Tripura Assembly polls: Voting begins amid tight security

    [ad_1]

Agartala: The polling for the Tripura Assembly elections began amid tight security on Thursday.

The voting started at 7 am and will continue till 4 pm.

According to Election Commission, over 28.14 lakh electorates of which 14,15,233 are male voters, 13,99,289 are woman voters and 62 are of the third gender, are eligible to cast their franchise. The voting is underway at 3,337 polling stations.

Adequate security arrangements have been made for the polls. The state has 97 all-women-managed police stations. It has 94,815 voters in the 18-19 age group and 6,21,505 in the 22-29 age group. The highest number of voters are in the 40-59 age group at 9,81,089.

The fate of the 259 candidates will be sealed on 60 Assembly seats today.

A triangular contest is on the cards as Congress and CPIM, which have been arch rivals for years, stitched a pre-poll alliance to defeat the ruling BJP while the BJP which is looking to retain its power is contesting in alliance with Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) and the Tipra Motha which is being seen as a kingmaker in case of a hung assembly scenario, emerged as an influential regional party floated by the royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma in 2021. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress has also put up candidates on several seats.

The BJP is contesting on 55 seats and its ally, IPFT, on six seats. But both allies have fielded candidates in the Ampinagar constituency in Gomati district.

The Left will contest on 47 and Congress on 13 seats, respectively.Of the total 47 seats, the CPM will contest 43 seats while the Forward Bloc, Communist Party of India ( CPI) and Revolutionary Socialist Party ( RSP) will contest one seat each.

Over 28 lakh voters are eligible to cast their votes in the election for the 60-member assembly in the border state.

Tripura is the first state to go to the polls this year. While polling for Nagaland and Meghalaya assemblies will be held on February 27, five more states face elections this year in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

A total of 259 candidates, including 20 women, are in the fray in Tripura. The counting of votes will be done on March 2.

This time Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded 12 women candidates. The BJP which had never won a single seat in Tripura before 2018, stormed to power in the last election in alliance with IPFT and had ousted the Left Front which had been in power in the border state for 35 years since 1978.

BJP won 36 seats in the assembly and got 43.59 per cent of the votes in the 2018 election. The CPI (M) won 16 seats with a 42.22 per cent vote share. The IPFT won eight seats and Congress could not open its account.

The BJP is exuding confidence that it will improve its performance. Party’s top leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and party chief JP Nadda campaigned in the state.

Apart from national leaders, the star campaigners, Chief Ministers of Assam and Uttar Pradesh, Himanta Biswa Sarma and Yogi Adiyanath respectively also campaigned in Tripura.

On the other hand, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, and senior party leaders Brinda Karat, Prakash Karat, Mohammad Salim and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar campaigned for the party in Tripura.

Congress campaigners included party leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Dipa Dasmunshi and Ajoy Kumar. However, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra did not campaign in the state.

The CPI-M-led Left Front ruled the state for nearly four decades, with a gap between 1988 and 1993, when the Congress was in power but now both the parties joined hand with an intention to oust BJP from power.

Tipra Motha, which has raised demand for Greater Tipraland, could upset the calculations of both BJP and Left-Congress alliance. Tipra Motha, chaired by Tripura royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, is contesting at 42 seats.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress may act as a spoiler as it is contesting 28 seats and 58 independent candidates are also trying out their luck.

Chief Minister Manik Saha is contesting the polls from Town Borodowali. Congress has fielded Ashish Kumar Saha against him. Manik Saha replaced Biplab Kumar Deb as chief minister in May last year.

Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma is contesting from Charilam seat.

Tripura BJP state president Rajiv Bhattacharjee is contesting from the Banamalipur constituency. Biplab Deb earlier represented the seat.

CPI(M) state general secretary Jitendra Choudhury is contesting from the Sabroom constituency.

The BJP has fielded Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik from the Dhanpur constituency. Bhoumik is the first woman from Tripura to become a Union minister. Tipra Motha has fielded Amiya Dayal Noatia against Bhoumik in the seat.

BJP has fielded sitting MLA Pranajit Singh Roy from the Radhakishorpur constituency. He is pitted against CPI-ML’s Partha Karmakar.

BJP’s Papiya Dutta will face Congress candidate Sudip Roy Barman in Agartala.

In Karbook, CPI(M) candidate Priyamani Debbarma is contesting against BJP’s Ashim Tripura and Tipra Motha’s Sanjay Manik.

In the run-up to the elections, Chief Minister Manik Saha said that the demand for a “Greater Tipraland” is not possible as Tripa Motha Party is not able to define the boundary.

“Greater Tipraland, we have heard this name before also. In every Assembly election, some or other slogans like Tipraland are created and after every 5 years, new local parties emerge and raise such slogans. I have repeatedly asked where is the boundary, sometimes they say that Greater Tipraland is in Bangladesh, and sometimes they say that there are some parts of Assam and Mizoram too. This means they are in a fix. What exactly they are trying to say and want to say, we are not able to understand anything. When we talk about this matter, they say it is linguistic culturally, they are not able to define or describe properly,” Saha said during an exclusive interview with the ANI, on the demand of Greater Tipraland.

He had also termed the democratic ouster of the Left Front government in Tripura in the last assembly polls by the BJP as “historic” and something “that has barely happened in India’s history”.

“It’s a history that after 35 years of rule, BJP removed the Communist government here in a democratic way…It has barely happened in India’s history,” he said.

“Communists committed murders and violence here, so it is important that they do not return to power as violence cannot lead to development. Numerous people had to sacrifice their lives. All of us are very concerned,” Saha added.

BJP in its manifesto promised welfare proposals such as special canteen meals to the poor three times a day at Rs 5 each, a Balika Samridddhi bond of Rs 50,000 to each underprivileged family on the birth of a girl child and scooters for meritorious college girls.

The manifesto also promises smartphones to 50,000 meritorious students, two free LPG cylinders to all beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, land deeds to those without any holdings, and an annual payout of Rs 3,000 to all landless farmers.

The counting of votes will take place on March 2, coinciding with the date of the Meghalaya and Nagaland Assembly polls results.

Kanpur: Bodies of Pramila Dixit and her daughter Neha, the two women who died in a fire during an anti-encroachment drive here two days ago, were cremated on Wednesday at the Valmiki Ghat in Bithoor amidst tight security.

Kanpur commissioner Raj Shekhar and senior police officials of the district were present at the cremation.

The bodies had reached Madauli village late on Tuesday night after the post-mortem.

    What happened earlier

In an anti-encroachment drive gone awry in Madauli village in Uttar Predesh’s Kanpur, Shivam’s mother Pramila Dixit (44) and sister Neha Dixit (21) were charred to death in the afternoon of Monday, 13 February, after being “trapped” in a thatched hut.

Pramila’s husband Krishan Gopal Dixit also sustained burn injuries in the incident, but his condition is said to be stable.

The family of the deceased have alleged that the makeshift hut was set on fire by the officials of the revenue and police department led by SDM Gyaneshwar Prasad.

Soon after, senior police officials including Kanpur Dehat superintendent of police BBGTS Moorty, Kanpur ADG (Zone) Alok Singh reached the spot to take stock of the situation on the ground.

Relatives and family members of the mother-daughter duo also staged a dharna in the Dehat district of Kanpur.

However, they agreed to allow the district police to take the bodies for a post-mortem examination.

GOP senator: ‘Vast majority’ want ‘a different direction’ than Rick Scott on Social Security

“We’re never going to not fund defense. But at the same time we — every single year, we look at how we make it better,” Rounds said. “And I think it’s about time we start talking about Social Security and making it better.”

In his State of the Union speech last week, President Joe Biden highlighted Scott’s (R-Fla.) “Rescue America” agenda released during the 2022 campaign, which would sunset all federal programs including Social Security and Medicare. Those programs don’t currently require ongoing congressional approval, so the plan puts benefits in jeopardy, Biden asserted.

Some Republicans — a handful of whom heckled the president for the statement in his address Tuesday — have characterized the threat as dishonest. The plan’s text online states: “All federal legislation sunsets in 5 years. If a law is worth keeping, Congress can pass it again.”

“We should be saying, let’s plan now, so that Social Security has a long run ahead of it, more than 75 years. And why don’t we start talking about the long-term plans, instead of trying to scare one another?” Rounds said Sunday.

He said he did see ways to make Social Security and Medicare better.

Possible reforms to Social Security could include “moving up by a couple of months” the time when full benefits start, or changing the amount of income subject to Social Security-related taxes, Rounds said.

“Simply looking away from it and pretending like there’s no problems with Social Security is not an appropriate or responsible thing to do,” Rounds said. He added: “Republicans want to see Social Security be successful and be improved.”

J&K: Car showroom bulldozed amid tight security arrangement

    [ad_1]

Jammu: Authorities on Saturday demolished a car showroom during an anti-encroachment drive to retrieve state land here, a week after abandoning the exercise in the face of stone-pelting by a group of agitated locals.

The showroom of M G Hector at Malik market along Narwal bypass was demolished by the revenue department under stringent security arrangements, officials said.

They said police and paramilitary personnel were deployed in strength in the locality and adjoining Bhatindi, Sunjwan and Channi before the bulldozers were moved in the morning to bring down the building.

The bypass from Bhatindi to the Sunjwan Army garrison was also closed for vehicular traffic, while security forces were seen patrolling the interior localities to maintain law and order.

On February 4, the area witnessed stone-pelting when the joint teams of revenue and police officials started razing the building, forcing them to abandon the process.

Several persons were arrested following the clashes which had left a policeman injured.

Even as major political parties including the National Conference, the Congress and the PDP have voiced their concerns against the drive and demanded an immediate end to it, the authorities have so far retrieved more than 10 lakh kanals of land across Jammu and Kashmir after the Commissioner Secretary, Revenue department, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri directed all deputy commissioners to ensure 100 percent removal of encroachments from the state land including Roshni and Kahcharai (grazing) on January 7.

‘Not freebies but social security’, Gehlot announces Rs 25L healthcare scheme, OPS

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: After presenting the state Budget and announcing sops for the public, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said on Friday that the schemes announced are part of social security, and not freebies, as he announced old pension scheme (OPS) for almost all the serving and retired employees in the state.

The Chiranjivi Yojna healthcare scheme has been increased to Rs 25 lakh per family and it is for every citizen of the state which will be available in empannelled private hospitals, Gehlot said.

“People understand that this is not for elections,” Gehlot said.

The Chief Minister said the aim of the government is to provide social security and that is why LPG cylinder will be provided for Rs 500 which will benefit 76 lakh families.

The children of Covid victims will get government jobs when they attain the age, the CM said.

The state government also announced free electricity of 100 unit to all domestic consumers.

“My focus is on people, not elections,” he said.

The Budget also announced relaxation on other taxes and stamp duty, including relaxation in electricity duty on solar energy from 60 paise per unit to 40 paise per unit. This will also benefit net metering consumers on residential buildings along with other consumers.

One-time tax on four-wheeler diesel vehicle has been reduced by 2 percent to make it at par with petrol vehicle.

The Budget announced 10 percent reduction in tax on stage carriage buses running on rural and other routes in Rajasthan, along with exemption of motor vehicle tax on city/urban bus service on new or retrofitted CNG buses.

It announced increase in exemption from 5 percent to 10 percent per year on vehicles registered in other states and assigned in Rajasthan.

Requirement of furnishing tax clearance certificate (TCC) every time for transport vehicles in the state will be done away with, he announced.

Facility for e-licence and e-registration certificate will be created which will remove the requirement of the fee of Rs 200 for smart card, the CHief Minister said.

Also, full exemption on interest and penalty on outstanding demand computed till December 31, 2022 along with 50 percent rexemption on the original demand was also announced, which can be availed till June 30, 2023.

  • Provide new vehicle or remove security: Suspended BJP MLA Raja Singh

Provide new vehicle or remove security: Suspended BJP MLA Raja Singh

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh, who is still in suspension from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), demanded the ruling BRS government here to provide him with a new Bullet Resistant (BR) vehicle or withdraw the vehicle and security he currently has.

On Thursday, the black coloured BR vehicle’s front tyre had to be removed after the vehicle was on the run on the Mangalhat police station ground. Raja Singh was returning home after attending the assembly session when the driver noticed the vehicle tyre getting damaged.

“After great difficulty we managed to bring the vehicle to the roadside. We were going at a low speed hence any major accident averted. Otherwise, the vehicle would have overturned and consequences would have been fatal,” T Raja Singh told media persons.

The MLA said home minister Mohd Mahmood Ali should be ashamed of showing negligent attitude in taking care of the security of the sitting MLA. “Check and replace the vehicle at the earliest or you have other plans?” questioned Raja Singh. The BJP MLA is currently out on bail, which was given to him by the Telangana high court after it quashed his imprisonment under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act in the Prophet remarks case.

Previously, Raja Singh’s vehicle developed technical snags forcing it to be taken for repairs. The MLA then also demanded replacement of his vehicle. Singh is provided with 2+2 round the clock security and a BR vehicle.

    Bypassing high court’s gag order

The BJP legislator passed derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammed last year in response to the state government allowing comedian Munawar Faruqui to hold a show in Hyderabad. Raja Singh’s comments sparked several protests and he was soon arrested by the city police and eventually put in prison.

Hit with a gag order from the Telangana High Court, suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA T Raja Singh seems to be subverting his restrictions by passing communal and inflammatory remarks from outside the state.

While quashing Singh’s detention in jail under the PD Act last year, the High Court, as part of its bail order, warned the BJP MLA was told not to make provocative speeches or speak in public. So far, a case has already been registered against him in recent times for violating the court orders (with the Mangalhat police station). Raja Singh was served another notice by the Hyderabad police on January 29 for a hate speech in Mumbai.

His statements come just months ahead of the Telangana state elections, which are due this year. With restrictions on him, Raja Singh is currently unable to carry out political campaigns or hold public rallies as he would have ideally done in the run-up to the polls. It is unsure how the state judiciary will react to him making speeches outside, with the logic that it is beyond the HC’s jurisdiction.

  • Biden on Republicans: ‘Their dream is to cut Social Security and Medicare’

Biden on Republicans: ‘Their dream is to cut Social Security and Medicare’

    [ad_1]

    biden 65160

After running through his usual economic talking points, Biden capitalized on his handling of a tense exchange the previous night with Republicans for wanting “Medicare and Social Security to sunset.” While Biden didn’t name Sen. Rick Scott during his State of the Union speech, he did so on Wednesday, pulling out the Florida Republican’s “Rescue America” pamphlet that calls for all federal legislation to include such a provision.

Then the president quoted Sen. Ron Johnson’s (R-Wis.) stance on the issue, prompting the crowd to boo.

“They sure didn’t like me calling them on it,” Biden said, noting that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-Ga.) stood up and called him a “liar” during Tuesday night’s speech. “Look, a lot of Republicans — their dream is to cut Social Security and Medicare. Well, let me just say this. It’s your dream, but I’m going to use my veto pen and make it a nightmare.”

A post-State of the Union barnstorming swing has become a traditional part of the calendar for modern presidents, with great thought put into the location for a visit inherently bound to receive more media attention than an average trip.

For the Biden White House, it was always going to be Wisconsin. White House aides suggested that a lot of the year ahead will look just like this day. They believe that a message of blue collar populism works for the president, saying he is the first Democratic standard bearer in decades to successfully chase a demographic drifting steadily toward Republicans.

A labor hall filled with union workers was considered a perfect backdrop for this particular president. Biden aides said they hoped to fill his schedule with events like this one — and like last week’s twin infrastructure events in Maryland and New York — to showcase the president’s record in creating jobs and tangible, real-world projects.

Wisconsin, in many ways, has become the preeminent swing state. It was one of the trio of Great Lakes states — along with Michigan and Pennsylvania — that Biden won back from Donald Trump in 2020. And while the president may still be a month or more from announcing his reelection plans, most paths for a Biden second term run right through the same three states.

Michigan and Pennsylvania trended more toward the Democrats in the 2022 midterms than did Wisconsin, which reelected a Democratic governor but also a Republican senator in Johnson. Biden’s margin of victory in Wisconsin in 2020 was fewer than 21,000 votes — his smallest advantage of the three former “Blue Wall” states — but his advisers believe that his pro-union and manufacturing message will continue to play well in the state.

Moreover, Biden advisers are looking at the electoral map and see limited options. Many in the party believe that Florida — which has dramatically trended rightward in recent years and is home to the GOP’s two top leading 2024 candidates — is a lost cause. Still, Biden will make a stop there Thursday. But even the most bullish Biden advisers concede Florida is an uphill climb, and a loss there, if combined with defeats in Georgia and Arizona — two states Biden barely captured two years ago — would make his path to victory very narrow. It also would make Wisconsin essential.

Biden has been to Michigan and Pennsylvania more often to this point in his term, and aides said to expect travel to Wisconsin to ramp up. It’s been decided by less than a percentage point in four of the last six presidential races, including in 2016 and 2020.
