in electronic form).

Meghalaya man arrested for sharing video of EVM that showed all votes go to BJP

    [ad_1]

Shillong: A man was arrested in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district for allegedly sharing a video on social media which purportedly showed that any button pressed on an EVM leads to a vote in favour of the BJP, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) FR Kharkongor said on Saturday.

The man, identified as Bolong R Sangma, had on February 16 shared the clip, alleging that EVMs were manipulated, he said.

Sangma was arrested after the returning officer of Rongjeng assembly constituency filed a police complaint, he added.

A case was filed against him under IPC section 171G, which deals with false statement in connection with an election, Kharkongor said.

EVMs or electronic voting machines are tamper-proof and go to factory reset mode if any manipulation is attempted, he said, adding that numerous safeguards are present at every level.
