Oppn stages protest march from Parliament to ED office, seek probe in Adani issue

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Opposition parties led by the Congress staged protest march from Parliament House to the office of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday, to hand over a complaint to the probe agency on the Adani issue.

The protest march was joined by the DMK, Left, Samajwadi Party, JDU, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction), and AAP, among others.

The Trinamool Congress is not participating in the protest march as it has said that it will raise its own issues in Parliament.

An impasse between the BJP and Opposition continued on the third day of Parliament as they traded charges over allegations against the Adani group and Rahul Gandhi’s comments in London.

Amid the ruckus, both Houses were adjourned till 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said there is no question of apology over Rahul Gandhi’s remarks and those demanding so must answer on Prime Minister Narendra Modi “humiliating” people of India with his comments abroad.

“We demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigation of Adani issue. However, the BJP doesn’t want a JPC as it will bring out the corruption and expose their real face. They wanted a JPC till they were in opposition, now they are scared,” leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said during the march.

Several opposition parties including the Congress, DMK, AAP, Left and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena faction among others have written to ED, seeking a probe regarding Adani issue.

The parties have urged the agency -to investigate “a relationship that has serious implications not just for our economy but, most importantly, our democracy”.

The opposition cited accusations against the Adani Group that say it has established a network of offshore shell companies and offshore funds linked to the group “for the purposes of artificially inflating stock valuations and to give a distorted picture with regard to the group companies’ financial health”.

The opposition further alleges a “clear causal link” between the offshore entities and the Adani Group’s Indian companies — a reference to Gautam Adani’s brother Vinod, who they say is “alleged to be the person crucial to setting up these networks”.

The opposition letter also alleged that the group “repeatedly exercised improper influence to obtain concessions and contracts from governments and regulated entities”.

Shia Muslims seek increased political representation

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Shia Muslim leaders are seeking increased political representation from the Narendra Modi government at the Centre and the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh.

Prominent Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawad said: “As the government is including Pasmandas (backward Muslims) in every scheme, they must also include Shia Muslims, who are suffering due to neglect by previous governments.”

“According to the Sachar Committee report, Muslims are very backward but Shias are more backward among the Muslims. No previous government has worked for the welfare of the Shia community, but today the Shia community demands better political and social representation from the Modi government at Centre and the Yogi government in the state.”

Continuing further, he said: “When I met Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the first time, I asked him to pay attention towards the state of our community. At this, the prime minister said that in fact he has a complaint that ‘you never make a complaint about the state of your community’.”

  • Florida Republicans seek ban on abortions after 6 weeks of pregnancy

Florida Republicans seek ban on abortions after 6 weeks of pregnancy

    [ad_1]

    abortion florida 33937

He told reporters after his address that he would sign the abortion bill into law.

Republicans have supermajorities in the House and Senate, so Democrats have no ability to stop the legislation from going forward.

The abortion proposal is a clear signal that DeSantis will support hard-right conservative priorities ahead of his likely 2024 election bid. Florida, once a perennial swing state, has shifted Republican in recent years and the governor has capitalized on the GOP electoral successes by supporting legislation that cracks down on illegal immigration, bans Florida Medicaid from paying for gender-affirming care and limits how race and gender identity can be taught in schools.

The governor last year also supported the state’s ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy and, after the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade, said that Florida would expand “pro-life protections.”

The proposal drew widespread criticism from Democrats, including from White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre who said the proposal would affect millions of women, both in Florida and its neighboring states that have stricter limits but whose residents rely on Florida to access abortions.

“We know that these bands are already having a devastating impact on women’s health,” she said. “Politicians like Governor DeSantis … espouse quote, freedom for all, unquote, while directly attacking the freedom to make one’s own health care decisions. Their rhetoric doesn’t come without consequences here.”

Senate President Kathleen Passidomo (R-Naples) unsuccessfully convinced House leaders last year to add exemptions for rape and incest victims to the 15-week ban. Florida Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book (D-Plantation), who worked with Passidomo last year on the exemptions, said on Tuesday that incest victims are already fleeing the state for treatment and the 6-week bill will only make things worse for them.

“If it’s a war they want, it’s a war they will get,” Book wrote in a statement. “This issue bridges the partisan divide, and we will not go down as easily as they believe.”

State Rep. Jenna Persons-Mulicka (R-Fort Myers) and state Sen. Erin Grall (R-Vero Beach), who filed legislation in their respective chambers, stated in their bills that the exemptions would apply to victims who have been pregnant for less than 15 weeks. They will require anyone seeking the exemptions to provide documentation, such as a court restraining order or police report, to prove they were victimized.

The lawmakers filed the bills on the first day of this year’s Legislative session after months of speculation that legislators would seek to further restrict abortion access. The 15-week ban that took effect in July is enforced but the state Supreme Court is currently weighing a legal challenge to it. Plaintiffs in the lawsuit argue the 15 week ban violates a state privacy clause that the Florida high court had previously cited to strike down abortion bans.

Republican legislative leaders had initially said any future bans would have to wait until the high court decides on the case.

On Tuesday, House Speaker Paul Renner (R-Palm Coast) said the current proposal includes a trigger provision that will enact the 6-week ban if the high court strikes down the privacy clause. Renner brought up the state’s argument in the Supreme Court case that the privacy clause relates to informational and data privacy rights.

“This is going ahead and having the conversation on where we want to land in Florida,” Renner said. “That’s where we’ve landed.”

The proposed measure would place Florida with six other states that have already approved 6-week bans, including Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Dakota and Oklahoma.

The bill also provides up to $30 million for the Florida Department of Health to create a statewide parenting support network. The network would beef-up state-funded services already offered to pregnant people by expanding resources to those who gave birth within one year. The measure also prohibits doctors from using telehealth services to consult with patients about treatment with abortion medications.

The head the Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates criticized the 6-week ban proposal, saying it would worsen the lives of parents statewide.

“This near total abortion ban has nothing to do with what is best for Floridians and everything to do with Ron DeSantis’ ambition to be president and what he thinks Republican primary voters want,” Alliance Director Laura Goodhue wrote in a statement.

Kelly Garrity contributed to this report.

Anantnag Patwar Association Stages Sit-in, Seek Prompt Redressal of Various Demands

CPI (M) Leader MY Tarigami Also Raises Voice in Favour of Striking Patwaris

    Waris Shah

Srinagar, Mar 7 (GNS): The Anantnag Patwar Association staged a sit-in protest at Achabal against the administration to press for an early redressal of their demands.

Talking to GNS, the Patwar Association said they have also been demanding a hike in pay scales for Patwaris, timely departmental promotion of Patwaris and Girdawars, a ban on direct recruitment of Tehsildars, construction of Patwar Khanas, creation of Patwar Halqas and Girdawar circles, timely conduct of DPCs, and an increase in their allowances.

“We are sitting here under the banner of All Jammu and Kashmir Patwari Association for the seventh consecutive day, to let the government know about our demands. We graduate patwaris have a grade pay issue which the government should consider.”

“Like other Education and Finance departments have handsome grade pay, and teachers have a grade pay of 2800, while account officers in the finance department have handsome grade pay. Similarly, we graduate Patwaris demand a genuine increase in our grade pay.”

“The other issue is that Girdawar circle and Pathwar Halqa are the same since the time of Maharaja Hari Singh. As we all are aware, so much development has been done since then we as such demand delimitation of Pathwar Halqa and Girdawar circle,” he said.

“We would also like to draw the keen interest of the administration towards the direct recruitment of Naib Tehsildars and we demand a 75:25 quota, like the one in vogue in the Union territory of Ladakh. Of the 75%, Girdawars and departmental Patwaris should be promoted to Naib Tehsildar”, he further said.

Meanwhile CPI (M) leader Mohamad Yousuf Tarigami has also urged the government to redress genuine demands of striking patwaris. “The strike of patwaris has paralysed the working in revenue department”, Tarigami said.

“The administration has been giving assurances and making promises that their genuine grievances would be redressed, but nothing seems to be happening on ground, forcing them to go on protest. The demands include increase in the grade pay of graduate patwaris, timely departmental promotion of patwaris, girdawaris, rent for Patwar Khanas (Private accommodation), construction of new Patwar Khanas, creation of new patwar halqas and Girdawar circles are all genuine demands, which the must be fulfilled without any further delay”, Tarigami in a statement issued here said.

He urged that the Government must talk to the representatives of the Association and take effective steps to settle their genuine demands. (GNS)

Widows of 3 jawans killed in 2019 Pulwama attack seek permission to end own lives

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Widows of three CRPF personnel killed in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack accused the Rajasthan government of not fulfilling its promises made to them and sought permission from Governor Kalraj Mishra to end their own lives, the BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Kirodi Lal Meena said on Saturday.

Meena has been sitting on a dharna here with the family members of the martyrs for the last few days.

He along with the wives of the CRPF personnel killed in the Pulwama attack went to Raj Bhawan to hand over a representation to the governor. After coming out from Raj Bhawant, they started moving towards the chief minister’s residence and were stopped by the police.

Meena alleged that police personnel pushed the women in which Manju Jat, the widow of Rohitashav Lamba got injured and was admitted to the hospital.

The BJP leader said that instead of fulfilling the demands of the families of the martyrs, the state government was taking recourse to “dictatorship”. “The police misbehaved with them even when they were protesting at the assembly gate recently,” he alleged.

Meena and the family members of the Pulwama terror attack martyrs handed over the representation in Raj Bhawan in which Manju Jat, Madhubala, Sundari Devi and Renu Singh sought permission for euthanasia.

Meena is sitting at dharna at Shaheed Smarak with the family members of the martyrs.

  • Private Schools In JK Seek PropertyTax Waiver

Private Schools In JK Seek PropertyTax Waiver

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Private Schools Association of Jammu and Kashmir (PSAJK) has urged the LG led administration to exempt educational institutes from the ambit of property tax.

In a statement, the Association said that the schools have suffered a lot during the last few years and this has plunged the majority of educational institutes into a financially precarious situation.

“Our schools are under huge debt. The inflation has broken the back of our institutes. We cannot go for a major fee hike as we have to consider the financial situation of the parents too. In such conditions when our hands are tied, the imposition of property tax will further burden us”, reads the statement.

The Association said that the imposition of any tax ultimately has to be borne by the end consumer and in case of schools it is the parents. “There are two ways where schools can absorb the shock of any more taxes. In the first case the parents have to bear the burden as the tax component will directly reflect in the fee of children. Secondly if parents are not in a position to pay more, then the school will have to go for cost cutting exercise. Schools will downsize or remove facilities aiming to provide quality education to children,” the spokesperson said. “In all cases it is the society that will suffer.”

The Association said that under the New Education Policy (NEP) schools have to upgrade their facilities. “We have to meet the standards of NEP and for that we need to upgrade. But when we are financially unstable how can we provide quality education to children,” said the Spokesperson.

The Association appealed to the government to reconsider their decision to impose property tax on educational institutes keeping in view its impact on the schools and parents. (GNS)

  • Won’t let those who seek to marginalise minorities prevail: Lalu

Won’t let those who seek to marginalise minorities prevail: Lalu

    [ad_1]

RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav on Saturday called for the protection of the rights of religious minorities.

The former Bihar chief minister who recently returned to India following a successful kidney transplant surgery in Singapore last December, stated that he will not let those who seek to marginalise minorities prevail.

“No one can break us until we unify. We must save the country. We must safeguard the constitution, move Bihar ahead, and advance India. We must preserve the rights of minorities,” he told a massive crowd at Bihar’s Purnia.

“We’re always chanting Hindu, Hindu, Hindu. We are Hindus…but what crime have minorities committed that you are attempting to marginalise them? “In any situation, I will not let them succeed,” Yadav stated, adding that it is time for the ‘exit of the Narendra Modi regime.’

The RJD leader dubbed Seemanchal the ‘most secular’ region and urged people to stay united and recognise those attempting to mislead.

With Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Tejashwi Yadav conducting a combined rally in Purnia, Bihar’s political temperature is rising. Tejashwi Yadav attacked Amit Shah earlier today, saying that he is visiting the state frequently because he is afraid of losing seats in the state during the 2024 general elections.

“Today is a ‘jansabha,’ and thousands of people are expected to attend. The BJP is worried about losing seats as a result of our grand alliance with chief minister Nitish Kumar, which is why home minister Amit Shah is visiting Bihar repeatedly to gain control,” he stated.

The remarks followed Shah’s recent remarks at a rally in Lauruia, West Champaran district, in which he blamed Nitish Kumar for plunging Bihar into ‘jungle raj,’ which he blamed on the former RJD-Congress leadership in the state. He also compared the JD(U)-RJD coalition to ‘attempts to mix oil with water.’

  • Tester will seek reelection, bolstering Dems in 2024

Tester will seek reelection, bolstering Dems in 2024

    [ad_1]

    gettyimages 1447016521

But Tester’s decision, along with Sen. Sherrod Brown’s (D-Ohio) bid for a fourth term, gives Democrats a pathway to keep their majority. The party currently holds 51 seats, meaning it can only afford a net loss of one seat in 2024 provided Democrats maintain control of the White House. And with sparse pick-up opportunities next year, the most straightforward path is returning the party’s incumbents to office, meaning Democrats must win reelection in at least two of the three red states: Ohio, West Virginia and Montana.

Tester has won races under myriad scenarios since entering national politics. He defeated former GOP Sen. Conrad Burns in 2006, successfully split tickets with former President Barack Obama in 2012 and survived a difficult midterm cycle in 2018 by defeating now-Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-Mont.). During that race, Tester raised the ire of former President Donald Trump by helping sink his pick for the Veterans’ Affairs Department, now-Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas).

Both Rosendale and Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-Mont.) are weighing a bid against Tester; Zinke passed on the 2018 race by joining Trump’s cabinet as secretary of the Interior. Republicans are also keeping their eyes on Gov. Greg Gianforte and state Attorney General Austin Knudsen to mount potential GOP campaigns to unseat Tester.

Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) is chairing the GOP campaign arm this cycle, adding intrigue to Tester’s bid after Tester helped recruit former Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, a Democrat, to run against Daines in 2020. Daines campaigned with Rosendale in the fall of 2018 as the GOP pressed to beat Tester, albeit unsuccessfully.

“Jon Tester just made the same mistake Steve Bullock did in 2020. Both should have ended their political careers on their terms. Instead, they each will have their careers ended by Montana voters,” Daines said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.

The Montana Democrat, who chairs the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, is known for working across the aisle and played a key role in negotiating the Senate’s bipartisan infrastructure bill last Congress. He also teamed up with Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) to pass legislation that broadened the Department of Veterans’ Affairs coverage for toxic exposure related to burn pits.

Tester has a more liberal voting record than Manchin but a more centrist one than Brown. He did not serve as a public roadblock to President Joe Biden’s agenda like Manchin and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.), though he does occasionally vote against the party leadership, like on a bid to raise the minimum wage to $15. More recently, he criticized the Biden administration over its handling of a Chinese government spy balloon that flew over Montana.

Tester also has a unique personal profile: He’s a working farmer who lost three fingers in a meat grinder as a child and is known in Washington and Montana for blunt talk and the occasional expletive. His political skills will be put to the test, though, as Montana grew significantly during the pandemic, meaning he will face thousands of new voters next November.

While Tester has yet to announce his campaign team, his 2018 campaign manager Christie Roberts is expected to stay on for another consecutive cycle at the Democratic Senate campaign arm in a senior role.
