SRK, Salman to square off in Tiger v/s Pathaan film

Mumbai: Viewers were in for a treat with the scene featuring Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan in the spy-action thriller ‘Pathaan’. Well now, the two superstars will be taking each other head on in the new film which will be an extension of the YRF spy-universe.
While SRK’s ‘Pathaan’ continues to smash box-office records, Salman will be bringing the magic of Tiger with his Diwali release ‘Tiger 3’. But, the bigger story lies with the two-hero film featuring the superstars which will put them against each other more than two decades after their last collaboration ‘Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam’.
As per a media report by Pinkvilla, the basic script of the film has been locked by YRF head-honcho Aditya Chopra, who by the way made a rare on camera appearance in the recently released streaming docu-series ‘The Romantics’.
Shridhar Raghavan, who wrote the script for ‘War’ and ‘Pathaan’ has been entrusted with the duty of the writers’ mentor of the spy-universe. The film will bring the face-off between two of the biggest forces in Bollywood much like what happened with Iron Man and Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and ‘Batman vs Superman’ from the DC Universe.

Abdu Rozik grooves to ‘Oh oh Jaane Jaana’ with Salman Khan, video goes viral

Mumbai: Tajikistani social media sensation and ‘Bigg Boss 16’ contestant Abdu Rozik on Wednesday shared a video in which he is seen grooving with actor Salman Khan.
Taking to Instagram, Abdu shared a couple of videos which he captioned, “O oh jane jana! Bhaijaan and Chota Bhaijaan.”
In the first video, Abdu and Salman could be seen grooving to the super-hit track “Oh Oh Jaane Jaana”.

I’m lucky, says Salman Rushdie on surviving colossal attack in New York

London: Salman Rushdie, the Mumbai-born author of Booker Prize-winning novel ‘Midnight’s Children’, said on Monday that he feels lucky to have survived the last year’s brutal stabbing at a literary event in the US as he spoke for the first time about the “colossal attack”.
The 75-year-old British American novelist was giving a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in New York where he is based on August 12 last year when a man stormed the stage and stabbed and punched him several times.
In his first interview since the attack which has caused loss of vision in one eye, the author told The New Yorker’ magazine that his main feeling was one of gratitude to those who showed their support and his family, including sons Zafar and Milan.
“I’m lucky. What I really want to say is that my main overwhelming feeling is gratitude,” Rushdie told the magazine.
“I’m able to get up and walk around. When I say I’m fine, I mean, there are bits of my body that need constant check ups. It was a colossal attack,” he said.
Asked if he felt it had been a mistake to let his guard down in New York, years after the fatwa by Iran’s former supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini called on Muslims to assassinate the author over the allegedly “blasphemous” novel The Satanic Verses’, he replied: “Well, I’m asking myself that question, and I don’t know the answer to it. I did have more than 20 years of life. So, is that a mistake?”
“Also, I wrote a lot of books. The Satanic Verses’ was my fifth published book my fourth published novel and this [ Victory City’] is my twenty-first. So, three-quarters of my life as a writer has happened since the fatwa. In a way, you can’t regret your life,” he added.
The celebrated author told the magazine that he was very moved by the tributes that his near-death inspired and is determined to look forward.

“It’s very nice that everybody was so moved by this, you know? I had never thought about how people would react if I was assassinated, or almost assassinated,” he said.
“I’ve tried very hard over these years to avoid recrimination and bitterness. I just think it’s not a good look. One of the ways I’ve dealt with this whole thing is to look forward and not backwards. What happens tomorrow is more important than what happened yesterday,” he added.
“She kind of took over at a point when I was helpless,” he said of his wife, poet and novelist Rachel Eliza Griffiths.
His latest novel, Victory City’, completed before the attack, traces back to a trip decades ago to Hampi, the site in Karnataka of the ruins of the medieval Vijayanagara empire.
“The first kings of Vijayanagara announced, quite seriously, that they were descended from the moon… It’s like saying, I’ve descended from the same family as Achilles.’ Or Agamemnon. And so, I thought, well, if you could say that, I can say anything,” the author said.
Rushdie’s attacker Hadi Matar is being held in the Chautauqua County Jail in the village of Mayville, charged with attempted murder in the second degree and facing a lengthy prison sentence.

‘Find it difficult to write’: Salman Rushdie speaks out after attack Salman Rushdie

London: Months after a near-lethal attack that left him debilitated and without vision in one eye, Sir Salman Rushdie says that he is “lucky” and has been told that he is “doing very well”. But he still finds it difficult to type or write.
I was “lucky … my main overwhelming feeling is gratitude. I’ve been better. But, considering what happened, I’m not so bad,” he said in an interview with journalist-author David Remnick in ‘The New Yorker’, the BBC reported.
The award-winning novelist was attacked on stage at an event in New York state last August and spent many weeks in hospital. He subsequently lost vision in one eye.
“The big injuries are healed, essentially. I have feeling in my thumb and index finger and in the bottom half of the palm. I’m doing a lot of hand therapy, and I’m told that I’m doing very well,” he said.
Rushdie said it was difficult to type and to write due to a lack of feeling in some of his fingertips. He also said that he has barely been out since the attack, other than to go for hospital appointments.
“I’m able to get up and walk around. When I say I’m fine, I mean, there are bits of my body that need constant check-ups. It was a colossal attack,” Rushdie said.
He said he also has mental scars from the attack and that he is having to rethink his approach to security. Rushdie has lived without security for more than two decades.
“There is such a thing as PTSD, you know,” he said. “I’ve found it very, very difficult to write. I sit down to write, and nothing happens. I write, but it’s a combination of blankness and junk, stuff that I write and that I delete the next day. I’m not out of that forest yet, really.”

Saudi executions doubled under rule of King Salman, Crown Prince: Report

The annual rate of executions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has almost doubled since King Salman and Crown prince, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, came to power in 2015.
This came in a report, issued on Tuesday by the non-profit European Saudi organization for Human Rights (ESOHR) and the anti-death penalty charity Reprieve.
The report, entitled “Bloodshed and Lies: Mohammed bin Salman’s Kingdom of Execution,” stated that the average number of executions increased by 82 percent under the rule of Mohammed bin Salman and his father.
The two organizations confirmed that more than 1,000 executions were carried out during the reign of the current leadership of the Kingdom, after matching official data with their own investigations and interviews with lawyers, families of death row, and activists.
In the year 2022, the Kingdom executed 147 people, including 81 people in one day in March 2022 on charges related to terrorism, in the largest mass execution in the history of Saudi Arabia, and this matter sparked international condemnation.
In November 2022, Saudi Arabia executed 12 people in 10 days.

Saudi Arabia executed in 2022 executed twice the number of individuals who were executed in 2021. 67 were executed in 2021 and 27 in 2020.
According to the report, the Kingdom carried out an average of 70.8 executions per year during the period from 2010 to 2014, and during the period from 2015 to 2022, it carried out 129.5 executions per year.

However, the past six years witnessed the largest number of executions in modern history in Saudi Arabia.
Almost three-quarters of the women executed from 2010-2021 were foreign nationals, and of these, at least 56 percent were domestic workers.
The report pointed out that “executions in Saudi Arabia have always been shrouded in secrecy.
The government refuses to publish data on executions, despite repeated warnings from the United Nations in this regard and does not notify families of executions or of returning bodies to their families.
The report considers that “this lack of transparency enables Saudi Arabia to cover up its violations and hinders the efforts of other countries and organizations to hold it accountable.”
“Every point in this report represents a human life lost,” said Maya Foa, director of Reprieve.
Maya Foa continued, “The Saudi death penalty machine reaps children, demonstrators, vulnerable women in domestic service, drug carriers without their knowledge, and people whose only ‘crime’ is owning banned books or speaking to foreign journalists.”
“The Saudi authorities are taking this bloody path with the aim of intimidation and political repression,” said Taha al-Hajji, legal director of the European Saudi Organization for Human Rights, noting that “reports of secret executions since the end of 2022 are very disturbing.”
