Scuffle breaks out between protesting wrestlers, cops at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar

New Delhi: A scuffle allegedly broke out between the wrestlers staging a protest at Jantar Mantar here and some police personnel, leading to head injuries to a couple of protesters.

Three people, including Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti, were detained following the incident, police said.

In a video being circulated on social media platforms, some of the protesters can be heard accusing a police personnel of attacking two wrestlers under the influence of alcohol.

The accused policeman is seen sitting in the video, while the protesters allege that his colleagues were mute spectators.

Deputy Commissioner Police (New Delhi) Pranav Tayal said Bharti came to the protest site with folding beds without permission. On being asked about the beds, his supporters became aggressive and tried to get the beds from a truck. Subsequently, a minor altercation took place following which Bharti, along with two others, was detained, the officer added.

Another senior police officer said, “There were a few men who tried bringing cots to the protest site. When the policemen deployed at the spot asked them about the cots, they got aggressive and the protesters joined them. They wrongfully restrained a policeman and accused him of being drunk, which was not the case. Police personnel are at the site and the situation is now under control. No protester was beaten up.”

Former wrestler Rajveer told PTI, “The mattresses got wet due to rain, so we were bringing folding beds for sleeping, but the police did not allow that. Drunk policeman Dharemendra abused Vinesh Phogat and got involved in a scuffle with us.”

“They started hitting us. Bajrang Punia’s brother-in-law Dushyant and Rahul suffered head injuries. The police did not even let doctors reach the site. Even the women constables were misbehaving with us,” he said.

“I was abused and pushed around by policemen. Where are the women police personnel?” asked Phogat.

Punia’s wife Sangeeta also claimed that she was pushed around by policemen.

Punia has called for farmers and their leaders to assemble at the protest site on Thursday morning.

“Delhi Police ki gundagardi ab nahi chalegi (Delhi Police’s high-handedness will not work anymore). We will call farmers to assemble here in numbers. We will not tolerate it anymore. Tractors or trolleys. whatever you get, just come here,” he said.

The wrestlers have been staging a sit-in at Jantar Mantar since April 23. They have levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is also a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Uttar Pradesh.

The protesters have been demanding criminal action against Singh for the alleged sexual harassment and intimidation of seven female wrestlers, one of whom is a minor.

The Delhi Police filed two FIRs against the WFI president on Friday on the allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him by the wrestlers.

New Delhi: One person was killed while four others were injured in Delhi’s Zakir Nagar area following a scuffle between two groups of teenagers.

The incident occurred after an argument erupted between the two groups over the girlfriend of one of the youths involved, an official said on Saturday.

According to the police, a PCR call was received at the Jamia Nagar police station on Friday informing about a brawl in the Zakir Nagar area.

“On reaching the spot, the police found that a scuffle had broken out between two groups of boys. Several boys had sustained stab injuries who were rushed to the Holi Family Hospital for treatment,” said a senior police officer.

The police then reached the hospital and obtained the MLCs of the injured boys, including Mohd. Sheyan, who was declared brought dead by the doctors.

“Four other boys, all residents of Zakir Nagar, were later shifted to AIIMS for further medical attention. During investigation, it was revealed that the quarrel had started over the girlfriend of one of the boys — Amir (name changed). Amir suspected that his girlfriend was speaking to another boy which led him to threaten the latter with dire consequences,” said the officer.

On the fateful day, both parties had called a meeting at around 9 p.m. in Gali No. 6 to sort out the issue.

“Amir arrived with over 12 of his friends. A few minutes into the meeting, one of the boys allegedly stabbed Sheyan and four other boys with a knife, after which all the accused persons fled from the spot,” the officer said.

“Based on the statement of one of the injured boys, a case has been registered at the Jamia Nagar police station. The CCTV footages from the area are being scanned,” the officer said.

  • Imran Khan urges party to persist in struggle amid scuffle between police and supporters.

Imran Khan urges party to persist in struggle amid scuffle between police and supporters.

    [ad_1]

Lahore: Pakistan’s ousted prime minister Imran Khan Tuesday asked his supporters to stand up for their rights and continue the struggle even if he is killed or arrested, hours after clashes erupted between the police and his party workers who gathered outside his residence here to foil his arrest in the Toshakhana case.

Khan’s video message was released by his party on social media as police arrived at his Zaman Park residence to arrest him.

Police fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse Khan’s supporters, who reportedly hurled stones at policemen, resulting in injuries.

In the video message, Khan urged his supporters to come out for real freedom as police arrived to arrest him. “They think that after my arrest, the nation will fall asleep. You have to prove them wrong,” 70-year-old Khan said in the video.

“God has given me everything, and I am fighting this battle for you. I have been fighting this battle all my life, and I will continue to do so,” he said.

“If something happens to me and I am sent to jail or if I am killed, you have to prove that you will struggle without Imran Khan and not accept the slavery of these thieves and of the one person who has been making decisions for the country,” he said.

A senior police officer of Islamabad police said that his team has come here to arrest the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman in the Toshakhana case.

Khan has been in the crosshairs for buying gifts, including an expensive Graff wristwatch he had received as the premier at a discounted price from the state depository called Toshakhana and selling them for profit.

TV footage showed police slowly approaching the Zaman Park residence of Khan behind an armoured vehicle that was dispersing his supporters with a water cannon.

Khan’s supporters, who had covered their faces with pieces of cloth, pelted stones at policemen.

According to reports, Islamabad Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Shahzad Bukhari, who was leading the police team, was injured. He was seen walking with the help of two officials. Both Khan’s supporters and policemen were injured in the clashes.

PTI leader Shireen Mazari shared a video in which tear gas could be seen entering Khan’s residence.

“They’re shelling Imran Khan’s house too, a leader who requested everyone to stay peaceful and patient. Democracy seems to be suspended in the country, no?” the official Twitter handle of the party tweeted.

Meanwhile, the party’s deputy leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that the PTI leadership is ready to find out a “possible way out” to avert bloodshed.

“Show me the warrant. I will first read and understand it. Then, I will speak to Imran Khan and my lawyers,” he told the police.

Khan’s party moved the Islamabad High Court against the arrest warrants issued in the Toshakhana case.

Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Aamer Farooq fixed the hearing for Wednesday while rejecting the party’s request to conduct the hearing today.

The plea has been fixed for hearing tomorrow (March 15) despite the objections raised by the registrar’s office, Khan’s lawyer Ali Bukhari said.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, however, said that officials would arrest Khan in accordance with the court’s directives and produce him in court.

The official Twitter handle of the party earlier urged supporters and workers to gather outside the residence and ‘remain peaceful’.

A large number of PTI workers equipped with clubs and sticks were present outside Khan’s residence to resist the police action.

The police blocked all roads leading to the house of the PTI chairman by placing containers and riot personnel took positions to launch the operation.

Senior PTI leader Farukh Habib told reporters that come what may Imran Khan would not surrender to police in fake cases. “The arrest warrants in the case related to threatening a female judge were today suspended by the Islamabad High Court. Let’s see what new warrants police have brought with them now,” Habib said.

One activist of Khan’s party was killed on Wednesday during a crackdown on his supporters who gathered outside his residence in Lahore, defying a government ban on rallies in the city.

On Monday, the Lahore police had booked Khan in a case related to the killing of the PTI worker – Ali Bilal alias Zille Shah – in a road accident.

Earlier, the Lahore police had registered an FIR against Khan and 400 others for the murder of Shah. “The new FIR has been registered against Imran Khan, Fawad Chaudhry, Dr Yasmin Rashid and a number of other PTI men for abetment to murder, concealing facts and evidence related to the death of Zille Shah,” a senior police officer told PTI.

He said the police may arrest Khan and others nominated in the FIR after direction from the “top”. The PTI had accused the police of murder of Shah after inflicting brutal torture on March 8.

This is the 81th FIR against Khan since the PML-N led federal coalition came into power 11 months ago after toppling his government through a no-confidence motion.

Khan Monday led a march of thousands of his supporters, a day after he called off his party’s election rally following a ban on public gatherings in Punjab’s provincial capital. The former cricketer-turned-politician’s supporters threw rose petals at a convoy carrying him to Data Darbar shrine.

Khan was ousted from power in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote, which he alleged was part of a US-led conspiracy targeting him because of his independent foreign policy decisions on Russia, China and Afghanistan.

Since his ouster, Khan has been clamouring for immediate elections to oust what he termed was an “imported government” led by prime minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Sharif has maintained that elections will be held later this year once the parliament completes its five-year tenure.

    [ad_1]

Mumbai : Mumbai police have registered a case against a man for voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint and other charges in connection to a scuffle incident reported during singer Sonu Nigam’s live concert in Chembur area on Monday night.

A case has been registered under IPC sections 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) on the basis of singer Sonu Nigam’s complaint, the police said.

DCP Hemrajsingh Rajput told reporters, “After live concert, Sonu Nigam was coming down from stage when a man held him. After objection he pushed Sonu Nigam and two other men with him from the steps, one of those two men sustained injuries. Accused’s name is Swapnil Phaterpekar.”

“The injured has been identified as Rabbani,” he added.

According to officials, the incident took place in a concert in Chembur area of Mumbai when Sonu Nigam was coming down from the stage.

Following the incident, Singer Sonu Nigam reached Chembur police station and lodged a complaint, prompting police to file a case. There has been no arrest made by the police so far.

Sources said that the accused is the son of a local MLA. “He (accused) allegedly reached out to the singer for a selfie when the scuffle broke out between him and Sonu Nigam’s security,” they said.

Recalling the incident, Singer Sonu Nigam told the reporters, “After the concert, I was coming down from stage when a man held me. Then he pushed Hari & Rabbani who came to save me. Then I fell on steps.”

“Rabbani (the injured one, who accompanied Sonu) could have died today if there were some iron rods lying down. He was pushed in such a way… you could see in the video…Even I was about to fall,” he said.

Sonu made it clear in his statement that he lodged the complaint to raise awareness among common people. “I filed a complaint so that people should think about the consequences when they try to get a selfie or pictures forcefully, there was a commotion, dhakka mukki, arrogance….,” he said.

Commenting on reports about “Sonu being attacked by some men”, DCP Rajput said, “I have talked to Sonuji. Till now, we haven’t found any such evidence. The accused wanted to take a selfie or he may have tried to garner some media attention…We would investigate further to ascertain the cause.”

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi told ANI that local MLA’s son tried to reach out to Sonu Nigam after his performance for a selfie, but Sonu Nigam’s body guard stopped him not knowing his identity.

“Later there was a minor scuffle between Bodyguard and MLA’s son due to which one or two people fell from stage. Meanwhile, MLA’s daughter who is an ex-BMC corporater intervened and they were stopped. Injured were taken to hospital. So it’s not an assault,” Chaturvedi told ANI over the phone.MLA
