Secretary chairs felicitation ceremony regarding recognition of Pulwama in health sector

Says govt committed to provide best healthcare, high-tech equipments to Health centres of JK
Pulwama, April 15 (GNS): Secretary, Health and Medical Education, Bhupinder Kumar, today presided over a felicitation ceremony held to recognize outstanding performance of Pulwama district in health sector.
District Development Commissioner, Pulwama, Baseer-Ul-Haq Choudhary, Director Health Services Kashmir, Dr Mushtaq Ahmed Rather, Deputy Commissioner Shopian, Sachin Kumar, SSP Pulwama, Mohammad Yousuf, CMOs Pulwama and Shopian, State Tuberculosis Officer, District Tuberculosis Officers, doctors, paramedical staff, health workers and other concerned were present on the occasion.
On the occasion, the participants took an oath against drug abuse.
Various speakers emphasized the need to raise awareness about the ill-effects of drug abuse and help the affected people reach de-addiction centres. They appealed to the gathering, especially the youth, to unite and fight against drug addiction, terming the menace as one of the stumbling blocks for India to achieve its full potential.
On the occasion, Bhupinder Kumar expressed happiness over the fact that recently Pulwama has been declared as TB free district. He said that the entire Kashmir division is gradually moving towards Tuberculosis (TB) elimination. “TB incidences are declining in Kashmir. We will achieve TB elimination by 2025 intensified and active case finding and case screening is being done regularly,” he added.
He appreciated the untiring efforts of health employees in achieving these significant landmarks. He lauded the district administration led by Baseer-Ul-Haq Choudhary for his unparalleled support and guidance.
Secretary said that the department has done an extremely wonderful job in achieving brilliant results during the last few years in TB elimination. He praised the work of State Tuberculosis Officer, Chief Medical Officers Pulwama and Shopian, District Tuberculosis Officers, Block Medical Officers and most importantly the outstanding role of the ground staff.

He said that twin districts of Pulwama and Shopian, Anantnag and Kulgam were declared TB free recently, while twin districts of Srinagar and Ganderbal received gold Medals.
Hailing the achievements of Director Health Services, Secretary Health said that it has been made possible only by coordinated efforts of the department under the dedicated work of Doctors, paramedical staff and all the field workers.
On the occasion, he also felicitated doctors, health workers, field staff and paramedical staff of Pulwama/ Shopian for their commendable contributions in the health sector. He said that Pulwama and Anantnag districts in south Kashmir have been declared tuberculosis free in the second round of the sub-national certification for TB elimination of India recently. He added that three districts (Budgam, Pulwama and Anantnag) are the only districts that have been declared TB-free so far. “Srinagar has got a gold medal while UT J&K has got bronze and most of the other districts have maintained the status quo. Pulwama now has the distinction of being among the only three districts with TB free status,” he added.
Secretary lauded their tireless work during the Covid-19 pandemic and in TB elimination. He said that the fight against Covid and TB was almost impossible without the work of health workers while the support of allied departments was paramount. He also complimented anti-TB medical personnel, Pulwama for achieving the target in two years ahead of the National target.
On the occasion, Deputy Commissioner said that only with the strenuous efforts of Health society Pulwama and its associated officers/officials/ workers, health sector is witnessing reformation of the district’s health sector which is being acknowledged at national level as the District received back to back recognition for TB free and Kayakalp awards.
It has been a proud moment for the district administration and all of us that the district received Kayakalp “Award to Public Health Facilities” 2022-2023 besides one Community Health Centre Pampore, 05 PHCs, 01 NTPHC and 04 HWCs have qualified for awards under Kayakalp.
He added that following the National ambitious goal of achieving TB Free India by 2025, District Pulwama is privileged to hit the milestone two years ahead of the National target.
Director Health Services Kashmir, appreciated the work of the health care workers and credited the low mortality rate during the Covid-19 pandemic and the TB elimination in the District to them.
Later, Bhupinder Kumar felicitated the toppers of the recently declared results in class 8, besides felicitating the media fraternity of Pulwama for their commendable role in disseminating information regarding COVID-19 and TB in the district.(GNS)

Will Take Appropriate Steps If Need Arises: Chief Secretary On Covid-19

SRINAGAR: There is no need to panic about Covid-19 in J&K and if need arises, appropriate steps will be taken in time, Chief Secretary Arun Kumar Mehta said on Friday.
While talking to reporters on the side-lines of World Health Day event in Srinagar, Kumar said that there is no need to panic and appropriate steps will be taken as the administration has been very successful in managing the previous waves of Covid-19.
“People should have complete confidence that whenever need arises all possible steps will be taken. But at the moment there is no need to worry,” he said. “We by and large meet the Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS). We will analyze what are the gaps and very shortly we will complete all the gaps. At present by and large we are very comfortable,” the CS said.
Bhupinder Kumar Health and Medical Education Secretary, JK, while talking to reporters said that since past few weeks a rising trend of Covid-19 cases has been reported in J&K and around 230 cases are active. But just 12 are hospitalized across J&K,” he said.
“As per government guidelines, testing rate has been increased and all patients having symptoms of influenza and acute respiratory distress are being tested. Cases are on rise but hospitalization is not much,” he said.
He said it is an Omicron variant known as XBB.1.16 that is prevalent in society at present. “Most of the cases in the country are because of this variant,” he said, adding that the genome sequencing lab has been made operational at SKIMS Soura and genome sequencing is now being done here.
He said that there is no need to panic as the situation in last three years was handled well by theml. “We have a trained staff and hospitals are also very well equipped,” the Secretary Health and Medical Education said.
He said that mock drills in the hospitals are being conducted to ensure operational readiness for management of Covid with specific focus on oxygen plants, ventilators, logistics and human resources on April 10 and 11 and gaps are also being filled.

Kumar said that that all persons having symptoms must report as early detection helps in proper management and if it is reported late, then sometimes it leads to difficulties.
He said that situation is very much under control but people shouldn’t lower guard but follow covid appropriate behaviour. (KNO)

SIT to question TSPSC Secretary, member in paper leak case today

Hyderabad: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has summoned the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) Secretary and a member of the constitutional body to appear before it on Saturday, in connection with the question paper leak case.
According to a senior police official on Friday, notices have been issued to the TSPSC Secretary and the member asking them to appear before the SIT for examination as witnesses today.
Meanwhile, Telangana Congress president A Revanth Reddy made a representation to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), to probe into the money laundering angle in the leak of question papers of Group-I Preliminary examination and other exams conducted by TSPSC.
In a related development, YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) president Y S Sharmila was prevented by the police from “besieging” the TSPSC office here in protest against the “callousness and delay in conducting a fair investigation to protect the big fish involved” in the case, a party release said.
A total of 15 people, including some employees of TSPSC, have been arrested since March 13 over their alleged involvement in the data breach — for stealing and leaking question papers of TSPSC’s Assistant Engineer (Civil) examination, among other exams.
The TSPSC had on March 15 cancelled the Assistant Engineers (AE) exam held on March 5, following allegations that the question paper had been leaked.
Amid protests by opposition parties and students’ groups over the issue, the Commission had cancelled the Group-I preliminary exam and two other tests as well.
On Tuesday, the TSPSC rescheduled the written examination for the post of Horticulture Officer from April 4 to June 17.

Biden’s Education secretary is done sitting ‘idly’ amid schools fight

Cardona advocated for tighter gun laws after last year’s killings at Robb Elementary and has warned that the country risks failing students in Covid-19’s wake. Yet his newly public exasperation with school-centered partisanship comes as the Republican-controlled House approved sweeping “Parents Bill of Rights” legislation that captures broad strokes of pandemic-era conservative education wars.
“When we talk about politicization, when we talk about book banning, when we talk about Black history curriculum being picked apart — I think there are deliberate attempts to make sure that our public schools are not functional so that the private option sounds better,” the education secretary said. “I don’t doubt that’s intentional.”
Elections are also at play.
Nearly 30,000 school board seats are on the ballot this year across the country.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — a likely 2024 Republican presidential candidate who weighed in on school board races last year — has tapped conservative energy with a range of education issues. He signed one measure restricting how gender identities are discussed with schoolchildren, launched a feud over an Advanced Placement African American history course, and is primed to sign major private school voucher legislation.
Biden’s other potential challengers also frame their education concerns with a distinct culture war bent.
Conservatives say they’re the ones on the defensive. Many Republican governors and lawmakers argue their restrictions on classroom lessons, curriculum, and LGBTQ students are meant to blunt diversity initiatives run amok or what they see as the misapplication of legal protections to include transgender people.
Some Republican groups are also looking to combine a longstanding push for expansive school choice programs with renewed efforts to harness more power on local school boards.

“Many school board members are intertwined with biased political ideologies and are controlled by special interests groups like the teachers unions,” said Laura Zorc, the education reform director at the conservative FreedomWorks organization, after Florida lawmakers sent their school choice bill to DeSantis.
“The only way parents can ensure that their children receive a high quality education is if state educational dollars, traditionally earmarked for local school districts, are directed to parents who want the very best for their children,” Zorc said in a statement.
Cardona’s public frustration dovetails with a growing political counteroffensive from White House allies.
National Education Association President Becky Pringle and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten recently denounced DeSantis during an Orlando rally, and Weingarten is scheduled to deliver an address “in defense of public education” in Washington this week.
The Democratic Party of Illinois last week unveiled what it called an unprecedented effort to endorse dozens of candidates in nonpartisan local school and library board races. It also plans to funnel nearly $300,000 into an advertising and organizing campaign surrounding those elections.
Amid all this tension, Cardona has wielded recent op-eds in Newsweek and the Tampa Bay Times to accuse Republicans of “hiding behind the guise of ‘parents’ rights’” to defund public schools and trying to “hijack” classroom discussions.
And the secretary met last week with school superintendent and teacher representatives, who, he said, “feel the same way.”
“It just seems like it’s a constant attack on what I know as a dad, and what I know as an educator, is happening in our schools,” Cardona said in the interview. “Education being used to divide communities is the challenge that we face now as leaders.”
That challenge, he told state superintendents assembled in Washington last week, “is even harder than what we had in 2020” when Covid-19 first shuttered schools.
“Our students are as [emotionally] dysregulated as they ever have been in the last twenty years. The surgeon general reminded us that we’re in a youth mental health crisis, where one in three high school girls has considered suicide in the last three years,” Cardona told POLITICO. “I’m tired of folks looking to get political points by attacking vulnerable students, vulnerable communities and attacking our schools.”
He added: “If we’re not standing up for our students, who will? I feel it’s time.”

Post-Partition India a ‘Hindu Rashtra’, says BJP general secretary Vijayvargiya

Indore: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya on Tuesday said post-independence and Partition in 1947, whatever was left of India constituted a “Hindu Rashtra”.
Asked about the demand from a section of religious leaders to declare India a Hindu Rashtra, Vijayvargiya told reporters in Indore, “When India was divided, it was on this issue (on religious lines). After Partition, Pakistan was formed and the remaining country is a Hindu nation.”
The former state cabinet minister claimed a Muslim friend of his living in Bhopal recites the Hanuman Chalisa every day and also visits a Shiva temple.
“I asked my Muslim friend how he was inspired to worship Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva. My friend replied that when he read the history of his family, he came to know that his ancestors were Rajputs of Rajasthan and some of his relatives are still Rajputs who live in Rajasthan and also in Uttar Pradesh,” Vijayvargiya said without revealing the man’s identity.
The BJP leader said like his Muslim friend, there are many people in the country who feel their ancestors once recited the Hanuman Chalisa.
The veteran politician said he was considering forming a “Hanuman Chalisa Club” to wean youths away from drugs.
Asked about the recent activities of separatist forces in Punjab, Vijayvargiya said the Centre and the state government were working together to deal with the problem and their efforts will yield good results.

US Treasury Secretary Yellen rules out bailout for Silicon Valley Bank

Washington: US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Sunday said that the federal government will not provide a bailout for Silicon Valley Bank’s investors after the bank was abruptly shuttered, but said financial regulators are “concerned” about the impact to depositors and working to address their needs, media reports said.
“During the financial crisis, there were investors and owners of systemic large banks that were bailed out,” Yellen said in an interview, CBS News reported.
“And the reforms that have been put in place means that we’re not going to do that again. But we are concerned about depositors and are focused on trying to meet their needs.”
California regulators shut down the Silicon Valley Bank on Friday after depositors rushed to withdraw money last week amid concerns about its balance sheet. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) was appointed receiver, and regulators are working to find a buyer for the institution, which ranked as the 16th-largest bank in the US before its failure.
The collapse of the 40-year-old bank, which catered to the tech industry, is the largest of a financial institution since the failure of Washington Mutual in 2008.
President Joe Biden spoke to California Governor Gavin Newsom about Silicon Valley Bank and the federal response on Saturday, and the FDIC spoke to members of the California congressional delegation late Saturday night.
Yellen said that in the wake of Silicon Valley Bank’s failure, Treasury officials have been hearing from depositors, many of which are small businesses, and she has been working with bank regulators to “design appropriate policies” to address the situation, though she declined to provide further details.
The FDIC, she said, is likely considering a “range of available options” to stabilise the situation, which could include an acquisition by a foreign bank, CBS News reported.

“The American banking system is really safe and well-capitalised. It’s resilient,” she said. “In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, new controls were put in place, better capital and liquidity supervision, and it was tested during the early days of the pandemic and proved its resilience. So Americans can have confidence in the safety and soundness of our banking system.”
Still, Silicon Valley Bank’s shutdown has prompted nervousness about whether it could trigger a run on other small and regional banks. Yellen, though, said financial regulators are working to prevent the fallout from spreading to other institutions, CBS News reported.
“We want to make sure that the troubles that exist at one bank don’t create contagion to others that are sound,” she said. “The goal always of supervision and regulation is to make sure that contagion can’t occur.”
“We’re very aware of the problems that depositors will have,” Yellen said, CBS News reported. “Many of them are small businesses that employ people across the country, and of course this is a significant concern and [we’re] working with regulators to try to address these concerns.”

UK Foreign Secretary raises IT searches at BBC offices with Jaishankar

New Delhi: UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly on Wednesday raised the issue of tax searches at BBC offices in India with his Indian counterpart S. Jaishankar.
The issue was raised during their bilateral meeting, as per reports citing an interview with Cleverly, who is in India to participate in the two-day G20 Foreign Ministers meeting, which began here on Wednesday.
Last month, income tax authorities conducted “survey operations” at BBC offices in New Delhi and Mumbai.
The searches came after the Indian government had reacted strongly against a BBC documentary on post-Godhra incident riots in Gujarat in 2002, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the state’s Chief Minister.

US President announces pick for new labour secretary

Washington: US President Joe Biden announced that he’s nominating Julie Su to serve as his administration’s labour secretary.
Su currently serves as the deputy secretary of labour and would replace Marty Walsh, who’s stepping down to lead the National Hockey League Players’ Association, Xinhua news agency reported.
Previously, Su was California’s labour secretary and spent 17 years as a civil rights attorney, according to the White House.
A graduate of Stanford University and Harvard Law School, Su is the daughter of immigrants, speaking Mandarin and Spanish, the White House said.
