    New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday said it has conducted raids on the premises of jailed gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his associates, following which it seized Rs 75 lakh in cash along with some documents pertaining to nearly 200 bank accounts and 50 shell entities.

    The ED said that cash transactions worth more than Rs 50 crore were also detected during the searches.

    The raids were conducted at 15 locations.

    According to a source, the raids were conducted at the premises belonging to chartered accountant Sabeeh Ahmed, Asif Jafri, Seetaram Shukla, real estate developers Sanjeev Aggarwal and Deepak Bhargav, advocate-cum-accomplice Saulat Hanif Khan and other aides Khalid Zafar, Asad, Vadood Ahmed, Kali and Mohsin.

    “Atiq Ahmad and his aides were laundering the extortion money and the money which they collected through illegal activities. The documents seized during the raids confirm this. We seized papers of around 100 properties which are in the name of Atiq Ahmad’s close aides and other shell firms being run by them. These properties are suspected to be Atiq’s benami properties,” the ED said.

    Hyderabad: One person has been arrested at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport with 454 gms of gold, worth Rs 21,20,180, said Customs Air Intelligence officers of Hyderabad Customs on Sunday.

    According to the customs, the male passenger arrived at Hyderabad from Dubai and on thorough scanning of his baggage, gold weighing 455 gms having a value of Rs 21,20,180, concealed in the form of screws and rods (64 screws and 16 rods) of trolley wheels has been recovered.

    Further investigation into the matter is underway.

    Earlier, Hyderabad Customs seized 12 cut pieces of gold bar and gold chain weighing 807.10 grams worth nearly Rs 50 lakh, officials said on Tuesday.

    The male passenger who arrived from Doha by flight which landed at 08.45 am was searched following which the recovery was made.

    “On suspicion, the pax was searched and 12 cut pieces of gold bar & 1 gold chain totally weighing 807.10 Gms valued at Rs.49,71,736/- concealed inside chargeable torch light were found. The gold was seized by Hyderabad Customs,” the officials said.

    Further investigation into the matter is underway.

    New Delhi: Assets worth more than Rs 4,800 crore were seized during searches conducted by the Income Tax department against 2,841 groups in the last four financial years, the government informed Lok Sabha on Monday.

    Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said these searches are undertaken to find “suspected or identified large-scale tax evasion”.

    He shared the figures in this regard as part of a written reply furnished in the Lok Sabha.

    The data pertains to financial years 2019-20, 2020-22, 2021-22 and 2022-23 (provisional figures till January 2023) and Chaudhary said a total of 2,841 groups were searched by the I-T department leading to seizure of assets worth Rs 4,863.12 crore.

    The highest seizure of assets took place during the last fiscal of 2022-23 (data till January 2023) at Rs 1,533.23 crore with searches being conducted against a total of 602 groups, the data stated.

    Properties worth Rs 1,159.59 crore were seized after searches against 686 groups in 2021-22, assets worth Rs 880.83 crore were seized after action against 569 groups in 2020-21 and assets worth Rs 1,289.47 crore were seized during searches against 984 groups in 2019-20.

    Guwahati: At least 50 packets containing five lakh Yaba tablets worth crores of rupees were seized from a Mizoram-bound vehicle in Assam’s Silchar town on Monday, an official said, adding that two people were arrested in connection.

    According to the police, the vehicle had entered Assam through the inter-state border in Cachar.

    A senior police officer said that based on a tip-off, police apprehended the vehicle.

    The narcotics were peddled from Myanmar.

    “At least 50 packets containing the Yaba tablets were recovered,” the officer said, adding that the market value of the seized drugs is in crores.

    Two persons were also arrested on the charges of drug peddling.

    Lauding the police action, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted: “Cachar police recovered 50 packets containing 5 lakh Yaba tablets from a consignment coming from Myanmar via a neighboring state at Bagador, Silchar. Also apprehended two accused.

    “Great work Assam Police. Keep it up.”

    Hyderabad: The Air Intelligence unit of Hyderabad Customs has intercepted a passenger at RGI Airport who arrived from Dubai via Muscat and seized gold from him.

    On suspicion, the officials searched the baggage of the passenger and found two gold rods weighing 224 gms concealed in the handle of the trolley bag. The gold seized is valued at around Rs. 13.72 lakh rupees.

    Customs officers have seized the smuggled gold. Further investigation is in progress.

    Thane: Police have arrested four persons and seized from them bottles of cough syrup containing codeine, a banned narcotic drug, worth Rs 9.30 lakh in Thane district of Maharashtra, an official said on Sunday.

    The action was taken on Friday evening at Kontari village in Bhiwandi taluka of the district, he said. “Acting on a tip-off, a team of Kongaon police station raided a place and found that a consignment of cough syrup being transferred from a truck into a tempo.

    The police seized the goods worth Rs 9.30 lakh and arrested four persons,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (Bhiwandi) Kishore Khairnar said.

    The police also seized two vehicles – a truck and a tempo – collectively worth Rs 8.50 lakh, the official added.

    An offence under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Drugs and Cosmetics Act was registered against the arrested accused, he said.

    Vijayawada: The Customs Commissionerate in Vijayawada seized 12.97 kilogram of gold worth Rs 7.48 crore and nabbed four individuals during a special operation, officials said on Wednesday.

    According to officials, the gold was being smuggled to Andhra Pradesh.

    The operation involved interception at multiple locations across the state where the customs officials got hold of carriers of smuggled gold who were travelling in different modes of public transport.

    Four individuals carrying the precious yellow metal were arrested under provisions of the Customs Act 1962 and further investigations are on.

    According to a release, the customs officers seized 12.97 kg gold, estimated to be worth Rs 7.48 crore.
    “The gold seized predominantly included gold whose foreign markings were deliberately defaced to try and camouflage the smuggled nature of the gold,” it added.

    New Delhi: The Customs officials at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport here recovered 28 gold bars worth Rs 1.15 crore after rummaging two IndiGo flights, officials said.

    A Customs official said that the action was initiated on Saturday on the basis of intelligence inputs received by them.

    “One flight was routed from Bangkok to Kolkata to Delhi to Patna to Delhi and the other from Singapore to Hyderabad to Delhi. During rummaging, 28 gold bars (14 from each of flight) were recovered, which weighed 2,493 gm,” the official said.

    The recovered gold bars were seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act.
