U.S. ends search for objects shot down over Alaska, Lake Huron

    [ad_1]

The announcement capped three dramatic weeks that saw U.S. fighter jets shoot down four airborne objects — a large Chinese balloon on Feb. 4 and three much smaller objects about a week later over Canada, Alaska and Lake Huron. They are the first known peacetime shootdowns of unauthorized objects in U.S. airspace.

U.S. officials said Friday that efforts to recover the remnants of the large balloon that was shot down off the coast of South Carolina had ended, and analysis of the debris so far reinforces conclusions that it was a Chinese spy balloon.

Officials said the U.S. believes that Navy, Coast Guard and FBI personnel collected all of the balloon debris off the ocean floor, which included key equipment from the payload that could reveal what information it was able to monitor and collect. White House national security spokesman John Kirby said a significant amount of debris was recovered and it included “electronics and optics” from the payload. He declined to say what, if anything, the U.S. has learned from the wreckage so far.

U.S. Northern Command said in a statement that the recovery operations ended Thursday and the final pieces are on their way to the FBI lab in Virginia for analysis. It said air and maritime restrictions off South Carolina have been lifted.

The military has concluded its efforts to recover debris from what the U.S. government says was a Chinese government surveillance balloon that was downed off the coast of South Carolina.

U.S. Northern Command officials said Friday that it wrapped up recovery efforts Thursday and is sending the final pieces of debris to an FBI lab in Virginia for analysis.

The balloon, which was shot down Feb. 4, was the first of four objects downed after flying in U.S. airspace in recent weeks. Three smaller objects, which have not been similarly identified by the U.S. government as surveillance equipment, were subsequently shot down over Canada, Alaska and Lake Huron.

Narmadapuram: A church was torched and defiled by unidentified persons in Madhya Pradesh’s Narmadapuram district, police said on Monday.

The incident came to light on Sunday when some people went to the church, located in the Chaukipura area which has a considerable tribal population, to offer prayers.

A case has been registered against unidentified persons and efforts are on to trace the culprits, Itarsi sub-divisional officer of police (SDOP) Mahendra Singh Chauhan told PTI over the phone.

According to an initial investigation, the vandals entered the place of worship, built around five years ago and located 40 km from the district headquarters, by removing a window net and burning it from inside, the official said.

Some religious texts and other items including furniture were also destroyed in the fire, the official said quoting a complaint filed in connection with the incident.

When some people went to the church on Sunday to offer prayers, they found it burnt and its inside wall having the word “Ram” inscribed on it, local devotee Denis Jonathan claimed while talking to PTI.

The church, located in Sukhtawa village of Kesala block, was connected to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, he said.

SDOP Chauhan said teams have been formed to identify and nab the vandals and a case has been registered under Indian Penal Code Section 295 (Injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class). To a query, the police official denied any tension in Chaukipura area following the incident.

  • US Justice Department conducts ‘planned search’ of Biden’s home

US Justice Department conducts ‘planned search’ of Biden’s home

    [ad_1]

Washington: The US Department of Justice (DOJ) conducted a “planned search” of President Joe Biden’s home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, on Wednesday.

“Today, with the President’s full support and cooperation, the DOJ is conducting a planned search of his home in Rehoboth, Delaware,” Biden’s personal lawyer, Bob Bauer, said in a statement obtained by US media outlets.

“Under DOJ’s standard procedures, in the interests of operational security and integrity, it sought to do this work without advance public notice, and we agreed to cooperate,” Bauer wrote.

“The search today is a further step in a thorough and timely DOJ process we will continue to fully support and facilitate,” the attorney said.

“We will have further information at the conclusion of today’s search.”

The DOJ conducted a search of Biden’s home in Wilmington, Delaware, on January 20 after documents with classified markings were also found at the Biden Penn Centre in Washington, D.C., in November 2022, Xinhua news agency reported.

DOJ special counsels are separately investigating the handling of classified documents by Biden and former US President Donald Trump.

Former US Vice President Mike Pence told Congress last week that classified documents had been found at his home in Indiana.

The US National Archives and Records Administration has recently requested that former Presidents and Vice-Presidents “conduct an assessment” to determine whether they have any classified materials in their possession.

Under the Presidential Records Act, all US Presidents’ and Vice-Presidents’ records, including any classified documents, must be turned over to archives by the ends of their terms.

  • Google Search now allows US car dealerships to show vehicle inventory

Google Search now allows US car dealerships to show vehicle inventory

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Google is reportedly rolling out a new feature that will allow car dealerships to add their vehicle inventory directly to search listings via Google My Business in the US.

Although the feature is still in beta, it appears to be available to “any” US-based vehicle dealer, including those that sell motorcycles, recreational vehicles (RVs), or anything else with a vehicle identification number (VIN), reports 9To5Google.

Moreover, this feature will allow customers to browse a dealer’s inventory without leaving Google Search.

Dealership listings will showcase the vehicles that are available, including used cars, along with details about their prices, features, mileage, and more.

These listings also include links to the dealer’s website for more details.

With this feature more widely available to dealers, customers in the US are more likely to see the new “Cars for Sale” pages in their searches on Google, the report said.

Last month, it was reported that the tech giant had redesigned the Knowledge Panel to get a large desktop grip as it will make it “easier to explore a topic by highlighting the most relevant and useful information” when searching.

Knowledge Panels are information boxes that appear on Google when users search for entities (people, places, organizations, things) that are in the Knowledge Graph.
