“I keep calling on Chief Justice Roberts to make a move and say something and solve this problem,” Durbin told host Jake Tapper. “He has the power to do it for the Roberts Court. But other justices can speak out as well.”
Durbin also said “everything is on the table” but didn’t offer any solutions that Congress could undertake on its own to impose policies on ethics for the nation’s highest court. But he said a strong policy is definitely needed to rebuild the court’s credibility.
“We need to change the image of this court. At this point it is at the lowest ebb in history,” Durbin said.

“No,” Sinema said, adding: “You don’t go from one broken party to another.”
Sinema, who left the Democratic Party in December 2022, has not said whether she plans to run for reelection in 2024.
“I’m not here to talk about elections today,” she Sunday when pressed about her plans.
If she does run, Sinema will, at the least, face challenges from Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego and Republican Mark Lamb, the sheriff of Pinal County. But the senator has used her party transition to call for and end to the rise in the partisanship in Congress.
“I would suggest that what I tried to do in the United States Senate right is to show that we have differences, differences which should be celebrated,” Sinema said Sunday. “That’s an important part of a democracy. But those differences shouldn’t stop us from getting things done.”

Kolkata: Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen has approached a district court in Birbhum district of West Bengal against the eviction notice issued by the Visva-Bharati University authorities in the ongoing dispute over 13 decimals of land.
The university authorities accuse Sen of illegally occupying the land within the varsity campus at Bolpur Santiniketan in the district.
The eviction notice was issued on April 20 asking the globally acclaimed economist to vacate the “disputed” 13 decimals of land by May 6. Sen is currently in the US.
On Friday, Sen’s counsel Gorachand Chakraborty informed media persons that an appeal against the eviction notice has already been filed at the district court of Suri in Birbhum district and the first hearing in the matter will be on May 15.
This week while interacting with the media persons, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack against the university authorities and even threatened to stage a sit-in demonstration in front of Sen’s residence if there is any attempt to forcefully impose the eviction.
The dispute over the 13 decimals of land started when the vice-chancellor of Visva-Bharati University, Bidyut Chakraborty started accusing Sen of illegally occupying 1.38 acres of land which is in excess of his legal entitlement of 1.25 acres.
However, the Nobel laureate refuted the allegation claiming the original 1.25 acres was gifted to his grandfather Late Kshitimohan Sen who was the second vice-chancellor of Visva-Bharati University.
Later, Sen’s father Late Asutosh Sen, who was also a professor with the same university, purchased the remaining 13 decimals of land, which is at the centre of the dispute.
The West Bengal government has recently transferred leasehold rights of the entire 1.38 acres of land to Sen to thwart any eviction attempt by the university authorities.
Kolkata: Visva-Bharati is hopeful that Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, who is accused of illegally holding a 13-decimal plot owned by the university, will respond by next week to an eviction notice sent to him.
Otherwise, the central university said it will take any decision deemed appropriate to recover “unauthorisedly occupied land”.
The eviction notice, pasted near the main gate of Sen’s Santiniketan residence on Friday, which was also mailed to him, said that the “proceedings will be disposed of on April 19 through a final order”.
The 89-year-old economist is now abroad.
“He (Sen) is yet to respond to the notice. We will wait for a few more days… till the middle of next week as specified in the notice,” Visva-Bharati spokesperson Mahua Banerjee told PTI on Saturday.
According to the notice, Sen or his advocates or authorised representatives may remain present during the disposal and passing of the final order at 12 noon on April 19. He can also submit a written statement by 6 pm on April 18 as the “last chance”.
The university has been claiming that Sen is in possession of 1.38 acres of land on the Santiniketan campus, which is in excess of his legal entitlement of 1.25 acres.
Denying the charges, Sen has repeatedly accused the varsity authorities of harassing him as he is a critic of several actions of Vice Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty, and voiced his objection to certain policies of the Narendra Modi government.

Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin announced Wednesday that she is running for a third term as Democrats look to hold onto control of their slim Senate majority.
“I’m committed to making sure that working people, not just the big corporations and ultra-wealthy, have a fighter on their side. With so much at stake, from families struggling with rising costs to a ban on reproductive freedom, Wisconsinites need someone who can fight and win,” Baldwin said in a statement.
Baldwin’s reference to reproductive freedom in the state comes as liberals flipped the ideological makeup of Wisconsin’s Supreme Court earlier this month. The new 4-3 majority is much more likely to strike down a controversial 19th-century abortion ban in the state.

Late Saturday, he tweeted about being injured during the parade in Hartford. “What can I say, I love a parade!” he wrote on Twitter.
“I did indeed fracture my femur after a fellow parade goer tripped & fell on me during the parade,” he said.
Because Democrats have a bare 50-49-1 Senate majority, the health and well-being of the Senate’s Democrats has attracted a lot of attention this year, with Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and John Fetterman (D-Pa.) among those who have missed sessions. Prominent Republicans have also been absent at times, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas. All the absences have hindered the Senate’s ability to get work done.
Blumenthal was in Hartford on Saturday to celebrate the championship that the Connecticut Huskies won last Monday by defeating San Diego State in Houston, their fifth national title. “Once again, the Huskies have inspired our state,” he and other members of the state’s delegation said in a celebratory statement Friday. “Five national championships don’t happen by accident.”
Fellow Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy said that nothing was going to stop Blumenthal from celebrating the team.
“FYI after he broke his femur he got back up, dusted himself off, and FINISHED THE PARADE. Most Dick Blumenthal thing ever,” Murphy tweeted late Saturday.
In his Sunday tweets, Blumenthal made it clear he had no regrets for his enthusiasm for his state’s college athletes, mentioning the Quinnipiac Bobcats squad that won the NCAA men’s hockey championship on Saturday.

Former President Donald Trump’s supporters should be able to protest “peacefully” if Trump is arrested for his involvement in possibly paying hush money during his 2016 presidential campaign, Sen. Mark Kelly said Sunday.
Trump’s supporters, “have First Amendment rights, and they should be able to exercise those peacefully,” Kelly (D-Ariz.) said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” But law enforcement officials should be prepared to “make sure it doesn’t rise to the level of violence,” he added.
Kelly pointed out that levying charges against the former president would be “unprecedented,” acknowledging that “there’s certainly risks involved” in doing so. However, “we’re a country of laws and nobody is above the law,” Kelly said.
