‘The Kerala Story’: 2 Kochi theatres cancel shows; only one to screen film

    [ad_1]

Kochi: Two theatres in Kochi city have cancelled the screening of the controversial film ‘The Kerala Story’ which will be released in cinema halls today.

Although PVR Cinemas in Lulu Mall and Oberon Mall, and Cinepolis in Centre Square Mall have cancelled the screening, no reasons were stated for the decision.

There is only one theatre ‘Shenoys’ remaining in Kochi city which is set to screen the movie from 10.00 am.

    MS Education Academy

Earlier, theatres reached an agreement with distributors to screen the film on 50 screens in Kerala, but many backed out just before the release.

Later, the film agreed to screen on only 17 screens. However, as of now, it is not clear how many theatres will be screening the film.

In the meantime, there are only three theatres which are going to screen this movie in Ernakulam district. Shenoys in Kochi city, Carnival Cinemas in Kariyad and Dharshana Cinema Complex in Piravom will be screening ‘The Kerala Story’.

The show’s cancellation comes amid protests against the movie for allegedly propagating a false narrative of Islamic conversion.
Helmed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film has triggered a massive political row with various leaders reacting to the movie releasing today.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, recently said in a statement that the movie was deliberately made with the aim of communal polarisation and to spread hate propaganda against Kerala.

The statement reads, “The trailer of the Hindi film, ‘The Kerala Story’, which appears to have been deliberately made with the aim of communal polarisation and to spread hate propaganda against Kerala was released last day. It is indicated from the trailer that this film is trying to spread the propaganda of Sangh Parivar, which has established itself as the centre of religious extremism in the land of secularism, Kerala.”

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Sunday tweeted, “It may be your kerala-story”>Kerala story. It is not our kerala-story”>Kerala story.”

‘The Kerala Story’ stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani in the lead roles.

The trailer of Sen’s film ‘The Kerala Story’ came under fire as it claimed that 32,000 girls from the state went missing and later joined the terrorist group, ISIS.

Leader of Opposition in Kerala Legislative Assembly VD Satheesan recently said that the film ‘The Kerala Story’ should not be granted permission for screening.

“The film ‘The Kerala Story’ which falsely claims that 32,000 women in Kerala converted and became members of the Islamic State, should not be granted permission for screening. The trailer clearly shows what the film intends to say”, Satheesan said in a Facebook post.

After controversy sparked over the same, the makers of the film took a U-Turn and changed the number from 32000 women to 3 women in the description of their trailer.

He also alleged that the film is part of an attempt to implement Sangh Parivar’s agenda and create a social divide by casting a shadow of doubt over the minority groups.

“This is not an issue of freedom of expression but part of an attempt to implement the Sangh Parivar agenda to create a divide in the society by casting a shadow of doubt over the minority groups”, he said.

Mumbai: After the success of Shah Rukh Khan starrer Pathaan, Yash Raj Films is busy constructing its own spy verse. The production house is hitting headlines for its new projects and it has brought Salman and Shah Rukh together in cameo roles in each other’s movies. The production house now wants to create a spy universe with characters from films like Pathaan, WAR and Tiger. A report recently claimed that YRF is planning a movie in which Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif will be playing lead roles.

Yes, you read it right. The Twitter handle of Lets Cinema claimed that YRF is developing a high-budget female-centric spy film in which Deepika and Katrina will play lead roles. Deepika was seen in Pathaan and Katrina will be seen in Tiger 3 and both films are of YRF.

Quoting YRF’s official, an exclusive report in LetsCinema read, “We have movies in the West where Hollywood actresses lead a spy universe but it will be a first in India. Of course, we have had smaller films but this would be the first time that a big studio would mount something on a huge scale.”

    MS Education Academy

YRF is already planning to bring Salman and SRK together in lead roles in a film titled ‘Tiger Vs Pathaan and it is expected to hit screens in 2024 or 2025. The production house’s war2 which stars Hrithik Roshan aka Kabir back again as Fighter in the Siddharth Anand film will release in first quarter of 2024. Before War2, Salman Khan starrer Tiger 3 will hit the screens.

As the production house is planning to make its own spy universe, netizens reacted to the news poster shared by LetsCinema on Twitter. Some of the users are of the opinion that Ranbir Kapoor should play the role of the villain in the movie while others commented that Alia should play a cameo and the movie should be named ‘Women of Ranbir’.

Actually, Ranbir Kapoor was in love with Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif before marrying his soulmate Alia Bhatt. Netizens are relating Ranbir Kapoor’s personal life with the next movie of the YRF universe.

  • Anointing screen to be used in King Charles coronation revealed

Anointing screen to be used in King Charles coronation revealed

    [ad_1]

The king and the queen consort will be anointed behind a specially created screen of fine embroidery, held by poles hewn from an ancient windblown Windsor oak and mounted with eagles cast in bronze and gilded in gold leaf, Buckingham Palace has announced.

The anointing screen has been blessed at a special service at the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace, and will be used at what historically has been viewed as the most sacred moment of the coronation.

The anointing is traditionally regarded as a moment between the sovereign and God, and the screen is to be used to give sanctity to this moment. Traditionally, the moment is not photographed or televised.

At Elizabeth II’s coronation, an opulent canopy of rich gold fabric was held aloft over the monarch’s head.

Charles’s screen will allow greater privacy as the archbishop of Canterbury pours the chrism, or holy oil, which has been specially blessed in Jerusalem, from a golden ampulla into the 12th-century coronation spoon. The archbishop will then anoint the king by making a cross on the hands, breast and head, and perform the same on Camilla.

The tradition of anointing dates back to the Old Testament, which describes the anointing of Solomon by Zadok the Priest and Nathan the Prophet, and was one of the medieval holy sacraments emphasising the spiritual status of the sovereign.

The anointing screen, including its four oak wooden poles, is 2.6 metres tall and 2.2 metres wide. The wooden framework, designed and created by Nick Gutfreund of the Worshipful Company of Carpenters, is made from a windblown tree from the Windsor estate originally planted in 1765. The poles have been limed and waxed, and at the top of each are mounted two eagles cast in bronze and gilded in gold leaf.

The form of an eagle has longstanding associations with coronations. Eagles have appeared on previous coronation canopies, including that used by Elizabeth II in 1953. The ampulla used for anointing is eagle-shaped.

Embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework and by Digitek Embroidery, and donated by the City of London Corporation and participating livery companies, the screen is three-sided, with the open side to face the high altar in Westminster Abbey.

Designed by the iconographer Aidan Hart, the central design takes the form of a tree, which includes the names of the 56 Commonwealth nations, with the king’s cypher at the base, and is inspired by the stained-glass sanctuary window in the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace, designed for the late queen’s golden jubilee.

Two sides feature a simple cross in maroon gold, blue and red, inspired by the colours and patterning of the Cosmati pavement at Westminster Abbey where the anointing will take place. The cloth is made of wool from Australia and New Zealand, woven and finished in UK mills.

Hart said: “The inspiration of the Chapel Royal stained-glass window was personally requested by his majesty the king. Each and every element of the design has been specifically chosen to symbolise aspects of this historic coronation and the Commonwealth, from the birds that symbolise the joy and interaction among members of a community living in harmony, to the rejoicing angels and the dove that represents the Holy Spirit.”

The screen will be held by service personnel from regiments of the Household Division, replacing the knights that usually held the canopy. In bygone days, being selected to bear the canopy was seen as a sign of being in royal favour.

At Charles II’s coronation in 1661, there was an unseemly squabble between the barons of the Cinque Ports, charged with holding the silk canopy above the king’s head, and the king’s footmen. One of the job’s perks, according to the barons, was that they got to chop up the banner and each keep a piece. But they were challenged by the footmen, who also wanted the canopy, and a fight broke out, which the barons won.

On Friday, the Stone of Destiny, the ancient symbol of Scotland’s monarchy, left Edinburgh Castle for the first time since its return to Scotland in 1996 to embark on its journey to Westminster Abbey.

The 125kg stone was piped out during a ceremonial send-off, and will be placed beneath the coronation chair, which was specially built in the 14th century with the stone underneath. Getting it back in will be a challenge.

“It’s extremely tight. In fact it will not go in straight. It’s got bare millimetres to spare,” said Colin Muir, a senior stone conservator at Historic Environment Scotland, who has the task of helping to ensure it is installed.

Also known as the Stone of Scone, it was used for centuries in the coronations of monarchs and the inauguration of Scottish kings, but in 1296 after his invasion into Scotland during the wars of independence, England’s King Edward I removed the stone from Scotland. In about 1300 he had a chair built to hold the stone and installed it at Westminster Abbey.

For 700 years the stone was housed in the abbey, although in 1950 it was taken in a daring raid by four Scottish students, only to be found eventually at Arbroath Abbey.

It was officially returned to Scotland in 1996 and usually sits next to the crown jewels of Scotland in Edinburgh Castle’s Crown Room.

  • Bans, bigots and surreal sci-fi love triangles: Harry Belafonte’s staggering screen career

Bans, bigots and surreal sci-fi love triangles: Harry Belafonte’s staggering screen career

    [ad_1]

In the middle of the 20th century, Harry Belafonte was at the dizzying high point of his stunning multi-hyphenate celebrity: this handsome, athletic, Caribbean-American star with a gorgeous calypso singing voice was at the top of his game in music, movies and politics. He was the million-selling artist whose easy and sensuous musical stylings and lighter-skinned image made him acceptable to white audiences. But this didn’t stop him having a fierce screen presence and an even fiercer commitment to civil rights. He was the friend and comrade of Paul Robeson and Martin Luther King Jr – and his crossover success, incidentally, never stopped him being subject to the ugliest kind of bigotry from racists who saw his fame as a kind of infiltration. His legendary Banana Boat Song with its keening and much-spoofed call-and-response chorus “Day – O!” is actually about the brutal night shift loading bananas on to ships, part of an exploitative trade with its roots in empire.

His friend and rival Sidney Poitier (there is room for debate in exactly how friendly their rivalry really was) may have outpaced him in the contest to become Hollywood’s first black American star, being perhaps able to project gravitas more naturally and reassuringly. But Belafonte, for all his emollient proto-pop performances on vinyl, was arguably more naturally passionate. Crucially, his great movie breakthrough was with an all-black cast (though with the white director Otto Preminger) in Carmen Jones. In this 1954 film, Belafonte built on the screen chemistry he had had with the sensational star Dorothy Dandridge in their previous film together, Bright Road (a high school movie with Belafonte as the school’s headteacher, anticipating Poitier’s Blackboard Jungle and To Sir, With Love).

Three years later, in Robert Rossen’s Island in the Sun – adapted from the novel by Alec Waugh, brother of Evelyn – Belafonte sang the catchy, dreamy title song but had a spikier dramatic role as the up-and-coming trade unionist in the fictional West Indian island, confronting the white colonial ruling class. Again, Belafonte was cast with the much-loved Dandridge but his implied dangerous liaison is with a white woman, played by Joan Fontaine, connected with the family that runs the plantation. This was the sexual suggestion that had the film pulled from most movie theatres in the US south.

Screen chemistry … Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte in Carmen Jones.
Screen chemistry … Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte in Carmen Jones. Photograph: 20th Century Fox/Kobal/Shutterstock

Coming at the end of the 1950s, Robert Wise’s Odds Against Tomorrow was that rarest of things: a noir starring a black man. Belafonte was Ingram, the club singer with crippling debts who is inveigled into helping rob a bank, alongside a hardbitten professional criminal and racist, the role taken by veteran player Robert Ryan. It was a pairing to savour, Belafonte participating in the white/black crime duo that Hollywood often found expedient when it came to accommodating a black character in a contemporary US context. Belafonte’s casting as a singer in the story has a potency and style.

But perhaps Belafonte’s strangest but most distinctive role came in the 1959 post-apocalyptic sci-fi fantasy The World, The Flesh and The Devil in which he is Burton, the mining engineer trapped miles below the surface of the earth after a calamitous cave-in. But he has escaped the effects of an atomic catastrophe and when he finally scrambles to the surface, Burton finds that he is apparently the only human left alive – except for one white woman and one white man, with whom he finally has a surreal but gripping contest for the woman’s affections.

And so Belafonte finds himself in a rather daring political what-if movie: an apocalypse is the only way to make acceptable the idea of interracial love, and yet even here racism and white male paranoia rears its head. Making this the scenario for sexual rivalry is somehow inspired although the resolution is a little tame. In some ways, the futurist movie anticipated his role opposite John Travolta in the race-reverse fantasy White Man’s Burden from Japanese film-maker Desmond Nakano, in which Belafonte is the plutocrat with a privileged position in an anti-white world and Travolta is the white factory worker who gets in trouble through accidentally seeing the boss’s wife in a state of undress – a bizarre but shrewd satirical touch.

Race-reverse fantasy … with John Travolta in White Man’s Burden.
Race-reverse fantasy … with John Travolta in White Man’s Burden. Photograph: Archive Photos/Getty Images

Yet for all this, Belafonte arguably found true freedom as a black artist in the movies when it came to having a black director – and this came with Poitier himself who directed himself and Belafonte in the neglected (and now rediscovered) 1972 classic Buck and the Preacher, the pair giving great performances to match Butch and Sundance. Belafonte’s was probably the performance of his career as the itinerant opportunist chancer and thief, nicknamed The Preacher, who makes common cause with Poitier’s more upstanding frontiersman to defeat a murderous white posse.

This film, and the subsequent action comedy Uptown Saturday Night, again directed by Poitier with Belafonte as the scrappy hoodlum and gangster, gave Belafonte his stake in the blaxploitation revolution and showed what a tough, black comic player he could be. His capacity for menace was exploited by Robert Altman in his 90s jazz age confection Kansas City in which he was excellent as the mobster and gambling kingpin who is about to execute an underling (played by Dermot Mulroney) for betraying him and for having the bad taste to wear blackface as a disguise.

All this, and later cameos such as his appearance in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman add up to an amazing movie career, though perhaps one in which he never quite achieved a single breakout starring role to match his music profile or his importance as a political campaigner. But he amassed a living legend status: the fighter, the tough guy and the romantic hero.
