  • India’s Minimum Import Price For Apples Saves Kashmir’s Orchard Owners

    [ad_1]

    by Raashid Andrabi

SRINAGAR: Kashmir’s apple growers can finally take a deep breath of relief as the Indian government has implemented a Minimum Import Price (MIP) for apples, which puts an end to the influx of cheap imports from Iran and Afghanistan.

This policy mandates that any apple costing less than Rs 50 per kilogram cannot be imported, providing a much-needed boost to the local apple industry. With over 35 lakh people, both directly and indirectly, depending on the apple industry for their livelihood, the move is expected to have a significant impact on the Kashmiri economy, which currently accounts for around 8% of the country’s GDP.

The announcement of this decision was received with open arms by the Kashmiri apple growers, who have been struggling for years with declining prices due to the cheap import of apples from neighbouring countries. The drop in apple pricing caused losses for local producers, leading to many switching their apple orchards for non-agricultural purposes. The new policy is expected to ensure that the local apple industry obtains a higher market share.

According to Majid Aslam Wafai, President of JKPICCA, “We have been lobbying for this for a long time, and we hope that this measure will protect farmers whose input costs for growing apples have gone up manifold in recent years.” He further added, “We will have a stable price now during the harvest season, beforehand the Iranian apples were sold at lesser prices here which impacted us.”

The MIP is an import price ceiling that safeguards the interests of the country’s apple growers. The import policy remains “Free” for those apples costing above Rs 50 per kilogram. However, an exception has been made for India’s neighbour Bhutan, which has been kept out of the new restrictions.

This decision by the Indian government is expected to have a significant impact on the Kashmiri economy. In Jammu and Kashmir, over 3.37 lakh hectares of land is being used for the production of fresh and dry fruits, and more area is added each year. Apples are grown on 1.68 lakh hectares of land, accounting for a significant portion of the region’s horticultural industry. Pears are cultivated on 14,161 hectares of land in the Valley.

The move is expected to safeguard the interests of local apple growers and ensure that the industry obtains a higher market share. The local farmers, who have been eagerly awaiting such a decision, are now optimistic about the future of the apple industry. One such farmer, Shabir Ahmad, said, “This decision has come as a huge relief for us. We were struggling to compete with the cheap imports from Iran and Afghanistan. Now, we can expect a fair price for our produce.”

The decision to impose an MIP for apples is a welcome move, particularly for the small-scale apple growers in the region. Many of these farmers have been struggling to make ends meet due to the lack of a proper support system. The new policy is expected to provide a much-needed boost to the local apple industry, which has been facing tough competition from cheap imports from neighbouring countries.

The Kashmiri apple industry has been a significant contributor to the region’s economy for decades. The implementation of this new policy is expected to help this industry regain its position as one of the leading horticultural industries in the country. It is also expected to provide a much-needed source of income for the local farmers who depend on the industry for their livelihood.

Overall, the decision to implement an MIP for apples is a positive step towards supporting the local apple industry in Kashmir. With this new policy in place, local farmers can finally breathe a sigh of relief and hope for a better future.

“A 23-day-old baby’s life was saved by 108 ambulance staff by conducting CPR within necessary time in Koduru, Siddipet district. Your act within the emergency period is life saving,” he tweeted.

CPR treatment has gained prominence with the rise in cases of heart ailments across the country.

In wake of elevating cardiac deaths, the Telangana government would soon make Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) mandatory in industries employing above 100 people.

Health minister T Harish Rao while addressing the inaugural of the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training session at Sangareddy in March, said that an act making AED machines mandatory in gated communities, apartment communities, malls and other places will soon be implemented.

The minister held that around 15 lakh people were dying of cardiac arrest in the country and 50 percent of lives can be saved if the people get trained in CPR administration.

AED being the most important in such cases, Harish Rao said that the state government would procure 1,200 defibrillators worth Rs 15 crore to be made available in Basthi Dawakhanas, Primary Health Centres.

The minister further directed the officials to conduct training sessions for police personnel, Panchayat and SHG women in CPR, AED and mouth-to-mouth breathing techniques.

Harish Rao asserted that quick action by a person trained rightly in administering CPR would save the lives of many.

“Lifestyle change, food habits and lack of physical exercises were identified as main reasons behind the elevating cardiac death cases,” remarked Harish Rao.

The woman passenger had delivered the baby in the lavatory. The infant was not breathing but after Sona’s intervention, the infant started breathing.

Later, a railway medical team at Rourkela junction took the woman and her child to the nearest hospital.

For her efforts, Sona of Chakradharpur railway division (Jharkhand) of South-Eastern Railway (SER) has been lauded by her colleagues and seniors.

The woman identified as Laxmi Godra, 24, and her newborn baby are said to be stable.

According to official sources, Laxmi along with her husband Bahadur Godra and brother-in-law Raju was travelling from Hazur Sahib in Nanded (Maharashtra) to Tatanagar (Jharkhand) in Hazur Sahib Nanded-Santragachi SuperFast Express (12767).

Railway sources said, “Laxmi had gone to the loo when she developed labour pain and delivered the baby inside the coach lavatory. Since no passenger, including women, came to her rescue, she along with her newborn remained inside the lavatory. But as soon as the train reached Rourkela junction, her husband jumped at the railway platform and shouted for help.”

“I was heading to Tatanagar for a scheduled firing exercise along with my group, when one of my colleagues informed me that a woman had delivered a baby inside the train lavatory and there was no one to help her. I had gained some informal experience in child delivery at a private clinic where I worked as a nonmedical staff before I joined the RPF. I followed my instincts and ran to help her,” Sona told reporters.

“Without wasting time, I first detached and clipped the umbilical cord. The newborn was showing no movement and his body was turning pale. I turned him around and started rubbing his back. It took me a couple of minutes when the baby started crying after which I wrapped him in a blanket. By then the medical team arrived and took over,” she said.

  • Total robotic liver transplant surgery saves 8-month-old toddler

Total robotic liver transplant surgery saves 8-month-old toddler

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: In the first such surgery of its kind in western India, a total robotic liver transplant operation saved the life of an 8-month-old toddler from Ahmedabad at the Global Hospitals here, officials said here on Monday.

The total robotic surgical team was led by Gaurav Chaubal, which operated on the little child, Mohammed A.K. Jufna, afflicted by a rare metabolic liver disease called Crigler Najjar Syndrome.

His elder sibling had earlier died of the same condition, and this baby boy suffered from jaundice, diarrhoea, vomiting, repeated fever and was rushed for an urgent transplant to the Global Hospitals in Parel, Mumbai.

After assessment, the child’s mother volunteered to donate a part of her liver to save her little son.

Chaubal said that a complete robotic donor hepatectomy offered benefits like a very small scar below the waistline instead of the usual inverted L-shape cut in open surgeries.

“The robotic surgical system provides high precision and control, reduces blood loss, lower risks of infection, postoperative pain and abdominal wall hernias besides reduced complication rate,” said Chaubal.

Accordingly, recovery is faster and the donor-mother was discharged on the third day after the surgery, compared with at least 6 days hospital stay in the regular open surgeries.

Global Hospitals CEO Dr. Vivek Talaulikar said that this was the first robotic donor hepatectomy done end-to-end in the first attempt in western India with the Da Vinci Xi system that allows computer-guided, 3-D visualisation with impressive results.

“Our first child had already succumbed to his rare genetic disorder and my wife came forward to donate a part of her liver. We are very happy and thank the medical team for saving our second child,” said the child’s elated father, Abdul Kadar Jufna.

Kupwara, Feb 10: Timely intervention from Indian Army saved a pregnant woman in the far-flung frontier district of Kupwara. Heavy snowfall in the area made it impossible for the civil ambulance to ply on the slippery roads.

Without wasting any time, Army launched its medical and rescue team in a 2.5 Tonner as it was difficult for any light vehicle to move.
