Punjab guv sends forensic report on minister’s ‘objectionable’ video to CM Mann

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: Governor Banwarilal Purohit has forwarded a forensic report of an “objectionable” video of a Punjab minister to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, said official sources on Saturday.

According to the report, the video was not morphed, said the sources.

The governor had sent the video to the Chandigarh Director General of Police to check its authenticity after Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira submitted it to him.

    MS Education Academy

On May 1, Khaira handed over the “highly objectionable video of gross misconduct” of the minister to the governor for forensic verification.

Khaira also demanded that the minister be dropped from the Cabinet if the video was found genuine.

However, Khaira did not name the minister while submitting the video to the governor.

BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Monday claimed that one of Mann government’s ministers had tendered his resignation as his “obscene video” had been submitted to the Punjab governor.

Chief Minister Mann, however, said he had not received any resignation nor any such video.

Sudan army sends envoys to Saudi Arabia for truce talks

    [ad_1]

Khartoum: The Sudanese Army said that it has sent negotiators to the Saudi port city of Jeddah to discuss the humanitarian truce as part of a Saudi-American initiative to end the conflict in the African country.

As part of the Saudi-American initiative, a delegation of the Sudanese Armed Forces left for Jeddah to discuss the details relating to the truce, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement issued on Friday by the Sudanese army.

“This tends to secure and prepare the suitable circumstances to deal with the humanitarian aspects for our citizens under the current conditions,” the statement added.

    MS Education Academy

Earlier this week, both the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) agreed to extend the truce for seven days.

The RSF has not officially confirmed that it had sent negotiators to Jeddah, though local media reports said so.

Sudan has been witnessing deadly armed clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF in the capital city of Khartoum and other areas since April 15, with the two sides accusing each other of initiating the conflict.

According to UN statistics, thousands of Sudanese citizens have been displaced or forced to seek refuge in safe areas in Sudan and neighboring countries, including Egypt, Ethiopia and Chad.

So far, the deadly clashes have left 550 people dead and 4,926 others wounded, according to the Sudanese health ministry.

  • Senate sends bipartisan rebuke of solar tariff policy to Biden’s desk

Senate sends bipartisan rebuke of solar tariff policy to Biden’s desk

    [ad_1]

    congress solar tariffs 11660

The resolution would use the Congressional Review Act to rescind Biden’s moratorium on new tariffs for solar cells and modules from Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The rule was issued as the Commerce Department investigates whether companies are circumventing existing U.S. tariffs on China by funneling products through those four countries.

Commerce issued preliminary findings in December that said Chinese companies were indeed circumventing the tariffs, and its final determination is due later this year. But given the two-year pause, no new tariffs resulting from the probe can be levied until mid-2024.

The resolution resurfaced long-running tensions on the Commerce probe. Solar industry officials who oppose the resolution warn it carries a threat of retroactive duties that will cost jobs, shut down planned solar projects and undercut the Biden administration’s climate goals.

“It’s going to send a devastating message to the solar industry and particularly to our independent, small businesses,” Nevada Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen said in an interview.

Rosen led an open letter Wednesday with eight Democratic senators that argued Biden’s two-year pause on additional tariffs is necessary as the United States works to bolster its domestic manufacturing capabilities.

But supporters of the resolution — including several Senate Democrats — argue it’s necessary to enforce U.S. trade law and support domestic industry, while ensuring the U.S. clean energy transition is not built using Chinese products.

“If you vote no, that means you support slave labor,” said Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), who sponsored the Senate resolution. “You don’t want more American jobs and you don’t believe our trade policies mean anything.”

The comment is a reference to the use of forced labor within China’s Xinjiang region — an area of bipartisan concern. The solar industry has vocally opposed the use of forced labor in its supply chain, and the resolution approved Wednesday does not directly mention the topic.

Rosen rejected Scott’s contention on Wednesday.

“We’re always going to be against forced labor. We’re always going to be for holding the Chinese Communist Party’s feet to the fire in everything we do,” she said.

The measure gathered support from nine Senate Democrats on Wednesday: Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Ron Wyden of Oregon, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, Bob Casey and John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Jon Tester of Montana and Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin.

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky was the lone GOP senator to vote against the measure.

Sen. Brown, whose state is home to one of the largest U.S. solar manufacturing companies, said in a floor speech Tuesday he was defending U.S. manufacturing.

“You can’t say you want American manufacturing to lead the world and then allow Chinese companies, subsidized always by their government, to skirt the rules and dump solar panels into the U.S.,” he said.

Manchin, the chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, was the only Democrat to attach his name as a co-sponsor of the joint resolution of disapproval. He argued the U.S. cannot continue to let China “get away” with laundering solar energy components through other nations with “absolutely no consequences.”

“Let me be clear: America will never be energy secure or independent if we can’t provide the resources we need, and it would be foolish of us in Congress to allow these waivers to continue any longer,” Manchin said in a statement.

On the other hand, eight House Republicans voted against the resolution last week, with some arguing it would cost solar jobs in their districts.

George Hershman, CEO of utility solar company SOLV Energy, recently called Republican support for the resolution “disappointing,” given how many solar projects are cropping up in red congressional districts.

“The largest solar districts in the country are Republican. That’s where the job impacts are going to be,” he told POLITICO last month. “I mean, I’m as disappointed with Democrats that might sign on to [the resolution] as House Republicans that understand the job creation of solar in their districts.”

Abigail Ross Hopper, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association, called on Biden to “quickly and decisively” veto the resolution.

“Energy workers across the country are looking to President Biden to protect their livelihoods,” she said in a statement.

The vote Wednesday is part of a wider trend of resolutions brought under the Congressional Review Act, which requires only a simple majority to pass the Senate, to undo parts of the Biden administration’s regulatory agenda.

The Senate also voted 50-48 on Wednesday to pass a resolution that would overturn the Biden administration’s protections under the Endangered Species Act for the lesser prairie-chicken, a wild bird found in five states. The White House said Wednesday that Biden will veto that resolution, as well.

Alex Guillén contributed to this report.

Telangana: Sharmila sends truck full of damaged crops to KCR

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) leader YS Sharmila on Tuesday sent a truck loaded with damaged crops to chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao and said that she intends to “wake the CM up from his deep slumber”.

She said that the truck bears farmers’ tears and demanded a compensation of Rs 30,000 per acre of damages rendered to the farmers due to the recent rains.

Exhibiting the truck to the media, the YSRTP chief said, “Today, we are sending this load of the damaged crop to KCR so that, at least during the election year, he will wake up from deep sleep and extend appropriate compensation to farmers. It is estimated that the crop loss is around 10 lakh acres, but not even a single official or MLA has visited the farmers and inspected the loss.”

    MS Education Academy

She alleged that all the MLAs are busy clicking photographs in the newly built secretariat which cost Rs 1600 crores, while farmers had to raise loans at high interest and also sell their jewellery for crops.

“In the last nine years, the cumulative crop loss has been estimated to be more than Rs 14,000 crores, but this reckless government has no concept of crop insurance,” she added.

Sharmila said that when there is no crop insurance, the government should extend the compensation. She added that KCR’s promise of Rs 10,000 per acre is insignificant.

“He said that the amount would be delivered by the time he returned home. Has he not returned home yet?” she said.

The YSRTP leader also demanded that paddy procurement should begin functioning immediately.

“The assurance to set up 7500 IKP centres also failed and less than 2500 were set up. We demand that the centres be established as an emergency,” said Sharmila.

“Is this the bharosa and is this kisan sarkar? A sarkar that doesn’t give crop insurance, doesn’t extend input subsidies, and fails on every front when it comes to the rescue of farmers?” said the YSRTP leader slamming the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) catchphrases ‘raithu bharosa’ and ‘ab ki baar kisan sarkar’.

  • ‘The cost is crazy’: fighting in Sudan sends food prices soaring

‘The cost is crazy’: fighting in Sudan sends food prices soaring

    [ad_1]

“I haven’t sold anything since 6am today,” said Adam Musa, a vegetable seller at Omdurman’s open-air market, as fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces raged a few miles away. “There are no people buying.”

Musa, 55, faced two problems: a lack of customers, and an inability on the part of those who did come to pay what he was charging.

His costs had increased sharply since violence broke out in Omdurman’s neighbouring city of Khartoum and elsewhere around Sudan on 15 April. In particular, fuel costs have soared, affecting the prices of all commodities, as fuel stations have closed down and petrol supplies have moved over to the black market.

“The cost of transporting is crazy,” he said. “I used to pay 1,500 SDG [Sudanese pounds; about £2] to transport my vegetables from Al-Shaabi souk on the other side of Omdurman. Now it is 10,000 SDG [£13.40]. I understand why it is so expensive. The transporters buy their fuel from the black market. God, make our lives easier.”

Only about 50% of the stalls at the market were open, and those who had ventured out looking for food faced price rises across the board: a kilo of beef up from 3,500 to 8,800 SDG; a kilo of tomatoes up from 330 to 3,000 SDG; a small bag of onions up from 6,000 to 10,000 SDG. Sugar, a vital commodity in Sudan, rose from 6,000 SDG for a 10kg basket to 10,000 SDG before disappearing from the market altogether.

Despite the sound of gunfire, the looting and the security vacuum, the dominant conversation among people in Omdurman is how expensive life has become.

Khamiesa Nimir, 44, a mother of eight, said she had fled the neighbourhood where she lived to the north of Omdurman because the fighting was getting close and armed robberies were taking place. “You can’t walk along the street alone,” she said.

Nimir said the cost of food and transport was rapidly rising beyond her reach. “My children haven’t had food since yesterday,” she said, adding that she had begged the driver of the minibus that brought her to this part of Omdurman to charge her 300 SDG instead of the 500 he had initially demanded.

“We are so poor … I was hoping to go to my mother in South Kordofan [a state on the border with South Sudan], but the bus ticket is unaffordable for me and my children,” she said.

As black smoke rose to the east, gunfire could be heard from inside the market as stallholders tried to scare away thieves.

“This is normal, they are chasing robbers, especially from the gold market,” a falafel stallholder said as he tried to reassure a woman who had begun to run away when she heard the firing. “You need to be extremely careful,” he told the woman. “They will take everything you have, even the plastic bag you are carrying, let alone the mobile phone in your pocket.”

El-Daw Ali, 63, a father of seven who owns a small restaurant in Ombadah, in west Omdurman, said the cost of a meal for one consisting of four small pieces of fish had doubled from 500 to 1,000 SDG since the fighting began.

Ali’s usual source of fish is the big fish market in Khartoum, located on the west bank of the Nile, but it has been forced to shut down by the fighting.

“I went to buy fish from small fishermen on the White Nile banks instead,” Ali said. “I had to cross past RSF forces who are deployed on the streets along the way. The fighting was going on around me. But what can I do? The situation is awful, I just hope things will calm down.”

He apologised to an elderly woman who in normal times he would not charge. “I’m really sorry, I can’t help you today,” he said. “You need to pay to get the fish.”

Watch: Sultan Al Neyadi sends back critical research sample from ISS

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) on Tuesday announced Sultan Al Neyadi along with his crew was responsible for sending back critical research samples on the Dragon cargo spacecraft before its return from the 27th contracted cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

The spacecraft carrying approximately 1950 kg of valuable scientific experiments and other cargo back to Earth, splashed down off the coast of Tampa, Florida in the US on Sunday at 12:58 UAE time.

Al Neyadi, who has been working on scientific experiments on the ISS, completed the stowage of critical research samples along with his Expedition 69 crew members, that include NASA’s Flight Engineers Stephen Bowen, Woody Hoburg and Frank Rubio. Al Neyadi further accessed the Minus Eighty-Degree Laboratory Freezer (MELFI) on the ISS, that can reach temperatures to a low of -100°C, to preserve some samples before sending them to Earth and was also involved in loading the used station hardware inside the Dragon spacecraft.

    MS Education Academy

    Watch the video below

Some of the scientific investigations that were returned to Earth include the following:

    • Space tomato harvest: Studying the growth, nutritional value, and microbial safety of dwarf tomatoes grown in a miniature greenhouse aboard the ISS, which could improve food systems and horticultural therapy on Earth.
    • Growing higher quality crystals: Testing a crystal growth method for silicon-germanium (SiGe) semiconductors in space, with potential applications in solar cells and electronics.
    • Analysing aging arteries: Monitoring arterial changes in astronauts to identify cardiovascular risks and provide insight for prevention and treatment of arterial stiffness on Earth.
    • Fire safety: Investigating burning and flammability in microgravity to enhance fire safety for future space missions, and improve combustion models for terrestrial applications.

Al Neyadi also activated the Dragon spacecraft’s monitoring tools and software and closed the vehicle’s hatch before it undocked from the ISS. After splashing down off the coast of Florida, the Dragon cargo carrying the experiments were transported to NASA’s Space Station Processing Facility at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, allowing researchers to collect data with minimal sample exposure to Earth’s gravity. The completed research and discarded lab gear will now be sent to scientists and engineers around the world for analysis.

  • Pak court sends Chinese man to 14-day remand on blasphemy charges

Pak court sends Chinese man to 14-day remand on blasphemy charges

    [ad_1]

Peshawar: A Pakistani anti-terrorism court has sent a Chinese national to jail on a 14-day judicial remand on blasphemy charges in the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province after he was arrested on Monday, according to media reports on Tuesday.

The police arrested the Chinese national identified as Tian on Sunday and on Monday he was shifted to Abbottabad via an Army helicopter due to security concerns as the police feared local people could harm him.

Tian was booked on blasphemy charges and sent to prison on a 14-day judicial remand by an Abbottabad anti-terrorism court on Monday, the Dawn newspaper reported.

    MS Education Academy

The Chinese citizen, a manager at the Dasu Hydropower Project, the biggest hydropower project in Pakistan, in the Upper Kohistan district of the province, allegedly made blasphemous remarks on Friday when the workers were going to perform the weekly prayer.

According to local people, the Chinese manager complained to workers at the dam that “precious time” was being lost due to prayer breaks.

The Dasu Hydropower Project is a major venture under the USD 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CEPC).

“We have arrested the foreigner suspect under blasphemy and terrorism charges and airlifted him from here to present him before the anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Abbottabad,” District Police Officer (DPO) Upper Kohistan, Mohammad Khalid, was quoted as saying in the report.

The suspect was later produced before the ATC amid strict security measures. The DPO said the Chinese national was moved to Islamabad onboard a helicopter on Monday evening, the report said.

The police registered a first information report (FIR) against Tian at the Dasu police station on Monday, hours after hundreds of residents and labourers working on the dam project blocked a key highway and rallied, demanding his arrest.

Under Pakistan’s tough blasphemy laws, the offence carries the death penalty.

According to the officer, police swung into action after getting reports on Sunday night that a local mob tried to break into a Chinese camp near the project site.

The mob was controlled, but they assembled again on Monday and blocked the Karakoram Highway, which links Pakistan with China, in a protest that lasted for over six to seven hours, demanding the Chinese national’s arrest.

The blocked highway was later reopened to traffic, and work resumed at the Dasu Dam after Tian’s arrest.

In Beijing, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said the embassy in Islamabad was looking into the incident.

“The Chinese government has always asked Chinese citizens overseas to abide by the laws and regulations of their host countries and respect local customs and traditions,” Wang told reporters at a regular news briefing.

Meanwhile, in a bid to defuse the situation, a team of Ulema from nearby towns and villages have set up a committee to examine the situation.

The meeting was attended, among others, by Upper Kohistan Deputy Commissioner Irfanullah Mehsood and District Police Officer Mohammad Khalid.

The participants urged the agitators not to take the law into their hands as police and the district administration were “handling the matter admirably”.

Blasphemy is a sensitive issue in Pakistan. On December 3, 2021, a Sri Lankan national working in a factory in Sialkot was lynched by a mob after workers accused him of blasphemy.

The Dasu Hydropower Project site was hit by a suicide bus blast in July 2021, in which 13 people, including nine Chinese nationals, were killed.

Nine Chinese nationals and two Frontier Corps soldiers were among those killed when the bus carrying Chinese engineers and workers to the site of the under-construction Dasu Dam exploded.

The Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), in a report in January 2022, stated that as many as 89 citizens were killed in 1,415 accusations and cases of blasphemy in the country since independence.

The report said that from 1947 to 2021, 18 women and 71 men were extra-judicially killed over blasphemy accusations. The allegations were made against 107 women and 1,308 men.

A large number of Chinese nationals have been working in Pakistan on various projects being undertaken under the CEPC.

UP RERA sends notice to M3M India for publicising project in violation of law

    [ad_1]

Noida: The Uttar Pradesh RERA on Saturday said it has issued a notice to developer M3M India for allegedly starting promotion and marketing for sale of units in a project in Noida without registering it with the authority in a direct violation of rules.

The UP Real Estate Regulatory Authority (UP RERA) also warned that if the unregistered project is not discontinued, its promoter can be imprisoned, and cautioned other developers to follow the RERA Act strictly, according to an official statement.

However, the Gurugram-based developer told PTI that the (promotional) campaign which is being projected in Noida, is “purely an extension of M3M’s corporate campaign” to bring awareness and sensitise people about the presence of M3M in the city.

    MS Education Academy

“UP RERA has issued notice to NOIDEA project of M3M India Pvt Ltd in Gautam Buddh Nagar after getting information about violation of RERA Act.

“UP RERA has found that M3M India Pvt Ltd has not completed the process of RERA registration of its project NOIDEA and started promotion and marketing for sale of the units, which is a direct violation of Section 3 of RERA Act,” UP RERA Secretary Rajesh Kumar Tyagi said in the statement.

“Under Section 59 of the Act, the promoter is liable to pay a penalty of up to 10 per cent of the project cost and/or a jail term of up to three years,” Tyagi said.

UP RERA said it has found that M3M India did not register the project with RERA and started publicity of the project. It also found that there was evidence of the promoter “continuously trying to take his project to the general public through various mediums”.

The RERA Act has been enacted to protect the interests of homebuyers and to develop the real estate sector, the RERA secretary said.

“Any arbitrariness committed by builders prior to the enactment of the RERA Act in the real estate sector in Uttar Pradesh will now be dealt with strict actions. If any other promoters of the state are also found involved in such violations, there will be no delay in the actions,” Tyagi added.

The UP RERA has instructed promoters of M3M India to “strictly comply” with Section 3/59, which bars a promoter from publicity of any housing project without first getting it registered with the state’s RERA.

When contacted, M3M India said the particular campaign mentioned by the UP RERA is not publicity of the project NOIDEA.

“We would like to clarify that the campaign which is being projected in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, is purely an extension of M3M’s corporate campaign to bring awareness and sensitise people about the presence of M3M in the city. We have at no point publicised the project,” M3M India told PTI in a statement.

“M3M is a law-abiding developer and operates on the principles of corporate governance and ethics, adhering to all the guidelines and policies issued by the state government. M3M India has committed a large investment in Uttar Pradesh, mostly Noida, and will also ensure jobs to thousands of people in the area,” the developer added.

RSS leader Ram Madhav sends defamation suit to Satyapal Malik

    [ad_1]

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Ram Madhav has issued a defamation notice to former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satya Pal Malik in response to his remarks during an interview in which he claimed Madhav attempted to influence him over a health insurance scheme deal involving a Rs 300 crore kickback.

Malik stated in October 2021 that a top RSS functionary offered him a bribe of Rs 300 crore to clear two papers pertaining to ‘Ambani’ when he was governor of J&K. Malik identified the RSS leader as Madhav in an interview with a YouTube channel.

On Tuesday, Congress convened a news conference during which they emphasised the interview and questioned why the CBI or ED is not knocking on Ram Madhav’s door in response to Satya Pal Malik’s charges.

    MS Education Academy

“Why isn’t the CBI or the ED knocking on Ram Madhav’s door now that a former governor has exposed him?” Khera wondered.

According to the Congress leader, the CBI publicly questioned the former governor at its headquarters, but Ram Madhav is yet to be summoned for interrogation.

“The ED-CBI raids and interrogates opposition leaders on a regular basis, so why not BJP leaders?” “What’s with the double standards?” he wondered.

“If Malik is telling the truth, why hasn’t the CBI, ED, or other agencies taken action against Madhav? Otherwise, there should be action taken against Malik if his claims are false,” he remarked.

According to Madhav, they are ‘completely false allegations.’

“The CBI has already conducted a thorough investigation into the matter. I intend to file defamation charges against those who spread these false allegations very soon,” the RSS leader stated.
