Bengaluru FC, Sreenidi Deccan share points in Super Cup opener

    [ad_1]

Kozhikode: I-League side Sreenidi Deccan held ISL heavyweights Bengaluru FC to a 1-1 stalemate to begin their campaign in the Super Cup by sharing points here on Saturday.

First-half goals from Javi Hernandez (9th minute) and Faysal Shayesteh (21′) saw the spoils being shared at the end of what was a closely-fought match in humid conditions.

Earlier, Blues’ head coach Simon Grayson named a starting XI featuring Gurpreet Singh Sandhu in goal and a back three comprising Sandesh Jhingan, Parag Shrivas and Bruno Ramires.

    MS Education Academy

Javi, who was the top scorer for Bengaluru in the 2022-23 Indian Super League, manned the midfield along with Rohit Kumar and Suresh Wangjam as the duo of Sunil Chhetri and Roy Krishna led the forward line for the home side.

Bengaluru dominated the early exchanges and didn’t take long to open the scoring, with Javi finding himself on the scoresheet.

The Spaniard saw his initial shot from the edge of the box saved by Deccan ‘keeper Aryan, and the shot-stopper then parried an attempt on the rebound by Roy Krishna before running out of luck when Javi was on point to smash home.

Carlos Vaz Pinto’s side equalized just over 10 minutes later through Shayesteh. The Afghan international picked a pass from Rilwan Hassan in the box and cut in from the left before unleashing a shot that deflected off Parag Shrivas and into the back of the net past Gurpreet.

The game continued to flow at a brisk tempo with both sides packed with intent to attack and score.

Naorem Roshan Singh and Rosenberg Gabriel were involved in an intense battle on the wings, as the two proved influential to the attacking fortunes of their respective outfits. The defensive units of both teams were kept busy in an entertaining first 45 minutes.

Bengaluru started the second period in the same vein as the first, creating more chances and carrying the threat to the opposition. But Sreenidi Deccan came knocking on the Blues’ door in the 56th minute when Gabriel’s cross from the right narrowly evaded Arijit Bogui’s head with the winger bearing down on Gurpreet’s goal.

Chances were few and far between despite the efforts of the two teams as heat and fatigue took a toll at the EMS Stadium.

Bengaluru came close to taking the lead from a late opportunity that fell to Chhetri. Roshan’s cross found the skipper at the far post, but Chhetri didn’t get enough purchase on the header.

  • ‘Can share my certificates’: KTR pokes fun at PM Modi on degree row

‘Can share my certificates’: KTR pokes fun at PM Modi on degree row

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: BRS working president and Telangana minister KT Rama Rao on Friday mocked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the ‘degree certificate’ issue and said that he has no problem sharing his certificates publicly.

“I have a Masters Degree in Biotechnology from Pune University Also have a Masters Degree in Business Administration from City University of New York Can share both certificates publicly Just Saying,” he said without naming the Prime Minister.

KTR’s comments come amidst the Gujarat High Court ruling on Friday that the degree and post-graduate degree certificate of Prime Minister Narendra Modi are not required to be provided by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Judge Biren Vaishnav’s one-judge panel overturned the Chief Information Commission’s (CIC) directive to the PMO, Gujarat University, and Delhi University PIOs to provide information about Modi’s undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal was also charged 25,000 rupees in expenses by the Gujarat high court for his request for the PM’s degree certificate’s specifics. The Gujarat University appealed the Chief Information Commission’s decision, and the high court was now hearing it.

“In a democracy, there won’t be a difference if a person holding the office is a doctorate or an illiterate. Also, there is no public interest involved in this issue. Even his privacy is affected”, legal website Bar and Bench quoted Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who was appearing for the university.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that he earned his undergraduate degree from Gujarat University in 1978 and his postgraduate degree from Delhi University in 1983.

Kejriwal’s lawyer Percy Kavina argued that, “If you see the nomination form (filed during elections), it mentions his educational qualifications. Thus, we are asking for a degree certificate and not his marksheet”.

  • Centre’s contribution to SDRF is 75% , state share only 25%: Reddy slams KCR

Centre’s contribution to SDRF is 75% , state share only 25%: Reddy slams KCR

    [ad_1]

Delhi: Union Minister G Kishan Reddy on Monday slammed Telangana Chief Minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) chief K Chandrashekhar Rao and said that 75 per cent of the funds in the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) are provided by the central government while the state share in SDRF is only 25 per cent, adding it is extremely unfortunate that farmers of Telangana have suffered losses due to the recent untimely rains across the state.

The Union minister said, “It is an undeniable fact that 75 per cent of the funds in SDRF are provided by the central government. The state share in SDRF is only 25 per cent. From 2014-15 to date, the Central Government has released Rs 2,196.60 crore to Telangana State SDRF.

In addition, RS 873.27 crore has been released under NDRF. Together with SDRF and NDRF, a total of Rs 3,069.87 crore has been provided by the central government to Telangana state. In 2022-2023, The Central Government has contributed the first instalment of Rs 188.80 crore and another Rs 188.80 crore will be transferred to the State SDRF for the financial year 2022-23.”

Stating that it is the responsibility of the government to support the farmers who have suffered losses, he said, “It is extremely unfortunate that the farmers of Telangana have suffered losses due to the recent untimely rains across the state of Telangana.”

Alleging that the KCR government of not helping the farmers, he said, “Keeping this in mind, the Government of India led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the ‘Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana’ scheme. The Telangana government, which initially joined the scheme, later withdrew from the scheme without giving any reasons.”

“This has now led to a situation where farmers of Telangana can no longer get compensation for crop losses due to unseasonal rains, natural disasters and other unforeseen calamities.

Unfortunately, the state government does not have any clarity or specific plan in terms of providing compensation to farmers who have suffered losses due to various reasons. Without any such plan it withdrew from the ‘Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana’ purely on political grounds,” Reddy added.

“Since then till today the farmers of Telangana who have lost their crops in the state are facing difficulties without getting proper compensation. At the same time, during the implementation of ‘Fasal Bima Yojana’ many farmers were benefited by it.

In the states where this scheme is being implemented, lakhs of farmers who have lost crops are getting compensation,” he further remarked.

Targeting Telangana Chief Minister KCR, he said, “It is unfortunate that the Chief Minister of the state, who recently visited the areas where crops were damaged due to untimely rains in the state, blamed the central government regarding compensation to the farmers.

While blaming the Government of India on one hand, the State Government has issued a memo to provide compensation to the farmers from the State Disaster Response Fund.”

“As on April 1, 2022, the State SDRF account had funds of Rs 608.06 crore as balance available in its account. Along with the first instalment of Rs 188.80 crore Central share of SDRF for the year 2022-23 released, on July 22, 2022, and the corresponding state share, the SDRF has a corpus of approximately Rs 860 crore.

This means that currently there are enough funds in the state SDRF to provide the necessary assistance to the farmers who have lost their crops. If the state government really loves the farmers, then I demand compensation from the treasury of the state government along with the compensation given by SDRF,” he added.

Alleging that the Chief Minister is trying to get publicity, he said, “Although the central government is providing assistance to the victims of the natural calamities in the state of Telangana, the Chief Minister is blaming the central government. It is clear that instead of understanding the plight of the farmers who have lost their crops and helping them, the CM is focused on blaming the Centre and gaining publicity.”

Stating that the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government in the state was misleading the people, the Union Minister said, “It is foolish of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders to hide the truth and mislead the people in the current time when technology has developed so much. However, I suggest that the KCR government should refrain from spreading lies and tell the truth in front of the people.”

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao last Thursday visited rain-affected areas in a few districts of the state and assured the farmers of financial assistance for cross losses.

He announced a compensation of Rs 10,000 per acre for farmers who lost their crops due to recent unseasonal rains and hailstorms, informed the government.

CM KCR while addressing the Ramapuram village of Khammam district, said, “Due to the rains, there was a loss of 2,28,250 acres of crops throughout the state. Out of this, maize crops suffered the maximum damage of 1,29,446 acres.

As per the central government norms, they won’t get much money. In the Telangana government, along with putting in big investments and completing the pending and new projects, we are implementing farmer support schemes that are not there anywhere else in the world.

With it, the farmers are also getting stable and coming out of their debts. Despite that, they are some fools who say that we won’t get anything from agriculture. Today Telangana is first in per capita income in the country. We have the highest per capita income, more than Maharashtra. In the GSDP growth rate, farming plays a vital role.”

“Farmers don’t have to feel bad about it as the government is with you”, he said assuring support to the farmers.
“After BRS was formed we have been saying that India requires a total integrated agricultural policy. For funds, we have to write a report to the Centre and we don’t know when they will give it. We don’t want to depend on the Centre as it takes six months to respond,” said the BRS chief.

Rahul should share information if he is really serious about women’s issues: Anurag Thakur

    [ad_1]

Nagpur: Union minister Anurag Thakur on Sunday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should share information if he is really serious about women’s issues.

Thakur’s remarks came on a day Delhi Police queried Rahul Gandhi at his residence over his remark made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra that “women are still being sexually assaulted”.

Speaking to reporters in Nagpur city in Maharashtra, Thakur wondered if Rahul Gandhi was trying to hide something.

“It has become a habit of some people to remain in limelight by saying anything. But, they don’t understand the seriousness of the subject. If Rahulji is really serious about women’s issues, then he should give the information. What is he hiding?… Was it a lie then or is he lying now, only he can tell,” the Information and Broadcasting Minister said.

Queried on growing obscenity and the use of abusive language on OTT platforms and regulation of content, the minister said such complaints have increased a lot recently.

“As per the current procedure, producers have to address complaints about the content first and then they go to their association. When a complaint reaches the government (I&B department), strict action is taken as per rules,” he said.

Thakur said such complaints of (obscenity on OTT platforms) have increased and the department is taking them seriously.

“If we have to do any changes, we will think about it seriously. Because freedom was given for creativity and not for vulgarity or foul language. Abusive words and wrong things won’t be accepted in the name of creativity,” he added.

When asked if the Indian cricket team will travel to Pakistan if Asia Cup is held in that country, Thakur, who also holds the Sports portfolio, said, “Let BCCI decide first. When the time comes, the Indian government will decide”.

  • ‘Discrimination in Shariat law’: SC to hear plea on equal property share to females

‘Discrimination in Shariat law’: SC to hear plea on equal property share to females

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a plea filed by a Muslim woman who claimed the provision of Shariat law to the extent of not giving an equal share to a female compared to a male is “discriminatory” and violative of the rights guaranteed under the Constitution.

A bench of justices Krishna Murari and Sanjay Karol was hearing the appeal against the Kerala High Court’s January 6 order filed by Bushara Ali, who claimed that it is her grievance that being a daughter, according to Shariat Law, she was only allotted half the shares as of her male counterparts.

The bench issued notice to the petitioner’s 11 siblings which include four sisters.

The plea, filed through advocate Bijo Mathew Joy, said Bushara is a decree holder in a partition suit whereby according to a preliminary decree dated January 19, 1995, she was allotted 7/152 shares of the scheduled property having 1.44 acres each.

Joy said that a status quo has also been ordered by the apex court.

The plea filed by Bushara said, “Petitioner is aggrieved by the final decree passed by the trial court wherein the petitioner was only allotted 4.82 cents of property marked as plot D of advocate commissioner’s plan.”

Bushara said her father died intestate leaving behind his wife, seven sons and five daughters.

She said in her plea, “It is the grievance of the petitioner that in spite of guarantee of the Constitution, Muslim women are subjected to discrimination. Even though the preliminary decree dated January 19, 1995 was not challenged and had become final, petitioner begs to submit that the partition of the property as per Shariat Law is discriminatory and same needs to be set aside. The Section 2 of the Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act, 1937, to the extent of not giving equal share to a female compared to a male is violative of Article 15 of the Constitution and therefore void as per Article 13 of Constitution.”

The petition said that a similar issue is pending consideration before the court.

Referring to the 2017 verdict in triple talaq case, she said the 1937 Act is a pre-constitutional legislation which would fall directly within Article 13(1) of Constitution.

Article 13(1) states “all laws in force in the territory of India immediately before the commencement of this Constitution, in so far as they are inconsistent with the provisions of this Part, shall, to the extent of such inconsistency, be void”.

Bushara said she raised the objections against the advocate commissioner’s report and plan dated 2022 before the trial court but it was dismissed and the advocate commissioner’s plan was accepted and based on that, the property having an extent of 4.82 cents was allotted to petitioner.

“The High Court in First Appeal, without even looking into the records and without considering my aforesaid objections to the Commission report erroneously dismissed the appeal,” she said.

Bushara sought interim order from the apex court restraining her siblings from alienating 80.44 cents of scheduled property as per advocate commissioner’s report dated July 25, 2022.

Social media users who share more news care less about accuracy: Study

    [ad_1]

New York: People who share news items extensively on social media often tend to discern less over their accuracy, according to a study.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) conducted an experiment to understand a core tension between the impulse to share news and to think about whether it is true.

The results showed that even considering whether or not to share news items on social media reduces people’s ability to tell truths from falsehoods.

The study involved asking more than 3,000 people to assess whether various news headlines were accurate.

But if participants were first asked whether they would share that content, they were 35 per cent worse at telling truths from falsehoods. Participants were also 18 per cent less successful at discerning truth when asked about sharing right after evaluating them.

“Just asking people whether they want to share things makes them more likely to believe headlines they wouldn’t otherwise have believed, and less likely to believe headlines they would have believed,” David Rand, Professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management said.

“Thinking about sharing just mixes them up,” he added.

While people’s willingness to share news content and their ability to judge it accurately can both be bolstered separately, the study suggests the two things do not positively reinforce each other when considered at the same time.

“The second you ask people about accuracy, you’re prompting them, and the second you ask about sharing, you’re prompting them,” Ziv Epstein, a doctoral student in the Human Dynamics group at the MIT Media Lab said.

“If you ask about sharing and accuracy at the same time, it can undermine people’s capacity for truth discernment.”

The paper will be published in the journal Science Advances.

  • Luxury housing sales share up at 18 pc across top seven cities

Luxury housing sales share up at 18 pc across top seven cities

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The share of the luxury housing segment in the total sale of residential units in the top cities of the country has gone up, as per a report.

As per realty consultancy ANAROCK Research, out of the total 3.65 lakh units sold across the top seven cities in 2022, 18 per cent (approx 65,680 units) were in the luxury category priced more than Rs 1.5 crore.

Contrastingly, of the total 2.61 lakh units sold in entire 2019, just 7 per cent (approx 17,740 units) were in the luxury category.

The MMR, NCR, and Hyderabad have led luxury homes sales in 2022 with nearly 50,100 units sold in these three cities altogether. In 2019, together they saw sales of mere 14,050 luxury homes in the entire year.

Data further revealed that in terms of overall sales share, MMR’s luxury housing sales share increased from 13 per cent of 80,870 units in 2019 to nearly 30 per cent of approx 1.10 lakh units in 2022.

In NCR, the sales share rose to 15 per cent of approx. 63,710 units in 2022, from 4 per cent of total 46,920 units sold in 2019.

In Hyderabad, it increased to 16 per cent (of total 47,490 units sold) in 2022 from 10 per cent of 16,590 units sold in 2019.

As per Inspector General of Registration, Maharashtra, India’s most expensive city – Mumbai – saw revenue collections from property registrations touch a new high in February 2023 at Rs 1,102 crore. This was a whopping 79 per cent jump against February 2022 collections when it stood at Rs 615 crore.

ANAROCK Group Chairman Anuj Puri said: “Interestingly, even while revenue collections went up significantly in the period in Mumbai, the total number of property registrations saw a drop of 8 per cent in the year – from 10,379 total registrations in February 2022 to nearly 9,511 registrations in February 2023. This clearly indicates that the sale of big-ticket price homes (i.e. luxury homes) saw significant movement.”

“If we deep-dive into data further, February 2023 has seen the highest revenue collection in Mumbai in the last five years during the same month. Also, in the entire FY 2023, we saw February to record the maximum revenue collections,” he added.

One major factor for high sales of big-ticket price homes in Mumbai and other top cities could be the government’s recent move in the Union Budget 2023-24 to cap capital gains at Rs 10 crore. This new move will come into effect from April 2023. Thus, to save tax on capital gains, the HNIs (High networth individuals) across top cities including Mumbai are rushing in close luxury housing deals before the financial year ends in March.

Under this new move, if one sells a house/other assets including equities and his/her gains are more than Rs 10 crore, then maximum benefit that can be availed is only up to Rs 10 crore when invested into another property. Capital gains of over Re 10 crore will henceforth be taxed from April 2023.

Previously, to save on tax from their capital gains, HNIs/ultra-HNIs would mostly re-invest into ultra-luxury property. Thus, the new move could be a deterrent for luxury housing sales to an extent once the new provision comes into effect. However, to say that it will have a major impact on this segment will remain to be seen.
