Kharge sets wheels of opposition unity moving, despite divergence on Adani

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: At a time when Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar, a Congress ally in Maharashtra, has expressed doubts over Opposition’s demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the allegations of financial irregularities levelled against the Adani Group, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge is leaving no stone unturned to gloss over the issue and project a united Opposition face in the run-up to next year’s Lok Sabha polls.

“I feel that instead of a JPC, a Supreme Court-appointed commission is more reliable and independent,” Pawar said.

Amid all these developments, taking the first step to unite the Opposition parties, Kharge recently rang leaders of various like-minded parties, including DMK’s M.K. Stalin, Nitish Kumar of the JD(U) and Uddhav Thackeray of the Shiv Sena (UBT), inviting them for a meeting in Delhi next month to formalise a common agenda.

    MS Education Academy

With Opposition leadership being a core issue as the Trinamool Congress, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and parties like the Samajwadi Party might not accept the Congress leading the front, Kharge has tried to clear the matter by stating that there should not be an obsession over leadership among the Opposition parties.

“The issue of leadership will arise when the time is ripe. It will be a collective decision. We will unitedly fight the polls as people are fed up with the Modi government’s policies,” Kharge said.

Also, on BJP attacking the Congress over dynasty politics, Kharge said that since 1998, no Gandhi family member has been either a Prime Minister or a minister.

“The Gandhi family has been agitating on people’s issues for the past many years while others are just enjoying themselves,” Kharge said.

He added that all the issues to be raised in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha polls will be discussed at an appropriate time.

Meanwhile, BRS leader and Rajya Sabha MP K. Keshava Rao said that though his party has been politically distant from the Congress, it is with the main Opposition party on certain issues.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has also said that he is waiting for the Congress to take the initiative to bring the Opposition together.

On Pawar saying that a Supreme Court monitored probe is enough on the ongoing Adani row, the Congress was quick to respond that it is his personal opinion and the entire Opposition wants a JPC.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “The NCP may have its view, but 19 like-minded Opposition parties are convinced that the Adani Group issue is real and very serious. But the Opposition is united and will be together in saving the Constitution and our democracy from the BJP’s assaults and in defeating the BJP’s divisive and destructive political, social and economic agenda.”

The Shiv Sena was also quick to say that Pawar’s statement will not cause any harm to the MVA in Maharashtra.

Although the first step has been taken for Opposition unity, there are still miles to go.

Telangana: Singareni sets highest annual coal production record

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) produced 671 lakh tonnes of coal in the fiscal year 2022–2023 and set a record for the highest annual amount of production.

SCCL transported roughly 667 lakh tonnes of coal, which is 2% more than the previous year. In addition to this, it has provided coal to thermal power plants in eight other states and to over 2,000 different sectors nationwide, a press note informed.

SCCL Chairman and Managing Director N Sridhar stated that on March 31, Singareni transported 2.64 lakh tonnes of coal, the most in its history, breaking the previous record of 2.59 lakh tonnes set on March 11, 2016.

    MS Education Academy

The business has set a target of 750 lakh tonnes of coal production for the fiscal years 2023–2024 after being encouraged by the coal production turnover achieved during the current fiscal, he added on Saturday.

According to Sridhar, Singareni has also broken a record by removing 418 million cubic metres of overburden during the current fiscal year, which is 7% more than the 392 million cubic metres attained in 2017–18.

Sridhar stated that five of the total 11 coal mining locations under Singareni had exceeded their goals by a large margin. He added that the underground mines also performed well during the current fiscal, with 8 mines achieving more than 100% production.

He said the performances of open-cast mines were also very encouraging, with 11 out of 18 open-cast mines, which are the main sources of coal production in Singareni, achieving 100% production.

  • Grand Mufti Sets Sadaqat-Ul-Fitr At Rs 65 Per Person

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR:  According to the Grand Mufti Nasir-ul Islam of Jammu and Kashmir, the Sadaqat-ul-Fitr per person for this Ramadan has been fixed at Rs 65, and there is no issue with paying more if the individual has the financial capability to do so. Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam further stated that the amount for Sadaqat-ul-Fitr was determined through a thorough consensus with the Ulema from both the Kashmir and Jammu regions. He also emphasized that it is compulsory for every individual to pay Sadaqat-ul-Fitr at the rate of Rs 65 during this holy month.

“One organization Saut Ul-Awliya has announced Rs 70 in their individual capacity as Sadaqat-ul Fitr. If any person wants to pay Rs 70 or more than that, there is no harm as rewards will be more,” the Grand Mufti said.

Mufti Nasir-ul Islam emphasized that Sadaqat-ul-Fitr must be given to those who are underprivileged, impoverished, homeless, orphaned, or destitute, and not to Masjids, Shrines, Khanqahs, or any other religious organization. He stated that the Fitr amount must be directed towards deserving individuals before Eid so that they can also partake in the festivities with others.

The Fitr amount was determined through a consensus with the Ulema from the Kashmir and Jammu regions, which includes prominent figures such as the head of Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Moulana Rehmatullah Qasimi, patron of Darul Uloom Rahimiya Bandipora, Mufti Nazir Ahmed Qasmi and Mufti Muzaffar, Mufti Abdur Raheem via Baramulla, Khateeb at the shrine of Hazrat Naqshband Sahab (RA) Prof Muhammad Tayib Kamili, Chairman Karwani-e-Islami Ghulam Rasool Hami, Fayaz Ahmed Rizvi from Sautul Awliya, Shia Scholars Aga Syed Al Hassan Mosvi, Aga Syed Haadi, and Masoor Abbas Ansari, Muhammad Yaseen Kirmani, Gen Sec Muslim Personal Law Board, Mufti Himayon, Shabir Ahmed Geelani, Abdur Hameed Nayeemi, Moulana Younus, and Abdur Rehman Ashrafi from Qazigund. From Jammu, Ulema’s who participated in the consensus include Mufti Nazir Ahmed, Mufti Shabir Ahmed Noori, Qari Ali Hussain, Haji Muhammad Shafi Nasri, Mufti Liaquat Ali Rajouri, Master Ashraf from Kathua, Maulana Muzaffar Hussain Rizvi from Jammu, Maulana Shafi Rizvi from Samba, Mufti Muhammad Iqbal from Poonch, Hafiz Syed Yasir from Udhampur, Bashir Ahmed Qadri and Reasi, and Haji Muhammad Tariq from Jammu.

Mufti Nasir-ul Islam referred to the Hadith, stating that “Every Muslim must pay Sadaqat-ul-Fitr at the end of the month of Ramadan as an expression of gratitude to Allah for allowing them to observe the mandatory fast. Its objective is to act as a tax on the fasting individual. The fasting of a person in the month of Ramadan will remain suspended between the earth and the heavens and will not ascend to the Divine Presence until the Fitr amount is paid.”

In regards to Zakat, Mufti Nasir explained that Zakat is payable at a rate of 2.5% on the wealth one possesses above the nisab. The nisab is equivalent to 85 grams of 24k gold and represents the minimum amount of wealth that one must possess before they become obligated to pay zakat. (KNO)

  • Delhi HC sets aside summons to ‘The Wire’ editor in defamation case

Delhi HC sets aside summons to ‘The Wire’ editor in defamation case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday set aside a summons issued to the editor and deputy editor of online news portal “The Wire” in a criminal defamation case over a publication on a dossier allegedly depicting the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) here as a “den of organised sex racket”.

The complaint was made by Amita Singh, Professor and Chairperson of the Centre for Study of Law and Governance at the JNU, against several people, including the editor and deputy editor of “The Wire”, for allegedly imputing in the April 2016 publication that she had prepared the dossier in question.

Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani said he was unable to discern how the article could be said to have defamed the complainant when it “nowhere says that the respondent (Singh) is involved in the wrongful activities, nor does it make any other derogatory reference to her in connection therewith”.

The controversial dossier exposed wrongful activities that were stated to be going on in the JNU campus and that Singh was leading a team of people who compiled the document, the judge added.

The court also said the subject publication itself was not before the magisterial court in accordance with section 65B of the Evidence Act.

“On a plain reading of the extract of the subject publication, which is all that was contained in the complaint, there appears to be nothing ‘defamatory’ in it, as understood in law, since all it says is that the dossier calls out certain wrongdoing in the university. Since, on the point of law, there can be no oral evidence in substitution of a certificate under section 65B of the Evidence Act, there was no material before the learned magistrate based on which the summoning order could have been passed,” the court said.

It further said the complainant’s grievance was that the comments made by certain other accused persons against her were defamatory but the lower court did not summon them.

“Summoning order dated 07.01.2017 made by the learned metropolitan magistrate in criminal complaint bearing CC No. 32203/2016 cannot be sustained in law, and is accordingly quashed and set aside,” the court ordered.

The complainant had argued before the lower court that the accused persons had launched a hate campaign against her to malign her reputation.

The editor and deputy editor of “The Wire” had challenged the summoning order before the high court on the ground that there was no material on record on the basis of which the magistrate could have summoned them.
