New Delhi: Domestic air traffic touched an “all-time high” of 4,56,082 passengers in a single day on Sunday, with Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia saying that the skyrocketing passenger number is a sign of the country’s rising prosperity.

The country’s domestic air traffic has been on the recovery path for the past many months after being severely hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

“Indian Domestic Air Travel Hits New High, surpasses pre-Covid Average”, on April 30, the civil aviation ministry said in a tweet on Monday.

A total of 4,56,082 passengers flew on 2,978 flights on Sunday, as per the ministry. India’s domestic air traffic reaches new heights with an all-time high!” it said.

Prior to Covid, the average daily domestic passenger number was 3,98,579. In a tweet, Scindia said that the country’s civil aviation sector is setting new records every day.

Post Covid, skyrocketing domestic air passenger number is a sign of the country’s rising growth and prosperity, he added.

In March, domestic carriers flew 128.93 lakh passengers, an increase of 21.4 per cent compared to the year-ago period.

During the January-March period, the airlines carried 375.04 lakh passengers, according to the latest data from the aviation regulator DGCA.

  • No one thought Scindia, Azad would speak such low level language against Rahul: Gehlot

No one thought Scindia, Azad would speak such low level language against Rahul: Gehlot

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Hitting back at Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and former Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad for targeting Rahul Gandhi, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday said no one had thought that the duo would start speaking such a low level language against the Gandhi scion.

He said the BJP leaders are tired because Gandhi has not shied away from raising the voice of people despite so many attacks.

“That is why, a task has been given to these leaders who left the Congress. The ideology they had sworn to fight throughout their lives, today they have stood with the same fascist ideology at the behest of BJP leaders,” Gehlot said.

Launching a sharp attack on Gandhi and the Congress, Scindia alleged the party has been left with no ideology, except the one of a “traitor who works against the country”.

He attacked the Congress for giving Gandhi a “special treatment” following his conviction in a defamation case. He accused the party of pressuring the judiciary and doing everything possible to stay relevant.

Scindia, who was once considered close to Gandhi, left the Congress following differences with the leadership and joined the BJP in 2020.

Similarly, Azad, who quit the Congress last year, said Gandhi was the primary reason why he and many others were not in the Congress today and claimed that one had to be “spineless” to remain in the grand old party.

  • Give Maha two more airports, Aditya Thackeray urges Scindia

Give Maha two more airports, Aditya Thackeray urges Scindia

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT)’s ex-Minister Aditya Thackeray on Wednesday urged Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia to sanction two new airports in Palghar and Fardapur (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), and sought clarity on the status of the proposed airports in Pune and Nashik.

He said that the development of these airports would boost progress and enhance passenger connectivity, industry, agriculture and tourism in these regions.

Thackeray Jr. referred to the Union Budget 2023-2024 and welcomed the plans for 50 airports/helipads/ports to be developed/upgraded in the country, but since details were lacking leading to confusion, he asked Scindia to accord priority for civil aviation development in Maharashtra.

He pointed out that during his tenure as a Maharashtra Minister, his focus was to push several key projects including a third airport for Mumbai at Palghar and the development of the Fardapur airfield.

While the Navi Mumbai Airport will be ready soon, Mumbai will require a third airport in the next 10 years, and the former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had asked the Maharashtra Airport Development Company to start working on the Palghar airport.

This, he claimed in the 2-pager, would provide many benefits, including a revenue generator if it turned out to be a passenger airport, cargo hub and offer parking facilities for aircraft.

On the Fardapur project which the Thackeray government was exploring, Thackeray Jr. said that thousands of tourist flock to view the marvels of Ajanta-Ellora caves in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), but the nearest airport there is 160 kms away, making the trip arduous.

Thackeray Jr. also urged Scindia to resolve the issues pertaining to the Nashik and Pune airport – the latter’s expansion plans or a new airport has been a long-debated demand that can afford the state’s cultural capital a global connectivity.

Referring to Nashik, he said it is a matter of great pain as it is one of the holiest cities with a rich heritage like Pune and needs to be tapped with an airport of global standards.

“I have only mentioned a few of Maharashtra’s multiple points of potential and roadblocks in the sector of civil aviation, directly linking it to industry, agriculture, tourism growth… I hope you will take cognisance of my humble request and give justice to Maharashtra’s civil aviation needs,” Thackeray Jr concluded.

MP: BJP man injured while trying to catch ball hit by Scindia at newly-built stadium

Rewa: A local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functionary suffered injuries to the head on Wednesday while trying to catch a ball hit by Union civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia during a casual game in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district.

He was taken to hospital and his condition was said to be stable.

The incident took place at the newly-constructed Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association stadium at Itaura, said Dheeraj Dwivedi, another local BJP functionary.

The game was being played after the stadium was inaugurated earlier in the day, he said.

Vikas Mishra tried to catch a ball hit by the minister. But he missed the catch and the ball hit him in the forehead.

The game was stopped, and he was rushed to the Sanjay Gandhi Medical College Hospital. Scindia, along with former minister Rajendra Shukla and Rewa MP Janardhan Mishra, visited him in the hospital later.

“His condition is stable,” said Dwivedi.

  • Number of airports in country to go up to over 200: Scindia

Number of airports in country to go up to over 200: Scindia

    [ad_1]

Chennai: The Civil Aviation Ministry has drawn up plans to boost air connectivity by taking the total number of airports operating in the country to over 200 over the next five-six years under its vision of increasing the ‘width and depth of air penetration,’ Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said here on Saturday.

Scindia, here on a brief visit, said in its 67 years of independence the country saw only 74 new airports being built while in the last 8.5 years, it has increased to 147 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rule.

“We are just one short of doubling that number. The 148th airport will be also completed this month itself which means that what India took 66-67 years to build and under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that has been done in a period of nine years,” he told reporters.

Scindia said the Ministry has envisaged taking the number of airports operating in the country to over 200 in the next five to six years.

“Another 50 additional airports, wardrobes, and heliports have been sanctioned in the budget (presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman). Under the UDAAN scheme, we were building 100 airports and now we will build 150 airports, waterdromes and heliports in the next couple of years to come,” he said.

Stressing that the air connectivity in the country cannot be focused only on expanding international routes, he said air connectivity should be expanded to tier-II and III cities.

“Under the Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) scheme we introduced a small aircraft scheme last year which will be only sub-20 seater aircraft. These are all not ATRs, not Boeing or Airbus, and not big aircraft. These are sub-20 seater aircraft so that the penetration is down to the grassroots level,” he said.

Scindia said such aircraft were currently being operated in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and NorthEastern States and advanced landing grounds have been activated on the border of Arunachal Pradesh so that there is 100 percent penetration.

“The ‘mantra’ of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is that air penetration must encompass the length and breadth of the country,” he said.

To a query about the greenfield airport at Parandur near Chennai, he said the Ministry was in discussion with TIDCO (Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Ltd) and was examining the project proposal. It would issue the ‘site’ and ‘in-principle’ approval through the Airport Authority of India and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

“DGCA, AAI has to look into the proposal for a new airport to see if there are any obstacles on the flight path from a safety and security angle. Your question should be directed to the State government,” he said while responding to a query about the protest by villagers in Parandur opposing the project.

In August 2022, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin said a second airport for the city would come up at Parandur near Sriperumbudur at an estimated Rs 20,000 crore with an annual capacity of 10 crore passengers.
