‘The Kerala Story’ gets poor reception; theatres in TN stop screening film

Chennai: Amid stinging reviews, allegedly poor box office collections as well as protests, theatres in Tamil Nadu stopped the screening of “The Kerala Story” in the State from May 7 onwards.
When this writer tried to book via online platforms for a Sunday afternoon show, it was not possible anymore.
President of Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association, M Subramaniam, popularly known as Tiruppur Subramaniam, confirmed the news that the few multiplexes that had shown the film had decided to withdraw it.

“The film was only shown in a few multiplexes owned by pan-India groups, mostly PVR. Locally-owned multiplexes had already decided not to show the film, as it did not have any popular stars. In Coimbatore for instance, there were two shows so far — one on Friday and one on Saturday. Even those did not do well. Given that, theatres decided that it was not worth going through the threat of protests and such,” added Subramaniam.
On April 6, Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) staged a protest against the release of the film in Chennai. Seeman, the party’s coordinator, who is also actor and director, along with NTK cadres, had protested near Anna Nagar Arch.
Film industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai, who said he was planning to watch the film on Sunday, only to find out it was no longer shown, had also tweeted that the film multiplexes will stop screening “The Kerala Story”.
“The multiplex owners have cited potential law and order issues and lack of interest as reasons for the move,” said Pillai.
Meanwhile in Kerala, according to the distributors, E4 Entertainment, 22 screens across the State are screening the films. Although the theatre owners in Kerala had told Press Trust of India before the release of the film that they were not worried about the adverse publicity, on the day of release, on May 5, a few theatres, including PVR Cinemas at Lulu Mall and Oberon Mall in Kochi, decided not to screen the film.

When contacted, a spokesperson for PVR Cinemas had declined to comment.

UP BJP leader organises free screening of ‘The Kerala Story’ for college girls

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh BJP secretary Abhijat Mishra on Saturday organised the screening of the controversial film “The Kerala Story” for around 80 college girls in the city, a move criticised by opposition parties in the state.
The BJP leader booked an entire theatre for the screening and said the movie should be shown to young girls “to prevent them from love jihad”.
The film, starring Adah Sharma, revolves around a group of women in Kerala who are forced to convert and join the ISIS.

Mishra said the movie is based on true events and shows how gullible girls are manipulated and then converted.
“The message which I want to convey to these girls, through this movie, is that they need to be aware and should not fall in any kind of traps, and focus on their studies,” he said.
“Must watch ‘The Kerala Story’ to save lives of young girls. Parties supporting terrorists and love jihad and opposing The Kerala Story should be banned,” he tweeted in Hindi.
The Opposition, however, said the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was using the platform of film-making to propagate its political ideas rather than educate the masses.
Ankita Awasthi, a student who watched the movie, said one should be aware and not fall prey to clandestine designs.

Pratima Ghosh, a teacher who accompanied the college-going girls to the screening, said after watching the movie, one expects that the girls will stay away from “bad people”.
Taking umbrage at the screening of the movie, Samajwadi party spokesperson Ameeque Jamei said the BJP should change its name to “Bhartiya Nazi Party” and the Information and Broadcasting ministry to “propaganda ministry”.
He also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is talking about a propaganda movie as he has nothing else to talk about.
“… this shows that the BJP is losing big time in (poll-bound) Karnataka,” Jamei said.
The hotly debated film on conversion is at the centre of national discourse with Modi crediting it for bringing out terror conspiracies and using it to attack the Congress during a rally in Karnataka on Friday.
In a rally in Ballari in poll-bound Karnataka, the prime minister had said, “Such a beautiful state of the country, where people are hardworking and talented. The Kerala Story’ film brings out terror conspiracies happening in that state.”
“It is unfortunate that Congress can be seen standing with this terror trend that is seeking to ruin the country. Congress is even indulging in backdoor political bargaining with people having terror inclinations. People of Karnataka should be cautious about Congress,” he added.
Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi said films are meant to educate people but the saffron party politicises every issue for its political benefits. “They are making such movies to propagate their political needs,” he said.
“These kinds of movies do not benefit anyone or the country. They do not solve the problem of unemployment or inflation. The BJP always uses these kinds of movies to distract people from real issues,” Awasthi added.

Hyderabad: Vision screening camp for UoH Campus School students

Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad Campus School recently organized a vision (eye) screening camp in association with the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences, School of Medical Sciences, University of Hyderabad (UoH).
The two-day camp was organised under the guidance of Prof. S V S Nageswara Rao, Chairman, of the Campus School Management Committee, P Murali, Principal i/C and Teachers of the Campus School. First-year Masters Students of Optometry and Vision Sciences volunteered and organized the free eye check-up camp for 404 students of the University of Hyderabad Campus School.
Dr. Konda Nagaraju, Bindu Reddy and Meghana Mashagalla along with a team of 15 optometry masters students screened the students and provided referrals as required. Six stations were set up for comprehensive eye screening which include registration, history taking, visual acuity for distance and near, objective and subjective refraction, binocular vision screening (colour vision, HBT, cover tests), torch light examination and management, a press note informed.

The camp was useful as it could identify some students with eye-related issues that needed correction. The early diagnosis helped in proper treatment to avoid further issues.

Modi BBC docu: HC sets aside DU order debarring NSUI leader over screening

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday set aside a Delhi University (DU) order debarring a Congress leader for a year for his alleged involvement in the on-campus screening of a banned BBC documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots, saying the action was taken in violation of the principle of natural justice.
The documentary-‘India: The Modi Question’- was seen as critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who was the Gujarat chief minister when the communal conflagration engulfed large parts of the state.
Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav said the DU’s administrative authority did not offer Lokesh Chugh, a PhD scholar and national secretary of the Congress’ students wing NSUI, an opportunity to be heard.

“The court is unable to sustain the impugned order dated March 10, 2023. Impugned order is set aside. The admission of the petitioner is restored. Necessary consequences will follow,” the judge said in the order.
“From a perusal of the facts of the present case, the court finds that the impugned order has been passed without offering opportunity of hearing to the petitioner or considering his explanation,” stated the judge while dealing with Chugh’s petition against the debarment order.
Attorney General (AG) R Venkataramani represented the university and opposed the petition.
The court clarified since the debarment order was being set aside for non-adherence to the principle of natural justice, the university is free to taken action against the petitioner in accordance with the procedure.
The AG claimed Chugh has approached the court with “unclean hands” and has made a “completely false” statement that he was not present at the time of the screening.

He said a committee was constituted to look into the incident and the petitioner, who was served a show-cause notice, was given a opportunity to explain his conduct.
The court observed the committee’s report records its findings but “does not deal with the explanation, if any, given by the petitioner” and the minutes of the meeting clearly indicate the petitioner’s presence but the “clarification given by him has not been mentioned or dealt with”.
It said there is no consideration of the submissions by the petitioner in the debarment order and he was also not specifically asked to explain the allegations.
“The perusal of impugned order indicates certain events that have taken place and as to whether petitioner was present at the time of screening of banned BBC documentary or not, it is not reflected,” the court said.
“The petitioner has not been specifically called upon to explain the allegations which form part of the impugned order. The reasons are necessary to be assigned by the administrative authority,” stated the court.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal appeared for the petitioner. He argued that the debarment order cannot be sustained for non-compliance of the principle of natural justice and DU cannot “supplement” reasons behind it at this stage.
Lawyers Naman Joshi and Abhik Chimni also appeared for the petitioner.
Chugh had earlier urged the court to permit him to submit his Ph.D thesis before the retirement of his supervisor on April 30.
The AG asserted it was “untenable” to say that the DU acted in an arbitrary manner and a notice was already in existence which mandated prior intimation to the proctor if a protest was to be staged.
The attorney general contended the petitioner had the knowledge that the BBC documentary had been banned and the transcript (of video footage) showed him saying the ban must be “disobeyed.”
The petitioner had approached the high court earlier this month challenging the university’s decision to debar him for a year for his alleged involvement in the screening of the documentary — ‘India: The Modi Question’ — related to the 2002 Gujarat riots. The documentary was screened earlier this year.
The Centre had issued directions for blocking multiple YouTube videos and Twitter posts sharing links to the BBC documentary, which was described by the Ministry of External Affairs as a “propaganda piece” that lacks objectivity and reflects a colonial mindset.
The DU registrar had issued Chugh a memorandum in March under which he was not allowed to take part in “any university or college or departmental examination for one year”.
The DU defended its action before the high court and said the petitioner indulged in gross indiscipline which tarnished the image of a premier educational institution.
The university, in its reply filed to the petition, said it acted on the basis of a newspaper report on the ban on the BBC documentary.
It said several people, including the petitioner, assembled on the campus to screen the documentary in violation of Section 144 (issuance of prohibitory orders) of Code of Criminal Procedure imposed by police authorities.
“Petitioner had participated in the ‘showing’ of the banned BBC Documentary on 27.01.2023 at 4:00 PM in front of Gate No. 4, Faculty of Arts, University of Delhi which amounts to an act of indiscipline,” the reply filed by the Delhi University before the high court said.
The petitioner contended in his plea that he was not involved in the screening and, to his knowledge, there was no prohibition on the screening of the documentary.
The DU, however, said instead of concentrating on his research, the petitioner was “instrumental in inciting other students and indulging in petty politics”, which was detrimental to discipline and was causing disruption in academic functioning.
The reply said, after watching the videos, a committee constituted to probe the incident found that the “mastermind of the agitation was the petitioner” and he was seen actively being part of the unlawful assembly.

Screening banned BBC documentary amounted to ‘gross indiscipline’, DU tells Delhi HC

New Delhi: The Delhi University (DU) told the High Court on Monday that the action of students screening the banned BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi without permission, and organising protests, despite imposition of prohibitory orders, amounts to “gross indiscipline”.
A bench of Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav was hearing a plea by the national Secretary of Congress’ student wing, NSUI, Lokesh Chugh challenging his debarment from the university on allegations that he organised a screening of the BBC documentary.
“We acted against the students who organised the screening of the documentary based on the newspaper reports which said that the two-part series has been banned in India,” the university submitted.

“Chugh was the mastermind behind the agitation and that video footage shows that he was actively involved in the screening of the documentary in the University campus,” the DU counsel added.
The intention to disrupt the academic functioning of the University has tarnished the image of the University, it was contended.
The DU apprised the court that Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure was imposed by the police on that date despite which students protested.
“The Committee after watching the videos found that the mastermind of the agitation was the petitioner. It was observed by the committee that around 20 students had gathered at 4 p.m. to showcase the BBC documentary and around 50 more students were there to watch the said documentary.”
It was noted by the court that DU’s response and Chugh’s counter are not on record and accordingly listed the case for next hearing on April 26 while asking both counsel to file their written submissions by Tuesday.

The DU has prohibited Chugh, of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and a Ph.D. research scholar at the Department of Anthropology, from taking any university, college, or departmental exams.
During the last hearing, Justice Kaurav had remarked that the university’s order did not reflect application of mind.
“There has to be an independent application of mind which is not reflected in the order… The order must reflect the reasoning,” the court said.
Appearing on behalf of the DU, lawyer Mohinder Rupal had said that the university’s decision was based on some documents that he wishes to provide, while Chugh’s counsel had claimed that there is considerable urgency in the situation because the deadline for turning in his PhD thesis is April 30.
Justice Kaurav had responded that once the petitioner is before the court, his rights would be protected.
“Mr Mohinder Rupal seeks time to file counter affidavit. Let the same be done in three working days. Petitioner is also at liberty to file the rejoinder in two days thereafter. List on Monday,” the court had ordered.
The case pertains to a protest that was planned for January 27, 2023, on the DU campus during which, the BBC documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’ was also shown to the general audience.
Chugh claims in his plea that he was not even there during the protest since he was attending a media interaction.
“Pertinently, the petitioner was giving a live interview at the time when the documentary was being screened inside the Faculty of Arts (Main Campus). Thereafter, police detained a few students for screening the allegedly banned BBC documentary and subsequently charged them for disturbance of peace in the area. Notably, the petitioner was neither detained nor charged with any form of incitement or violence or disturbance of peace by the police,” he stated.
However, the DU served him with a show-cause notice on February 16 alleging that he had disrupted law and order at the university during the screening. On March 10, a memorandum debarring him was then issued.
In his plea, Chugh claims that the university’s order against him went against the principles of natural justice and that the disciplinary authorities failed to even inform him of the allegations and charges against him. Therefore, Chugh demanded that the memorandum and notice that claim he was complicit in a breach of law and order be set aside. He has asked for a stay of the memorandum in the interim.

Telangana: 19K women undergo health screening under Arogya Mahila

Hyderabad: The Arogya Mahila initiative, which was launched to provide free comprehensive healthcare services solely for women of all ages in government hospitals every Tuesday, has so far served 19,000 women from throughout Telangana.
At over 100 government healthcare centres on Tuesday, a total of 7,965 women were screened for 57 different types of healthcare services in 8 super-specialities. On March 14, the first Tuesday, 4,793 women were screened, while 6328 women received healthcare services at government hospitals on the second Tuesday, i.e, on March 21
Among the 7965 women who received outpatient screening yesterday, 5425 were screened for breast cancer, 5423 for oral cancer, 1463 for cervical cancer, 654 for urinary tract infections (UTI), 1735 for micronutrient deficiencies, 1682 for thyroid testing, 1128 for Vitamin-D, and 2982 for CPB tests. In all, 4727 diagnostic tests were performed.

BBC docu screening attempt: DU bars 2 students for a year

New Delhi: Delhi University has barred two students, including a Congress students’ wing leader, for a year for allegedly participating in a screening of the BBC documentary on the Godhra riots on campus, a senior official said.
During this period, the students will not be allowed to take any university or college or departmental examination, according to the memorandum dated March 10.
Six other students allegedly involved in the January 27 incident have been given “less strict” punishment, the official said, while indicating that more students might be implicated.
“We have debarred two students and six students have been given less strict punishment. We have also called the parents of several students. More action is expected in the coming days,” the official told PTI.
She did not specify what punishment was meted out to the other six students.
The students barred have been identified as Lokesh Chugh — a PhD scholar in the Anthropology department — and Ravinder of the Law faculty.
The “confidential” memorandum issued to them mentioned that the documentary — “India: The Modi Question” is “banned”. Chugh, the national secretary of the Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), said he was not present at the Arts faculty on the day of the incident and added that the documentary is not banned.
“…the act of participation in the showing of the banned BBC documentary is an act of indiscipline on the part of Lokesh Chugh,” the memorandum, a copy of which has been accessed by PTI, stated.

“On the basis of the recommendations of the committee, the disciplinary authority taking cognisance of the above indiscipline exhibited by Shri Lokesh Chugh, decided to impose the penalty of debarring him from taking any university or college or departmental examination or examinations for one year,” the memorandum read.
A similar memorandum has been issued to Ravinder, the official said.
The university had formed a seven-member committee to investigate the ruckus outside the Arts faculty building over screening of the BBC documentary.
A commotion erupted at the university as students attempted to screen the documentary even as police and the varsity administration intervened.
The police had detained 24 NSUI-affiliated students during its efforts to scuttle the screening.
Chugh, however, said he was not among the 24 students.
“During the screening, I was not on campus. I was participating in a TV debate Moreover, the documentary is not banned but blocked,” he said.

Srinagar, Mar 13 (GNS): In sync with the ongoing Glaucoma Week, a screening camp for non-communicable diseases was on Monday held at Government Gousia Hospital Khanyar, during which 29 patients were diagnosed with diabetes.
To overlook the ongoing celebrations, Director Health Services Kashmir Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad Rather visited Government Gousia Hospital Khanyar Srinagar – where he assessed a screening camp conducted for non-communicable diseases.
Talking to media on the sidelines of the event, Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad Rather, as per GNS said, that in a significant move towards the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the Government of India’s HNCD program has initiated screening in all district hospitals for people of all age groups. “The screenings aim to identify individuals who may be at risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.”
Citing reports, Rather said that out of the 550 patients screened at Gousia Hospital, 29 were diagnosed with high blood sugar levels, indicating that they are at a good percentage of fighting the disease. “This is in line with the national average, which reports that 12-13% of the population is diabetic,” he said.
“It is crucial for people to change their lifestyle as no other option is left now. They need to exercise, work on their fitness, and reduce the consumption of salt, sugar, and other harmful elements,” said the Director of Health, emphasizing the need for people to take preventive measures seriously.
“The rise of chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes is becoming a concern across India, prompting the government to initiate the NCB program. The aim is to educate people on how to remain healthy and enjoy a better quality of life.”

Talking about the outbreak of seasonal influenza on the rise, the Director urged people to take all the necessary precautions and use masks to protect themselves from the virus.”
He advised those experiencing influenza symptoms to drink hot water and consult a doctor immediately.
“We have taken preventive measures, and if anybody among us feels symptomatic, they should consult a doctor. Otherwise, there is no need to worry, taking proper prevention can cure anyone,” he reassured.
“This initiative by the HNCD program is a step in the right direction towards creating awareness and promoting preventive measures for NCDs. With such screenings becoming more common, early detection and management of these diseases could save lives and improve the health of the nation,” he added. (GNS)

Cuttack varsity prohibits screening of ‘Gay India Matrimony’, ‘Had Anhad’

Bhubaneswar: A day after cancelling a scheduled film festival at Ravenshaw University in Cuttack without citing any reason, authorities of the institute on Friday allowed students to organise the same with a rider.
The organisers were told to remove two films ‘Had Anhad’ and ‘Gay India Matrimony’ from the line up that was prepared for the festival, according to a varsity official.
Vice-chancellor Sanjay K Nayak was not available for his comment on the whole issue, but the university’s public relations officer, Dharmabrata Mohanty, said, “Some students were against the screening of the two films. We did not want any trouble, and they were taken off the list.”
A member of the varsity’s film society said that the festival, scheduled to start at 10.30 am on Friday, was scrapped by the authorities just a day before, reportedly due to an anonymous threat call.
The decision led to a massive protest outside the vice chancellor’s office, prompting the authorities to reconsider the decision, but with certain conditions, he said.
The three-day event, the first of its kind in the university, is largely focused on filmmaker Satyajit Ray, with an exhibition put up in his memory, apart from other sessions involving other directors.
Ray’s masterpieces Pather Panchali’ and Charulata’ are among the 15 films that were chosen for screening at the film festival.
Talking to PTI, Ravenshaw Film Society secretary Subha Sudarshan Nayak said that Pather Panchali’ was among the films that had figured in the controversy on Thursday, as some students had objected to its screening.

“A section of students did not want ‘Pather Panchali’ to be screened initially, claiming that the film romanticised poverty. The film was, however, shown today,” Nayak told PTI.
The varsity later picked two other films from the list and cancelled their screenings, he said.
Debalina Majumder, the director of ‘Gay India Matrimony’, termed the university’s decision “annoying and outrageous”.
“I do not see any reason behind the last-minute decision to pull out our film from the list. ‘Gay India Matrimony’ has received required permission from the Central Board of Film Certification. We are mulling the option of approaching the governor of Odisha, who is also the vice-chancellor of Ravenshaw University,” Majumdar told PTI over phone.
A group of students, reportedly affiliated to a rightwing outfit, however, came out in support of the university authorities.
“We are opposed to screening of the film ‘Had Anhad’ and ‘Gay India Matrimony’ as they are against Indian culture,” one of the students said.
Sources at the Ravenshaw University stated that the authorities stopped the screening of the two films fearing a possible unrest on the campus.
