Silicon Valley Bank collapse sets off scramble in London to shield UK tech sector

    Voiced by artificial intelligence.

LONDON — The U.K. government was scrambling on Sunday to limit the fallout for the British tech sector from the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, a big U.S. lender to many startups and technology companies.

The government is treating the potential reverberations as “a high priority” after a run on deposits drove California-based SVB into insolvency, marking the largest bank failure since the global financial crisis, U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt said in a statement Sunday morning. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and other policymakers were on alert that problems at SVB could spread.

Hunt said the British government is working on a plan to backstop the cashflow needs of companies affected by SVB’s implosion and the halt in trading of its British unit, Silicon Valley Bank UK. The Bank of England announced on Friday that the U.K. unit is set to enter insolvency.

Silicon Valley Bank’s “failure could have a significant impact on the liquidity of the tech ecosystem,” Hunt said.

The government is working “to avoid or minimize damage to some of our most promising companies in the U.K.,” the chancellor said. “We will bring forward immediate plans to ensure the short-term operational and cashflow needs of Silicon Valley Bank UK customers are able to be met.”

Hunt told the BBC Sunday morning that the government would have a plan that deals with the operational cashflow needs of companies “in the next few days.”

Discussions between the governor of the Bank of England, the prime minister and the chancellor were taking place over the weekend, according to the statement.

Speaking on Sky News Sunday morning, Hunt said that Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey had made it clear that there was “no systemic risk to our financial system.” But Hunt warned that there was a “serious risk” to the technology and life-sciences sectors in the U.K.

Ministers held talks with the tech industry on Saturday after tech executives in an open letter warned Hunt that the SVB collapse posed an “existential threat” to the U.K. tech sector. They called for government intervention.

Britain’s science and technology minister on Saturday pledged to do “everything we can” to limit the repercussions on U.K. tech companies.

Michelle Donelan, who heads the newly created Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, said in a tweet: “We recognize that the tech sector is often not cashflow positive as they grow and I am determined to stand with them as we do everything we can to minimize impact on the sector.”

A bank insolvency procedure for Silicon Valley Bank UK would mean eligible depositors would be paid the protected limit of £85,000, or up to £170,000 for joint accounts.

The Bank of England said in its Friday statement that SVB UK “has a limited presence in the U.K. and no critical functions supporting the financial system.”

  • Dhaka explosion toll raises to 18, Bangladesh govt sets up probe

Dhaka explosion toll raises to 18, Bangladesh govt sets up probe

    [ad_1]

Dhaka: Bangladesh’s Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said Wednesday that the country has sufficient expertise to carry out an investigation into the powerful explosion that ripped through a multi-storey building in a crowded area here, killing 18 people.

The “earthquake-like” explosion at the seven-storey building at Old Dhaka’s crowded Gulistan area on Tuesday also injured over 150 people, officials said.

The cause of the explosion could not be known immediately, but local residents suspected chemicals illegally stored inside the building, mostly used as an office and business complex, might have sparked the blast.

Talking to reporters after visiting the explosion site on Wednesday, Khan said members of bomb disposal units and police, army and fire service personnel will conduct the probe into the incident.

“But if the country’s experts fail (to investigate), we will seek assistance from foreign experts,” he said.

“The investigation must be impartial. There is no reason for the investigation to be partial,” he was quoted as saying by the Daily Star newspaper.

Everything regarding the investigation will be made public, Khan said.

On Tuesday, hospital authorities confirmed 17 deaths while one more victim succumbed to his wounds overnight, raising the death toll to 18. The number of wounded people is estimated to be over 150, officials said.

A four-member probe body headed by Lt Col Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury, director of Fire Service and Civil Defence (Operation and maintenance), has been formed to look into the cause of the explosion.

The committee has been tasked to submit its report within five working days, said Shahjahan Sikder, an official at the Fire service and Civil Defence headquarters.

Meanwhile, three firefighting units started the rescue operation for the second day on Wednesday.

Although the fire service resumed rescue and recovery efforts for a second day at the blast site, the work is moving slowly because of the risky condition of the building.

“It became risky to carry on the extensive rescue searches since the explosion has weakened the building. We are waiting for the safety clearance from the concerned experts to restart our full-scale operation,” fire service’s deputy director Babu Chakrabarty told reporters.

He added that rescuers were kept ready to enter into the building, where the explosion took place.

The fire service had suspended the rescue campaign after fire chief Brigadier General Mohammad Mainuddin Tuesday night said that the “the building appeared vulnerable after the explosion” that occurred on its ground floor and badly damaged two upper floors.

Witnesses said the building, which mostly housed several sanitary hardware shops and some business offices, was bending on one side while the fire officials said the blast damaged most of the pillars on the ground floor making it risky for anyone to enter into it.

The beams and pillars in the basement of the building are damaged, and operating heavy machinery in the area, such as excavators, could create vibrations that might cause the building to collapse, said Zafar Hossain, deputy commissioner of the Lalbagh zone of DMP.

“The experts are already holding a meeting. They will come here and will give further instructions. The rescue work is still incomplete,” he was quoted as saying by the Dhaka Tribune newspaper.

Once the fire service fully resumes its operation and removes the debris, only then it will be possible to confirm if anyone is trapped there, he added.

Officials fear the death toll is likely to go up as many of those rescued are critically injured.

Meanwhile, authorities handed over the bodies of the 17 people who died in the explosion to their relatives on Wednesday, said Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of the state-run Dhaka Medical College and Hospital police outpost.

Among the injured, 11 people have been undergoing treatment at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, United News of Bangladesh reported.

According to media reports, at least three people were still missing but several more were feared to be trapped under debris.

“We cannot confirm yet if the blast was the outcome of any sabotage. But our bomb disposal unit along with military and police bomb disposal teams are working,” RAB director general M Khurshid Hossain told reporters on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in Doha for the United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries, has prayed for the peace of the departed and urged authorities to take prompt action to ensure better treatment of the injured.

Tuesday’s explosion occurred two days after another exposition at a building in Dhaka’s Science Laboratory area that killed three people and injured several others.

Last week, seven people were killed in an explosion at a private oxygen plant in the southeastern port city of Chattogram, injuring dozens of others.

  • Pune’s CSIR-NCL sets up sanitary pad disposal mechanism on campus

Pune’s CSIR-NCL sets up sanitary pad disposal mechanism on campus

    [ad_1]

Pune: In a bid to provide an improved work environment to its women researchers, the Pune-based CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (CSIR-NCL), a premier research and development institute in the field of chemical sciences, has deployed a sanitary pad disposal mechanism on its campus.

Through this disposal system, the treated sanitary pads are recycled to create different things, including flower pots, pencils and diaries with the help of their cellulosic content, while their plastic content is separated and mixed with concrete to make paving stones, the laboratory said.

The sanitary pad disposal mechanism and vending machines have been installed with the help of Padcare, a start-up incubated at NCL’s Venture Centre.

The process started after a woman PhD student from the institute, during an interaction with Union minister Jitendra Singh last year, had flagged the lack of proper sanitary pad disposal mechanism in many institutes of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), to which the NCL Director had said that an “inventive” solution was in the offing and would be deployed at the hostels and labs.

Replying to a query by PTI, the CSIR-NCL said it has deployed and implemented a sanitary pad disposal mechanism developed by a start-up incubated at the NCL Venture Centre, which is a smokeless and recyclable solution.

It said that some essential criteria for the choice of this method included not only usual parameters like capital investment and ease of deployment, but also convenient routine operation.

“Its use is quite intuitive, and deployment involves just the physical placement of the bin in each stall. The pickup is also simple and done by personnel of the company. The treated waste sanitary pads are separated for their cellulosic and plastic content. The cellulosic content is recycled into flower pots, pencils, and diaries. The plastic content is separated and mixed with concrete to make paving stones. Many disposal bins are installed in the washroom stalls designated for women in the institute and the hostel premises,” the institute said.

Prof Ashish Lele, Director of the CSIR-NCL, said that CSIR-NCL is happy to have set up a facility that allows easy access to and safe disposal of sanitary pads thereby enabling an improved work environment for our women researchers and enabling them to reach their full potential.

Dr Anu Raghunathan, one of the scientists involved in deploying the menstrual hygiene management system, said that based on the data acquired, the menstrual hygiene management solution implemented is quite circular.

“Sustainable menstrual practices have been adopted at the NCL and will definitely help us. Menstrual waste should not be treated like normal garbage, and installing these bins has brought a major relief to us,” Bhagyashree Likhitkar, a third year PhD Scholar, said.

Shikha Thakur, a fourth year PhD scholar, said that sanitary pad disposal bins have brought about a huge relief to the waste collectors/segregators across the NCL campus. In addition, safe and healthy disposal practices reduce the risk of infection or disease to sanitary workers.

Ajinkya Dhariya, the founder of Padcare, a Pune-based start-up for sustainable sanitary waste processing and recycling, said that the start-up has installed 12 sanitary napkin vending machines and 45 sanitary napkin disposal bins.

“On a monthly basis, our team goes to the locations to pick up the sanitary waste, thereby helping the girl students from the hostels and educational institutes. Till date, we have recovered more than 15,000 to 20,000 sanitary napkins and culled of almost 100 metric tons of carbon equivalent while impacting women’s health, hygienic privacy, and giving a hygienic environment to our waste pickers as well,” he said.

He said that besides NCL, his start-up has installed the mechanism at the city-based Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) and also at Venture Centre.

He added that their sanitary disposal bins and vending machines serve one million menstruators in the country.

  • Telangana: Bandi Sanjay accuses KCR of installing meters for pump sets

Telangana: Bandi Sanjay accuses KCR of installing meters for pump sets

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit president and Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Monday accused chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) of conspiring to instal meters for agriculture pumpsets and throwing the blame on the Centre.

Speaking to reporters after calling on the BJP workers of Kamalapur, who were arrested and released from jail later, Sanjay said the KCR government had written a letter to the Centre stating that it would instal meters for agriculture pumpsets, as a pre-condition for borrowing more loans.

“It has been a practice for KCR, whenever there are elections in the state, to propagate utter lies stating that if the BJP comes to power, it would instal meters for agriculture motors. Now, I will prove that the state government itself has written a letter to the Centre agreeing to the condition that it would instal meters to the pumpsets for obtaining more loans,” he said.

Stating that the electricity department would not take up installation of meters for farm pumpsets without a green signal from the chief minister, Sanjay challenged the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to prove him wrong.

The BJP president also dubbed the chief minister a liar for claiming to provide round-the-clock power supply to agriculture sector free of cost.

“It is a blatant lie. In fact, in many villages, nobody knows when the power supply gets disconnected. The electricity authorities are informing the farmers about disconnection of three-phase power supply. Yet, KCR and his cabinet colleagues are indulging in lies,” he said.

Sanjay said the entire electricity department was in deep crisis with employees not getting salaries on time and the power bill arrears to the extent of Rs 20,000 crore were piling up with the discoms due to non-payment by the government departments.

“The government is not compensating to the Discoms for the free power supply. The Discoms, which are reeling under losses to the extent of Rs 70,000 crore, are on the verge of closure,” he alleged.

Sanjay also accused the KCR government of spreading canards against the Centre on approval to Bayyaram Steel Plant, release of Central grants to the state and privatisation of Singareni. “We have thrown a challenge to the chief minister that we shall expose his lies. But he has not responded to our challenge so far,” he said.

Sanjay lashed out at the police for foisting false cases against the BJP workers of Kamalapur who countered the attacks of the BRS leaders on local BJP MLA Eatala Rajender.

“The police resorted to indiscriminate lathi-charge on the BJP workers. The BRS will be in power only for a few months. After the BJP comes to power, we shall take these police officials to task. They have to be ready to face he repercussions,” he stated.

Jindal Group Sets Its First Unit In Kashmir

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Jindal steel has laid foundation stone of its first investment project in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district. A ₹ 150-crore steel processing unit in Pulwama is the first such project being set up after special status to the state under Article 370 of the Constitution was scrapped in 2019.

Sajjan Jindal, chairman of JSW group, tweeted photos of a prayer ceremony of the foundation stone at Lassipora Industrial Estate in Pulwama district.

“Proud to announce that we have laid the foundation stone for our new steel processing unit in Pulwama – the heart of Kashmir. Contributing to the growth of the beautiful state of Jammu and Kashmir,” Jindal tweeted.

Almost two years ago, the Union Territory administration had granted 8.75 acre to JSW Steel.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has been talking about receiving proposals worth ₹ 70,000 crore for investment. But these have remained largely on paper.

After foundation ceremony by Jindal Steels, the BJP government in the centre is finally walking the talk on development.

“Now development is visible on the ground. To all the leaders who used to say that nothing is visible on the ground, Lassipora is proof. The BJP does what we say we will do,” NDTV quoted BJP spokesperson Abhijeet Jasrotia as having said.

In December, the government told parliament that over ₹ 1,000 crore investment has come to Jammu and Kashmir since 2019.

  • Efforts afoot to have built-in satellite tuners in TV sets: Anurag Thakur

Efforts afoot to have built-in satellite tuners in TV sets: Anurag Thakur

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur on Monday said efforts are afoot to have a built-in satellite tuner in television sets to offer access to over 200 channels, a move that would allow viewers to watch programmes without set-top boxes.

Television sets with built-in satellite tuners would enable reception of free-to-air television and radio channels by mounting a small antenna at a suitable place such as at the rooftop or side wall of a building.

Addressing the media here, Thakur said there has been a humongous expansion of general entertainment channels on Doordarshan’s Free Dish, which has helped attract crores of viewers.

“I have made a new beginning in my department. If your television has a built-in satellite tuner, then there will be no need to have a separate set-top box. One can have access to more than 200 channels at the click of the remote,” he said while responding to a question.

The minister, however, made it clear that the decision in this matter is yet to be taken.

Doordarshan is in the process of phasing out analog transmission, and free-to-air channels will continue to be broadcast using digital satellite transmission.

In December last year, Thakur had written to Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to issue directions to television manufacturers to adopt the standards issued by the Bureau of Industrial Standards for built-in satellite tuners.

At present, television viewers need to purchase a set-top box for viewing various paid and free channels.

A viewer is required to use a set-top box even for the reception of free-to-air channels (non-encrypted) transmitted by Doordarshan.

The number of households having Doordarshan Free Dish have more than doubled since 2015.

A KPMG report had pegged Free Dish users at 20 million in 2015. The number had increased to 43 million in 2021.

Thakur said according to the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, SWAYAM Prabha channels were started for classes 1 to 12 in record time during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that the poor and those staying in rural areas had access to education.

“Today there are about 55 such channels and state governments are starting their own channels separately. Apart from news channels, there has been tremendous expansion of general entertainment channels on Free Dish,” he added.
