Will restore scrapped 4% quota for Muslims in Karnataka: Congress

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Flaying the BJP-led Karnataka government for its decision to scrap the reservation for Muslims under Category 2B in the OBC list, the Congress declared on Sunday that it would restore the quota to the minority community in the event of the party coming to power in the State, where Assembly elections are due by May.

The Cabinet meeting on Friday also decided to split this quantum (four per cent) equally between Vokkaliga and Veerashaiva-Lingayats at two per each in jobs and admissions in educational institutions, which was welcomed by the two politically influential communities.

The government moved Muslims into the 10 per cent Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) pool. President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) D K Shivakumar termed the step “unconstitutional”.

“They (the government) think that reservation can be distributed like a property. It’s not a property. It’s a right (of minorities)”, he told reporters here. “We don’t want their four per cent to be scrapped and given to any of the major communities. They (members of the minority community) are our brothers and family members”.

“Entire Vokkaligas and Veerashaiva-Lingayats are rejecting this offer,” Shivakumar claimed.

Exuding confidence that the Congress party will come to power in the “next 45 days”, he said: “we will scrap all this” and added that there is no basis to remove Muslims from the OBC list.

Charging the Bommai government with trying to rake up “emotional issues” as it’s set to lose the polls, Shivakumar said as party president, he wants to declare that the first meeting of the Cabinet, in the event of Congress coming to power, would take a decision to restore the quota.

  • SDH Uri Left With Only 3 Ambulances, All 4 in Medical Block, As 7 Ambulances Scrapped Last Month

    [ad_1]

    Zaffer Iqbal

Uri, Mar 14 (GNS): Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district is left with only three ambulances, even as the whole medical block total four vehicles, after seven ambulances were scrapped by the authorities last month.

A health official at SDH Uri told GNS that they are facing huge difficulties in managing the things, particularly with regard to referral of patients as there is an acute dearth of ambulances in the medical block. “There are only three ambulances available at SDH Uri and one ambulance at NTPHC Kamalkote Uri”, he said adding all in all there is a total of four ambulances available in the whole Medical block – Uri.

He said the ambulances of PHC Mohura, NTPHC Garkote, NTPHC Nambla and NTPHC Isham and 3 of SDH Uri were condemned last month and all these ambulances were sent back to the department.

He further said Medical Block Uri consists of almost 40 health centers and these centres are located in far off villages of Uri. “In emergency cases when an ambulance goes from SDH Uri to bring patients from different health centers or villages and if a patient needs to be shifted for further treatment, he is shifted from Uri but the patients too are suffering due to shortage of ambulances”, he said.

He said that even as Block Medical Officer (BMO) has intimated the issue to higher ups, there is nothing being done regarding the matter as of now.

Meanwhile a delegation of locals told GNS that Uri town is one of the far-off hamlets of Kashmir and Sub-division Uri which spans over 100 plus villages and majority of the population are living in tough terrain due to hilly area with nearly 40 villages of the Uri located on Line of Control.

They said if the government has introduced many schemes regarding better medical facilities, then why is a remote area(s) like Uri being neglected. “We frequently witness road accidents and wild animal attacks, so in such a scenario availability of prompt ambulance services becomes altogether important”, they said.

Meanwhile the higher-ups did not respond to any calls despite repeated attempts made by GNS. (GNS)

The vehicles owned by the state and central government, including buses owned by public transport corporations and public sector undertakings, are to be deregistered and scrapped starting the 1st of April.

This, however, does not apply to special-purpose vehicles like armoured vehicles used for operational purposes of defence and maintenance of law and order in the country.

“Disposal of such vehicles shall, after the expiry of the fifteen years from the date of initial registration of the vehicle, (should) be ensured through the Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility set up in accordance with the Motor Vehicles (Registration and Functions of Vehicle Scrapping Facility) Rules, 2021,” it said.

Announced in the Union Budget 2021-22, the policy provides for fitness tests after 20 years for personal vehicles, while commercial vehicles will require it after 15 years.

Under the new policy which is effective from 1 April 2022, the Centre has said states and Union Territories will provide up to 25 per cent tax rebate on road tax for vehicles that are purchased after scrapping old vehicles.

Last year, Union minister Nitin Gadkari had said his aim is to develop at least one automobile scrapping facility within 150 kilometres from each city centre, while asserting that the country has the potential to become a vehicle scrapping hub of the entire South Asian region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the National Vehicle Scrappage Policy in 2021 and had said it will help phase out unfit and polluting vehicles and also promote a circular economy.
