TN: Stalin moves resolution to bring Dalit Christians under Scheduled Castes

    [ad_1]

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin introduced a motion in the Assembly on Wednesday seeking to include Dalit Christians into the purview of the Scheduled Castes (SC) quota, stating that doing so will allow them to benefit from social justice in all aspects.

“This august House urges the Government of India to make necessary amendments to the Constitution to extend statutory protection, rights and concessions including reservation as provided to the people belonging to Scheduled Castes under the Indian Constitution, also to the Scheduled Castes who have converted to Christianity, so as to enable them to avail the benefits of social justice in all aspects,” the resolution moved by Stalin read, reported Deccan Herald.

The resolution comes at a time when the Union Government is opposed to granting quota privileges to Dalits who have converted to Christianity or Islam.

In December 2022, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that it was unwilling to execute the recommendations of the Justice Ranganath Misra Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities that Dalits who converted to Christianity and Islam be granted quota.

The Centre has also formed a commission to investigate the subject, led by former Chief Justice of India Justice K G Balakrishnan. While Dalits who are Buddhists or Sikhs are eligible for SC reservation advantages, those who converted to Christianity or Islam are not.

  • Karnataka HC disallows bus transport strike scheduled to start tomorrow

Karnataka HC disallows bus transport strike scheduled to start tomorrow

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has put temporary brakes on the proposed transport strike called by a state transport corporation employees union known as the ‘Sarige Nigamagala Noukarara Samana Manskara Vedike’.

The strike in demand of wage revision, allowances and reinstatement of employees was to commence on March 24.

A Division Bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice Prasanna B Varale and Justice Ashok S Kinagi, which heard a public interest litigation (PIL) against the strike call on Thursday, opined that since there are public exams going on for students across Karnataka, any strike would put their future in jeopardy. Therefore, any strike should not be allowed during this period.

Directing that no strike should be undertaken till the next date of hearing, the court adjourned the case by three weeks. Notices were ordered to be issued to the transport union in the PIL.

The indefinite strike was earlier announced by the union which represents employees from the BMTC, KSRTC, NWKRTC and KKRTC.

The PIL against the strike said it would cause unwanted suffering to the public, especially students and those in need of medical help. Since various exams are being conducted at this point of time, students will be put to trouble jeopardising their education.

The government counsel apprised the court that the state is holding meetings with the transport employees and another round is scheduled with the representatives on April 6 at 11.30 am. The court then directed that no strike should be held for the next three weeks and adjourned the hearing.

Official Notification of Exam Postponement by JKSSB

The decision to postpone the exams came after widespread protests and criticism from the aspirants who had been demanding the scrapping of the exam conducting agency Aptech Pvt. Ltd. The aspirants had been alleging irregularities in the recruitment process and had been demanding that the exams be conducted by a more credible agency. They had also raised concerns about the technical glitches that had marred the online exam conducted by Aptech Pvt. Ltd. in the past.

The notice issued by the JKSSB stated that the exams were being postponed until further intimation. The notice did not give any reasons for the postponement of the exams. However, it is widely believed that the decision to postpone the exams was taken in view of the protests and demands of the aspirants.

The JKSSB has been under fire from various quarters for the irregularities in the recruitment process. The board has been accused of nepotism, favoritism, and corruption in the recruitment process. The aspirants have alleged that the exams conducted by the board are not fair and transparent, and that there are many irregularities in the selection process.

The decision to hire Aptech Pvt. Ltd. as the exam conducting agency has also been criticized by the aspirants. They have alleged that the company does not have the requisite experience and expertise to conduct the exams. They have also raised concerns about the technical glitches that have marred the online exam conducted by the company in the past.

The postponement of the exams is likely to cause inconvenience to the aspirants who had been preparing for the exams for a long time. It is also likely to cause delays in the recruitment process, which may have a cascading effect on the overall functioning of the government departments.
