Go Airlines: Legal scene now shifts to US court after unproductive Pratt & Whitney meet

    [ad_1]

Chennai: After getting what it had prayed for before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), the legal scene now shifts to a US court where Go Airlines (India) Ltd has filed a suit against the aircraft engine maker Pratt & Whitney.

The Wadia group’s low cost airline has taken Pratt & Whitney to the court in the US to make it honour the award given by an emergency arbitrator appointed in accordance with the 2016 Arbitration Rules of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC).

Speaking to IANS, Go Airlines CEO Kaushik Khona said the US court’s decision is expected to happen soon.

    MS Education Academy

According to the airline, it was forced to apply to the NCLT after Pratt & Whitney, the exclusive engine supplier for its Airbus A320neo aircraft fleet, refused to comply with an award issued by an emergency arbitrator appointed in accordance with the 2016 Arbitration Rules of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC).

“That order directed Pratt & Whitney to take all the reasonable steps to release and dispatch without delay to Go First at least 10 serviceable spare leased engines by April 27, 2023 and a further 10 spare leased engines per month until December 2023, with the objective of Go First returning to full operations and achieving its financial rehabilitation and survival,” the airline added.

Go Airlines said that even if Pratt & Whitney complied with the arbitration award, it would be able to resume full operations by August/September 2023.

Khona said even meeting the top brass of Pratt & Whitney when they visited India in January 2023 did not result in any positive response.

The top brass of Pratt & Whitney led by Shane Eddy, President, had been to Bengaluru in January 2023 to officially open the doors of the company’s India Engineering Centre (IEC).

“On January 19, 2023, Varun Berry (Managing Director and Vice Chairman of the Wadia group’s Britannia Industries Ltd) and I had gone to Bengaluru to meet Eddy and Mr.Hendrik Deurloo, President, (Commercial Engines) to again asking to provide much awaited and promised repaired engines and spare engines and induct failed engines into MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul),” Khona told IANS.

According to Go Airlines, the engine maker had promised through a signed Side letter in 2012 that if an engine failed within its initial 6,000 hours (or 4,200 take-off and landing cycles) of normal operation, it would repair and recondition that engine at no charge.

The airline said Pratt & Whitney engine problems have been an industry-wide issue. The teething problems continue even after so many years clearly indicating an inherent design problem.

“These GTF engines were developed on an unproven, new’ technology platform prematurely tested and forced into the market to capture airline attention with performance stats that were never achieved,” Go Airlines charged.

“Between 2016 and February 2023 GoFirst (brand of Go Airlines) carried out 510 GTF Engine removals: 289 Engine Changes as a result of at least 28 different defects, and 221 Engine Swaps. It also shows that the most prevalent technical issue, by some order of magnitude, has been combustor distress, with 140 GTF Engines removed for this issue alone.”

The airlines said 15 per cent of total Pratt & Whitney GTF powered aircrafts are grounded because of faulty engines globally (178 aircrafts are grounded out of 1,219 aircraft as of March this year.

And the most affected region is India with 65 grounded aircraft out of a total 178.

“Out of a total 60 global customers, only four have grounded aircraft in excess of 25 per cent and two of them are Indian. Pratt & Whitney’s recent proposal whereby they proposed to give 5 per cent of induction slots to Go First despite AOG’s (aircraft on ground) at 54 per cent is hard to believe and is a deliberate attempt to kill Go First,” Go Airlines said.

According to Khona, if Indian passengers are suffering high airfare now then it is due to Pratt & Whitney.

“They (Pratt & Whitney) take India for granted,” said Khona.

Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is set to enter the Tiger franchise through an adrenaline pumping action sequence that will be shot for seven days in Mumbai end April.

What’s to note is that this sequence has been planned by Aditya Chopra and ‘Tiger 3’ director Maneesh Sharma for over six months so that it can become a talking point for the nation.

“When SRK & Salman’s sequence was planned for ‘Pathaan’, the makers realised that such cross-overs of super-spies will need to go a notch higher every single time it happens because that’s the biggest USP for audiences.”

“So, the writers, Adi and Maneesh went into a huddle and took six months to write and visualise Pathaan’s entry in Tiger’s timeline! Every detail of this shoot has been planned keeping in mind that it needs to deliver full on paisa vasool entertainement that is also a spectacle for audiences,” informs a senior trade source.

‘Tiger 3’ starring Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif as Zoya & Emraan Hashmi as Tiger’s nemesis is set to release this Diwali.

  • Buttigieg to visit scene of Ohio crash Thursday

Buttigieg to visit scene of Ohio crash Thursday

    [ad_1]

    220222 pete buttigieg ap 773

While in the eastern Ohio community of about 5,000 people, Buttigieg will receive an update from the National Transportation Safety Board — the lead agency investigating the crash — on its probe, which could take as long as 18 months to complete. He is also expected to meet with DOT officials who arrived on the ground within hours of the derailment.

Buttigieg’s visit comes as Republicans such as Florida Sens. Rick Scott and Marco Rubio have sharply criticized his handling of the issue, including his slowness to visit the scene of the derailment.

It is exceedingly rare for a transportation secretary to visit the site of a train derailment, especially one that resulted in no fatalities — even though this crash has resulted in unusually heavy national media attention, partly driven by the televised image of the accident’s toxic black plume and residents’ anger over the safety of their air and water. About 1,000 train derailments occur each year, according to federal data.

“The secretary is going now that the EPA has said it is moving out of the emergency response phase and transitioning to the long-term remediation phase,” the person familiar with Buttigieg’s thinking told POLITICO.

The trip comes the day after former President Donald Trump was expected to meet with locals Wednesday and deliver cleaning supplies and pallets of bottled water.

“The Department of Transportation will continue to do its part by helping get to the bottom of what caused the derailment and implementing rail safety measures, and we hope this sudden bipartisan support for rail safety will result in meaningful changes in Congress,” DOT said in a statement Wednesday.

  • Nikki Yadav murder case: Accused taken to crime scene at Kashmiri Gate

Nikki Yadav murder case: Accused taken to crime scene at Kashmiri Gate

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The police team probing the Nikki Yadav murder case took the accused Sahil Gehlot to the crime scene in Kashmiri Gate where he had allegedly killed her, police sources on Thursday.

Sources said that the murder was allegedly committed near the Kashmiri Gate area and Gehlot then drove with the body all the way to his dhaba near village Mitraon – a distance of around 45 km – where he stuffed it in a refrigerator and proceeded coolly with his wedding on February 10

Meanwhile, police teams are also scanning CCTV around the place and on the route to verify all this.

“The complete sequence is being examined so that the exact place and time of Nikki’s murder can be known. Police have also summoned Ashish, Gehlot’s brother, in whose car he strangled Nikki with a data cable, for questioning,” said the sources.

Sources also said that the police team will also take Gehlot to Nizamuddin and Anand Vihar railway stations, where he had taken Yadav in the car the day he killed her.

According to the official, on February 9 night, the accused Gehlot, a resident of Mitraon village, went to meet the woman at her Uttam Nagar residence where she lived with her younger sister.

“Gehlot stayed there for two-three hours and later both of them went to Nizammudin railway station. But as they could not get tickets to Goa, they changed their plan to go to Himachal Pradesh and reached ISBT, Kashmere Gate,” said the official.

“When the duo reached ISBT, an argument broke out between them. In between the fight, Gehlot kept receiving back-to-back calls from his family, which he says triggered him to his threshold point and he turned violent,” said a source.

He then strangled Nikki with his mobile phone data cable inside the car, probably around 8 a.m on February 10, drove to his dhaba to hide her body, and then, proceeded with his wedding on February 10.

Net gain: Uganda’s small but lively tennis scene – a photo essay

    [ad_1]

My sport is not a well-known one in Uganda. Tennis requires equipment and a well-maintained court with a flat surface – all expensive things. It is a foreign game, brought here by the British colonialists, and the exclusive courts were constructed and used by only the wealthiest in society.

There were courts at Makerere University and at the Kampala Club. One was also built beside the cricket oval at Lugogo, and it’s still there. But the sport remained largely the elite preserve of foreigners, at first the whites and later, increasingly, Asians.

Coach David Tyaba marks a court in preparation for members to play at Makerere University Guest House Tennis Club.

    • Court maintenance, supply of balls and restringing of rackets must all be done before play can begin. Here, David Oringa serves in a match at Lugogo tennis complex in Kampala, and Charles Wanyama umpires a national championship clash between Simon Ayera, left, and Godfrey Ocen

After independence in 1962, the cream of the newly minted political class found a fondness for tennis, which remained a rich person’s sport throughout the 70s and 80s. Many of the courts were sold off and the land developed.

Now a small but lively tennis scene has emerged in Kampala, Uganda’s capital, as equipment becomes more widely available, more durable and less costly. Tennis is no longer restricted to the elites although it remains a distinctly middle-class sport. Public courts are few and far between, and there’s little public or media attention.

Students of Makerere University tennis team during a training session as over seen by Coach Charles Senyange at the Makerere main grounds courts.

A new community of tennis enthusiasts is now working to change this, running sports camps for children during school holidays and encouraging their participation as much as possible. By trading secondhand equipment and maintaining the courts as best they can using locally made equipment, a small group of dedicated players is hoping to ignite a passion for tennis in Kampala.

Most courts in Uganda are made of clay, mainly because they are cheaper than hard courts to construct. But clay courts require brushing, watering, pressing and marking on a daily basis. Sometimes materials for this are improvised – lime or ash is used to draw the lines, a string helps demarcate the lines and a stone holds down the string.

Tennis balls are among the most expensive pieces of equipment; a tin of three costs 40,000 Ugandan shillings (£9). Academies struggle to source enough tennis balls for the rising number of players, and usually make do with donations from well-wishers and used balls from professional players.

She’s one of the children that trek a long journey to attend training all the way from Kirolo, a village in Matuga 32 km from Kampala. Her passion for the sport and support from her parents helped her attend the three days of the Tennis Camp and regular Saturday training sessions held by the Tenna Academy.

John Oduke, 64 is one of few Ugandans lucky enough to learn the sport at an early age in the 1960s. He began as a ball boy and rose, without the benefit of a coach, to be one of the top players in the country, representing Uganda in the 1998 Davis Cup. He is now the national coach of the Ugandan tennis team.

Among those hoping to emulate him is eight-year-old Florence Nabulime, daughter of tennis coach Charles Ssenyange. She says: “Dad inspired me into the sport. I love tennis because it also helps me make new friends.” Patricia Nakawunde, also eight, is equally keen, and travels 32km to attend training in Kampala from her village near Matuga. Both are following in the footsteps of Winnie Birungi, 19, who won the national championships last summer.

Judith Nalukwago returns a forehand during a match at Makerere University guesthouse tennis courts

My childhood home was close to tennis courts. On my way to school, I would always watch the players with admiration. My house had previously belonged to an Asian family, and they had left behind a wooden racket which sparked my curiosity.

I first tried playing tennis in 2006 and I haven’t stopped since. I love the sport because of the attributes it promotes in players. Values such as discipline, trust and sacrifice help my mind as well as my body grow stronger.
